  1. Hi guys,

I'm always looking to find a good food place that survived the test of time (50 years+). Does anyone know good places in Bangkok? Chinese or Thai or any other cuisine?

I was recommended Prachak Roasted Duck as having the best duck in town. It was certainly a gem to find! Very cheap, good, 100 years of history and a great atmosphere.

    Thanks!

  2. Hi guys,

I'm in Thailand on my 4th back to back SETV. I will be going to Taiwan in 5 weeks, and I'm thinking about some options of coming back safely to Thailand. Based on few visa reports, I understand that Taipei was denying SETVs so I don't plan on applying for one there. Instead, I consider:

    1) flying back directly to DMK and trying to get VEE (I have not had a VEE in more than 2,5 years; before only 1 or 2).

    2) flying to Malaysia and going through the land border to TH and trying to get VEE. If not possible, I go to Penang to get SETV and re-enter

    3) flying to Penang, getting SETV there and crossing via land to TH

I'm thinking about VEE because I haven't had one in a long time, and I will be leaving Thailand for Christmas period anyway, so I'm fine with 60 days in Thailand this time (VEE + 30 day extension of stay). Obviously, I'd much prefer option 1 then 2, and lastly 3. I would appreciate any advice/comment. Much thanks!

There have been no reports of this happening (yet).

What blocks one obtaining a Tourist Visa from a nearby consulate (assuming you meet their requirements) is the presence of an extra-stamp applied to a previous Tourist-Visa (by a consulate) which states, "This person travels to Thailand frequently on Tourist Visas..." or similar.  Once you have that stamp on one of your Tourist-Visas, it is time to get a new passport.

I have been told by consulate-personnel to "get a new passport" to resolve this situation, so they can issue me more Tourist Visas in the future.  So, at least so far, they are not keeping and/or using these types of history-records.

Thanks! Then it sounds like it is in their interest to be issuing visas if they advise so. I assume not every embassy will be explicit in this regard.

Yes, you are right of course, but I'd have thought that anyone would have realised that it was implicit in my statement that only the visa history in the passport was available to the consulate.   I didn't think anyone would need to have it spelled out to the nth degree.

Visa history from the passport is available, yes, of course. My question is if consulate takes a look into its' own visa history records and potentially matches passports to see if an applicant has been applying before i.e. does getting a new passport can help with obtaining SETV?

I wasn't referring to only one consulate - I had read that a consulate would take a look at the applicant's total visa history.  If the consulate thought it was looking a bit iffy, they would either refuse or tell the applicant to obtain a proper non-immi visa next time.

They cannot look at applicant's total visa history. They can look at applicant's history in his passport.

Perhaps what they can do is retrieve visa history from that particular consulate only, but I'm not sure if they do it. Anyone knows? i.e. three SETV from Vientiane in previous passport and the person is applying with a new passport?

He will do it at the airport on departure from the country. The officer will transfer his entry stamp from the old passport to the new one and stamp him out of the country in it.

If he went to Chaeng Wattana they would tell him to do it at the airport.

Correct. Just want to add that ONLY in case of 30-day extension of stay, the passport holder needs to contact Immigration Office which had issued the extension to transfer it into new passport (done it last month myself)

  7. I'm no expert, but I can't imagine that those warnings coming from IO are recorded in any way i.e. note in the system saying "don't let this guy in again" (?)

You could have a problem next time on a visa-exempt entry or not at all (no one can predict). As others replied already it's best to get SETV & have 20k baht or equivalent in major currency on you.

One thing that I read in other threads is that having thai girlfriend helps. Have her at the airport waiting for you, or at least on dial so you can call her if problem arises again.

  8. I figured I can piggy back on this topic, just one question

-> what are the official requirements for SETV from Penang? I checked their site at http://www.thaiembassy.org/penang but the link under services/visa directs me to http://www.consular.go.th/main/th/services/1287 which doesn't provide Penang specific requirements (as opposed to Phnom Penh and Vientiane sites which have them laid out nicely)

You can apply for another extension, pay 1900 baht and be given 7 days to leave the country.

You would not be able to apply for it until the last week of the 30 day extension. They would not accept a 2nd application on the same day you applied for the 30 day extension.

    Got it, thanks ubonjoe!

One last question that I'm unsure about - Does it make a difference if I apply for a 30-day extension during my 1st day in Thailand on 60 day SETV or on the 60th day? want to reconfirm my understanding

  10. Sorry for digging this topic out, but I wonder if things changed and if I understand the content of this thread.

I would like to stay on my current SETV 95 days. Is it possible to get a 30-day extension, and then apply again (same day preferably) for another extension, and by getting denied obtain 7 more days on top of 30-day extension that was given? for a total of 37 days for price 2 x 1,900 baht?

    Thanks

  11. Thanks UbonJoe & BrtiTim! I guess Singaporean Thai Embassy also does a pretty good job on following visa news.

English language version of the same site is outdated then http://www.consular.go.th/main/th/customize/62281-Summary-of-Countries-and-Territories-entitled-for.html even though it's been more than half a year between 10th February 2016, and December 30th 2016. Bit scary they're not changing the English version. Oh well.

Thanks again! Friend will have an easier time then

Wiki is actually usually pretty accurate on most issues. I think someone misinterpreted the announcement on the visa incentive program (countries receiving free visas) with the visa on arrival countries. As of late 2016, the information on the Wikipedia page was correct, but someone read reduced price for visa on arrival for visa incentive program countries as implying all those countries were eligible for visa on arrival. That was how Fiji (and Papua New Guinea) ended up erroneously being added.

What do you mean by "All those countries"? I have not seen Fiji mentioned anywhere in any of Wiki sources. I wasn't digging much myself, but it seems that they were not part of the countries with reduced visa fee http://www.phuketgazette.net/thailand-news/Thailand-visa-fees-be-reduced-B1000/65901

    Not he cannot. See: http://www.consular.go.th/main/th/customize/62281-Summary-of-Countries-and-Territories-entitled-for.html

He will need to get a visa from a embassy or consulate before arrival.

I saw this one as well too, but was searching for more since Fiji seemed to have been there before (according to Wiki)

    Which source link is correct?

Ubon Joe's link has 19 countries, Here2008 has 28 countries.

on sukhumvit soi 15 ish is another big, well priced phramacy

Thanks, might check it out after one Patrick has mentioned.

Do you know the address? Or perhaps could provide more details so I can find it easily? Thx!

  15. Hi guys,

What is the official site for information regarding Thai visas & Exempt entries? Friend holds a passport from Fiji and wants to visit. He's confused about whether or not he can get a visa on arrival.

    1. Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Thailand says Fiji can get 15 days VOA
    2. Cited link from Wikipedia does not mention Fiji at all http://www.consular.go.th/main/contents/files/customize-20160211-172258-195471.pdf
    3. This Thai official website is most useless of all saying only how many countries can get Visa exempt entry, but not which ones https://www.immigration.go.th/faq_detail?id=58a406b6dda4405134681673

Threads on tripadvisor regarding same issue are unanswered. Can anyone point to most up to date source on this? Would truly appreciate

    Much thanks,

    Matt

  16. Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I do admit that I prefer something along side Sukhumvit if possible.

Patrick, will check out that pharmacy today since it's just right next to BTS. Will see!

  17. Hi guys,

I'm looking for a pharmacy that carries a drug which seems not to be in stock (2/3 pharmacies) or not available at all (1/3 pharmacies that I visited yesterday).

I've been trying to buy Tryptanol (international brand name for amitriptyline). I was able to buy it once in Hua Hin, and once in Bangkok. It's basically a sleeping pill (or some use of as anti-depressant). It seems that Thailand does not sell sleeping pills, so I wasn't sure how I get my hands on it before, but I did just by asking "sleeping pill" in a pharmacy.

If anyone knows of a pharmacy that carries not very common drugs let me know! One pharmacist strongly recommended Victory Monument, but when I asked for name or address I only got "there are many". I wouldn't even sure where to go.

    Cheers,

    Matt
