  1. Alright, so my soon to be wife should get a 60 days tourist visa from the Thai embassy in Vientiane, extend it with 30 at the immigration office - and then go to laos after 90 days and do it all again. By then we hope to have the marriage certificate ready and from there, she will jump on my visa and stay with me. That sounds like a plan smile.png

    Thank you very much!

Yes, but you won't be able to flip-flop to and fro borders too many times. Eventually immigration will catch onto it and nab your wife and probably send her back to Laos.

I did this very thing for my first year in Thailand and they caught on and pulled me aside. Fortunately for me brother-in-law is a big-shot in the Thai Royal Police and a simple phone call got me off the hook, stamped, and re-entered in minutes. Your wife likely will not have that luxury. So be careful. Think of her safety and well being and yours.

    this is not true;

she will be able to get lots of tourist visas as she is returning to her home country to get them, ( unlike you who i am sure are not Laotian)

my Cambodian gf travels back to Cambodia every 3 months to get a tourist visa, i also send a letter stating she is staying with me and i am covering all her bills while she is here and i am on a retirement extension,

If ur gf does apply write up a letter to the thai embassy stating ur covering all her bills

Actually, eventually there will come a time when a passport is "red stamped" for having too many tourist visas in it. Just as 30 day visa waivers can not be used to endlessly enter Thailand and come back the same day, tourist visas are not designed for the purpose of living here. It may be possible to get a few and stay for up to a year or so (with border runs) but eventually Vientiane in particular will red stamp her passport and won't allow her to get another tourist visa. I'm sure Phnom Penh is not all that different.

2 or 3 tourist visas in a row should be OK, maybe even 4 but after a while she will be asked to get a dependent visa or be denied altogether. Not a good way to start a life together.

This has definitely been my experience. When they nabbed me, they wrote a notice in my passport and asked me to sign it before getting back in.

After a bit I had to return to the United States for an emergency. While I was in country I got a new passport with fresh, clean pages, then applied for a visa from the US. I got the visa and breezed on through upon my return.

  2. It takes a long time to get married in Laos. They do not recognize foreign mariages here. We have just begun the process, and the lawyers are positive to have the mariage certificate in 6 - 8 months from now. We will not be legally married until then.

    • Once you have the extension of stay your wife (legal) and child can both apply for visas and extensions of stay on the back of your extension. - Won't I be able to bring my daughter from the beginning on a Danish passport?
    • Yes your daughter will be able to stay without any problem.
    • You're future wife will have to do border runs every 30 days or use tourist visas and exit every 60 days. She can extend 60 day stays by 30 days at an immigration office for 1,900 baht.

You could be right, for all I know. I was hopping around Asia to get my visas, taking every advantage, taking all for granted because my connections ensured a smooth passage for me in just about anything I did in Thailand. And in my last eighteen months in Thailand I finally met the right corrupt "officials" and didn't need do squat anymore.

But again, I would check things out, and check 'em kinda close. I sure would not be taking advice from anyone on this board especially. Triple check it. Especially with a little one to think about.

  4. Why are you staying in Thailand? What's the allure? Why not stay in her country or yours?

Not relevant at all, but nice of you to ask :)

We both prefer to stay in thailand and used to stay there together. It is more convenient, cleaner and in Laos a foreigner can not stay with a Lao national except if the are married. It might be hard for anyone to picture, but in my opinion traffic is scarier here. I like Thai food way better than Lao food. I do love Isan food, but up here it's more the prototype of Isan food than the dishes we are used to in Thailand :) No you know!

Well, good fortune to you both, and also to the little one.

I lived in Thailand for well over two years. Cannot say I liked it much at all. There are a myriad of much better places to live. So, naturally I get curious when people say they actually want to go live there. I immediately feel the need to ask, what for?

    Thanks, for your reply.

  5. Big Rat Snake. Killed a few minutes ago. I always let him go before, but this time he got into the kitchen and terrified all the women. Too bold for his breeches. Bye, bye, big, handsome guy! Magnificent fellow, really. Shame to kill him. (My bamboo is about four feet long).

  6.

Having lived and worked in Japan, there is great rivalry between Osaka and Tokyo, so much so that in Tokyo you walk on the right of an escalator, in Osaka the left.

Residing in Tokyo but travelling to Osaka after a couple of visits, it all slips into place, respect is given and normality is adhered to.

On one occasion, in Tokyo I am on the right, going down the steps to the platform, and I am in a bit of a rush, and an obvious Osakan is trying to ascend on his left.

    Worlds will collide.

At 120 kg descending, his 60 kg ascending met, great embarrassment from him, and apologies as he picked himself up from the steps.

I do something similar getting on and off elevators in Bangkok.

I am 5'8", 210 lb., martial artist, weightlifter, etc., can be imposing when I choose it. When getting on or off an elevator, I simply stand squarely in front of the door. When it opens I yield to no one. I walk forward and if they don't get out of my way... oh, well, they get bumped. No sweat off me.

I know, it sounds like a jerk thing to do, but it is the only way I have found to get on or off an elevator in Bangkok without getting killed.

Correct. It is a jerk thing to do.

Thanks for reinforcing the stereotype that Foreigners are complete jackwads.

    Well done.

I disagree on the jerk thing, what difference is a little intentional intimidation compared to ignorrance, or mindless ignorance, I would respect the mindful intimidation any day over the other

    A perfect argument.

  8. My advice: If you want to be treated as an adult it is necessary to grow up!

Now imagine the outcry if a Mr. Takagi from Japan boards a plane with his doll:

    Trottla sex dolls for pedophiles

"The dolls are an outlet for those who, as I feel attracted to children," says Shin Takagi, head of the firm Trottla. According to information from the Swiss newspaper "20 Minuten", Takagi is even a pedophile. "My company helps these people to live out their fetish on legal and ethical manner. Life is not worth living if you have to suppress his needs constant," he says.

In the US, pedophilia was to be accepted simply as another sexual orientation by the AMA. But there was too much outcry over it and so they backed away from it... for now. It will be back and will be accepted sooner or later.

This narcissistic world creeps ever closer to the "anything goes" modus operandi I mentioned earlier.

Let them have their dolls. Literally no harm in that. But moms and dads better keep an ever closer watch on their children these days. That's for sure.

  9. This is truly a bizarre country....

let's not forget about marrying twin siblings at a young age to ward off evil spirits....

and then you also have the little ghosts from the temples Thais keep in their homes....Kuman Thong

everyday they will give the kuman thong something to drink and some food and provide it with toys and clothes....

ohmy.png As a westerner, it is so strange to me.... but it is interesting culturally and somewhat harmless.... but still, what's with all the superstitious crap here? And never bring up ghosts with Thais either.... that's another major source of weird here.

Absolutely not harmless. To the contrary, it, belief, is incredibly dangerous. If people actively, openly believe stupid nonsense like this - then anything goes. When absurdities like these are openly accepted and practiced, there is no telling what else people are willing to believe and to do. Such people are perfectly conditioned for a dictator to come along and do whatever he likes with this new herd of sheep.

  10. The other day I was making a list on the pros and cons of staying here in Thailand. I have lived her for two years now and I always thought I would get used to it, so to speak. I always thought I would be able to overlook all the silliness and get along just fine in spite of all the superstition, lies, fakery, corruption, racism, begging, and thievery. That never happened. And it's things like these that help me to make the decision not to stay here much easier. The irrationality and stupidity of the people in this country is sometimes very difficult to believe. It's horrifying. I don't want it to be true. How can this be true?

I thought things would improve, for myself, and for Thailand as I went along. But there is no improvement whatsoever. In fact it has only gotten worse. The more I learn, the more appalled I become with every day that passes. The decline is imminent. It's time to go.

  11. Our 8 year old will forever have facial scars from a face bite while petting one that she petted every day....snapped - turned and bit her on both sides of her mouth....

Last visit there they turned to snap bite me while petting them - 3 times...

These are dogs that know us....They now keep one completely locked away from everybody it attacks anything - but it's the other one that snapped....

Apparently they bond as pups and anyone not in that intimate circle is in peril.....

They are nicely muscled and a strong animal for a medium sized dog.....

Sorry to hear about your child. My nephew was gashed across the face by a trusted family dog, too. Fifty six sutures across his face near his left eye. Scarred for life.

Children around here are all grown and off at college.

We live in a rural area and this newbie will be living in and out of doors, keep snakes at bay, be our friend, keep an eye on things, and breed.

He or she will not be living on a chain, though if female she will be living in a kennel during heat cycle.

  12. Hello! Anyone know where in this country I could find a Penguin wireless adapter for use with Free Software, particularly Trisquel 7.0 GNOME?

I can find them outside Thailand, of course, but shipping is outrageou$ and there is no guarantee the goods will even get here.

I am running said version of Trisquel on a Dell Latitude E5500/Intel CORE Duo.

    Anyone?

Also, I have two Broadcom wireless cards for said Dell computer. I switched them out for Intel and don't use them any longer. They gotta go. Want to sell or trade.

  13. There is a phenomena of unearned expectations sweeping the entire world. It is a natural byproduct of the Liberal Western goal of equality in outcomes, not equality in opportunity. This phenomena is leveraged upon others by guilt, pejorative, social boycott, and demands for unearned due as if the demands were self evident; it is being utterly rammed down America's throat irrespective of the people's demands. Thus, those disparate groups and individuals all demanding the fruits of other's labors are in essence crippling every aspect of the polity and governance. This good is being inflicted upon the masses in a concerted, Machiavellian manner. Crippling the borders enables the wooden horses.

America, being the poster child for the slide into Western Socialism, and the biggest kid on the block, best exemplifies all the unintended consequences of its race to the liberal bottom (However, EU ably illustrates this bankruptcy of reason as well). From the universities to the FBI, from State and Federal government hiring practices, to the IRS tax code, winners and losers are now chosen every time based solely on multiculturalism engineering and preferred constituency. The end result of this is the realization that simply demanding "stuff" results in the likely obtaining of "stuff." Therefore, there is now no end to the demands and protests sweeping the US. It is actually an ugly, disgusting stain on the citizens that they participate in their own abuse. "Restricting the borders is bad because... because... we feel." "Feeling" is the modus operandi of America's Winter.

This thinking now infects the entire US policy machine, and is evident here in the "hostage taking" regarding the outrageous notion that the US would dare enact self preservation mechanisms toward a rationale immigration/border policy. A relation to this can be noted in Trump's statement that "muslims should be banned." I don't comment one way or the other on that volatile point but opponents offer the outrage that it is unconstitutional; of course it is not. In fact, there is actually no policy offerings to enact sensible rules for protecting Americans that is not now met with overwhelming derision, outright lies, protests, PC groups leveraging accusations, guilt, etc., to stifle America's self defense.

The issue of the OP is just not isolated. It is part of the same constellation of signs and symptoms of a nation self destructing. The most unfortunate aspect is that once America is deconstructed the individual parts or even collective whole of what seems to be replacing it (a hybrid socialist fascist corporatocracy) have not one redeemable characteristic.

Not one redeemable characteristic. Not so, such an American will finally achieve social justice.

Your uncompromisingly harsh ideology of an individual's duty to maximise their opportunity in a non existent utopia where those opportunities are never equal is straight from the evangelical Puritan preachers of the 17th and 18th Centuries who believed that God's salvation is only bestowed those who work hard and achieve great works.

Your zeal is as intense as that of a zealot in any religion but your religion seems to be Hoover-esque 'rugged individualism' of times gone past. It makes sense that your apocalyptic vision is so catastrophic because to such a zealot, any revisionism in the polity towards social justice must seem like the 'end of days'. Well, it is probably the end of your days and your "America" will be transformed into something unrecognisable to the wannabe yeoman farmer politicians of yesteryear.

Personally I don't think you need to fear a society that strives for social justice; that aims for equality of outcomes. Such a society recognises that there is never any equality of opportunity. Elites always capture and control the channels and instruments of power and the wealth that accompanies this power. The Ivy League. The Greek Fraternities and Sororities. Inherited wealth. The Old Boy Network. All of that. You have correctly identified that many countries in Europe strive for equality of outcomes. Education through tertiary level is free in Germany. Finland is giving Euro 800 a month to all its citizens. The UK and other countries have a nationalised health care system. Some experiments work. Some don't. But American Exceptionalism keeps America as an exception. I blame the Puritans, in part. They infested the culture with this Work Ethic thing that has become harshly inhuman and inhumane in the American polity.

It is natural for old men to feel afraid of new things. You don't need to worry. American socialism will not result in guillotines being erected in Washington DC's equivalent to the Place de la Concorde. It will be a slow and tortuous process given the self interest of the rich, white families that have controlled American for so long.

I now see you with a beard. In the manner of John Cotton the Puritan Minister. Your writings against socialism make sense to me when I do that.

In any case, I really don't think that your anticipated socialist doomsday will be expedited by lose visa controls on foreign tourists. Being a frequent user of the ESTA visa waiver program, I really can't see how this may be contributing to the slide into Western Socialism.

The State (all of them, all through history, no exceptions), has always slid into bankruptcy in every conceivable manner and has taken the people, their only hope and lifeline, down with it. Then they resurrect a new State (it's nothing new--it's the same as the old), and keep right on going in the same manner as before with absolutely no lesson learned, with absolutely no regard for history and where they had just come from. And they will run this new State into the ground as well. And so it goes through the ages.

Young people are always sucked into believing stupidity, like socialism. Usually stemming from their fresh indoctrination at some university or another. They think they're on to something new and exciting. They think they will change the world and alleviate all suffering. But it's just the same old drivel. I have to chuckle. It only stands to reason. They have nothing, especially experience, that could tell them otherwise. The youngsters on the the left in the universities are literally no different than the ones on the right who run off to join the army and the Republican party. They are all part of the same killing machine, the same meat grinder, the same self-doubt, the same inner void, which no amount of erudition and/or killing can ever fill. We know this to be true because no one in their right mind would ever in a million years fall for any of this trash.

People are morose and lazy. So long as there are plenty of ignorant chimpanzees running around ready to follow fool orders and spread their dis-ease there will be no shortage of suffering for this species.

Nothing new under the sun. Same old, same old.

  14. This byline is much ado about nothing. Every country only wants people on their terms. America is at the point now that any effort to exert an intelligent defense of its destruction is met with derision. "America... but on our terms..." This OP is as stupid as the US is defenseless.

You do make a startlingly accurate point here.

I'm an American in Thailand. I've been hassled by immigration officers, locals, cops, and racist Thai who don't like "farang," etc. They want things on their terms, too. Of course. Who does not?

  15. As an ex-Merchant Seaman from '61 'till '03 I was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit most of the major ports of the U.S. including the Lakes area, Cleveland, Detroit !, (in '65 an eye opener for a young lad from dull U.K.) Chicago and even Duluth, N.York, Norfolk V. SavannaG,(fabulous) and N. Orleans which had a European type atmosphere and partytime,Long Beach C, Seattle, and a few others memory fails, in all of these places I met and drank with many good American people, kind and welcoming, and all ways interested in conversation. ( I was in L. beach san Pedro the day JFK was murdered) although I was only 17yrs at the time I can vividly remember being in a dockside bar watching events unfold, and many were weeping including me. But that was then. since that fateful, historic day the once great U.S. has been in decline, especially morally, those of you familiar with Bernays, Lippman, and L. Strauss will know why, will say no more on this subject because of censure. My last visit to Houston Bay area '02 Texas City, Galveston the locals were not as easy going, the huge weight problem, and the doomsday type tattoo work, were all signs to me, as these traits were yet not that obvious in Europe and Worlwide. So if the U.S. Immigration Dept, were to offer me a free ticket and a visa waiver I would say " no thankyou". Today I like all farang in LOS only know what is occurring in the U.S. through the censored screen of a TV, for me thats PressTV, I realize they have an agenda like all news channels, but what I see through their programs the U.S. is in trouble, as is Europe, It don't look good.

Agreed. I was born in December 1964; the very height and peak of American politcal and economic power. Since then it has been all decline.

America is now bankrupt in every way imaginable. I can't believe it still functions.

  16. Lol. If foreigners want to enter America unchecked, all they need do is pass through the southern border with Mexico. Tens of thousands per month walk right on through and stay as long as they like, no problem.

Be certain to visit Juarez on your way through. Say hello to the friendly boys down there, and take lots of video and pictures. Lol.

Shhhssss, it's a secrete, don't say out loud or the ' refugees' will now go to Mexico and enter the US from there....

not that Obama will do anything about it...

    Say, the more the merrier!
