  1. You said "very finely ground chicken bone "...How fine of it?? as powder or just finely chopped bone?

the bones, though not ground into a powder, are ground fine enough where you wouldn't need to worry about a dog choking on it.

thanks for the info, BambinA, and happy 35th! you've been a big help to many people in this forum, your posts are always informative and entertaining. keep up the fine work.

  2. my wife has started buying very finely ground chicken bone (mostly from the neck i think). we boil it up and add it to the dry dog food (alpo), the alpo making up the majority of the meal. when it's boiled, it tastes good enough for me to eat, smells just like chicken soup, a bit of a fatty layer on top, but not too much.

i would think this would be good for dogs, but maybe i'm wrong. between 7 dogs (3 bigger,4 smaller), we use 2 of the standard "soft drink" sized plastic bags which are right full of the bone/broth mixture.

we used to buy pig bones, boil them up the same way, and mix the broth with the dry food, then give the bones to the dogs to chew on.

i know there are some learned people in this forum, just wondering what most here would think is the best way to go, or if in fact it's not a good idea to do this.

thanks in advance to any people who reply,

  3. 2 irishmen were trying to measure the height of a pole with a steel tape, but the tape would keep bending and falling before they could reach the top of the pole.

a blonde comes by and asks "what are you guys trying to do?"

they tell her "we're trying to find the height of this bloody pole, but our tape measure keeps bending before it gets to the top."

blonde points to the base of the pole and says "see that pin there? if you pull out that pin, you can lay the pole down to the ground and then measure it"

they pull the pin, lower the pole to the ground. the blond grabs the tape and measures the pole.

"12 feet, 6 inches" she says proudly, and walks away.

"typical blonde" says one irishman to the other "we ask her for the height and she gives us the length"

  4. No offense but I thought this forum was for people to ask questions and discuss things related to farming
    .

no offense meant and no offense taken. you're onto a good thing in this forum, i was just trying to help you get the most out of it.

    good luck with the land,

    tp

  5. kolohe,

scroll down a bit on this page, you'll see a thread about "farming self suffiency". a ton of good info there.

also helps to search this forum, if you do a little legwork here first, post questions with a little more info about your own situation, you will get a more positive feedback.

please, no offense, but i've seen questions like yours countless times in the farming section. i don't post much, mostly just lurk, but i can sense that a lot of people here get tired of answering the same question over and over.

you wrote: "I'm in the information collection stage so throw out anything you got"

better if you: "find out everything you can" first. it doesn't take long to get a decent grasp of the pros and cons.

again, no offense meant, just a little constructive criticism. good luck with the land if you buy it.

  6. I am a Leo (born in July).

My best Thai mate is a Leo also.

Now I discover my new g/f is a Leo !!!

    Strange.

Another thing, as we were all talking birthdays last night in the pub :-

The Thai's could not understand why I have no idea what day i was born on as they all remember the day. He born on a Saturday and she on a Wednesday. I forget the others.

Thai's seem to think it important.

When I mentioned I know my birth weight, they laughed and said that is deffo not important.

    Ah well.

    Weird :o

just wondering, what kind of beer do you drink in thailand?

  7. Our raised salad beds are between 3/5 mtrs long and a mtr or so wide, when the produce is ready, the market lady takes the lot, giving me the job of cleaning, manuring and reseeding the bed, this usually takes about 2 days for 1 bed, !!!

Now if i had a small rotavator, like a Merry Tiller or Howard, it would only take 2 hours, do any of you good farmers here know where i could buy such a thing in Thailand, Ive looked at the Kubuta type thing, but its far to unweildly for what i want, thanks for any help and advice, Cheers, ickey,

i searched hi and low for one for a long time with no luck. finally found one at the farmer fair (agricultural exhibition) in khon kaen, so you might want to check out something like that if there's one in your area. i forget the name of the company but pretty sure it was in udon thani.

mine works good. even if the ground is hard as concrete, a good heavy watering will soften it up enough to make it "tillable".

hope this is of some help.

  8. A woman pregnant with triplets was walking down the street when a

Masked robber ran out of a bank and shot her three times in the

    Stomach.

Luckily the babies were OK. The surgeon decided to leave the bullets

In because it was too risky to operate. She gave birth to two

Healthy daughters and a healthy son.

All was fine for 16 years, and then one

Daughter walked into the room in tears. "What's

Wrong?" asked the mother. "I was taking a tinkle and this bullet came

    Out," replied the daughter.

The mother told her it was okay and explained what happened 16 years

    Ago.

About a week later the second daughter walked into the room in tears.

"Mom, I was taking a tinkle and this bullet came out." Again the

Mother told her not to worry and explained what happened

A week later her son walked into the room in tears.

"It's okay" said the Mom, "I know what happened.

You were taking a tinkle and a bullet came out."

"No," said the boy, "I was playing with myself and I shot the dog."

  9. golfer goes into a confession booth, says "forgive me father for i have sinned"

"what did you do my son" says the priest

"well, i used some foul language on the golf course"

    "please explain" says the priest

"well, i put the ball on the tee on the 1st hole, i nail that ball as hard, as straight and as true as i've ever hit a ball in my life, but it hit a power line and dropped 50 yds. in front of me"

"thats when you swore, my son?" says the priest

"no father, i was walking up to make my 2nd shot when a squirrel came out of the trees, grabbed my ball, and headed back into the trees with it"

"then you swore? asked the priest

"no, father, an eagle flew out of the sky, grabbed the squirrel, with my ball, and flew off way over the trees with it"

"so then you used the foul language?" asked the priest

"no, no father. the squirrel dropped the ball, it hit a rock, bounced off a tree, and rolled within 8 inches of the hole"

the priest says "you missed the f*ckin' putt, didn't you"

  10. thanks for that snippet of info, chownah.

assuming my bananas, which are approaching 2 years and fruiting very well, start falling over/breaking and i manage to transplant some new ones to a different spot. any advice on how to completely eradicate the existing ones? seems to me they'd be hard to kill, but maybe i'm wrong. would it be wise to completely dig out all the old roots and backfill after?

i hated them when the mother in law planted them, but they do throw off some nice shade until my other trees are big enough to do so. also interesting how the fruit matures from that pointy red bulb. interesting 'cause i never had a clue before that how the fruit came to be.

anyways, thnx in advance for any comments.

  11. i've heard it's possible to take a tough steak which it would normally take a hacksaw to cut and turn it into a mouth watering peice of meat where the knife falls through by itself, only by placing green papaya slices on it.

ok, exaggerating slightly, but does green papaya actually tenderize meat?

    thnx for any replies

    TP

  12. By the way I built floating cages into which fry are placed initially and are released to the ponds at about 7cm,mortality using this method is way down on industry norms.

just curious how you built yours, the size, etc. if you had a picture it would be nice.

i have a few large rogue pla chon in my pond which the wifes mom introduced from another pond. anyways, a few months later we caught one about 2 kgs, it was kept alive a few hours in a small concrete tank filled with water. in this time it barfed up 3 fingerlings, pla duk, about 3 inches long each. the pond is likely full of them because there were pla chon fry everywhere.

on another note, lets say i wanted to empty ALL fish from my pond (without pumping out the water). obviously i'd net as much as i could, then i was thinking electric shock. anyone try this? i like pla chon, but if i was to do it again, i think i'd leave them out.

  13. I'd like to get a really decent bike, but I'm sure whatever I get will be stolen

eventually and I've already had 2 Cannondales stolen in the USA, not looking

to have another bike stolen that is WORTH something.

    that's a bit pessimistic, isn't it?

  14. since october 1, 2006, i have been in and out of the country 3 times, staying for 16 days, 27 days, and 18 days. (i work out of the country, normally 28/28 rotation)

am i allowed a 4th trip into thailand under the new immigration laws? i was under the impression that you were only allowed 3 trips in every 6 months.

i will get the type "o" visa (i'm married to a thai ) eventually.

    thanks in advance for replies/help.
