  1. My Thai staff have been complaining about late deliveries (paricularly of bills being delivered after the due date) and we actually had a visit this morning from three senior officers from Surat Thani to discuss the problem. I did not understand the conversation but they left with no illusions about the feelings of the girls. At least they responded to the complaint, now let us see if they do anything about it!

  2. Thanks but...

If i buy the EXISTING company which is already registered, do i still have to register a new company?

Of course phuket is full of Cybercafes as every other tourist destination.. I am not planning for significant profits, more like to start doing business in Thailand, expanding whenever possible in the future.

    Lukez

If you buy an existing company you simply transfer the shares. BUT you also transfer all the liabilities of that company including any latent liabilities that may arise later.

If you are going to do this, start a clean company and buy the assets. Re -register the lease in the new name.

Or talk to a decent lawyer or accountant - you may be able to set up as a sole proprietor or partnership. I admit I am not 100% sure on that but worth enquiring about.

Work out the cash flow and see how much money you are going to have to put in on a monthly basis to keep it afloat!!

  3. Rajabhat University opens tourism college on Samui. Samui Express 15 Feb 2007

Suratthani Rajabhat University is opening a branch on Samui, which will offer courses in international tourism. The Samui campus, according to Dr. Narong Puthaciwin, rector of the university, intends to build up a sustainable tourism development for Samui and the neighboring islands. The university has invited Somdej Phutthajan To, one of the most respected abbots in the country, to preside over the opening ceremony on Feb. 12. Narong disclosed that the international college building is partially completed. Prof. Manot Nualsra, dean of the tourism international college, said the school’s aim is to produce graduates grounded in research and knowledge encompassing the tourism industry. The university hopes to give services of regional and inter- national scope to the tourism industry, as well as to help develop green tourism, which is now the trend in the tourism business. Manot said Koh Samui, being a world-class tourist destination, would serve as an ideal laboratory for the college in term of theory and practice.

  4. Just went to the Tessaban:

Samui has 50.050 registered citizens. Now we are an amphoe (province) formally.

Are you sure about this Claude? We may now have the 50,000 but no way do we have the population density which is also a requirement. I hear that they are looking at making KS KP & KT a special economic zone as per Pattaya as the facts do not support City Status. What criteria are they using to make KS a Province as you state?

    QUOTE

Thesaban are the municipalities in Thailand. There are three levels of municipalities - city, town and village. Both Bangkok and Pattaya are special municipal entities outside the thesaban system.

The municipalities take over some of the responsibilities which are assigned to the districts (Amphoe) or communes (Tambon) for the non-municipal (rural) areas.

    Cities

Thesaban nakhon are usually translated as city. To qualify for city status a municipality needs to have a population of at least 50,000 and a population density of 3,000 per square kilometre.

TownsThesaban mueang are usually translated as town. For a municipality to qualify as a town it either needs to be a provincial capital, or have a population of at least 10,000, a population density of 3000 per km², and sufficient income to cover the tasks of a town.

    Townships

Thesaban tambon are the lowest municipality level. Despite its name, it does not necessarily be the same area as a tambon, it may cover a tambon incompletely, or may also extend over parts of more than one tambon.

For an area to qualify to establish as a village municipality, it needs a gross income of at least 5 million baht, a population of 5000, a population density of 1,500 per km², and the censensus of the population of the area.

Most of the current township municipalities were originally sanitation districts (sukhaphiban), which were all converted into township municipalities in May 1999, even though many of these did actually not meet the above qualifications.

  5. Interesting to see how he intends to be an owner of the freehold rights to the land though. Secondly he is rumoured to have requested some extras for his new home to maintain his reputation.

The first is an electronic automated pulse read out for all female visitors passing through his front door and the second is a defibrillator for those that show no reading from the first.

It's a Condo so he does not have a problem with land ownership.

  6. I'm going back to Samui in about 10 days after a space of 10 years and was wondering if there is a cinema on the island. My GF wants to see the new Fatastic 4 film and was hoping we could catch it while there.

Also does anyone know what the Utopia Resort is like at Lamai. Last time I stayed at the Lamai Inn which is now Lamai Inn 99 I believe. Was a good location for me and I think the Utopia is not too far from there.

You can check the schedule by calling 077 427 299 and if you are very lucky they might possibly tell you the correct times - if they know them, which from my recent experience on more than one occassion they did not. On a recent Saturday we asked for the times on Sunday and none of the staff could tell us - we called the above number on Sunday afternoon and were given a time which when we got there was wrong!

  7. Very advantageous position - you the pilot or a hi-jacker?

    Right place - right time!

I have a few aerials of KS and KP if anyone is interested in me posting them.

Not too many as there was a bit of vibration so only some came out clearly.

    Bangrak - Bophut - Chaweng -

    Would love to see them

    Your wish is my command!

Great photos SamuiRes', just when where these takin'? :o

  9. by law the owner has to pay them 3 months salary if he wishes to close.

    Nearly right!

    • Severance Pay: Employees who have worked more than 120 days, but less than one year, are entitled to 30 days severance pay. For personnel employed between one and three years, the severance pay is not less than 90 days pay. Employees with three to six years of service will receive six months salary, those with more than six to 10 years service will receive eight months salary, and employees with more than 10 years service will receive 10 months salary.

  10. Heres another one

When people where booking a cabin on a transatlantic crossing departing from England they would ask for a cabin that was

    Portside Outward Starboard Homebound

these people became known as POSH

    MM

P.S. tried the elbow licking, no where near.

Nearly right! It was actually P&O where this started with passengers booked through the Red Sea to India. Going out, the Starboard side was the hottest and coming back the Port side was hottest and being before ships were air conditioned this meant that the more comfortable cabins were Port out - Starboard home - they were therefore also the most expensive so only available to the richer passengers - hence they were the POSH ones.

  11. I hope I can be proven wrong, but :

Why would the local administration relinquish power, city status a different type of local admin.

Why would the mainland be so easy going, as to let go of it's gravy train.

    Two points to ponder upon.

I believe that the local population and administration would welcome City Status as it would give them greater standing and control over the funding.

I think that the second point is much more relevant and would be the difficult one to get round without significant support from Bangkok.

  12. please let me know the directions........someone who wrote about Mackro the other day.....but the thread is removed....wonder why since everybody else can talk about good restaurants etc.......

Anyway,Im not on the Island now, but will soon go, so please inform me how to go there, thanks

Chaweng - pass Tesco going north towards Bophut and its a few hundred metres on the right hand side.

    Open now.

  13. There has been talk for a long time about the possibility of Koh Samui achieving City status with the apparent consequence of retaining more revenue generated here to improve the infrastructure. This has been pushed recently by the Samui Community Newspaper (15 March - 15 April) stating that it only needs 577 more registered citizens to reach the magic 50,000 number which is the minimum required.

However, I have also seen it reported that 50,000 is only part of the equation and that the population density has to be 3,000 per sq km. Samui is ca 229 sq km which only gives a density of 218 per sq km so winning part of the battle may not be enough, and you can be sure that the authorities in Surat Thani will find any reason they can to prevent this happening.

Does anyone else have any other information to confirm or refute this or have any reliable information on this subject?
