  2. Most dangerous road?.....My vote goes for ANY road that has a Thai driver on it.

    right!

the situation showed in the pictures of the first poster I have seen various times on my past visa runs to Cambodia in the province.

Other experiences around Ram Inthra and Kuh Bon same same. Heavily loaded lorries but also cars overspeeding day and night not to speak about the motorbikes. In the mean time using handphones or watching videos.

I even don't feel save on the pedestrians pavement after seeing a car crashing full speed into the stairs of a foot bridge at Ram Inthra.

Latest experiences Kuh Bon this week: clients parked out carefully and somebody speeded into their car where after another idiot crashed into the police car :o which could be seen clearly due to the flashing lights.

Yesterday night people crossing the road knocked down by a motorbike for no reason. Whilst waiting at the ambulance the bike driver rushed away as is also usual here.

Next time I will take the keys of the vehicle involved as I have seen before Thai locals doing this.

  3. from ABC news:

Thailand's Thaksin on holidays in Melbourne

    By Karen Percy

Thailand's exiled Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, is in Australia on a private visit.

Mr Thaksin's private jet arrived in Melbourne last night.

His Bangkok-based lawyer says Mr Thaksin will play golf and have a holiday over the next 10 days.

But the military junta in Thailand has been concerned about Mr Thaksin's regional visits, particularly after he met a senior member of the Singapore Government last month.

The meeting has prompted a diplomatic spat between Thailand and Singapore.

Mr Thaksin's lawyer says the former prime minister has no plans to meet any government officials or ministers while in Australia.

Mr Thaksin was ousted from office in a coup in September of last year.

He was in New York at the time, and has not been allowed to return to Thailand.

Thai authorities are not yet commenting on Mr Thaksin's presence in Australia.

His visit to Australia is expected to attract scrutiny from Thai authorities concerned about a possible return to politics by Mr Thaksin.

A spokesman for the Australian Government says it is not aware of Mr Thaksin's itinerary.

Was at Bali last week as Antara (Indonesian official press) published.

  4. Hi,

I need to buy a water pump for a new two story home. The water supply is in an underground tank. What is my best bet for a pump - brand, model, wattage, or whatever?

The ones I've previously bought on the recommendation of the shops barely supply enough water to turn on the hot water heater upstairs. Is this normal?

    Thanks,

    Peter

As said in an answer: Grundfoss is one of the best and can be bought locally. The choice depends of from where you want to suck (altitude or depth), the height you want to pressurize and the amount of water you need in your house. These tables you can find in the specs before you make a choice.

    Attention:

Suck with at least the same diameter of the outlet of the supply and never suck from the mains but use a storage-tank which is sufficient to meet your demands.

  5. True Move offer a two-year validity SIM. Actually this one is tempting!

    http://www.truemove.com/eng/product/package/pre_nan2pee.htm

    Must be deceptive information? :o

THANK YOU! Very useful: a True-shop (Fashion Island) was denying the existence of such a "promotion"! The staff seemed to be informed to ignore as much as possible as it is bringing few Baht. Now I hope they are so nice to give me this without forcing me to change number as I have heard several times from Thai: change of promotion means change of number. I don't know if that is 'true'.

  6. I can't say that I disagree with your point of view but this sort of scheme is not out of the ordinary. I have prepaid phone accounts in five other countries and they all work pretty much the same way as do the Thai prepaid accounts. The period of validity varies in accordance with the recharge amount, after which any unused credits become "locked". In India, this can be as little as a few days.

I remember that in Germany were the same rules of "legal" theft of prepaid cell-phone fees until somebody started a court-case and won. Since that day this rule is prohibited.

When those companies want to earn their money they should do this by means of the durance of the call you are making and not creating the most funny "offers" which are free of charge or almost during certain periods and trap one afterwards with confiscating pre-paid fees when they are not used within a certain period! Paying, in my vision, for services or for goods cannot mean, as said by the starter of this topic, that one can loose the paid amount or part of it. Anyway, the federal court in Germany shared the same opinion.

  7. I will double check on Monday but this is more a case by case situation, where you plead your case rather than getting a black and white rule that is only 400K or 40,000 Baht income. o I retired early. Not to brag or anything but I have enough assets back home to lead many many lives of luxury in Thailand with my wife and my future kid, she is preganant now. But I don't have proof of income of of 40000 bahts a month, but can show I wired in Thailand nearly 10 million in past 4 years, and also can show I have joined family assets in bonds, mutual funds, and also real estates back home that worth thousands times as required. Any advice from Thai experts?

"Re-confirmed, combinations of income and money in the bank are still allowed for applicants prior to Oct 1st."

To-day my first step to a “married visa” was granted with a 3-months non visa after showing the required paperwork based on bankbook, letter from the bank and minimum 400.000 Baht. I started the procedure September 28 as I can proof with my passport. I stayed skeptical about obtaining the final year’s visa. And to-day I stumbled indeed with the rest of the procedure in room 101. NO, here are the new rules after October 1st!

After my question why because I started procedure September 28 her answer was short: “that’s another department. Here we stick to the new rules.”

Is this the famous “officers’ interpretation allowed” or has the different “departments” in the same body different rules?

Is there a feasible possibility to address a complaint as they let you know after you have done the final apply?

    INTERPRETATION, BUROCRATION OR ARBITRARY?

"Is this the famous “officers’ interpretation allowed” or has the different “departments” in the same body different rules?"

As I did not complied anymore I had to take steps I wanted to take but in a later stadium, not over-hasty and forced!

Result: I just received my "year-visa" but.....YES!, until coming September because......I started the whole procedure in.........September!

Now I understand also the logic, when one is familiar with the behavior of certain officers in Emigration, to take more tickets than one to be able to loose one turn when the specific officer is known as...... to be served by another one!

I also understand now during my hours of waiting why a certain officer has to push various times her button although more than enough "clients" are waiting.

  9. New immigration requirements:

Jeans & T shirts this line, suits and ties this line !

Reminds me of Singapore a loooong time ago: arriving at the airport one was confronted with a big bill-board showing a person, hippy-dressed with long hair crossed-out with a big cross and a person neatly dressed with an “accepted” sign. The long-haired people had the choice: at the airport to the hairdresser or returning home. :o

  10. I look forward to the day, when some has the balls, to take the immigration department to the International Court in the Hague, for seperating a man from his legally wedded wife!

Good luck with that.. But be sure to bring a case against virtually every country in the world when you do it..

You don't get an automatic right to live in any country just because you are married to someone..

This has been the case since the middle ages almost.

For those that are genuine there will be no problem. For those that are scamming expect to get caught out.

It's the same the world over.

Get a lawyer. Do the paperwork. Pay the fees, and everything will be fine.

Sit and whinge and moan and criticize and you can always expect your worst nightmares to come true.

"You don't get an automatic right to live in any country just because you are married to someone..

This has been the case since the middle ages almost."

    I think you are wrong!

  11. “fortune”-teller or…..

A couple of months ago I placed some ads with the content: “EXPATS GOING BACK TO EUROPE? We have property for sale in …………”.

As there are worldwide expats wanting to live again with their family for several reasons.

Apart from the fact that this ad had been flagged in a certain ad-site as “impropriate” (?) by, I think, local Estate Agents, it gave me an opportunity to start earning money now as a “fortune” teller never realizing that this header should be a bitter reality for lots of good willing and solvent Farangs who felt in love with the Thai country and culture, now falling in between the quay and the vessel. Thailand: your trees do not grow till in the heaven!

  12. This has been available for some time on a tourist visa with 21 days or more remaining. Recently they have ignored the 21 day requirement and (do to the new visa regulations) seem to be allowing the same change from 30 day entry without visa (at least until the end of this month).

"Recently they have ignored the 21 day requirement"

To-day in my case NOT in BKK. (The famous "discretion of the officer"??)

I may not complain: everything quite smooth and nice and helpfull officers but on the first floor she saw lack of days and was sent down again to obtain an extension up-to 21 days (3 days 1.900 Baht) and a lot of copies I needed for upstairs (marriage-visa). To the first floor again, lack of copies of course, relaxed interview, 2.000 Baht and back for the result after 6 days.

  13. I think is has more to do with the inefficient Thai banking system that is causing the problem than discriminating foreigners.

Also contributing to the problem is the central bank (BOT) that issues various rules and regulations and at time in conflict of previous rules and regulations. So what does an average teller at a Thai bank tell customers if they are in doubt of a new rule? Just refuse service and say no, alot easier than admitting not knowing the new rule or to converse in English with a foreigner.

Don't expect the manager to be helpful, some see themselves too important to even talk to a customer about a problem.

    :o

    Former banker

You all are perfectly right! It is like the Thai official rules and as they say in there rules: it is up to the descretion of the officer :D so: flexible laws and rules....

I got an account in September last year only showing my passport with a visa on entry, without having a permanent residence.

Anyway, another Ayudhya branch-office very helpful, joking and laughing. Comment: Fashion Island is a very small office with too much work...... (so better loose business than work harder!). Also they are not following Buddha's teaching: don't lie because there does not seem to excist such a rule from the Thai Central Bank who indeed is giving rules and not the gouvernment as proved now: the Kasikorn Bank refused to close the day after the coupe saying that the notice was too short and they were preparing opening already; the only Thai bank (I have heard)!

  14. [i had a problem opening a account for a Farang friend also, I guess laws changed and you have to have a 1 year visa or Immigrant visa now, I just asked to speak to Manager and showed my account and insisted it can be done. Added that I my friend was making a large deposit to open it and it was allowed. Have a local Thai address handy and ask for email access pin codes so you can look online right up from and be prepared for atleast 1 hr wait and paperwork possibly.

IF your idea is right: again a farang-unfriendly rule chasing them out of the country as so many with good money already!

IF laws changed concerning that, think of the following:

a farang has been maried to a Thai national and want to apply for a marriage visa. He has to show 400.00 at his bank-book. Impossible to get a bank-account without a work-permit or a years' visa and he just want to have a year-visa! :o

  15. I Have just been refused to open a bank account by a bitchy female staff-member of Ayudhya Bank in Fashion Island although I have already an account from another branch-office of that bank, opened without any problems.

Can somebody explain to me why business-enterprises are refusing clients, so business?

This must be, again, generated by a general Thai gouvernment-rule/law or what? If so: :o again! (they must have already a lot!).

That's strange. Maybe she tried to tell you that -in her understanding- it was not possible to open 2 accounts in the same bank with the same name, at differents branches ?

Why don't you try to transfer your first account to the new branch ?

Oh, I didn't know about 2 bank-accounts! I have to go anyway to the main-account bank next week and I'll ask them to do that because now they are too far away of where I'm living. Thaks anyway.

    :D

  17. I do not understand all this trouble.

Make a legal Visa - and stay in Thailand as long as you want legally.

Non Immigrant -B- = Set up a company, apply for a work permit, and get a 1 year visa

Non Immigrant -O- = You are older than 50 year - you deposit THB 800.000 in a Thai Bank - and get your 1 year visa

Non Immigrant -O- = You marry a Thai lady - you deposit THB 400.000 in a Thai Bank - and get your 1 year visa

You not have to marry your gf - hundreds of Issaan ladies marry you only for visa matters - and your problem is solved too.

You not have to marry your gf - hundreds of Issaan ladies marry you only for visa matters - and your problem is solved too.

I am geting sick of these answers and I hope that the Thai authorities can get rid of this crap! :o

  18. As so many people I guess I'm also stuck, just waiting for (enough) money from abroad when I have sold my property to be able to arrange things how they should be. Doing nothing illegal here, peacefull beeing married and shoveling money into this country of ad-hoc decisions.

As a lot of cases are different I cannot find the answer at the following:

do they check also their computerfiles or are they only viewing the amount of visable visa; as I just used a new passport so they only can see the September-one.

By the way, I just heard from somebody (Thai) that she phoned to Emigration BKK and the lips are tight! NOBODY knows, so I think there is radio-silence untill the final orders from Emigration as Sunbelt announced to be at the 15th.

They only said to visit their site and mentioned something about changing rules for marriage-visa! OH no!!!! :D Increase???

    A tip:

when you are using a brand-new passport and want to leave Thailand calculate some time extra for optional Emigration handling: you will be sent back to a seperate office to transfer your excisting visa in the old passport into the new one. Only after that you can go to stamp-out! There they asked me 40 Baht for the fees (?). Time at a "normal" border without queus around 20 minutes. So be carefull when you are "last-minute" at the airport!

    :o

  19. New to me that mr. Insp. leaves cookies ... for the very good reason that I've set my Firefox to delete cookies on exit ... a generaly good thing to do ... The disadvantage is that you might have to enter username and password every time you visit your favourites ... but who would want to have those things stored in one's cookiefolder anyway?

OK, but WHAT are they doing or CAN they do with it????

  20. :DBleedin' ... why was a mail-provider [www.terra.es] banned ? :D

:D I will not put a link to a Dutch site, to ask you, if you can enter it from TiT ... :D I might get banned myself :D.

THAT was the silly thing: just because of the links to :D sites! But they left Google, Yahoo etc. etc. etc. untouched :o (???)

So in fact anyone with a homepage can suffer because when your hoster is hosting some "dirty" money makers you can forget your site in Thailand!

My hoster (in Holland :D ) is trying to avoid these problems in his contract:

"You will not knowingly or recklessly post, link to or transmit:

any material that is unlawful, threatening, abusive, harmful, malicious, libellous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, profane or otherwise objectionable in any way; or....."

There is the whole problem. What is wrong with the Dutch by the way??
