I’ve been living here for 5 years now and the took took and taxi fares are normally about the same and I’ve gotten pretty good at knowing what it’s supposed to cost. I figured it would cost between 100 and 200 baht from Mo Chit bus station to the My Bed Ratchada Hotel which was 6K approximately if I recall right, I remember that’s what my Google maps said but depending on the route he drove it might have been a little further then 6K. That’s an estimate it could have been as far as 10K for all I know depending on the route he drove. But according to Google it was about 6K.

I think your wife was just lucky, although every once in a while I do run into an extra cheap taxi or took took driver that charges me less for more but nothing excessive sometimes it just depends on the driver and I use them all the time for years so I know what I’m doing. It’s quite possible that your wife only got charged 120 baht for 20K if traffic was smooth. I’ve had drivers only charge me about the same before for 10 or 20K like what you said about your wife, but that’s very rare though. Sometimes you do get lucky and get a cheaper driver but normally what he changed me is about right. In Korat I normally pay a took took driver about 100 or 120 baht for 2 to 10K depending on the driver. If it’s only less than 800 meters and I don’t want to walk because I’m buying a lot of groceries or something that usually costs about 40 baht. It depends on the driver, traffic, distance, and if I ask him to make multiple stops along the way and wait for me. All that effects the cost as well.

I actually did have a took took driver in Korat try to over charge me once, just last week in fact, but he was one of the few drivers who haven’t seen me around Korat before. Korat isn’t a big city and most of the drivers around Korat know me because I’ve been around here for almost 5 years now. And the taxi fares in Bangkok weren’t much different than Korat although we took the MRT and Sky Train mostly only a few cabs. In Bangkok I actually got out of one cab and went to the Sky Train because the traffic was just so damn slow it was going to take an hour just to drive 10K lol, so we took the train instead. LOL, when I was still in shape I used to be able to run 10K in almost half that time in 36 minutes.

Anyway last week in Korat I had a took took driver take us only about 4K I think it is from nearby our house to Terminal 21 and when I got out and asked how much he said 400 baht, and I replied “excuse me, HOW MUCH DID YOU JUST SAY???” Then he immediately replied “100 baht” really fast lol. That’s the only time I’ve ever had a took took or cab driver in Korat ever even try to scam me. I still look pretty young and he probably thought it was my first day here or something because I had never seen or remembered that driver before. Just a coincidence that happened last week.

You also have to take into account that Bangkok is more expensive than the smaller cities like where I live, but I thought 200 baht was about right and fair. And I was expecting it to be between 100 and 200 baht that’s actually what I thought it would be. Like I said I’ve gotten used to knowing what taxi and took took fare is going to be for where I’m going after 5 years and it’s almost always about the same depending on where I’m going.

I don’t know how long you’ve been in Thailand or where you live in Thailand. But no actually I did not get scammed I avoided a scam that night.

Section 2 of the above official order states his salary will remain the same,  in his new position as senior dog on a leash under PM Prayut.  Seems Prayut wants to keep a  very close watch on him.

This fits with an earlier guess. Thaksin/team may have tried to connect with BJ because they thought his flamboyant style and public popularity would be useful in any future street protests, which now look more likely.  The next protests will include cyber-control, which BJ also knows.

Remember Taksin and Sae Daeng, Lt Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, the highly popular leader of the red street protests in 2009, before he was shot through the head while talking to a reporter live.

Sae Daeng and BJ have quite similar flamboyant leadership styles.

Both Thaksin and BJ have police roots. Sae Daeng was Army.

Both Thaksin and BJ were just recently stripped of position or honors by the same person.

Sae Daeng was probably too flamboyant, having been fired for throwing a hand grenade in his commanding general's office because the general forced Sae Daeng to take dancing lessons. (that's Thainess)

As for Prawit? A man with a watch knows what time it is, a man with two is never sure.

I was about to say, what could possibly cause such a sudden reversal of fortunes for the Big Bowl of Rice Porridge -- being discovered on Mr. T's list of Skype contacts?

  3. As long as the same people who make the laws and enforce the laws are the primary beneficiaries of all corruption large and small, there will be no change in the status quo.  It all starts at the top.  The Thai system is rigged to favor the most corrupt (case in point would be thaksin's business "success" and wealth multiplication factor) and to marginalize those who would eschew corrupt practices.

Regarding the sad case of skimming funds donated to help the poor, this is nothing new in the world.  The ratio of funds received to funds disbursed should always be subject to close scrutiny, as charities and NGOs are especially well situated to take advantage of the poor and naive.

You want to punch people on the nose for doing what every male alive is biologically programmed to do?  Seems strange.

That's why I often feel fortunate to have sons and not daughters.  Fat old guys out in public wearing nothing but a Speedo,, black socks, and shower slippers are annoying enough without having them drool over your teenaged daughter.

Of course he is a pedo. A 15 year old Thai boy , looks like a 12 year old western boy. That's why these people come here, because they think they can get away with it and make their fantasies come true with young Thai boys. Yes they are perverts.

I'd say he may or may not be a pedophile.  Perhaps you're correct in your assumption that having sex with a 15 year old Thai is the closest he can get to achieving his fantasy of sex with a prepubescent child, but that is a fairly large leap to make.

  6. These topics invariably produce the same litany of calls for castration, prison rape, and some bizarre medieval tortures indicative of a truly disturbed mind.  Very little in the way of enlightened discourse to be found; rather than face the truth of the matter some folks prefer to hide behind expressions of disgust, indignation, and advocation in favor of the most severe penalties imaginable.

In cases of actual child molestation, these would be understandable, even appropriate responses.  Who in their right mind would equate sexually assaulting a prepubescent child, or fantasizing about such, with discretely ogling a high school cheerleader or some athletic 17 year old girl in a bikini?  There is most definitely a big, big difference between a child and a sexually mature young woman (or man), and to call any man who casts an appreciative glance at a teenage girl (or boy) a pedophile is to be willfully ignorant and in total denial of reality.

Sometimes I wonder if, similar to the cases of extreme homophobia exhibited by men insecure in their own heterosexuality, these would-be ball choppers and man rapers are worried about their own repressed desires.

Incidentally, the Thai title nang sao means unmarried woman (corresponding to the now-politically incorrect term "Miss" in English), while dek ying means female child.  Fifteen years of age is where the distinction is made, which most reasonable people would agree is appropriate enough.

  7. By no means should the alleged behavior of the accused be excused - if it's true they're despicable scumbags - but rest assured the victim is likely not an innocent bystander.  These sort of activities by the police are commonly seen as  payback against a particularly uncooperative drug user or double crossing informant.  The threat is always, "Oh, you don't have any yabaa/ice on you right now?  So how much do you want?" If the target is known to be a prostitute, rape may be on the to-do list as her credibility is nil anyhow.

  8. No matter what the factors are which contributed to this terrible accident, I believe there ought to be far better training available to young riders and drivers in Thailand, but realistically, how would such programs be funded?  There should be at least some mandatory classroom instruction pertaining to vehicle dynamics, safe operation under varying weather conditions, and rules of the road.  11 or 12 years of age would be a good age to start learning the basics.

Proficient in off road situations is one thing. Learning road craft is a totally different ball game. USA 14? I'm glad that in the UK you have to be 16 to get on a restricted (30mph) moped.

Yet Marc Marquez was able to compete successfully in 125cc World Championship motorcycle racing at age 15.  I wonder at what age he began racing motorcycles - arguably just as challenging, if not more so, as puttering across town on a Honda Wave?

So I'm riding along, watching my speed, checking my distance from the car in front, checking my mirrors, and there he goes past me another dip s%^& riding flat out on his Fino. How the F can you ever stop that without education and advice from mum and dad and proper training?

More traffic on the roads, less training, it will get worse and worse here. Mark my words. But, hey, I'm just a nobody.

Education and advice, absolutely.  It needs to start as young as possible. Up the country is a totally different road environment from Bkk or Ptown, as well.

If he had responsible parents, he would not have been driving the motorbike at 14 years of age.

More mindless bashing?  I was legally licensed to ride a motorcycle at 14 in the USA.  Many kids 10 or 12 years old are already extremely proficient on off-road motorbikes, as was I.  I submit that youth was not the culprit here; rather, the lack of proper instruction.

A Honey Trap to prove she is a prostitute, keep offering and when she accepts charge her with a crime.   Probably turn out to be an eleven year old from out of country.

Makes sense.  The proposed remuneration is sufficiently ridickulous to rule out anything but the thinly veiled suggestion that her services are indeed available if the price is right. She was so flattered by the bogus offer as to be oblivious to it's implications, thus waving it around as validation of her market value.  Maybe if the dick pix had seemed as oversized as the financial angle, our prankster'd have been onto a winner.
