  1. Exactly. There will not be a war with Thailand. A military confrontation yes maybe. But thats normal in this region. Cambodians wouldnt stand a chance.

    A WAR is something different!

I am about to boycott this forum right now when I see where it comes form.

Show a little understanding aobut how things work. If others broadcast certain things,

DONT JUST STEP OUT AND DO THE EXACT SAME THING FOR JUST THAT REASON!

I don't need someone to filter the news for me, thank you. If the officials are talking war, I don't need someone translating that to what they think was meant. I will make my own decision. I live fairly close to the border for half the year and I want real news not tourist friendly TAT spin. Go ahead and boycott, you can probably get up to date info from the TAT website.

"Cambodians wouldnt stand a chance." arnt they your brothers???? either way, no-one will win, cos they aint anything to win, only deaths and sorry on both sides.

just thinking though, a War as opposed to a military confrontation, sounds worse if you were running a busness there daily, you know, somthing like a VISA Run to the cambodian border bussness??

  2. Cambodia cant possibly sustain a "war" in this area, Thailand has got the better strategic position, firepower, resources.

Not if the army is not united. If parts of the army works against the other parts.

when was the last time thailand was in a war internally or with neighbours???? i don't mean border skirmishes......i mean real brutal ones...

while no doubt better armed the big question is can untested thai soldiers stomach the brutalites of war and cope hardships in the jungles better than their foes???

if it does happen..it's going to be bloody machine guns jungle warfare......

"it's going to be bloody machine guns jungle warfare......"

No, it will be a Turkey shoot, and Everyone knows it, i feel very sorry for cambodia at this moment, and thailand will get bad press about it, but at the end of the day look at what george has reported, its Cambodia throwing the gaunlet, not the other way round!

  3. On Sunday the 12th, two French young men had rented jet skiis on Lamai Beach and had just started out from shore. As they got to deep water, they saw one of the Thai guys operating the business speeding out to one of them (the two boys had split up after leaving the beach, each going in different directions). As the Thai came into earshot, he yelled that he forgot something on the rented jet ski. He came to a stop in the middle of a turn and then shouted for the Frenchman to come to him...as he approached, the Thai told him to kill the engine.

The Frenchman told me he did not have that in mind but that if the owner said to stop the engine, he thought it best to comply. Having done that, and being pointed at the Thai man and his jet ski...the Frenchman realized immediately that once you stop the engine you lose all ability to steer. So he coasted into the other craft, the one with the Thai man in it.

The result was a fiberglass puncture -- an irregular hole about fist-sized.

Back on dry sand, the two boys tried to call the tourist police -- they called a number that they had gotten from their hotel and also one that the regular police (the boys in brown) had given them after they arrived on the scene.

No one ever answered the phone.

I could go on with the story, and how the two young men were cordial and easily capitulated to the arbitrary payout that they were compelled to make, even though this accident was clearly the fault of the Thai man.

I mentioned to the boys, after they had coughed up a wad of cash, that the tourist police are generally worthless, and they said, "Yes, that's what the hotel said."

So anyone from the tourist police reading this, please feel free to reply. This was a textbook example of an incident that needed the assistance of a competent tourist police force. Where were you?

    M

"This was a textbook example of an incident that needed the assistance of a competent tourist police force. Where were you?"

"this accident was clearly the fault of the Thai man. " ?????????? why?

youve spoke to these kids, yep, you spoke to "thai man, i doubt it, right, you put yourselfe in the thai mans shoes, hes trying to get 2 FORGIENERS to come and speak with him for whatever reason, and one runs into you, breaking your boat/jetski, irespective of how he was supposed to have told him to end engine fin engine shut of engine make boat stop, even if he said run your jetski into mine so it breaks, its common sense and now the kids have learnt a little more about life, sum num nar!

as for the police, i would presume they were having a drink in a nearside cafe watching it all, laughing thier heads off, guessing how much they would end up paying, as i would have been doing the same.

This was a textbook example of an incident that needed the 2 french guys mothers with them on thier first jetski lessons! :o

  4. The problem is I'm booking from outside the country! :o

  5. Hi all!

I'm wanting to book 3 tickets with air asia from Bangkok to Krabi. Booking online but the credit card holder isn't going to be with us on our trip!is this a problem?I know with many airlines the creditcard holder must be part of the travelling group! Any info is appreciated! Also one more thing....do we have to check in our luggage online at the same time as booking our tickets???i see there's an option to do so? can we check in at the airport rather?do we have to pay to ckeck in bags?sorry lots of q's but i honestly have never seen this with low cost airlines before so wan to make sure i book it all correctly!

    Thanks:)

call air asia on 025159999 tell them when you want to go etc, then tell them you want pay at 7/11 shop, they will give you a code and you take that to any 7/11 shop, you pay extra 20/30 bhat for 7/11 fee.

from memory you can only do this way if it is somthing like 3/4 days pror to flight.

7/11 give you a recipt and code and airasia confirm your booking by email or phone, its easy peasy lemon squzzey!

  6. What happened on Soi 6 over the weekend please? Did the bars open normally at lunchtime?

Some of them are trying to operate behind closed doors, but not sure they will keep on doing it with the police checking closely, and a few places getting caught already. Expensive at 30,000 Baht fine along with a 30 day closure!

Pubs like Queen Vic and Lord Nelson can open all day as long as they have the proper resto/hotel/guesthouse licenses.

The only thing the officials can bother them with is the alcohol law, which states that you can only sell between 11 AM and 2 PM and between 5 PM and 11 PM.

IMO, unfortunately this crackdown is here to stay!

They are however trying to work out a compromise, as of today this means:

Bar open at 4 PM, but no ladies (apart from a few proper dressed ones who can post as "waitresses") and no alcohol.

From 5 PM alcohol can be sold.

From 6 PM, when the entertainment license kicks in, the ladies can come out...

MMMM...interesting that the Vic and their establishmenrts are exempt but the Sportsman not............I like the bit about only 2 women and "properly" dressed....properly dressed for what???

I hear there will be another meeting in a few days/weeks.

Is there any significance in the rumour that a businesswoman has bought the street - the thoroughfare that is?

i would have thought that most of Soi Sex business is carried out in the afternoon?

"Is there any significance in the rumour that a businesswoman has bought the street - the thoroughfare that is?"

not heard of it, but maybe? it was reported to be owned by the bank at top of soi 6 on 2nd road, however there is a lady overlooking all this, now what her actul role is, and weather its official i have no idea, some rhoumurs even sujjest its all down for girls longtime bennifeit of working less hours per day, weather they want it or not???

"I hear there will be another meeting in a few days/weeks."

very good chance of that as so many gov/poice/licencing etc bodies are involved, but i have no dates yet, normally we are all told things 1 or 2 days before.

"Pubs like Queen Vic and Lord Nelson can open all day as long as they have the proper resto/hotel/guesthouse licenses."

they too must be able to predict a futre not as good, the "market Tavern" was a great bar, till the market moved!

"IMO, unfortunately this crackdown is here to stay!"

who knows? no -one, most i would like is for whoever thought of this very good idea, is to get promoted to a better job, say chang mai, and the new person in charge to show his authority by making us all open longer hours!

  7. I've always gone overboard on licenses because they cost next to nothing and give you some greater flexibility but as Monty said, it is nigh on impossible to get a straightforward explanation of anything official from those who really just want to fine you for some infringement of a previously unknown rule.

Not sure why they have to close though ? Get a bar license (should have already) and open as a bar from whenever. It's the sex onsite which is the problem.

"Get a bar license (should have already) and open as a bar from whenever" :o:D:D

i think you answered it yourselfe

" it is nigh on impossible to get a straightforward explanation of anything official"

    Moving the goal posts! :D

but i think now its changed its a lot easier, ive wrote it down for all staff so they dont forget,

4pm open bar and sell coke, coffee & tea,

    5pm can sell beer,

    6pm girls start work.

oh, and all go home 2am.

  8. well, my cahier has just come back again from a meeting in soi 6 and today is saying all pattaya not just soi 6, must not open till 6pm!

so still no clearer, just phoned bertie whos gone on a recon see if he can make it any more understandable.

so they cant turn all bars off in thailand till 6pm at night, surely, so some will have to open, then will it be bars serving food? or accomadation? or open bars or closed bars or air con bars or non aircon or non smoking bars, bars with "you" in the name?????

    see what tommorow brings!

As far as I understand it is that this is all about enforcing the alcohol ban.NO alcohol served before 6 PM.I remember from about 2 years ago that law was announced, please correct me if I'm wrong.

How long the enforcement gonna hold is another case of course.

Dont think it was anything ever to do with bars.

OK, so it is a ban on alcohol, so why not turn your bar in to a coffee shop, give Starbucks a run for there money?

Also question what the law says, is it a blanket ban on the sale of Alcohol or is just bars, are hotels exempt?

"Also question what the law says" :o:D

  11. I am coming to Thailand from the Uk on a Uk passport next Wednesday. i have no time fto get a visa. So i will be travelling on a Tourist 30 Day Stamp.

    Have I understood correctly that:

    1. If I cross a border with a neighbouring country and return on a "visa run" , I can stay for a further 30 days with no problem?

    2. I can do this a maximum of twice, making a total of 90 days.

If so, how long do I then have to stay out of Thailand before I can come in again?

    Many thanks.

I did read loads of threwads but it still seems confusing.

    Travis

the others have answered your questions, im just gonna add that hull and also birmingham issue visas there and then within about 30 mins walk and that saves a lot of messing around.

  12. Here's a trip report from Vientiane.

For me, I was in no particular hurry and did not need a double-entry tourist visa. A single entry suited my circumstances fine.

Flew to Udon with Air Asia from Suvannaphum. Total cost of flight 848 Baht. I booked it in advance. The flight was half an hour late and arrived in Udon at 17:45.

At Udon airport, there are minibus 'queues' (in the Thai sense of the word). One of the queues serves Nong Khai, including the border. It's a fixed price of 200 Baht and the van goes when it gets 9 people. I waited less than 10 minutes.

At the bridge, there was no immigration queue, straight through. Paid my 20 Baht for the shuttle bus across. I was approached by a woman on the Thai side offering a minibus to the hotel of my choice in Vientiane for 200 Baht. I found another farang and we paid 100 Baht each. She was helpful and the minibus was a luxury one. Her name was Sukmila. Am I allowed to say that here? Well, never mind.

Arrived in Vientiane around 7:45. Most of the guesthouses were full. I had not booked ahead. Found a dorm for $6. On the following day, Sunday, I moved to a fan room for $12. All the guesthouses in that Wat Mixay area seem to charge the same prices, namely $12 for a fan room and $15 for an air-con room.

Recced the embassy on Sunday. The last time I had got a visa from Vientiane was 10 years ago and it had moved!. The embassy and the consular services department are now separate. The consular services department which issues visas is on 23 Singha (August) Road around 5 to 10 minutes' walk north of Patu Chai (Arc de Triomphe). I tried to get a visa application form off the guard on the Sunday but it was not possible.

I arrived at the office at 7:20 on the Monday. Despite the fact, I was 1 hour and 10 minutes early, I was still about 20th in the queue. Later, there were maybe 300 people in the queue. This is an estimate that could be wildly wrong either way. I was sold an application form for 20 Baht by one of the touts. I couldn't see them being handed out at all. He offered to fill it in for 50 Baht! It does state on the bottom of the form that it is not for sale. You could point this out to them.

It was very hot and unshaded outside. The gates opened at 8:30 and everyone piled in. There is glue on the table under the plastic awning if you need to glue your photos to the application form. I handed in my application at 9:00. I stupidly omitted to provide a photocopy of the details page of my passport. I legged outside and got it done for 40 Baht! Came back in and handed my application in at 9:10. No way was I going back to the back of the queue! Just for the idiots like me, you need your passport, 1000 Baht (for a single entry tourist visa), 2 photos, and a copy of the pages in the passport providing your details and your Laos visa.

I was not asked to provide evidence of funds for a tourist visa.

After handing in my application, I proceeded to the house to wait to pay. Finally, a bit of air-con. :o I waited there for 1 hour and was called to pay at 10:10. It resembled a game of passport bingo and people were called in a somewhat random order. The people further back in the queue had to wait outside. If they were bingoed, they had to rely on friends to call them in. A guard kept over 100 people waiting outside in the heat.

So, the total waiting time to hand in my application was 2 hours and 50 minutes. I shared a tuk-tuk back to my hotel near Wat Mixay. They asked for 120B. I and another guy paid 50 Baht each. Best to share and walk past the ones parked near the door.

I returned on Tuesday to pick up my visa. The pick-up time is specified at between 1:00 and 3:00. I turned up at 1:05. This was certainly the worst time to arrive. However, it was much quicker this time and I picked up my passport at 1:30. It was very hot again in the queue. So this time it was a total of 25 minutes to wait to pick up the passport. This time I had hired a bicycle for 40 Baht for a day so I cycled up to the visa office.

Many of the visa runners went straight to the bus station. There are 6 direct buses a day to both Nong Khai and Udon Thani. In addition there are 2 direct buses a day to Khon Kaen leaving at 8:15 am and 2:15 pm costing 180 Baht and taking 4 hours to arrive at Khon Kaen bus station. There are of course many many taxi services to the border.

I won't be doing that again unless it is necessary. It was too much hassle. I'll be getting my next visa from Hull through the post when I visit the UK later in the year.

Hope this is of use to some-one.

    good report briggsy,

"I won't be doing that again unless it is necessary. It was too much hassle"

its unbelivible, that a money making buisness, makes it hard for you to spend money, ok for many there is no other choice, but still its got to be better than a 2 x 12 hour flights!

  13. I'm looking to buy a new, but basic street bike(fat tires) for local riding in Jomtien. Which department store(Tesco,Big C or Carrfour) has the best prices and how much should I expect to pay?

big c 2nd road got a good range, you can pay 1,500 up to about 6,000, if ya gonna use it a bit get the 6,000 one has metal, brake, and gear levers etc as opposed to plastic, and has front and rear suspension!

  14. Its pretty obvious he started something as he is drunk as a skunk. See him spitting on the children? If I was there he would of been eating through a straw for the rest of his life.

I wonder what happend to him after the cop took him away?

"Its pretty obvious he started something as he is drunk as a skunk."

just cos you a "drunk" dosent mean you a total asshol_e, he may well be piessed as a fort, he may have been in a bar having a good night and maybe one of those nice little children might have been trying to "borrow" his phone and wallet from his drunken pokets, maybe he relizes this and trys to get up????

"I wonder what happend to him after the cop took him away?"

been in many police cells all over world, they have to have the last word, he will have got a kicking, but he's a big boy, a couple of dry days and off we go :o

  18. Thanks for everyone's contributions on this great thread. I shall be doing this visa run soon. The last time I did it was over 10 years ago so I'm sure procedures have changed. I will keep my questions concise and to the point.

    1. Normally a rot dtoo is available from Udon airport to the border. It costs 150 B per person. It 'meets' the Air Asia flight that comes in at 5:15 pm. However, does this run on a Saturday?

    2. If transport from Udon airport to the border is unavailable, how do I cheaply get from Udon airport to Udon downtown?

    3. Apart from photos, a completed application form, (an air ticket out of Thailand) and 1000 Baht, what else is required to obtain a single-entry tourist visa?

    4. Where can I get a blank tourist visa application form that will be accepted by the Thai embassy in Vientiane? The food vendors? Online?

    5. If time is not an issue, what time is best to turn up at the embassy to avoid ridiculous queues? I could happily spend a week in Vientiane.

    6. Can anyone recommend a hotel/guesthouse for no more than 400 Baht? No air-con or frills required. Prefer to have own bathroom.

Thanks in advance for any useful info. I shall post a trip report as 'pay back' when the trip is completed.

brggsy, did you go, and did you get chance to see that sign on doorway to cash office, ref holidays closed?

    chris
