  2. A significant reduction in Thailand’s sugarcane yield in the 2023–24 crop year has been reported by the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB). This decrease in production is attributed to severe drought conditions and is expected to have an impact on the worldwide sugar supply. Thailand is the second-largest exporter of sugar globally, following Brazil. Therefore, any decrease in its production could cause strain on the global market. A representative of the farmers on the board, Verasak Kwanmuang, revealed that sugarcane harvests had decreased by 11.7 million tonnes from the previous crop year, with an output of 93.9 million tonnes. The total amount of cane delivered by farmers to sugar factories for crushing in the 2023–24 crop year was 82.2 million tonnes. Of this, 70% was comprised of fresh sugar cane, and the remaining 30% was burned cane. Verasak explained that drought conditions had led to water shortages, severely affecting the sugarcane plantations. The 2023-24 crop year saw 57 sugar mills generating 8.77 million tonnes of sugar and 3.55 tonnes of molasses. Each tonne of sugar cane produced 107 kilogrammes of sugar, with a commercial cane sugar sweetness index of 12.35. The OCSB noted that global sugar prices have seen a dip, falling to 19 cents per pound from 25 cents. This decrease was due to an increase in cane supplies from Brazil and India during a period of sluggish global economy and reduced sugar demand. The board voiced its concerns that a continued decrease or stagnation in global prices will impact the calculation of sugar prices for the 2024–25 crop year. These prices are currently projected to be within the range of 25.31–27.35 cents per pound. The final estimate of prices may fluctuate, said Verasak. “This will impact domestic sugar prices and the contributions to the sugar cane fund, which is already grappling with liquidity issues. It will also affect sugar factory owners.” The OCSB is hopeful of an increase in sugar cane production for the 2024–25 crop year. This is due to the likelihood of farmers shifting from cassava cultivation to sugar cane farming, driven by the higher price of the latter, reported Bangkok Post. 3. Plant-based meat popularity fuels new ventures in Thailand PHOTO VIA:Jeff Vinluan FROM:Pexels.com The appeal of plant-based meat production continues to rise as companies recognise the lucrative potential of this burgeoning sector. 4. The appeal of plant-based meat production continues to rise as companies recognise the lucrative potential of this burgeoning sector. The opportunity to tap into a new revenue stream and cater to health-conscious consumers has led to collaborations between local entrepreneurs, scientists, and international firms, said Buranin Rattanasombat, the senior executive vice-president for new business and infrastructure at PTT Plc. “In Thailand, a joint venture between local and British companies has led to the establishment of a new plant-based food production facility. The country’s abundance of raw materials makes it an ideal location for such ventures.” The joint venture, Nutra Regenerative Protein Co., is a collaboration between Innobic (Asia), PTT’s life sciences arm, and Nove Foods Co., a subsidiary of SET-listed NR Instant Produce. The companies partnered with UK-based Plant and Bean to form a new company, Plant and Bean (Thailand), dedicated to the operation of the new factory in Ayutthaya. The new company aims to become a major global plant-based food manufacturer, selling products both domestically and internationally. Thailand’s lower plant-based protein manufacturing costs compared to the European Union make it an attractive investment location. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has increased costs for many plant-based meat manufacturers, making Thailand a prime option for relocation. Profit potential Plant and Bean (Thailand) is confident about the profit potential in this industry, especially considering the global market value of plant-based products will hit US$13 billion in 2022, with the US accounting for 75% of consumers. Local sugar producer, Mitr Phol Group, also entered the plant-based meat sector, investing in food technology startup, Meat Avatar Co. The company seeks to add value to agricultural products through high technology, expanding its revenue streams. Plant and Bean (Thailand) anticipates numerous business opportunities as several foreign food firms express interest in joint operations. Notably, US fast food chain Texas Chicken has partnered with the company to introduce plant-based food to its menu, targeting younger consumers. The company plans to produce both ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat food with similar characteristics to real meat. The factory in Ayutthaya is designed to have an annual production capacity of 3,000 tonnes, with plans to increase it to 13,000 tonnes in two years through a 400 million baht investment. Mitr Phol and Meat Avatar also aim to offer a wide array of plant-based meats to satisfy diverse consumer tastes. Both companies have a vision to be leaders in the industry and support Thai farmers by adding value to their produce. The demand for plant-based protein is expected to increase as health-conscious consumers seek affordable options. Prices for plant-based food range from 100 to 110 per kilogramme, similar to premium pork prices in Bangkok. However, plant-based food offers a higher protein content, making it a cost-effective choice for consumers. Plant and Bean (Thailand) plans to ensure its products are free from genetically modified organisms. In line with the global campaign against climate change, the company’s factory utilises clean energy from rooftop solar panels in its manufacturing process. A manufacturer of cassava-based products, UBE has announced its intention to develop new food products in line with health trends. In collaboration with experts from Chulalongkorn University, UBE aims to develop innovative food that better matches consumer demands, reported Bangkok Post. 8. Police are searching for the gunman who shot dead a 10 year old girl on a palm plantation in the southern province of Krabi. The girl’s family believes the shooting was motivated by a dispute over land concessions. The fatal shooting took place in a palm plantation in the Khao Panom district of Krabi at about 8pm on Wednesday, April 17. The deceased, 10 year old Neeranuch “Mai” Narkwong, was shot in the back of her neck and died upon arrival at the hospital. Mai’s aunt told ThaiRath that five children, including Mai, were playing together outside a hut on the palm plantation when the incident occurred. The aunt said she heard several gunshots and saw Mai collapse. She rushed to carry Mai while other children crouched on the ground in fear. According to the aunt, the gunman committed the crime alone and fled the scene on foot, as she did not hear the sound of a motorcycle or car engine. She was unable to determine the direction in which the perpetrator had gone. The aunt further explained that Mai and her parents had moved into the hut six to seven months prior. The land on which they resided belonged to the Royal Forest Department, and Mai’s family held a concession to operate a palm plantation. As the concession was nearing expiration, Mai’s family faced the prospect of losing their livelihood. Consequently, they remained on the plantation, hoping to appeal to officials to renew their concession. Mai’s family was not the sole local community in need of the land. Others also sought the concession, leading Mai’s family to believe that this could have been the motive behind the shooting. Khao Panom Police Station officers investigated the shooting scene and found nine bullet holes on a cottage wall. Police estimated that the gunman was approximately 10 to 15 metres away from the cottage when firing the shots. However, they had not yet uncovered any substantial evidence to ascertain the identity of the gunman. Officers surmised that the perpetrator did not have lethal intentions and merely sought to intimidate Mai’s family. Police announced their intention to summon Mai’s parents and relatives for questioning at a later time. 10. Chiang Mai police apprehended two suspects in a brazen theft that saw 76 million baht stolen from a home. Police recovered nearly 40 million baht in cash, revealing that the culprits were known associates of the victim, motivated by a dispute over incomplete payment for work done. Other stolen assets were discarded in black bags. The incident, which occurred on April 11 in the luxurious residential area of Mae Hia, Mueang Chiang Mai, saw the police engage in a meticulous investigation. They scrutinised surveillance footage from the escape route and locations where evidence was discarded, leading to a breakthrough in identifying the criminals. The suspects were involved in various high-profile businesses, including construction contracting and real estate trading that resulted in substantial financial gains. The progress of the case was unveiled at 9.30am today, by the Superintendent of Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station, Prachaya Thisala, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects. The apprehension occurred in the parking lot of a condominium in Tha Sala, Mueang Chiang Mai, and along the Mun Mueang Road in Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai yesterday around 12.30pm. The accused, 39 year old Phudis and 45 year old Adisak were found with evidence including 8 million baht hidden in a blue suitcase, and other amounts concealed in various containers and locations within a lodging house in Nong Pa Khrang, Mueang Chiang Mai, and a house in Suthep, Mueang Chiang Mai. The duo faces charges of joint theft in a dwelling at night, involving a breach of barriers meant to protect persons or property, with the use of a vehicle to facilitate the crime and evade capture. Million-worth assets The successful operation stemmed from a break-in at a posh residence in a gated community in Mae Hia, where the perpetrators made off with 38.7 million baht in cash, gold-framed amulets worth over 15 million baht, more than 300 significant amulets valued at 20 million baht, and other gold items worth over 1 million baht, totalling over 76 million baht in stolen assets. CCTV footage led the authorities to the suspects’ motorcycle and other escape routes, which ultimately resulted in the recovery of a significant portion of the hidden assets. Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to being well-acquainted with the victim’s house, as they had been doing business with the homeowner for over a decade. The victim, a contractor and well-known life coach on YouTube needed to keep large amounts of cash on hand for business transactions. The suspects, running a door lock business and having frequent financial disputes with the victim over the past two years, harboured a grudge that led to the theft, reported KhaoSod. While they kept the cash, they discarded the other valuables, such as the amulets and gold, in trash bags left on the street, which the police are now trying to recover through CCTV footage. Although not all the cash was recouped, as the suspects had already spent some on gold and a car, the investigation continues to locate the remaining assets to return them to the victim. Thai man allegedly fakes adultery story to extort money from couple Photo via Channel 7 A Thai man allegedly faked an adultery story to extort 5,000 baht from a couple in the central province of Ayutthaya. 18. A Thai man allegedly faked an adultery story to extort 5,000 baht from a couple in the central province of Ayutthaya. He even pretended to be a death threat victim and sought help from a Thai news agency. A 42 year old Thai man named New told Channel 7 that he worked at a rice harvester garage in the central province of Ayutthaya. A female customer of the garage, named Ood, confided in him, expressing suspicion that her husband of committing adultery with a female worker at the garage named Jang. New, another individual involved, stated that Ood hired him for 5,000 baht to investigate whether her husband was indeed having an affair with Jang. New confirmed that Ood’s husband was indeed committing adultery and disclosed this truth to Ood. Despite engaging in a heated argument, New mentioned that Ood ultimately forgave her husband. New further elaborated that Ood’s husband became enraged with him and physically attacked him at his workplace, resulting in a broken bone in his finger. Ood’s husband reportedly issued a death threat against New as well. New said he filed a complaint with Bang Lane Police Station but his case was ignored. New added that he decided to seek help from the media because he noticed a suspicious man on a motorcycle stalking him. He was worried about his safety. Adultery lie Ood told Channel 7 that what New said was a lie. She had never suspected her husband of committing adultery and never hired New to investigate her husband’s so-called secret relationship. Ood recounted that New approached her, alleging that her husband was involved in an affair with Jang. New proposed that Ood pay him 10,000 baht for further details. Initially sceptical, Ood eventually succumbed to New’s persuasion and paid him 5,000 baht. Subsequently, Ood confronted her husband directly and discovered that New’s claims were false. Her husband confessed to assaulting New, citing anger over New’s deception in coaxing money from Ood with a fabricated adultery tale. Ood’s husband insisted that the case went through the legal process and had already paid an 18,000 baht fine to the court on February 23. The case has already ended, and Ood’s husband insisted he had never issued a death threat to New. The accused mistress, Jang, also confirmed with Channel 7 that she had no romantic relationship with Ood’s husband. New’s fake story almost made her husband divorce her. She was also confident that the death threat was another lie from New. Jang suspected that New’s actions stemmed from her refusal to lend him money as she had done previously. New had borrowed money from her on multiple occasions, resulting in a total debt exceeding 10,000 baht. When New attempted to borrow an additional 1,000 baht from her and was denied, Jang speculated that New may have become angry and sought revenge. 22. The change in colour and odour of the tap water at a condominium in the Min Buri district of Bangkok led to the discovery of a dead Burmese man in a rooftop water tank early this morning. Residents alerted the condo’s owner about the slow flow of tap water, noting an unpleasant odour and a shift in its colour. The owner sent a technician to inspect the water tank that stored tap water for the residents on the rooftop where he discovered a dead body floating inside. The deceased was identified as a 27 year old Burmese man, Aung Su Nyat who lived on the fourth floor of the condo. He was found naked in the tank while his red sarong had nestled at the bottom. According to Thai PBS, Aung Su Nyat drank alcohol with his friends on the rooftop on April 17 before going missing. His friends told police that they separated from each other at about 11pm on the day while Aung Su Nyat remained on the rooftop with his daughter. The daughter, aged six years old, disclosed that Aung Su Nyat had mentioned feeling hot and jumped into the water tank. He later emerged and told her he felt unwell. The daughter then left the rooftop, leaving Aung Su Nyat alone. His family suspected that he might have returned to the water tank and drowned, possibly due to intoxication or cramps. The dead man’s wife revealed that her husband had been missing since Wednesday, April 17, and she looked for him everywhere. Overwhelmed with desperation, she resorted to praying to various supernatural spirits for assistance. According to ThaiRath, the majority of condominium residents were Burmese nationals employed at a nearby construction site. While some residents blamed the deceased for entering the tank, others expressed disgust at having used the water for nearly three days before the discovery of the body. Min Buri Police Station officers investigated the scene and planned to transfer Aung Su Nyat’s body to the hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
