  2. I am on my 4th Personal Laptop.

Asus > Fujitsu > sony Vaio > sony Vaio > and I think in another few years I will get a sony Vaio again.

I travel Regularly - my lap top back gets knocked, banged and the build quality of the sony is good enough to withstand the relative battering it gets.

I have used an estimated 10 other brands of Laptop while working for various clients. . i.e. IBM, Dell, Toshiba, Compaq. All were ok, but I would still spend the extra for the piece of mind Sony gives me in its build quality. Reading the other posts, perhaps I am lucky having had no problems with both Sonys I have owned. Given the choice I'd buy another.

However, I’d like to add that I also rate Fujitsu laptops.

If those knocking the Sony laptops are doing so from experience of ownership, then fair enough, but I’d not be talking any advice from those who just like to throw opinion down based on a whim.

  4. I plan to take a 3-4 day vacation in early Feb to the Pranburi area.

Do any of you have any experience and recommendations for resorts etc ?

On the web they appear over priced for what they are....

i.e. 5000 bhat per night for not much more than a recently painted bungalow / hut !

I also might throw a game of golf in ? any ideas of nice courses near Pranburi ?

And.. is there any wakeboarding in the area ? Cable Ski or Boat rental ?

    Idea's welcomed.

    Rgds....

  5. Hi has anyone flown by Emirates business class Bangkok to Birmingham lately is it good or bad. I have been told that the in flight entertainment is good but what about food and seating what is the seating is it 2 3 2 ? do the seats go all the way down bed style ?. I will be flying with my 6 month old baby are they good with babys all repotrts welcome thanks

I have flown Business back to the UK on many occasions and can confirm that everytime I have flown with Emirates I have been very satisfied.

As I pay for my own tickets I try to limit the cost and often seek out offers.

i.e. 2 for one deals (the Girlfriend often tags along). .. no idea about babies !

In order of preference (best first)…

    Qatar.

(Great Value for money, great service and great seating – Excellent all round)

Over Christmas I decided to take a risk and fly with Qatar. 72,000 per person. Which was the most competitive at the time. The seats moved flat – although at about 160-170 deg not a horizontal 180 deg. The Qatar business terminal was great. The only downside was traveling via Manchester – but the price benefit clearly offset this.

    Emirates.

(Good value for money – OK seating – great service – great schedule / my 1st choice until I’d flown Qatar Airways – Approx 10 trips, never disappointed)

Emirates to Birmingham cost 75,000 per person in the summer, and 93,000 per person over the Christmas period. The Terminal in Emirates is busy, but OK, the lounge is busy, but also ok, nothing glorious. The seats on all my flights were 2+2+2 across. The seats did not go flat – but reclined a lot to about 160 deg (guess). The food and service is always fantastic. The departure and arrival times (on both departure and return) are convenient.

    Gulf.

(Great Value for money – not flown with them yet though – always fully booked !)

Gulf Air have been doing a 2 for one deal (but only fly to Heathrow or Manchester). Last time I traveled back that was approximately 63,000 bhat per person.

    KLM.

    (Rubbish – Expensive)

I have also flown KLM in summer 2006– both my girlfriend and I were shocked at how rubbish the business class is, and will not be paying 120,000 per seat again.

It seems to me that the middle eastern airlines offer great deals and service and appear to be the best value. IF you don’t mind the stop over half way.

How these compare with SIA and others I’m not sure – But BA, TG, KLM etc are heavily over priced when compared and they don’t fly into BHX so a change over is needed anyway.

    Hope that helps.

  7. Hope they flip the switch correctly - I cringe when they do this sort of thing. :o

One More thing... when I have called or SMS'd into Thailand from overseas the 08 does not work, I've had to use / dial to the original number (without the additional 8).... It will be interesting to see how much confusion this creates the future from overseas callers if this remains the case.....

  8. Just got back from Bkk where we stayed at the SD Avenue in Pinklao. No problems there either. My wife did all the talking at the reception, and was even given a special reduced 'Thai rate' on production of her ID card.

This after we tried unsuccessfully to book the same hotel through a third party company on the internet at a higher rate.

I have experienced similar situations to the above with the twist that its is me (the farang) who is apparently a less desirable guest.

My girlfriend and I recently nipped down to Pattaya (from bkk) to spend a couple of days wakeboarding there.

Upon leaving the lake we started minor hunt for a reasonable hotel to stay at in Jomtien. The Jomtien Palms resort looked acceptable from the outside, so (as I was rather fatigued) while I waited in the car my girlfriend ran in, flashed her Thai Airways ID in the hope of a little extra discount for us (I make this note here to point out that she is a lady of easy virtue to no one other than myself (I hope) and the staff will have very easily recognized this, read on…)

The Rate was acceptable for us, I grabbed our bags and proceeded to check-in. At this point she was quite rudely told that Farangs pay full price, and cannot get the price originally quoted.

I was quite surprised at this – and quietly pointed out that we no longer require a room.

We checked into the Montien in Pattaya, mentioned our annoyance at the treatment we received at the previous hotel we’d enquired at, genuine shock and surprise was shown. We were treated wonderfully at the Montien and faith in the Thai service sector while shaky was restored.

Has anyone had this experience before? I have been in Thaland for a number of years and have not experienced this (in such an obvious manner) before, is this common in Pattaya and Jomtien?

Thirdly, is this extra ‘farang charge’ for all non-thai’s ? do indians, Cambodians, Malaysians etc.. have this cheeky extra charge ?

  9. Another clarification provided was that they will count the exact number of days in country for the last 180 (since Oct 1st 06), not the number of stamps and take each one as 30 days (which was my previous fear as I was leaving the kingdom for the 3rd time

The above paragraph does not make sense to me. The items in my bold say they are counting days, as they have always said. But then you say "take each one (stamp) as 30 days" which would indicate you believe they will be counting stamps.

Another clarification provided was that they will count the exact number of days in country for the last 180 (since Oct 1st 06), not[/b] the number of stamps and take each one as 30 days (which was my previous fear as I was leaving the kingdom for the 3rd time

Not wishing to appear impolite, but you may have let your foot off the clutch a little prematurely there.... I did Put a 'Not' in there to indicate that they are counting days and not the number of stamps. I hope this has cleared up for everyone that as far as I have been told (by whom I would hope is a reliable source of information) they are only counting days..

  10. Count it from Oct 1? Or count it from the first visa run you did after Oct 1?

Information as I have it after Asking the Immigration officials upon exiting Bangkok (via Suvanabumi Airport). All Days Count only From 01-Oct-06, further clarified that days from before the 1st Oct, will not be counted.

Another clarification provided was that they will count the exact number of days in country for the last 180 (since Oct 1st 06), not the number of stamps and take each one as 30 days (which was my previous fear as I was leaving the kingdom for the 3rd time in about 45 days to re-enter for the 3rd time in about 55 days).

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a slightly different note, I am wondering if anyone can provide any further insight as to what its best to do in my current situation.

I am a consultant within the oil industry working Throughout the Middle East, Asia, Australasia and sometime Europe (but not in Thailand).

As many others, Bangkok is where I have chosen to live. I am 30 years Old, Not Married.

I Work approximately 5 months of the year in broken spells, i.e. about 2-4 weeks working with 2-6 weeks break (Generally Spent in Thailand).

The simple VOA no longer appears to favor those in my situation.

I would be grateful for any information, ideas from those in my situation or those who understand it.

In advance, thank you for your comments.

  11. I am looking for some 'useful' information to ease my confusion with the VOA updates.

I am a consultant within the oil industry working Throughout the Middle East, Asia, Australasia (but not in Thailand).

As many others, Bangkok is where I have chosen to live. I am 30 years Old, Not Married, financially very comfortable.

The simple VOA no longer appears to favor those in my situation.

I would be grateful for responses from those ‘not of opinion’ but ‘of experience’ with this situation.

In advance, thank you for your comments.

  12. Firstly –

Yes, BBC five live was blocked – I’ve been streaming the BBC for while now and was relying on 5live tomorrow evening, I just checked it out for the Swiss game with no success other than‘due to contractual issues……’ spiel….

Thank you for the talksport link (http://www1.talksport.net/index.asp?a=1)

I can’t check it until tonight’s (Mondays) Spain Vs Tunisia Game.

Has anyone had any success streaming talksport with any games over the weekend ?

And as backup – has anyone heard of any alternatives for streaming internet radio while watching the domestic TV for the football ?

    Cheers……..
