  1. @ dogpoo and @ britpop

In your working years where you civil servants?

Only people with a mind like yours would like to take away any fun that there is in life.

Don't do this, do not ! do that and if you have to do it it let it be controlled by the authorities..... yeez man a lot of us are in Thailand just to get away from this kind of thinking !

You don't like Songran well stay inside, it's only 1 day per bloody year !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so Mr gum, you are embracing death during these celebrations, remember innocent people get killed, i can't except your thinking and attitude, your saying it's fun so bugger it if people die, i'm sure you'd think differently if it was a family member.killed, yes it's only 1 day a year, but with nearly the biggest death tole and why should i have to stay indoors, you are saying lets have "mob rule", if the year on year figure showed a decrease and even no deaths then party on, but it doesn't, on the 14th April 2013 check the death tole, if 1 person dies was it really worth it!!!!!

People don't get killed during celebrations, they get killed driving intoxicated. Don't confure the 2.

    Or by people driving intoxicated.

Personally I am against the ban as usually I know where the drunken idiots are likely to be gathered in greater numbers (funnily enough those same places where it looks like the ban will be in effect) and have been able to avoid those places and choose to enjoy some water and fun with more moderately/sensibly behaved folks.

  2. The Thatcher years saw me from my early twenties through into my 30's. I lived in Fife Scotland - an area renowned for its mines and pits. I am not and never have been a lefty. The hypocrisy I heard from my father and all the fools around at the time saw to that, but I hated the right almost as much. The Thatcher years did me personally no harm at all. I took my own road and ended up a millionaire - not a high flier (it took me years and a lot of damn hard work). But the very mention of Margaret Thatcher's name still makes me want to spit and I can feel my blood pressure going up even as write this.

She singlehandedly ruined what was once the greatest nation on Earth and I hope Satan is roasting her like a herring right now

I must admit that i see it a little differently. The 'once greatest nation on earth' had been in decline for a long time and was in serious danger of being killed by the unions. She stepped in and initially put things back on the right track. Sadly she wasn't able to see the changes through fully enough and, as has been posted elsewhere, put all her eggs in the service and financial sectors instead of trying to reinvigorate industry.

Overall a good start but stayed on too long. However, much better than things would have been if the unions/left not been reined in.

  3. I have always posted on here that I think that the International school option provides by far the best education available in Thailand.

While I still believe the above to be true, in recent weeks I have started to question whether international schools are the best choice for every child.

I think that if you are likely to be leaving Thailand before the child's education is complete, or you wish your child to attend school/university overseas, then an international school is almost certainly your best option.

However, if you think your child's future is likely to be in Thailand, then perhaps a private Thai school would be more suitable as it should provide your child with a deeper understanding of the Thai language and culture and better prepare him/her for study and work here.

I remain unconvinced by bilingual schools, though I am sure there must be some decent ones out there.

Of course knowing where your child's long-term future lies is the difficult bit!

  4. A lovely situation in Phuket. What kind of criminal activity is next? If you think that is bad now, wait another 3-5 years.

Gun crime and/or robbery is not uncommon all over Thailand, even in Chiang Rai I'm sure. Maybe you just can't see it through all the smoke and haze up there tongue.png

  5. At the Bangkok Phuket Hospital you can die expensively and fast as it happened to a good friend of mine. I almost lost my leg because of the doctor who butchered it there. If you are ill this is no place for you unless you have a lot of money to waste and want to die quick.

Conversely, the Phuket International Hospital is one of the best I have ever been to up country. Dr. Tolinet there is one of the best doctors that I have ever known.

Personally I have had the opposite experience and would never return to Phuket International Hospital. I have had only good experiences at Bangkok Hospital.

  6. It's just south of Mission --- https://foursquare.com/v/dad-yontrakit-phuket/50531ca9e4b0540a7f123bf4

Looks like the Bangkok Skoda dealer recently opened a branch in Phuket.

Yes, they did. I was in there a couple of months ago when I was looking for a new car. I am a bit of a Czechophile and love Skoda. The Superb really lives up to its name (although I do admit it is rather a daft name) and I believe it is the best car for the money in Phuket. The Yeti looks like it could be fun too.

Unfortunately it was my wife's car that we were changing and I just couldn't persuade her to go with a brand that she felt (probably correctly) would have poor resale value.

  7. I was at Mission Hospital yesterday and took a walk as I was early for my appointment. On the same side as the hospital about 150 mtrs towards Phuket town I saw Skodas in a showroom. Didn't note the name of the dealer though,,,, sorry.

It's Yontrakit or something like that. They are the official Skoda dealers for Thailand I believe. They had the Superb and the Yeti in last time I was there and they have a small service place round the back.

  8. Purely from my own observation, it seems to me that children that have 2 languages to learn from birth, tend to start off with both languages more slowly than monolingual children but then they catch up well a bit later and from then on in are in a good position.

So basically I would say that you haven't really got too much to worry about at this stage. By putting him in an international school, you are doing all that you can and he'll get a lot more individual attention there if there does turn out to be any problem. Just keep encouraging him at home as much as possible too.
