  1. You are correct with the point that there is a lot of confusion. The Police are interpreting the law as they see fit and many bars including the Outback are taking a safe line of no smoking at the actual bar face. We are open air but the second law says that we must provide a non smoking area and a segregated smoking zone. We, like many other bars are waiting to see how the chips fall while keeping very safe. The personal fine is 2,000 baht but the bar fine is 20,000baht for allowing smoking at the bar. No bar is willing to pay that just so that a couple of guys can have a durrie.

    CB

So are you a customer at the Outback bar or one of the owners? Because you use the term "We are open air".

I am the manager - not owner

    CB

Exactly as I thought a bit of free advertising for 'your' bar in the context of the smoking topic. Other bar owners like myself would be given a 'warning' or a 'holiday' for such a stunt!

Following up on my PM and out of interest - how are you and other bar owners coping with the law?

    Indoor or outdoor?

    A/C or Open Air

    Designated smoking area and where?

    cheers

not heard of anyone getting nicked in the soi 6 area, as of yet, get odd customer complaining, but thats mainly the way staff approach the issue, but so far so good thats why im on here everyday just checking news etc, am waiting for libiya's "20 bars on soi 7 done for smoking ban law"

  3. history:

Initial entry to thailand is on tourist visa 3 months

border run twice at mae sai

    Exited for two weeks

entered thailand visa exempt 30 days

    then:

went to Vientianne april 30 - got tourist visa good for 60 days stamp until june 28

    plan:

    1. extension on june 28: another 30 days chiang mai immigration

    2. 1st border run mae sai: 30

    3. 2nd border run mae sai: 30

    4. to vientianne to get tourist visa again

    Questions:

    1. Is the above plan possible?

    2. Can one keep going back to vientianne, repeating the process over and over again? or does one have to go to another country? sorry, vientianne is the nearest.

yep, basically, as lite beer and lop recomend a tourist x2 would give you longer!

    "plan:

    1. extension on june 28: another 30 days chiang mai immigration

    2. 1st border run mae sai: 30

    3. 2nd border run mae sai: 30, you should be able to get a 3rd but stick to 2, as you say, if poss, gives a plan b if needed!

    4. to vientianne to get tourist visa again, apply for same visa double entry mark entry form x2, i belive they ask you now?

5 after your 60 days, again do your extention, then when you do your first border run, you will get 60 days again, instead of 30, then you can get another extention of 30 stright after!

then that still leaves 3 more border runs!

i tend not to leave till last day where poss, if you read on here, then check your visa, it has somthing like enter before date and i think thats what catches a lot out, then they only give you 30 days i think!

    so

    "Questions:

    1. Is the above plan possible? yes but you can get longer as posted!

    2. Can one keep going back to vientianne, repeating the process over and over again? or does one have to go to another country? sorry, vientianne is the nearest.

at the moment yes, but every time you planning on going anywhere, check on here cos in the last 2 years things have changed and vientiene at mo is very good and prob 100% but could all change!

copy this into your faveroties/ bookmarks etc on you computor, and hopefully it will keep upto date. makes good reading anyway!

back of chai chet, go back onto main road stright accross, up past supermarket some appartments up there, vc i think they were called, a mate checked them and said they cheap as chips, that was a year or so ago like.

on that road, them bars and shps etc all have live in above and they only 10,000 month

  6. ..... doesn't require an outbound air ticket not bogus bus ticket.

    ???

Do you mean it doesn't require any ticket?

just looked at that jack golf site, tropo seems ok, having said that from pattaya its got to be at least an hour further away so presumeibly thats 2 hours extra on a day when you probobly dont want to go anyway, or ban leam pay 200 bhat for ticket!

"You didn't say whether or not you show an airticket when you get your extension at Jomtien"

    no not asked again

"t might have somthing to do with, you are extending a tourist visa? and at ban leam if you are re entering on a tourist visa you dont need a onward journy ticket, yet your next visit you are a visa exempt so you do need one?

"so maybe have somthing to do with that, lopuri, maestro?"

    chris

I am not sure of your question but you do not extend a tourist visa by exit/entry. Extension can only be done at an immigration office using form TM.7 and payment of 1,900 baht. Now if you are thinking of a second tourist visa entry for 60 days - that would not normally require a ticket at the border. It is the visa exempt 30 day stamp that some places will ask to see an outbound ticket.

"I am not sure of your question" lop

    tropo asks

"You didn't say whether or not you show an airticket when you get your extension at Jomtien"

it seems some people are asked for it at jontiem, and some others (inc me) are not,

"It was reported awhile back that Jomtien Immigration were asking to see outbound tickets. They were even refusing many people who didn't have them a 30 day extension and giving them 7 days. tropo

""t might have somthing to do with, you are extending a tourist visa? and at ban leam if you are re entering on a tourist visa you dont need a onward journy ticket, yet your next visit you are a visa exempt so you do need one?

what we trying to get at is why some people get asked, and some not, for "onward journy ticket" /flight ticket etc at jontiem imig? what im asking is that is it maybe the people who have travelled on visa exempt and are applying for an extention, is it maybe them getting asked, and maybe people extending a visa it is not asked, as in that would seem to apply at the ban leam border?

    cheers

  8. i think its a law with good intentions that is not easily made to fit all establisments and i think its having the same problems around the world, im 120 a day but i well understand people should not have to have it in thier face, times are a changing and i think the best you can do is seperate different areas to the inconvience of smokers buts thats just the way it is.

if you have a clear def No smoking area, thats not hidden in a toilet, but a big main part of the premises, with a smaller smoking area clearly signed and it is bieng enforced to make it fair, when the smoking police arrive im hoping common sense and fairness should hopefully get you through!

  9. "ust wondering if I will be able to get across the border the same day, flight arrives in Udon 1715" yes from on here before it closes quite late, i would have thought 6ish but was informed about 9/10pm

  10. i think you should be fine 9th june, gives you the 10 days lite beer is on about till 19th, then when you go to immigration for your extention they will need both passports so they can transfere all your visa details etc in to new.

maybe, if you not live in bangkok, and you have to travel there, maybe hand it in 9th as you say 10 days later 19th it is ready maybe phone em and arrange to pick it back up tue 1st then nip to imigration then if they cant add the extra days you only lose a few, and all bangkok passport, transferring details and extentions over and done in a day then!

  11. "Which words in my first post (no. 2) did you not understand. I did alot of research back in January, and that's pretty much as concise as it gets. If some of the words were too long for you then let me know, and I will try and break them down."

ha ha ha ha, go back to bed, and get up out of otherside!!!

however, bang on right and Nobody knows the rules, from memory feb 11th was the start date given by health ministry or whatever and police said they would enforce it from feb 10th?? :o

  12. "Further to my previous post." not seen it!

"My tourist visa expires on 5 July" are you here in thailand now or elsewhere?

"f I get 30 days to Aug 4 and then go to the embassy to renew this would give me more leeway on getting a new passport as my pasport expires Dec 30"

i know im thick but this sounds to me like you want to extend your visa at the same embassy that will give you a new passport?

fozzy, i and others will try help you, tell the full story if here, when ya arrived, where now, have ya been before if so when, etc etc not bin funny but i cant understand your post, (not started drinking yet)

    chris

  13. yep, hull sounds ya best one, ive never been but im told its very user friendly in and out 30 mins or you can post it (passport) norm 3/4 working days its back!

    http://www.thaiconsul-uk.com/

just looked at japans website, http://www.thaiembassy.jp/rte2/content/view/88/142/

dont know why i was looking to be honest, dont think they gonna write on web "we cant be bothered doing visas, so go elsewhere"!!!

but anyway ya could email em, but if you have time as lop says hull, now i dont know how much they are i think about 100 quid for a year one so if ya get a smaller one maybe cheaper say 60 quid (no idea) you might be as well to pay a bit more then ya covered for next years holiday maybe?

  14. On June 3, 2008, a number of Pattaya police officers attempted to calm down a drunken American who purported to be an ex-GI, who was in the process of beating himself on the head with a beer bottle in Sa-gnuen-Chai Beer Bar. He had been dumped by a Thai girl and was heart-broken. The man caused himself severe head wounds with blood streaming down all over his face and body.

At 4am on June 3, Pol.Lt.Col. Sompol Nak-kamphan, Pattaya Investigator, was notified by a staff member of Sa-gnuen-Chai Beer Bar, located in front of Soi 10, Pattaya 2nd Road, about the drunken antics of the supposed ex-GI and sent an investigative team.

At the scene, police officers found the American (30), his head wound bleeding profusely, with tattoos all over his body, wearing a black T-shirt and military camouflage trousers. The man was very intoxicated, insulting everyone who came near him and refusing help. The staff members of the bar told officers that the man was a regular customer, but today he had had a lot to drink and was apparently out of control. The man told the officers that he had been jilted by his Thai girlfriend and did not want to go back home after closing time. The staff told him that they were going to close the bar, but the drunken man ignored their pleas and started to hit himself with the beer bottle and hurt himself severely.

Police officers tried to calm him down in order to take the drunken man to the hospital for treatment, but he resisted and swore at the officers in Thai. Additionally, he kept repeated that he had been in the front line for 6 years during the Vietnam War, (a total impossibility, considering his age) :o and he wanted to be left alone.

  15. hey up tropo, how ya doin mate, from memory you went a very similar time to me no? how you goiing with your time table, still on scheduleish?

hey youve put some input into this thread, you must do about as much work in life as me, nil :o

    catch ya soon mate

    chris

I'm on a similar schedue to you, just a month behind. Later this month I'll be after my last 30 day extension and then I plan to do a visa exempt run and a trip back to the Philippines so I won't be hitting Vietiane again until about September/October. I hope it stays good.

I have a question for you Chris. How did you go on your last 30 day extension down at the Jomtien Immigration office? Did they insist on seeing an air ticket out? I got a feeling from my last visit there in March they were getting a little tougher - even asking for telephone numbers to be written on the application form. My address is not a hotel, but they asked me the name.

sounds like you going visiting your lass's family? my visits to imigration have been fine, i have read on here of problems, but never had any myselfe, if you do whowever have problems i think there is help to be found in the coffe shop!

it might have somthing to do with, you are extending a tourist visa? and at ban leam if you are re entering on a tourist visa you dont need a onward journy ticket, yet your next visit you are a visa exempt so you do need one?

so maybe have somthing to do with that, lopuri maestro?

  16. i think gas is ref, how hot it is in the que, whilst waiting, go early but then again on here there have been big ques early, so be prepared!

    chris

There's also been a number of reports about people arriving late (after 10am) going straight through. I may try that next time as I intend to stay for an extra day anyway so if it's a problem I'll still be able to apply the next day.

hey up tropo, how ya doin mate, from memory you went a very similar time to me no? how you goiing with your time table, still on scheduleish?

hey youve put some input into this thread, you must do about as much work in life as me, nil :o

  17. at Vientiene do they ask for bank statement to get tourist visa?? i am a little bit worry about this....

i was told i might have to show one on my first trip to vientiene, so i took my bank book, having said that i have never been asked and to my knowledge on here anyway certainly in last 6 months as lite beer says big no, but if you have one, take one, its not heavy!

"No - the only question is usually the blee@ing obvious..."are you hot?". As you stand in a puddle of your own persperation melting away"

i think gas is ref, how hot it is in the que, whilst waiting, go early but then again on here there have been big ques early, so be prepared!

  18. I have just returned from laos, after bieng unsure weather they would follow in pennangs footsteps by stamping "not to return" and am happy to say i appllied for and recieved a Tourist x 2 visa!

i did not meet anyone who was refussed or had any problems!

Now this is my first Tourist x 2 so ill presume ill get

arrived back yesterday and got 60 days

then top up at jontiem 30 days

then cambodia border 60 days (for double entry)

then top up at jontiem 30 days

then ill just do 2 x border runs keping1 left for plan b thats 60 days

so in theory thats 8 months sorted!

now if i have added this wrong please let me know, as i say it is my first double entry!

    cheers chris :o

nearly 6 months i got my first tourist x 2 at laos, due to pennang having a bad write up at that time, just looking to compare with what i thought i would get (above post) and how i have gone on.

12 dec nong kai got 60 days

11 feb imigration got 30 days ext

03 mar pong nam ron 60 days cant remember why or where? presume thats ban leam.

    30 april 30 days ext

31 may 1st visa exempt, ban leam, yeah, pong nam ron

so ive now got a month then do another run for 30 thats end july, leaving one run as plan b.

    result

so far so good, got what i was advised on here, cheers!

    chris

    next visa pennang vs laos?

penang, rush rush rush, and was user unfriendly, might have changed now, but not a place to look forward to.

Vientiane, more relaxed, better city and people.

at the moment for me i think it will be vientiane but maybe have a week up there and look around a bit more, and maybe plan come back nearer to chang mai and chang rai as i havent been yet!
