gomangosteen, thanks for the very helpful info. Are there maybe houses for rent behind the beach, maybe a couple of blocks away or so, do you think?
When is peak season? We are thinking of going beginning of Sept for 30 days or so.

I agree with other posters, 100 baht?? My god man.... You are in the wrong country if you deem 100 baht as a hefty fare.
I thought it was a misprint or something, but 100 baht, that's like $3.00 Canadian.

Some confusion here, I see.
First, these people are not police, but immigration officers. They drive you directly to the IDC.
Second, in my case, I told them I had my passport at the hotel, but they did not care/or did not have time to pick it up.
When I could not provide a copy or the original, they did one more check. Called my name in. But that gave noe answer, so I was arrested.
In the car, I asked the officer if this is the way they catch overstayers now, he said yes. That is no hearsay, but a confirmed fact.
They were not targeting me, but I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
And random it was. They take this trip almost every day, to different places, rounding up farangs. This is no story that is made up.
And last, if you are brought in, they will check you out before the end of the day. If you have a valid visa, you are released, no fine, and does not have to stand before a judge. Two of the people brought in that day, was released the same evening.
This is kind of spooky really. Makes me have second thoughts again about my planned vacation there.

Thanks for giving me those tips everyone. My Wife (Thai) also suggested to just go there and drive around as she thought the internet prices were too high
as well. That is just what we are going to do then, thanks again.

Anyone know how much a beach hut on Chao Lao beach with a little kitchen would cost for a month?
Any recommendations as to how to go about it?

Hi. Good to know September is generally ok. 1014km sounds like a lot of cycling to me, but good for you if you can do it!
Jelly fish are not really a problem as we like to hang around the beach but not really swim. Besides, it's fun to see all
the jelly fish I think. Reminds me of when I was young back home.
A quiet beach was what we were hoping for so that's ok. The only thing I think we will need I guess is a car as I don't see
any supermarkets or markets around there at all. I just see a little mini market, but looks like all packaged junk food
which won't help much.
How possible do you think it would be if we just show up and then try and make a deal with someone to rent two
houses near the beach for a month? Lots to rent or does it look limited there in general?
