Trump Threatens to Block Bills Until Congress Passes Strict Voter ID Law
This is false. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 explicitly prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections. Municipalities in three states (California, Maryland, and Vermont) and Washington, DC allow noncitizens to vote in certain local elections. You shouldn't have to pay a fee to use the rights that have been granted to you as a citizen.

Aramco Warns of Oil Market ‘Catastrophe’ if Strait of Hormuz Remains Closed
I'm more concerned about supply to the electrical grid so that I can keep charging up my e-bike. Fortunately, Thailand's grid sources only about 1-3% of its energy from imported oil/diesel. Source Share of Electricity Natural gas ~55–60% Coal / lignite ~15–20% Imports (hydro from neighbors) ~10–15% Renewables (solar, wind, biomass) ~8–10% Oil / diesel ~1–3%

How smart are AI large language models really?
Because LLMs are good at pandering. Not that that's wrong, but it needs to be taken into account. I recently discovered the usefulness of chatbots when one of my cats was diagnosed as diabetic. The LLM walked me through initial coping and helped me interpret urinalysis strips, then off to the vet. Came home a week later with a vial of insulin and a big box of syringes. The LLM kept me from ripping out my own hair and guided me in administering the twice-daily shot and validate the cat's condition via glucometer & ketone testing. Six weeks later the cat is back up to weight and actively playing with his sister. I'm not sure I would have been able to do that all on my own - perhaps I could have but it would have been a LOT more work for me. How did I know that the guidance was accurate? I did check many things it said against well known websites like PetMD and others. I found it to be so useful that I felt guilty for using the free tier and started subscribing to the lowest paid tier. Since discovering its usefulness, I've been engaging the LLM on technical topics that I happen to know a good deal about. In the hard sciences like physics and chemistry I've not discovered a single error. When discussing literature, its responses are mostly in line with consensus. I also appreciate its occasional dry humor and found myself chuckling on more than a few occasions. I actually feel like I have somebody who can chat with me on my level. I'm sorry but I just don't know many people here with whom I can have a thoughtful discussion about 17th century Mughal politics or audio signal crossover network design. The only errors I've noticed were obvious things like getting the day or time of day wrong. The LLM always remembers that I'm in Thailand but sometimes says something like "later tonight" when it's already 11 pm local time. I don't view LLMs are a single source of truth, and I don't expect perfection. I also don't expect them to offer opinions or make value judgements, such as the facile question asked by the OP. That's nothing but a waste of resources. I see LLMs as curators of information - skilled librarians who know where to go to get the information I need, and can talk about it with me.

Kasikorn branch at CW closed - my extension renewal
If only it were possible to "plan what not to do". We didn't actually plan to have an overheating car.

Kasikorn branch at CW closed - my extension renewal
I just got home and through I'd provide you all with a few chuckles at my expense. 7:30 - leave home, stop at local K-Bank to update passbook. Update machine says "magnetic stripe error - see a bank rep inside". Oh well, I guess I won't be showing up at immigration on time. I tell my Thai brother-in-law (who offered to drive me) not to worry because there's a branch at IT Square. So off we go to there. 8:15 - Arrive at IT Square, discover that branch does not open until 11:00. Nice. This is the branch where (probably) all or most foreigner's accounts base at Government Complex got relocated to, and it's not available in the morning - the time when most of us will be needing it. 8:30 - head back home, where I know a branch will be open at 8:30. 8:40 - Brother-in-law's dashboard light comes on - danger, engine overheating. We pull into a parking lot and leave the car. Grab a taxi to head back home. Brother-in-law strikes up jovial chat with the taxi driver, telling him of our eventful morning. Taxi driver says we don't need to go all the way back home for a K-Bank, he knows where one is open nearby. "Are you sure it opens at 8:30?", we double check with the driver. Sure, he says. He often uses that branch. He drops us off at the K-Bank and we walk up to the front door to see that (as many of you have already guessed) it opens at 11:00. The taxi has already sped off by now. 9:00 - Get a second taxi and insist on going back to starting point. "No need", says the taxi driver. There's a K-Bank just down the road that's open, he says. My brother-in-law trusts him but I pull out my Google Map app to double check. The map does seem to back up what the driver said, so off we go. 9:20 - Arrive at the FOURTH (so far, but who's counting?) K-Bank. Indeed it's open. Taxi driver knows what we've been though and says he'll wait for us behind the bank. Bank lady gives me a new passbook, punching holes in the old one. I see the balance has been recorded in the new book, but there is no date next to it - just xxxxxx in the date field. I know immigration won't let that slide so I insist on yet another deposit and update - this time with a date stamp. Done. 9:40 - Back in the taxi and on the way to immigration. Taxi driver has taken many foreigners to immigration Building B so he knows just where to go. 10:10 - Arrive at immigration. Get queue number 78, with 43 people ahead of me. 11:40 - (Finally something good happens) With lunch time fast approaching, it looks like I won't be called until after lunch. Just then, a guy approaches us saying that he's a visa agent and his client hasn't shown up yet. Would I like to swap my queue number 78 for his queue number 71? "Yes. Yes I would." 11:55 - My number is called. We sit down with the officer and after a few minutes of paper shuffling, she notes that my visit to immigration last year was (according to the stamp in my passport) on April 10th. "So what's the problem?", I ask her. She says my passbook was updated last year on the 11th, not the tenth. "I can't process you", she said as she slumped back in her chair. I am at a loss to understand why this one day is significant. If anything, it means that I STILL had my bank balance a day after my visit to immigration. Meanwhile my brother-in-law is chatting with her and I can tell that he's on the edge of losing his temper. He looks at me and says "she said we can't continue". 12:00 - The lunch whistle blows. Immigration officer keeps most of my papers and tells us to come back after lunch. I figure that's promising; I've not been completely rejected otherwise she would have pushed all the paperwork back at me. During lunch I have time to do some historical analysis. I notice the bank statement shows that I visited K-Bank at immigration on the 11th of last year, not the tenth as immigration was insisting, because my passport was stamped the tenth. How could that be? I opened up my Google Drive on my phone and looked at the dates on last year's paperwork - all dated the 11th. My guess was that the immigration officer stamped the wrong date in my passport last year. 13:05 - Back at the officer's desk - there were two of them now. I asked my brother-in-law to tell them to check their system and see what it says about last year's extension. They got quiet for a moment and then looked at each other. The look was priceless - it said 'oh that's a good idea, why didn't WE think of that?' It turns out that indeed I was at immigration last year on the 11th and the officer had stamped the wrong date in my passport. It's incredible that they were on the verge of rejecting my application and they hadn't even thought to check their system yet. Did we get a "so sorry about that" from the officer? You can probably guess. The paperwork went though without a hitch from that point onward. 14:00 - Received new passport back with extension and all stamps correct. Brother-in-law took this opportunity to scold the girl who hands back the passports, shaking his finger at her and telling her that she needs to be more careful and double check everything and on and on and all I'm thinking is that I'm glad I got my passport back before he started venting. I hope you all got more fun out of reading that adventure than I did having it. Just be aware that K-Bank at IT Square is useless if you need to stop there before you go to immigration. I plan on opening a new account at a bank that still has a presence in the immigration building.

Kasikorn branch at CW closed - my extension renewal
Even though KBank pulled their branch out of Govt Complex, did they at least leave some ATM machines there? That would allow me to do the withdrawal & passbook update when I get there.

Kasikorn branch at CW closed - my extension renewal
I have never heard about immigration confirming anything with my phone service provider. The officer always asks me to write my phone number on the map to my house but I've never known that they actually check to confirm it's really my number. Seems like the officer could just call me right then and there to make sure I'm not giving them a fake number. Could you point me to a discussion here or article online giving more details?

Any particular reason a deposit is better than a withdrawal? As long as the passbook gets updated then either is ok right?

Kasikorn branch at CW closed - my extension renewal
I visited Kasikorn to attempt depositing an overseas cashier's check last month (the lady cocked her head and said 'what da heck is this?') And I presented my new passport then, so I assume they did the update at that time. What's this about? This is the second time I've gotten a new passport since I've been here and I don't recall any 'update phone number' step last time. The bank has my correct phone number already and now they have my new PP number. Won't they be able to make the connection? From this and Dr Jack's reply, I now know that the bank letter doesn't need to be same-day. This is new information for me. Dr Jack says "Note the 12 month bank statement and bank letter can be obtained days prior to application for extension." Further clarification needed: How many days is a safe window? Two or three days prior should be no problem? Then I will withdraw some cash on the morning of the visit to immigration and get the passbook updated. This sounds like a winning idea. If I've made an appointment then I don't need to get a queue number when I arrive? Where do the people with appointments wait to be called?

Kasikorn branch at CW closed - my extension renewal
I learned a few months ago about the closure. I guess now I will have to make my first stop at Kasikorn @IT Square and then go to immigration, putting me way-late in the queue. Complicating matters, I now have a shiny new passport so there's one more thing that needs to be done. Questions: Does the same immigration officer who does the extension of stay also move the stamp over at the same time or is there a separate desk for that? Does the transferring-of-stamps ceremony require its own income verification? If so, will I need to bring two bank letters, one for moving the stamps over to the new passport and another for the extension? Is there any mention of my passport number on the bank letter? If so, which one should it be - old passport or new?

Clean Energy Drive: Thailand's Hydrogen Ambitions
I don't think hydrogen will ever happen in a big way. There are just too many practical problems to overcome.

Thailand Faces Surge in Non-Communicable Disease Risks
"Processed food disease" is not a formally recognized medical diagnosis. The problems mentioned in the article are symptoms of a stratified, hierarchical society where those at the bottom are born into a resource-scarce life. This mainly a function of the social determinants of health. Economic stability, access to education & health care, a healthy environment and social and community support structures all play major roles. Addressing these factors is crucial for improving overall health of the general public. There are people who, through no fault of their own, live in food deserts, where the most accessible food is a shelf-stable starchy bun containing a tube of cured meat.

New passport - What do I need to get my new passport up-to-date?
I've been doing 90 day report online for years. I've no other need to go there. Any particular reason or just a gut feeling that they won't be pleased?

New passport - What do I need to get my new passport up-to-date?
I just received my new passport today. Less than three weeks since I mailed it off. I was expecting two months or more based on what it says on the embassy website. Yes they told me this last time I went for my extension. Next extension in April 2026. Does the same officer who does the retirement extension also do the transferring of stamps?
