Could you explain how someone earning 33,000 baht a month can save millions?

If the living wage is 6000 why spend 33000 why not live of 13000 then save the rest in 4 years you have 1000000 then at 13000 at month you have enough for 8 years .but Thai people live for today and like to show off when they have money .but hey ho it's come home to roost now.i see it where we are workers returning with nothing after years of earning big money.its the Thai way never change.

Pattaya: The New Walking Street - so much more than just cable burying, says mayor

An upbeat Mayor Sontaya Khunpluem in Pattaya has said that the work being done on Walking Street is so much more than just cable burying.

He's going to transform the street into something "suay ngaam" (beautiful) that the resort can be proud of.

While he stopped just short of calling it the eighth wonder of the modern world he was buoyant with optimism.

The road surface was going to be completely renewed, he said and that included the drain and pipe covers.

No stone would be left unturned (well, you know what we mean) to upgrade the ENTIRE length of the street.

    Not just that.

A study is being done to install a domed roof over the street that will keep everyone dry and enable all sorts of activities to happen there.

All that is missing are the tourists, and those will be back later in the year in their familiar droves.

For now the mayor encouraged visitors to take pictures of the street as it looks at the moment.

Then come back at the end of the year and take some more.

The before and afters will really show what he's talking about!

Mayor Sontaya was talking to Sophon Cable TV who published pictures of him giving a thumbs up by a large hole with brightly clad ladies on the left and officials in more somber tones on the right.

Critics online - especially expats in Pattaya on Thaivisa - have expressed a degree of skepticism about the plans.

One or two even unkindly liked the mayor's efforts to putting lipstick on a pig.

    Just you wait!

Medical certificates now mandatory for driving licenses and new car purchases in Thailand

    breaking news banner V2.png

Anyone applying for a driving license in Thailand will soon need to submit a medical certificate in order to prove they do not have any underlying health conditions which may impair their ability to drive.

The requirement applies to all procedures related to driving licenses, including new applications and renewals.

It also applies to all forms of land transport and medical certificate is even required to be shown when purchasing a new vehicle.

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) made the announcement on its Facebook page, stating that the requirement  will come into effect on Friday, February 19.

The department said the move was to help reduce road accidents in the country, which is notorious for its dangerous roads which claim more than 20,000 deaths annually.

The news comes as a number of  DLT services, including booking an appointment for driving tests, had been moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

TAT chief admits it could be THREE YEARS before Thai tourism is back to normal

    Image: The Bangkok Insight

Following widespread criticism that Thailand's tourism authorities were being overly optimistic some realism and acceptance of the future is starting to set in.

The penny seems to have finally dropped with Tourism of Thailand governor Yutthasak Suphasorn who was speaking to The Bangkok Insight yesterday.

Though he still expressed hope that the so-called "vaccine passport" could help by ending tourists' need to quarantine.

His comments come as industry leaders have urged the government to save what is left of the ailing tourism sector - 20% of Thai GDP at least - before it is too late and there is nothing for foreign tourists to return to.

Yuttthasak was no longer plucking figures from the ether about 10 million foreign tourists visiting this year. In fact no figures were given at all.

His comments were much more guarded though there was still some cause for optimism in his remarks.

He said that it would be 2 to 3 years before Thailand's tourism sector was back to anything like normal. He said he expects foreigners to start coming again by mid-year "but not fully".

He thought that this January had seen the worst of Covid and things were looking brighter now.

He expected Thais to start travelling again at Songkran (in April) claiming that they were raring to go. He expected the government to be facillitating this.

Last year the entire festival was cancelled amid fears of a spread of the virus, notes Thaivisa. What form it takes this year remains to be seen and will largely depend on what degree the second wave outbreak is under control come the tradition Thai New Year holidays.

Yutthasak admitted the tourism operators were in dire straits; he stressed the need for support for staff and downtime to be used in what he called "upskill" and "reskill" of workers.

He observed that the tourism economy was an important driver for the wider Thai economy.

The governor struck a positive note when it came to certain aspects of the return of foreign tourists.

He said that he was receiving good reports from 29 TAT offices worldwide regarding vaccine programs abroad.

He cited the example of the Scandinavians who he claimed all wanted to beat a path to Thailand's door in the hot season.

Thaivisa notes that this seemed strange. Scandinavians were previously well known for largely ignoring Thailand in the hot season and in the European summer, favoring places like Krabi in particular in the cold European winter.

Many TAT offices, he said, pointed to the return of foreign tourists to Thailand in the FOURTH quarter. Previously he was bullish about the third quarter that begins in June.

He also noted that tourism minister Pipat Ratchakitprakan's "vaccine passport" plan had merit and had been discussed at a small cabinet committee.

If given the go ahead this would see foreigners not having to quarantine when they come to Thailand.

All along since the days of the much ridiculed STV, quarantine has been seen by everyone outside the tourism ministry and TAT as a major obstacle to foreign tourism.

The special tourist visa is now not even being mentioned.

Other tourism leaders quoted by the media also put faith in a vaccine passport and said that government support for tourism businesses needed to be fast before they went under.

Yutthasak said they needed to "grit their teeth".

Government policy regarding tourism needed to be clear, said the leaders.

And therein lies the nub of the matter.

Critics have noted the "flip-flop" of the Thai government pinning their hopes on one false dawn after another. They have said there is a lack of overall strategy with different ministries, departments and individuals competing for the limelight with one ill thought out scheme after another.

Now many are pointing fingers when it comes to the rollout of vaccinations inside Thailand.

With June before mass vaccinations begin some are saying this is too slow while the whole procurement process of vaccination doses, the companies involved and possible vested interests, are all coming under increased scrutiny both in Thailand and abroad.

Comments from senior leaders like health minister Anutin Charnvirakul and DPM Prawit Wongsuwan in dismissing criticism and being economical with information have done nothing to allay concerns.

Thai hospitality magnate calls on govt to allow vaccinated foreigners entry into Thailand

A leading figure in the Thai hospitality industry has called on the government to speed up its roll out of the COVID-19 vaccine.

William Heinecke, the head of Minor Group, one of Thailand’s largest hotel chains has issued an open letter to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha specifying a series of recommendations that he says are needed to kick start the country economy and Thailand’s decimated tourism industry.

In his letter, the American-born Thai businessman puts forward four recommendations which include allowing hotel staff to be among the first to receive the vaccine, expediting the rollout  of the vaccine, quarantine free travel for vaccinated travellers, and so called ‘vaccine passports’ to allow international travellers to enter Thailand without restrictions.

Mr Heinecke says the Thai government should make sure hotel staff and those working in the hospitality industry should be included in the first phase of the vaccine rollout. “Such people continue to operate on the front lines, interacting with international and domestic travelers, risking contraction and further transmission,” Mr Heinecke says.

“Prioritizing them along with healthcare workers and other high-risk groups for the vaccine would provide a necessary layer of protection for the country”.

Mr Heinecke says that Thailand should “consider more vaccine options as a matter of urgency” and adds “our current timeline is still not fast enough in procuring sufficient shots and inoculating the whole population”.

He goes on to call for those vaccinated against the virus to be exempted from the current mandatory 14 day quarantine and says that so-called ‘vaccine passports’ should be used as a way to enable foreigners to visit the country without restrictions.

He cites the Seychelles as an example, which he says is already allowing vaccinated foreigners to enter the country.

He suggests that Phuket could be used as a pilot model to test the return of  international travellers who have been vaccinated. If successfully implemented, the model should then be rolled out to other key destinations such Koh Samui and Pattaya.

My address has already been registered with immigration when I extended my visa.  TM28s completed also.  You know where I live.  Forget the reams of forms and paperwork.  Just send me a card with a brochure showing a list of what hotels are participating and the prices.   If the value is worthwhile, I’ll avail myself of the offers.  If there is any price gouging, I’ll stay home.

    Thanks!

They will never never never give us anything the price will go up to justify the offer.as far as national parks where when and how many probably all in bangkok when a cup of coffee and food will be hiked to justify the entrance fee no the thai guv. Will give us nothing.stay local put your money into local shops and services you get better thought of.

Only the urge to make money will bring them to reason.
But Thais have been brainwashed for 4 months and the evil foreigner was made a scapegoat for their misery. What will it take to reverse this process?

Plus the virus is not affected by cold or hot conditions .the fact that people die in small villages or small towns without the need for a port mortom the figures they give out mean nothing.
