Picture courtesy of KhaoSod The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) in Nonthaburi recently announced the arrest of Thammasorn, a 32-year-old fruit seller from Chon Buri, accused of distributing child pornography for profit. In a press briefing, Police Lieutenant General Trirong Phiwphan revealed details of the investigation, led by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (TICAC), that led to Thammasorn's apprehension. The investigation uncovered Thammasorn's activities on social media platforms, where he allegedly operated secret groups for illicit content distribution. Using the X application, formerly Twitter, under accounts called Nong Khaimuk (Secret Group) and Kai Whan (Secret Group), Thammasorn advertised access to adult content at discounted rates. Despite a prior arrest in January for similar offences, Thammasorn was found to have resumed these illegal activities. Once police gathered sufficient evidence, the Chon Buri Provincial Court issued a search warrant on April 25 for Thammasorn's residence in Baan Bueng district, where mobile phones and bank records were seized. Investigations revealed that Thammasorn created multiple secret groups on the Line app, charging memberships between 100 and 300 baht (US$3 to 9) for access to various pornographic content categories, including family and voyeuristic themes. Thammasorn reportedly confessed to restarting his operations two months ago, earning around 10,000 baht (US$300) monthly, which he claimed was used to cover legal fees following his previous arrest. He now faces charges for importing pornographic material into computer systems, possessing child pornography for sexual exploitation, and promoting its distribution. Thammasorn has been taken into custody at Ban Bueng Police Station, where legal proceedings are underway, marking a significant crackdown in the ongoing battle against online child exploitation. Thailand Fast-Tracks 20 Baht Flat Fare Policy for Electric Trains Picture courtesy of KhaoSod The Ministry of Transport in Thailand is intensifying its push to introduce a 20 baht flat fare for electric trains, aiming for full implementation by September 2025. Picture courtesy of KhaoSod The Ministry of Transport in Thailand is intensifying its push to introduce a 20 baht flat fare for electric trains, aiming for full implementation by September 2025. A crucial step in this process is the Cabinet's upcoming review of a new draft of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand Act, scheduled for deliberation in May. Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri explained that the ministry is currently refining the draft law, designed to update the existing legislation to meet current needs. This draft forms the backbone of the flat fare policy and will be tabled during a special parliamentary session from May 28 to May 30, alongside the 2026 budget bill. Anticipating the urgent need to enact the flat fare policy by September, the government has prioritised the Mass Rapid Transit Authority Act, among three other urgent bills from the Ministry of Transport. The draft includes mechanisms for compensating private sector fare differentials and addresses updates to related laws such as the Department of Rail Transport Act and the Common Ticket Act. The public feedback process, initiated on April 18, has been integral, allowing citizens, agencies, and commuters to provide input on the draft through the central legal system's website until May 2. These contributions will inform amendments before the draft's submission to the Cabinet, expected to be on their agenda between May 11 and May 13. The existing Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand Act, which dates back to 2000, contains outdated sections that impede development and operational efficiency. Proposed amendments will enhance asset management, facilitate integration with other transport systems, and expand operational authority regarding common ticketing schemes. Additionally, new revenue guidelines are poised to bolster essential operations and reinforce government initiatives. As Thailand accelerates these developments, the goal is a more streamlined, cost-effective public transport experience, underscoring the commitment to modernising its transport infrastructure for future needs. Picture courtesy of komchadluek Thai authorities are investigating the Five M 888 gang leader, known as Fluke, following serious allegations of assault and coercion involving two youths. Ekaphop Lueangprasert, founder of the Sai Mai Tong Rod Facebook page, facilitated the filing of a formal complaint against Fluke, alongside two victims: a 19-year-old student and a 15-year-old girl. The complaint accuses Fluke, 23, from Samut Prakan, of posing as a police officer to intimidate and coerce his victims. The gang is infamous for its violent mimicry of the Oreo gang's tactics, including assault, forced drug use, and humiliating acts captured on camera. Video evidence of these acts was presented to Police Colonel Chakrit Srirojanakul at the Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station. Victims allege that Fluke, with an associate called Ta Oreo, orchestrated severe attacks and coerced participation in degrading acts. These include forced cannabis smoking followed by physical assaults and coerced performances on camera for blackmail purposes. The assaults often escalated from non-compliance with Fluke's demands. In one incident, the 15-year-old victim described being tricked into attending a birthday party for Fluke, only to be assaulted and filmed, with Fluke threatening to distribute the footage should she report the incident. Meanwhile, the 19-year-old male victim, initially intrigued by the group's activities, found himself abused and severely humiliated on video, prompting him to seek refuge through the Sai Mai Tong Rod page. Police Colonel Chakrit has confirmed the existence of video evidence and denied any legitimate police affiliation for Fluke, emphasizing that the case is a priority due to its severity and societal impact. The involvement in statutory rape and coercive sexual misconduct is under thorough scrutiny, and charges could extend to computer crime law violations given the online sharing of recorded assaults. Authorities aim for swift justice as the actions of the Five M 888 gang are not only criminally suspect but also pose a broader societal threat, underscoring the urgent need for legal and community intervention. Thailand's 500 Billion Baht Borrowing Plan Criticised Amid Tariff Crisis File photo for reference only Amid plans to borrow 500 billion baht to boost Thailand's economy facing a US tariff crisis, former finance minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala has urged caution, citing potential pitfalls in the government's strategy. As reported by Naewna newspaper, Thirachai cautioned against overselling the notion of "turning a crisis into an opportunity" without considering the long-term implications for Thai citizens. File photo for reference only Amid plans to borrow 500 billion baht to boost Thailand's economy facing a US tariff crisis, former finance minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala has urged caution, citing potential pitfalls in the government's strategy. As reported by Naewna newspaper, Thirachai cautioned against overselling the notion of "turning a crisis into an opportunity" without considering the long-term implications for Thai citizens. Thirachai highlights that the borrowing aligns with the International Monetary Fund’s gloomy GDP forecast, reducing expectations for 2024 and 2025. The proposed borrowing would further inflate public debt, already at 10.69 trillion baht, equating to a per capita debt burden of 160,000 baht. In his statement, Thirachai outlined five critical areas of concern: Temporary Consumption Boost: He warned that distributing cash to spur consumption might temporarily lift GDP figures but won't sustain economic growth or income needed to repay the debt, given the underwhelming impact of previous cash handout projects. Prudent Budget Utilisation: The government should prioritise using budgetary funds, cutting unnecessary or non-urgent expenditures, before resorting to borrowing. Monetary Strategy Discussions: A dialogue between the Finance Ministry and Bank of Thailand is necessary, focusing on easing monetary policies, boosting financial competition, serious debt restructuring, and reducing interest margins. Reassessment of Cash Handout Scheme: Thirachai suggests cancelling the third phase of the 10,000-baht cash handout due to global uncertainties, proposing that fiscal resources be conserved for emergency situations. Economic Restructuring for Future Growth: Proposals include enhancing education, AI adoption, skill development, and fostering regional trade collaborations to increase economic potential. Thirachai's critique underscores concerns that government policies might inadvertently benefit politically connected capitalists rather than the broader populace. As Thailand navigates the dual pressures of international trade dynamics and domestic economic hurdles, the call is for vigilant public oversight of governmental fiscal actions. Photo courtesy of Human Rights Watch The plight of seven Uyghur detainees in Thailand has drawn significant attention from the People’s Empowerment Foundation, with chairperson Chalida Tajaroensuk voicing serious concerns. Split into two groups, these individuals are caught in complex legal battles concerning their future and potential deportation to China. Five of the detained Uyghurs, initially apprehended after fleeing the Mukdahan detention centre in 2020, are currently serving six-year sentences at Bangkok's Klongprem Central Prison. Chalida, who recently assessed their condition, confirms the group's resistance to deportation and notes ongoing efforts to secure third-country resettlement with assistance from engaged embassies. With only a year left on their sentences, Chalida plans to visit next month to further discuss their needs. The other two individuals remain in Bangkok Remand Prison, facing charges linked to the 2015 Erawan Shrine bombing. Their legal proceedings are slated for continuation next month, with case conclusions targeted by year's end. Despite the severe allegations, the suspects seek to maintain their trial status as a means to avoid deportation. Their case remains sensitive, with no embassies engaging in resettlement discussions, partly due to the nature of the charges. Both groups of Uyghurs express a clear preference for imprisonment in Thailand over possible deportation to China, where they fear persecution. The situation draws attention from Fair List Party list-MP Kannavee Suebsang, who is pursuing options for resettlement for those at Klongprem but has refrained from commenting on the bombing case due to ongoing court proceedings. Historically, of 43 Uyghurs detained in Thailand's Suan Phlu Immigration Centre, 40 have been deported to China, while three possessing Kyrgyzstan passports were successfully resettled in Canada. This backdrop underscores the urgency and complexity surrounding the current detainees' situations, prompting ongoing international and local efforts to secure their futures. Among these, tourists from China made up a significant portion, numbering 1.6 million. Despite recent challenges, including a substantial earthquake in Myanmar affecting Bangkok, Thailand remains optimistic, sticking to its forecast of 38 million foreign arrivals for the year. However, industry insiders caution that Thailand could lose its competitive edge if it doesn't quickly adapt to China's bold tax policy enhancements. Notably, China is enticing more tourist spending by offering a generous 13% refund rate on tax-free shopping. This move may shift tourist preferences, prompting Thailand to assess its strategies to ensure it remains an attractive destination. As the country balances current influxes with potential future constraints, the focus is on maintaining a thriving tourist industry capable of competing on the global stage. The next few months will be critical in determining how Thailand can address these competitive challenges and continue to draw visitors to its shores. Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) in Thailand will unveil a new e-ticket system on 15 October across six key marine national parks, ushering in this year's tourist season. This initiative seeks to enhance transparency in entrance fee collection, aiming to increase park revenue by 10%. During a press conference, Director-General Attapol Charoenchansa addressed longstanding corruption concerns within the ticketing process. Following a trial run since 2023 plagued by usability issues, the revamped system promises user-friendliness even in remote areas. Initially available in select marine parks, the programme has plans for expansion to the top national parks. The revenue from entrance fees significantly supports forest conservation and tourism sustainability. Currently, income distribution designates 5% to local administrative organisations, 20% to individual park management, 60% to conservation, and 15% reserves for emergencies. Between October 1 and April 20, Thai national parks recorded a visitor increase of 2.36%, contributing to a 2.6% rise in revenue totalling 1.55 billion baht. Notably, marine parks made up almost 66% of these earnings, with Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park leading at 450 million baht. The e-ticket system aims to curb revenue losses and corruption. Attapol highlighted the importance of this income for their conservation mission and sustainable tourism advocacy. Future ambitions include using additional revenue to support communities within forest zones. The new e-ticket roll-out will commence with marine parks such as Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi (Krabi), Ao Phang Nga (Phang Nga), and others, marking a significant step forward in Thailand’s commitment to preserving its natural treasures. The footage, widely circulated on social media, depicted the tourist performing hazardous wheelies and weaving through traffic on a Honda Click 160, causing significant risk to others on the busy road late Sunday night. The brazen display prompted furious calls from the community for action. "He was having the time of his life, but no one else was," lamented a local witness, emphasising the menace and disrespect the tourist's actions posed. Authorities from the Chalong Police Station swiftly responded, successfully apprehending Mr Daherwalid following a concerted effort by patrol and traffic units. The motorcycle's owner was also summoned to aid the investigation. Consequently, the motorcycle has been impounded, and Mr Daherwalid is now facing serious charges for reckless driving that endangered public safety. The incident underscores Thailand's firm stance that foreign tourists are subject to the nation's laws. "Tourists are welcome but stunts like these are not," stated a Chalong Police officer. The incident, occurring today, has intensified demands for stricter measures against unruly tourist conduct as the nudist escapade unfolded before bewildered onlookers and involved police intervention. The couple, identified as Mr Michal, 27, and Ms Claudia, 24, stunned passers-by when spotted standing unabashedly nude on a public road, seemingly heedless of traffic. Their audacious display prompted locals to notify authorities, who engaged police forces that soon arrived to confront the brazen tourists. Yet, the couple's exhibitionist antics continued shortly after, as they lounged naked on Ban Kai Beach, astonishing families enjoying the sunshine. Authorities swiftly instructed them to cover up, arresting the individuals under Thai law forbidding public indecency. Transported to Koh Pha Ngan Police Station, the couple now face charges of public obscenity. However, their escapade is not an isolated incident, as similar tourist misbehaviour has left locals increasingly fed up. Eury, who was severely injured in a night-time crash with a motorbike in Phuket, has been discharged from the hospital but remains medically frail and incapable of returning to the UK due to outstanding health challenges. The accident saw Eury, 39, sustain a fractured skull, brain bleed, shattered nose, and broken ribs. Shockingly, his travel insurance had lapsed just a day before the incident, leaving him with daunting medical expenses exceeding £30,000. Hit by a Yamaha XMAX driven by a Russian couple, Sergei and Svetlana Medvedev, Eury's ordeal has resonated deeply with both the local and British communities. Friends and family are anguished at the geographical and financial distance separating them from Eury, whose culinary passion and Bristolian roots have fostered significant support. A fundraising campaign for his medical expenses has impressively raised over £30,000. Additionally, a benefit night is planned in Bristol next month to compound the efforts in bringing him back home. Eury's father highlights his relentless dedication to combining fitness and culinary excellence, a commitment now echoed by friends and supporters rallying for his recovery and eventual homecoming. Though daunting, the Bristol food and fight communities remain hopeful, united in their mission to see Ricky back on his feet and thriving once more. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-04-29

File photo for reference only The runway at Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province has been illuminated and is set to facilitate test flights ahead of its April 30 deadline. The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) announced that the newly activated lighting system, featuring advanced LED technology from Europe, has passed trial operations and is now test-ready. This cutting-edge lighting system adheres to the highest international aviation standards. It is integrated with an Instrument Landing System/Distance Measuring Equipment (ILS/DME) to ensure precise aircraft landings, even in adverse weather conditions. The combination of these technologies enhances the airport's capability to provide safe and reliable operations. To bring this project to fruition, ACV coordinated the efforts of 1,025 personnel, 243 pieces of equipment, and 30 construction teams, all focused on installing systems essential for the stable and secure operation of the airport. ACV emphasized that the successful activation of the lighting system marks a crucial milestone, confirming the runway's readiness for test flights by the end of April as planned. Spanning 5,000 hectares and with an estimated cost of VND336.6 trillion (approximately US$14 billion), Long Thanh International Airport is poised to become Vietnam's largest airport, replacing Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. The first phase, expected to be completed by 2026, includes constructing a runway, a passenger terminal, and facilities to handle 25 million passengers annually. The first runway, at 4 km long and 70 meters wide, is designed to accommodate the latest aircraft models, forming part of a comprehensive VND7 trillion package. This package also covers taxiways, rapid exit taxiways, aircraft aprons, and service vehicle aprons, underscoring the project's scale and ambition in transforming Vietnam's aviation landscape.
