  1. I thought Kratom leaves were going to be removed from the banned narcotics list: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/672087-kratom-to-be-removed-from-thai-narcotics-list/#entry6884991

N.B. Right click the link and choose to open in a new tab or window otherwise it'll close this page and redirect you to the other post.

Not so long as some poor bast4rds are subject to having had to pay up for getting out of being prosecuted for it. Kratom? Pfft. Meanwhile, every man and his dog are on the take from ya baa distribution.

  2. The reason for so little philanthropy in SE Asia per se is that those fabulously wealthy would rather spend it on another new temple construction (read Burmese Days, for instance) to ensure a better afterlife/reincarnation. Gifting to those less fortunate simply doesn't compute. A temple is, in their view, a direct connection. Much like an ATM other than actually having to deal with a bank teller.

  3. is it possible that certain large financial holdings in Thailand are being used for money laundering

The Temples Wat's and their financials seem to be a big black hole that are neither scrutinised or transparent - no charity, bank, business, individual, organisation, temple, government office, local authority in Thailand should be beyond fiscal scrutiny or above the law

Now tell me your are Monk

How can you say what you say I bet you do not any religions groups?

Since you never go to Church why would like Buddhism

    I pray for your soul

  4. He makes a lot of promises does the dear one, he really does talk a good game.

Sadly, nearly a year into his tenure and nothing has changed. (aside from a pogrom against his political opponents which has divided the country further.)

Quite so. As my Thai driver says 'kao poot maak'. Rough translation, talks a lot but does bugg3r all.

  5. Start from mr. Colin Vard case wheres he had 7 properties stolen by police lawyers, banks, and many attempts on his and his kids lifes.

reference Andrew Drummond page (link not allowed)

This case is horrific, just shows this country is lawless. Its scary....

His 15 years old daughter makes good good job on fb https://www.facebook.com/JusticeForJessieThailand

I read this girl's FB link and do feel sorry for her and her brother, but seriously? I believe she should aim a larger portion of her ire toward her 'millionaire father' (as posted in the link to Drummond's site) and his moving some young woman from Roi Et 'shortly after arriving in Thailand' into his 28 million baht 'mansion' (yes, well) just one of his six properties on Phuket, of all places. How many times have we heard this?

  6. Why would a 71 year old come to Bangkok for? If going to bars, I would bet my bottom dollar it was the Pink Pussy bar or equivalent. If he wanted a drink, he'd go down the local pub in Oz. It's not for any of us to judge if it is right or wrong for someone that age to go after young bargirls but I certainly hope I'll not be doing the Bangkok bar thing when I'm in my twilight years. Apologies if he came to Bangkok to play in a bar's dominoes league.

Well you appear to be in the minority of posters here seeing nothing untoward with someone wanting to spend their 'twilight years' getting rat4rsed and spending their old age pensions on up country farm girls a quarter or more their age. But to be expected on this forum.

  7. if they did bring in unemployment benefits....The rate of unemployed would instantly rise to 100% unemployed.

Considering the pension here is just 500 baht per month, just how much do you think any government's generosity to the unemployed would rate? And would it persuade anyone capable of earning their own living, to get down to the local Unemployment Exchange. I'm guessing it wouldn't be worth the price of the gasoline used to take them there.

I am aware (and have pointed out to various workmen who have complained about the measly pension here) that many in Thailand, particularly the overwhelmingly self employed, pay no tax. However. Given how it is routinely salted away by whomsoever's snout is in the trough, (given which soever administration), I'd be loath to pay it too if I were one of the small shopkeepers', for instance, who do indeed pay tax and resent where it very often ends up.

  8. The evils of alcohol.

I think it's the hospital's fault for admitting him without checking if he had insurance.

Once in a drunken previous life they wheeled me out in pyjamas to the ATM to get cash out. That was Nontavej Hospital in Nontaburi.

Exactly. That's the very first thing they do. If no insurance, it's off to the nearest knackers' yard for you. So why didn't they this time? Chancing their collective arm? Which does in no way detract from the fact this old guy's an idiot.

  9. any of us can have accidents when we least expect it.yes he should have had medical cover but did n't,now his daughter is left to pick up the pieces, very inconsiderate of dad!

Lets hope for the daughter's sake there are still generous and compassionate people left in australia with a good bank balance.

She should just bloody leave him there. And why should those who have presumably worked for their 'good bank balance' feel they have to shell out for the consequences of this silly old man's actions. I could think of a thousand ways my 'charity' would be far better spent.

  10. What's a 71 year old man doing travelling alone here to Thailand? Rhetorical question. Particularly when you consider the silly old fool 'fell when exiting a bar'. Som nom na, as they say hereabouts.

    Life stops when we die.

Up to then, everybody has the right to enjoy his life.

Yes, he should have insurance but it's very wrong of you criticizing him just because he wanted to enjoy the last years of his life.

Probably you are still young, but when you come to our age you will be looking at life from a different angle.

    1. No, it doesn't.

    2. If that's the way he found to 'enjoy' himself, again, som nom na.

    3. No, I most certainly don't.

  11. Anything deemed to be inappropriate, whether legal or just overlooked in the law, should be avoided in politics. Politicians need to be seen to be ethical and abiding by all laws or they will not be trusted.

In the English language the word nepotism has a very negative connotation. The only word I could find in the Thai language is "คติเห็นแก่ญาติ" which means something like "a way or a principle or model of thinking about relatives", which I'm willing to bet does not necessarily carry as much negative connotation to it as in the west, though I do not know this as a fact, but according to these news reports it sure sounds like "nepotism" is a very negative concept in Thailand as well.

These politicians just don't get it. They are too thick-headed and they feel entitled.

The Thais wouldn't have the same derogatory attitude towards nepotism as in the West as their culture is 'family' oriented. This is why so many ordinary Thais would rather have their family work for them and 'adopt' inter family. They simply don't trust anyone outside their bloodline.

  12. It is a double-edged sword but one of the major reasons health costs are low in Thailand is because lawyers are kept out of medical malpractice claims which, in turn, keeps the doctor's liability insurance low. 240,000 Baht for being disabled through medical malpractice is not realistic, though. I hope they set this fund up and pay out more reasonable amounts for medical errors.

Not necessarily. They could follow the UK model and not accept vexatious litigants as readily as they do in the US.

  13. Rule Number 1: Never ever take 'advice' from slimy b4st4rds in suits.

Nonsense. I've been living here for over a decade spending over a million baht per year and my net worth is the same as when I came - all thanks to my Financial Adviser (who wears very nice suits).

It's up to you to check out your advisor.

I agree with your core point but "been living here for over a decade spending over a million baht per year and my net worth is the same as when I came" is meaningless without knowing your net worth. Could be a very good rate of return or could be a poor return.

It's not meant to indicate my rate of return, otherwise I may as well show you my yearly valuations. biggrin.png

But the main point is that there are very professional financial advisers who take good care of your money because the more it makes, the more they make.
