  1. the aussie kid and his family as millionaires also. he was studying at the most expensive international school in Bangkok and balling it up in Koh Samui.

No doubt he had enjoyed the benefit of corruption and significant wealth in Thailand, whether that was simple stuff like avoiding motorbike fines or more.

Now the boot is on another foot and it is all "young aussie with promising future as student/model" vs "super rich chinese bad guys" , when it is really just two silver spoon kids who got into a bar fight and one guy ended up a lot worse for wear.

Obviously you know nothing about the case

I was more sympathetic initially (this case has been heavily covered by Drummond). I was more in the hang em high court of public opinion wanting to see the bullies suffer some sort of legal retribution for their action.

But something in this article doesn't sit right with me.

"And that was when the parents got involved: Mr Hansen-Bartel’s mother, Australian expat Annie Hansen, and Mr Chang’s father, American businessman Raymond Nobu Chang.

She said Mr Chang (senior) produced a document offering her 800,000 baht to drop the charges against the two boys.

It offers Ms Hansen 800,000 baht, but he said that happened after she asked for 10 million baht.

Mr Chang (senior) wrote an email: “Ms Hansen demanded that we pay her 10 million Thai Baht or else she would make sure the two boys ‘Rot in jail’.”

Ms Hansen did not dispute asking for 10 million baht to compensate for her son’s injuries.

From this moment forward, Mr Hansen-Bartel’s case turned against him."

If this is literally true, it tells me that the mother is attempting to extract as much financial gain as possible from the situation. The quest for justice being promoted in the media came after. I don't know. The only thing I'm certain of is you have a hot-headed barfight over a girl. An old and familiar story.

After that things get a little more murky.

Even if she did, could you blame her? It would have been the only 'fair' way in Samui to get justice in my opinion. It would be enough to pay for Jacks surgeries, compensate for the tragic incident and all the pain and suffering those cowards have caused. I still don't believe for a second that she asked for 10 million baht and if she did, she probably did it out of despite towards the attackers father and not because she is looking to make a buck of her son.

It wasn't a classical bar fight where everyone wakes up the next morning with a black eye and doesn't remember what happened. The impact on Jacks and his mothers life is much bigger than any of us can imagine. I don't think Jack has much fun going to clubs anymore or trying his luck with girls after being almost beaten to death for no reason at all. Being in his early twenties and calling Bangkok his home and now having his world turned upside down is a tragedy, not a bar fight.

The kid has almost been beaten to death, has been thrown in jail on drummed up charges and has to live day by day in fear of being sentenced for a crime he didn't commit once he returns to Thailand.

This entire case is based on false accusation, lies and corruption. Welcome to Samui.

  2. The 7 series got usually the biggest drop in price, just like the X series. I saw a 2008 BMW X3 this morning for 799,000 baht.

Years ago I bought a 2009 M3 in black. Wrapped the car and when taking off the wrap the first layer of paint came off too and the original car colour was blue.

Put the wrap back on, sold it to the same dealer where I bought it from and it resurfaced on a 2nd hand car website as 2011 black BMW again.

Most dealers here won't even let you test drive their cars properly, so you do your research and buy from something like BMW certified cars with warranty to be sure.

Go cheap and you pay double - its always like that.

  3. Buying a house is actually pretty easy, especially on a new development which they are obviously trying to sell out as quickly as possible. We were in a situation looking for brand new house from a well known developer. The village was around 80% finished.

My thai wife not having worked for a few years didn't have any salary slips and my income from abroad wasn't even questioned.

He told us, we just pay 10% down, he will put everything in her name and provide the 'paperwork' for the bank to get the loan approved. We went along and 3 days later we could have signed the papers and would have had the keys for the house.

    Luckily we backed out.

  4. If you want to live a western lifestyle you'll end up paying western prices. Rent alone is 75,000 baht/month for a 3br condo near the BTS line.

Add a maid, a dog, a wife, food and you easily go through 200,000-300,000 baht/month. Not bragging or trying to call anyone a cheap charlie.

A simple trip to Villa will set you back 10k/week for some decent beef, organic and healthy food. Add in eating out, weekends at the clubs (not gogo bars) and so on.

Our electricity bill is around 12,000 baht.

Living in the heart of thonglor, paying government rates, not jacked up prices by the condo management.

Not to mention true vision, true internet and the list goes on.. (healthcare...)

Again, just our situation, not trying to make anyone look dumb - I know the old folks probably think I am stupid for burning through that kind of money but you live your life, i LIVE mine.

  5. The guy being from Singapore and this been his second offence faces death penalty if punished under Singapore law. If memory serves me right, all 'singaporeans' get punished for their crimes AGAIN when returning to Singapore.

The question remains who ratted them out. From what I can gather this seems to have happened at Rhythm Huay Kwang Condo.

RTP just doesn't randomly bust in doors in that place.

even if you live in a dump ,thai police dont bust in doors randomly

someone grassed then up for sure

probably someone close to them and jealous

young wealthy singaporean drug dealer and his maxim gf

ill be amazed to see a prosecution considering these people are probably wealthier than the average somchai...........

Agreed, not like poor little Yooyee, who's in for a lengthy stay at HM's pleasure

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/733755-bangkok-wellknown-ex-model-yooyee-jailed-15-years-for-cocaine-possession/

Still confused if thats a mixup. 250MG is 1/4g and she gets 15years and a 1,5m baht fine?

Makes no sense what so ever.

  7. you seem to be looking for anyway to stay in Thailand, marriage, start up a business, now the ED Visa for English.

If I remember correctly you are Canadian, French or English? If English, why would you need to learn English.

Why not try Muay Thai, or Diving or cooking?

I am a native speaker. I want to 'study' something that requires the least amount of effort. And if Immigration were to test me on my English skills to ensure I'm going to classes or whatever, I would have no issues.

Oh, I wasn't aware you could get an ED Visa for non academic activities. Thanks for letting me know. Is there a list of these eligible activities anywhere?

ED visas are only available if a course is approved by the MOE. Very few (if any) non academic courses will have such approval.

Anything, including English can be studied in Thailand on any type of "visa"

    Thanks.

Slightly off topic, but what's the definition of 'working' here?

In previous threads, I had mentioned that I own a company overseas. I don't actually do any work per se, at this company. So my income from that job is similar to a pension income, or dividend income.. It is passive. I maybe check emails a couple times per week, to communicate with my accountant in regards to this business.

So am I working as per Thai law?

    Yes.

  8. Why is it always VT6?

That building is such rubbish, staid there once and never again. Walking down the hallways between all the units can make one depressed. Then theres guys with the door open because they can't afford the AC and are laying in their beds all day, basically waiting to die. No saint family person would bother to stay there or take their family for a holiday in one of those units. It's just a monger hot spot, nothing else.

Almost certain the guy jumped on his own. Who would want to live a life in VT6 in Pattaya? Takes a special kind of person to bear all the shit thats going on there...

    /rant over

  9. Easy answer ....the closest it an emergency then figure the rest out from there...and dont you think it would be a good idea to find out if your covered insurance wise, and if your not get some insurance ,

Easy answer. The company says I am but, until I have a claim and they are willing to pay it, I am not fully believing. I don't trust insurance companies to do the right thing. What do you think?

Look into BUPA. It's one of the best and easiest solution. I think its 60 or 70,000 baht a year. Had surgery at Bumrungrad and ended up with a 600,000 baht bill. They covered 95% of it.

  10. Bumrungrad, BNH, Samitivej - wouldn't set my foot into another one if I had the choice.

In case of emergency, what ever is closest of course. You don't wanna die on the way to BNH because you don't want to go to the police hospital.

Anyway in case of a real emergency I highly doubt the hospital matters to you. It'll be up to the people that bring you in where you end up.

Everything else is not a real emergency.

  11. In the footer of the page, you can find "In English".

You can also fix the issue in the url:

    http://www.apple.com/th/shop

just change the prefix from th to th-en

    http://www.apple.com/th-en/shop

    None of this is true.

Apple, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to remove English support from their Thailand online shop. I've written Tim Cook about it, we'll see if he responds.

Sadly the english option disappeared a while ago. Was looking for a while too but can't find it anymore either. Was like 'Vicio' said it or a similar link structure.

  12. Mac2hand.com is good place. Sold and bought many things over the years there with no issues.. theres another forum completely in Thai for used macbook parts (which name I forgot)

I was always able to check the serial number, verify it with Apple and never had any issues.

    Just personal experience.
