  1. I see a few liberals here whining on about how cruel this is and yet not one of them giving a shit about the poor families whose lives are destroyed by drug dealers.

Joko Widodo has it right ... execute them and send a clear message. Still if you're a greedy moron who doesn't care about destroying the lives of others and is willing to try smuggling drugs go right ahead and hopefully you too will me caught and executed.

Joko Widodo is doing the world a favor and I for one applaud him.

I suspect that you are in minority and I applaud that.

    Capital punishment does not work.

The only thing that works is catching people.

State sanctioned executions just brutalise everyone. Do you understand that?

The more executions the more people are de-sensitised and the more murders occur.

I can give some leeway as Indonesia is developing and have an immature civilisation (look at the way they torture animals there....)

My nephew died of a an overdose.

Do I want the people executed.

No, but I would like them caught.

Drugs are a complex problem. I don't have all the answers.....

I tell you what though, if you got rid of all the people who take ice, cocaine, heroin and the rest from Phuket it would be a MUCH nicer place.........

And what do you do with them once they are caught? Have people like me spend our tax dollars on supporting them for the rest of their lives? Are there not more constructive uses for tax dollars?

I would agree to keeping them in the penal system if all the bleeding hearts would allow the punishment in some form of labor etc that benefits mankind, but not to have them sit in a cell with their color TV and hunger strikes.

It is my opinion that the penal system needs the overhaul, then the sentencing system can be revised.

    Deary me!

    How depressing........

    I will not bother replying.

  2. Joking apart, I find it VERY difficult to obtain scientific facts on several of these issues.

I have type 2 diabetes brought on in part by drinking excessive quantities of full sugar Sprite when on a construction project.

Don't know the precise mechanism but that was the root cause.

I try to minimise blood sugar and try to eat and drink sensibly.

However, I can not get hold of real facts about the suitability or otherwise on a whole host of artificial sweetners

If i find Diet Coke has been harming me I shall be off to Atlanta with my wooden leg to beat them about the head and body......

There have been studies suggesting that aspartame & sucralose might have longterm effects such as brain tumours or leukemia. There also have been studues refuting that. While drinking water would be better still, it would seem that for a diabetic it would be an easy choice to take the longterm risk of consuming the artificial sweeteners instead of taking the immediate risk of having a seizure from consuming sugar.

    OK Thanks!

Now where's that bottle of Famous Grouse!

  5. Why don't vendors use natural sugars? I'm referring to vendors on all levels, from corporate towers in NYC to the fruit vendor on the sidewalk.

If the US, a person can find natural unadulterated fresh fruit juice in some places. In Thailand, near impossible. Thais can't fix food unless it's adulterated with salt, sugar, and a slew of herbs. All the fruit juices one finds in stores have been flash-heated to kill bacteria/fungi/viruses - so their nutritional value plummets.

When a person thinks of Thailand in relation to fresh fruits, one usually thinks of a plethora of colorful and tasty selections. However, Thais don't eat much fruit, particularly compared to rice and meat. Perhaps 1:200 ratio. Yet, even with the large variety of fruits in Thailand, when has anyone seen fresh-squeezed fruit juice (without sugar or salt added) available for sale? Almost unheard of. One main reason: corporations have become so successful at peddling their brands - which have big bright pictures of fruit on the labels, but are mostly water, sugar, artificial coloring, artificial flavoring, and corn syrup. If I still had little kids, I would adamant about keeping them clear from fattening, teeth destroying, health-debilitating drinks which are available everywhere in the US and Thailand. Come on people, vote with your pocketbooks. If you're an adult and choose to drink the corporate crap, that's your choice (though my tax dollars will probably be contributing to your health bills when you get too sickly and fat to function). .....but give the younger generation a break. Don't buy them sugar-laden health-destroying drinks! It's better to get a little frown ("oh, come on daddy, buy me the cola drink!"), then to wind up with 330 pound sickly offspring - 20 years hence.

Just got off a Bangkok Air flight.

Hostie comes around offering fruit juice? Does it contain sugar says I

    Of course comes the reply

On inspection Malee catering orange juice contains, wait for it ........20% orange juice.

    What else?

My money would be on corn syrup and tartrazine for starters....

Other things is, why can we not get slim line tonic here?

Ah well, back to the beer Singh........

  6. Aspartame breaks down to wood alcohol causing blindness and cancer. Its made using the Recombinant DNA process i.e. the sh*t from bacteria. I am no fan of sugar but honestly you'd be better of with plain sugar rather than the artificial sweetners.

At least sugar breaks down into Glucose and Fructose - the Glucose is OK, but the bad bit is the fructose that gets turned into VLDL (very low density lipoprotein). Check out the YT video "Sugar the Bitter Truth".

If you're going to go down the chemistry illiteracy rathole, you should also warn people that surcalose has three highly toxic chlorine molecules (the same as the mustard gas used in WW1) synthetically linked to each sucrose molecule. And water, that's the worst of them all, with highly explosive hydrogen atoms (same as used in the Hindenburg) bonded directly to highly flammable oxygen.

    Haha! Great stuff!

  7. These damn bikers are a bloody nuisance anyway

All those helmets and Totenkopf insignia?

And the noise! What's that about? Look at me? Aren't I grand in my leather outfit?

Yes the notorious Molotov / Ribbontrop pact split Poland and left the Poles to probably the worst fate in the last war.

Sure, the Russians did a magnificent job in their "Patriotic War" to drive the Germans all the way back from the gates of Moscow and got to Berlin first.

    I know they lost 27M!

But they have still not given half of Poland back.

(The Poles were given a big chunk of Eastern Germany in compensation but were otherwise betrayed in a shameful carve up by Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill)

Not surprised at their attitude now..............

  8. Poisoning the people!

    Poisoning the people!

...the business of ALL big food corporations coffee1.gif

So, do you never eat anything made by "big food corporations"? Why would you if you think they're in the business of "poisoning the people."

BTW, for the past 40 years it's been extremely rare for me to consume any foods produced by "big food." It's been 40 years since I drank a Coke, Pepsi or the like ... or eaten in McDonald's, KFC, etc. During that time approx. 95% of my food has been organically cultivated, mostly vegetarian with lots and lots of fresh veggies and fruits, unrefined whole grains, zero white sugar, and very moderate alcohol consumption.

That lifestyle is the best investment I ever made and after 40 years (I'm now 70) it's paying off very well in health dividends.

Have you enjoyed life ? Really? Fancy a pint?

  9. None who engage in such an act shall receive any sympathy from me.

As I've stated before there is sufficient evidence to suggest the death penalty is NOT a deterrent; however what it does achieve is to ensure those undertaking such a crime are never able to commit it again.

Why should the taxpayer have to pick up the tab for keeping these people in prison for life? For those of you who oppose the death penalty you might want to consider not the plight of those on death row but the poor families that have been destroyed by those supplying drugs.

Glad to hear that you understand that it is not a deterrent

What you're saying is that it's a cost saving measure

Any others you would euthenase as a cost saving measure? How about the mentally ill?

You see civilised societies reject capital punishment because it desensitises the population. States that have capital punishment usually have much higher murder rates

I have no sympathies with drug dealers. My nephew died of an overdose. However, I don't think it's a good idea to put people to death.

  10. Pot meet kettle. Which country doesn't have skeletons in its closet? None of us was alive to do those things.

Germany accusing another country of genocide, and wanting to stir the pot. How quaint.

Please place the statement in context. Also note that for the first time, a German high official has acknowledged the role that Germany played in the Armenian genocide. Germany for a long time didn't want to address the issue.

I would argue that the Germans aged 50 and under who have taken on their past genocidal history allowed one of the remaining German taboos to be dealt with. The Germany of today is essentially a different country than 50 years ago, and even 25 years ago. Although the absorption of the backward east disrupted social progress for awhile, Germany has attained the higher moral ground now when it comes to human rights issues because of its willingness to critically examine its past. It was a difficult exercise, but getting rid of those skeletons has made Germany stronger. Look at the change in attitudes even a recent generation has made: Previously the prosecutors didn't want to go after WWII junior concentration camp guards. Well, now, the younger generation has spoken and they said get them, and we now have the accountant of Auschwitz finally facing justice. I honestly believe that Germany is returning to its rightful role that it occupied in the late 1800's as a force of enlightenment and a land of integrity.

Yes, I absolutely second all that. Well said!

Incidentally, one reason why the worst of the Nazi criminals were not prosecuted ruthlessly after the war was the apparant need to hold back Russian influence.

Without any sense of irony, Germany is one of the most civilised and peaceful societies I know

  11. BTW, I think it highly unlikely that we would ask you for help. You probably would not come unless victory was assured and you can share the spoils!

That, sir, is a slap in the face to my father who landed at D-Day after Churchill asked for help. My father suffered for many decades from wounds he received when a machine gun blew up in his hands. Well how did I know that Britbash 101, Thx, Point Made

@%$ you and the horse you rode in on.
I did not mean to insult any individual. I apologise for the offence caused. I'm sure your father and many others were brave men fighting for their country.

I did not bring up the issue.

What I was trying to convey was my opinion that many people are dismayed at the apparant barbarity displayed by so many (but not all) Americans.

Again, sorry for the offence caused
. So Many, But Not All, What a Pathetic Statement, 1/2 Deck is all I can say, Hey Mr. Peace , where u from??? I Need To Know

I really fail to understand your point.

A majority of Americans I come across these days seem to be very right wing with views straight of Fox News. I find capital punishment barbaric and I am genuinely dismayed that so many Americans seem to applaud it!

That's not all Americans but a very clear majority.

Maybe that's because I do not know so many these days or because web boards attract a certain type?

Why is that pathetic? At least it has stimulated some debate

I am British since you ask
. I mean who watches Fox News in America, a bunch of yahoos that don't know better, the Bible Belt Crowd, I'm from California and we don't think that way, maybe the ignorant rural areas, I worked to stop the war in Vietnam, 500,000 Strong in the Polo Fields and Marching down Geary in San Francisco....
Pathetic are the Statements you make, I'm definitely not Stimulated, as a matter of fact I'm feeling a lil Barbaric at the moment, but that's why there called Trolls...

"Some of these scum need to suffer"? That doesn't sound very Haight Ashbury to me!

I had no intention of upsetting you and it gives me no pleasure

I just find executions to be barbaric in the 21st century

    Ok?

    Cup of tea?

  13. This topic is about gassing people to death.

My views on this are robust it's a polemic if you like

I find a large proportion of Americans hold quite barbaric views. I am frankly dismayed.

If that makes me a troll, so be it!

You see I am old enough to remember when the USA was the country to aspire to. The crystal peak that set an example to the world.

    I'll get my coat.....

  14. Unbelievable!

I assume the majority of the contributors are American if not all?

    How barbaric you are!

Did you not read the thread pointing out that the death penalty just does not work?

I for one am quite terrified of America being the world's policeman, when their own police force is so inadequate and so many Americans seem to be psychopathic? Christians? My arse!

. Let's get all the American Bashers together Now, and look at the Scum other countries have let in and taken over their countries, England , France, Don't Come Crying for Help, When your Country Implodes on your Liberal Policies of Democracy, I hate The Police, Land of the Free Bullshit, but times have changed, Fire with Fire....
Oh dear, you seem quite sensitive about that!

What has European immigration policy got to do with the price of cheese?

Don't forget the USA was built on immigration.

    Anyway, off topic.

I still feel that for such a powerful, wealthy country you do seem to have an inadequate police force and a population that seems to Others to be particularly barbaric.

I would have thought you could have come up with better solutions by now!

BTW, I think it highly unlikely that we would ask you for help. You probably would not come unless victory was assured and you can share the spoils!

Not really anti-american, more disappointed I suppose. Lived there on three separate occasions and the people I met were great!

. I wish I knew what country your from, I would go back to the U.S. And Protest Helping your Country, We Yanks Don't Forget...
