  1. If you have any doubts as to having ground attached to something useful multi meters are very cheap these days and can be quite useful for battery testing in daily use.  Lotus and other stores will have them in wall packs in the hardware section.

Use highest AC voltage setting (some will have a switch to select AC/DC as well as range for various type tests) and carefully put leads into socket - should read about 230v across hot/neutral and the same from the hot side to ground.  If you get zero or a lower reading from hot side to ground it is not a good connection or not a good ground.  If you are all thumbs have someone else do it; but as long as you are careful it is not very dangerous.

A very bad practice here is to sell outlet strips that appear to have a ground but in fact do not.  Key is to look for a three prong plug when you buy (probably with an adapter to two pins included).  Buy that type and get rid of the adapter.

hi lopburi, the only prob is the rccd trips when u do that!(unless u bypass it)

  2. hi crossy, when you say that the earth wire is connected to an iron water pipe--does this pipe go underground?or is it within the flat?

in other words,is it the main water supply pipe coming into your flat?or is the main water supply pipe made of plastic?if it is ,then the connecting of an earth wire to any metal pipes within the flat would be usless and very dangerous

you must get an earth stake/rod and hammer it into the ground ,then use that as your main earthing point,(not so easy in a condo!)

but if the iron pipe you refer to is the main suppy pipe and goes underground with no plastic pipe joined in between, it is probably ok to use for earthing, as any fault current can be conducted away into the ground thus tripping the circuit breaker on the faulty circuit cheers-- andy (approved electrician 16th ed )

  3. I have a thai girlfriend.. I have been reading quite a lot here, there is too many options how to do it (through a company, etc.) but what about places and prices for example close to beaches or...?

If we marry and have children... how to protect my investments if the relationship is over?

    thanks!

if you live in los with a thai g/f/ wife and it goes tits up, you lose everything ,

get everything on a mortgage then she cant boot you out ,as she wont be able to pay the payments on her own

  4. As seen on the main page, a bike hike in visa fee's and minimum wages for foreigners living and working here. The visa fee's will be effective from August 26 and the new minimum wages must be upheld before July 1 next year. Since Thai Rak Thai (Thai Love Thai) government got the power two years ago they are slowly making it more and more difficult for foreigners to live here, they add new taxes, rules and requirement all the time--(c/p from another forum)

is it true that the thai goverment is gradually making it more and more difficult for farangs to survive in los?

  5. hi jockstar, here in the uk the colours have recently changed! instead of red yellow blue , its now black grey and brown for 3 phase . confusing or what!!

    Since when?

hi jockstar my computers been down,so im late repying, the new colours came into use last year about decembertime, its meant to match the colours in europe

even the pvc insulation that the cables use are now toxic free and non-flammable!

  6. I've heard a falong cannot own land, a house, etc.  If you are an American with Treaty of Amity status, can you own it through your corporation?

    Thanks.

a farang cannot normally own land but can get a 30 year lease on it extendable,

a farang can own a house no problem, just not the land its built on

the only way to actually own some land, is to invest a shed load of bhat in thailand, then you can buy a small piece of land, freehold apparently(all sounds well dodgy to me!)

      QUOTE(booma @ 2005-03-17 02:03:03)

The BBC has just broadcast an item saying 'Scientists researching the earthquake that caused the Asian Tsunami, have reported that there is a high chance of another quake'

This was just popped in at the end of the bulletin.

I'll try and find the link!

These "Scientists" are from an "Irish" university so think what you will!!

    MonsieurHappy,

I think that you are a petty minded "gobshite",

  8. at least with a stake , the sub-breaker will /should trip if a fault occurs on a circuit

( providing the stake resistance is low enough to allow enough fault current to flow to earth that is!)

And when the current gets to the earth stake, where exactly does it go to complete it's loop ??

All current flows in a loop (except lightning which is a charge transfer or discharge)

Mythology can be very comforting and it can be very dangerous.

Take the time and trouble to make sure the ECLB is working ! !

hi paulfr,i didnt understand the bit about mythology,as for the question about the earth stake, the current makes its way back to the main earth stake at the power station, as does all fault current
  9. hi lopburi3,ive found a few faulty elcb,s in the past, here in the uk,

when tested with the correct equipment, some havent tripped at the correct ma/time rating, and some, not at all ! ,thats why its important to have an earth stake ,as a back-up

here in the uk,sometimes the earth is connected to the neutral ,instead of using a stake, so the neutral and the earth are as one-- its called PME(phase multiple earthing )

at least with a stake , the sub-breaker will /should trip if a fault occurs on a circuit

( providing the stake resistance is low enough to allow enough fault current to flow to earth that is!)

btw,i dont like the idea of a bypass switch on the safe-t cutout! !whats the point of having an elcb that you can bypass! that would be a big no-no in the uk !

  10. Hi,

I have asked my builder to use a safety cut in my electrical wiring.

He proposed 'Consummer' a brand that does the same job according to him and which is integrated with the 'breaker' making it a neat box into one

Anyboday have any specifics of thst system and/or any comparison to safetycut ?

    Thanks

hi krub, your builder probably means a "consumer unit"-this is what the unit it called here in the uk,

its a metal or plastic enclosure with a main switch and about 6 separate circuit breakers within

the main switch has a built in safety trip with a test button to test it occasionally

the main switch should have a trip rating no more than 30 ma(milli-amps) also an earth rod 1 metre long, should be installed with a 10mm wire attached to it, and the other end of the wire connected to the earth bar inside the consumer unit ,and all appliances and extranious metalwork inside the house earthed back to the earth bar in the consumer unit--this is VERY important! ps try to get the builder/electrician to position the consumer unit in a cupboard ,out of sight ,they always seem to fit it on the wall in the hall way,!!

  11. I'm looking to get some building work done on a house in Koh Samui.  I want to support the local economy as much as possible and so would like to employ Thai builders, rather than a 'western' firm I have the details of.  However, I'm not sure of the etiquette and don't want to get it wrong.

If I was doing a similar thing in the UK I'd get two or three quotes, speak to other customers, and then go with the option I thought best.  Is this the best way to do it in Thailand too?  I'm not sure if getting more than one quote might be seen as insulting, or if you're supposed to haggle, etc, etc.  Any help/advice will be appreciated.

Getting several bids on a project is normal business in Thailand too.

Not seen as insulting in the least.

    Good luck with your project.

i read a post somewhere about a guy who was having a house extension built by thai builder, they laid the floor tiles ,then started to build the walls

all the muck was piling up on the new floor, and each night they shoveled it up,

the house owner asked the builder to lay some ply-board down,to cover/protect the floor, the thai builder and his men, didnt like being told what to do, left in a temper, never to be seen again--

  12. Listen to Mattnich's advise.

    He is absolutely correct.

    Some appliances will not run.

Not sure about a computer thou,  how does a UPS work ?

hi thetym, a ups or "uninterruptable power supply"is an electronic unit that has an inverter and rechargable batterys inside ,it is on all the time ,and "accompanys" the main electrical supply

if there is a power outage the ups carrys on the supply as if nothing had happened

they are mostly used for essential equipment like the tills in supermarkets /computers/,cash machines (atm,s) etc

  13. Check out banlaesuan magazine (too bad they don't have an english version, I love this magazine), there is usually one business in there who advertises these. They look like a round stainless tank with a solar panel attached. We were quoted one here for 35,000 baht.

    SBK

Sorry, other topic. Did you see some solar panels in Thailand to produce electricity.

hi these panels are called "photo-VOLTaic cells" they are individual panels all linked together

each one produces about 1.5 volts providing the sun is shining on them, whan a whole lot are linked-electrically together, the "array"usually produces 24volts,this is ok for lights and anything that can run on 24volts (tv /radio,but not any big appliances eg:aircon or anything that needs a lot of power

there is normally2 or more batterys to store the electricity, so that you can use it at night pvcells only have limited use in a small installation.

if you were to link lots of p /v /cells together and get a shed load of batterys

you could then get an "inverter" this will turn a low voltage into a high voltage eg:24v into 110 or240 volts

but the system will cost lots of bht! but with a big enough system you could run a house on it ,but it depends on how sunny it is!!(one guy in los uses fork lift truck batterys and an inverter very successfully)

  14. CS spray is dangerous in the wrong hands.....and that means anyone who is not trained in the use and deployment of the spray.  I was trained in the use of CS spray or OC spray as we use here as part of my job training and we have refesher courses to ensure that we can use it effectively and safely.

Trust me it is not a matter of just picking it up and depressing the plunger...

i agree, especially if your pointing the nozzle towards you :o
  15. hi girlx its me again, your pains may be due to stress ,my friend had the same thing after his wife left him ,he lost a stone a week and became extremely ill with pain in his joints as well,

get out of that stressful situation !!

  16. try taking cod liver oil ,it tastes and smells awful, but it works wonders on the joints.

    after about 3-4 weeks use.

dont take too much as it will go "straight through "! it tastes better if you mix it with milk ,you have to persevere with it before you get results!

  17. in the uk we have one phase and one neutral or ground(same thing, the earth is connected to the neutral)

if you touch the phase you get 240 volt shock if you touch the neutral you feel nothing ,i think the same goes for thailand too---also i thoght that the water pipes under the ground in thailand were made of plastic? and therefore cannot be used as an electrical earth

  18. they had a dog cull in Bangkok a couple of years back, they were spose to shoot them, but the price of bullets was too much ,so they bludgeoned them with sticks with nails in instead
