People walk through the annual year-end illumination in Roppongi district | Photo via AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko By Ryan Turner Japan’s rise as a favoured tourist destination over Thailand is attributed to a weaker currency and its preparedness to welcome independent travellers. In response, tourism operators in Thailand are urging the government to enhance attractions and improve service quality to achieve the target of 40 million visitors. For the first eleven months of this year, Japan received over 33.3 million foreign visitors, surpassing its previous record of 31.8 million in 2019, despite implementing measures against overtourism. Meanwhile, Thailand welcomed 32 million tourists during the same timeframe. Japan anticipates closing this year with 35 million visitors, matching Thailand’s figures, although, in 2019, Thailand attracted nearly 10 million more tourists than Japan’s projected figures. Adith Chairattananon, the honorary secretary-general of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, highlighted that Japan’s cities, both major and secondary, offer better facilities for independent tourists. These include excellent rail connectivity, safety, cleanliness, and an array of attractions. Adith noted that the number of Thai tourists travelling to Japan surged to 1.3 million in 2019, up from around 400,000 when the visa requirement for Thais was lifted. There’s potential to reach 2 million in the coming years. Japan continues to be a popular choice for Chinese tourists, despite the need for a visa. Should the visa requirement be removed, it could challenge Thailand’s status as a leading destination for Chinese tourists, alongside Macau and Hong Kong. Cohesive tourism marketing Adith pointed out that Japan’s tourism marketing is cohesive, with efforts aligned from the national government down to local agencies. Provincial tourism bodies actively participate in international travel fairs, such as the Thai International Travel Fair organised by the Thai Travel Agents Association. Despite Thailand’s appeal with its natural attractions, warm hospitality, and rich culture, foreign tour operators observe a lack of new selling points. Adith sees potential for Thailand to develop new attractions and improve transportation to meet international standards, as well as employing creative strategies to attract tourists. He referenced the Black Myth: Wukong online game’s success in China, which spurred domestic tourism to locations featured in the game. Visitors sought to collect in-game items, illustrating the power of creative marketing. La-iad Bungsrithong, a board advisor for the Thai Hotels Association, commented on the growing competition and noted that Chiang Mai and Thailand are no longer top priorities for foreign tourists, highlighting the need for innovative development to add value. Currently, tourism operators in Chiang Mai are concentrating on enhancing key events like the Flower Festival in February and Loy Krathong in November, alongside improvements to facilities, reported Bangkok Post. File photo for reference only The Thai baht is forecasted to weaken, reaching 34.50 to the US dollar by the end of this year and sliding further to 35.50 in 2025, according to Kasikorn Research Centre (K-Research). This comes amid new US policies expected to pressure the Chinese yuan. The baht, currently at a three-month low of 34.61, fell after the US dollar strengthened following a 25 basis points interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve. The Bank of Thailand has kept its policy rate unchanged at 2.25% as of December 18. Kanjana Chockpisansin from K-Research said, “Despite the Fed's rate cut, a strong US outlook has bolstered the dollar, weakening Asian currencies, including the baht.” The Fed now predicts only two rate cuts next year, down from four earlier, aligning Thai expectations to see two cuts in 2025. As of 2023, the baht dropped by 1.2%, while the Chinese yuan and Japanese yen fell by 2.7% and 9.3%. The South Korean won saw the biggest decline at 11%, whereas the Malaysian ringgit gained 2%. Next year, the yuan is expected to further weaken with China's slowing economy and potential US trade impacts. K-Research foresees the baht ending at 35.50 to the dollar in 2025. Recent market changes include a drop in Thai stocks and a weakening yen amid unchanged borrowing costs in Japan. Gold prices dipped to nearly US$2,600 per ounce, while Bitcoin remained stable above US$100,000. Economist Pipat Luengnaruemitchai predicts the Bank of Thailand will make three rate cuts in 2025, reducing policy rates to levels from 2015-2018, aiming to ease financial conditions amid inflation and slowing domestic demand. -- 2024-12-20

Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Police have detained three young men following a violent assault and kidnapping for ransom involving a local businessman in Kalasin province. The incident occurred after he had attended a retro dance event in Kalasin province. Police are actively pursuing two additional suspects, one identified as the group’s ringleader. Police in Kalasin yesterday, December 19, arrested three individuals connected to the incident and presented them before the provincial court. Those apprehended include 26 year old Narupon, 39 year old Khajonsak, and 26 year old Surachai. They face five serious charges, including grievous bodily harm and illegal possession and use of firearms in public. The charges also encompass unlawful detention for ransom, with the group demanding 10 million baht for the 36 year old businessman, Thirawut’s release. The violent episode unfolded in the early hours of December 15. Thirawut was on a motorcycle with a friend when they encountered the suspects at a junction in the Non Laem Thong subdistrict. A verbal confrontation ensued, after which the suspects violently assaulted Thirawut and fired warning shots. His friend, who attempted to intervene, was threatened, allowing the suspects to abduct Thirawut in a pickup truck, leaving the motorcycle behind. By morning, Thirawut’s family, unable to reach him, reported the businessman’s disappearance to the Sahatsakhan police. Shortly after, they received a ransom demand call from the kidnappers. The police, in collaboration with local community leaders, launched a search operation, eventually locating Thirawut and transporting him to the hospital for treatment. An investigative team quickly identified five individuals involved in the crime. “The initial investigation indicated the presence of five perpetrators,” said Police Colonel Man Siri-Chai, leading the investigation. “The captured suspects claimed they were at the scene but denied participating in the assault.” Efforts are now focused on capturing the two remaining suspects, 34 year old Pongpisit and 26 year old Sirawut. Pongpisit is believed to be the mastermind behind the attack. The court has issued arrest warrants, and police have intensified their search efforts, reported KhaoSod. “We urge the two fugitives to surrender themselves to the police.” Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-20

Photo via ThaiRath By Petch Petpailin A 78 year old Thai man from Chon Buri, popularly known as the “Elvis of Thailand,” shared his unconventional tips for looking younger in a TikTok video showing him using duct tape to lift his face. The TikTok channel, @elvisthailand, was created by Somsak’s granddaughter to share his story and showcase how he remains fit and firm at his age. A recent video, which attracted significant attention from Thai netizens and news outlets, features Somsak’s unique method for maintaining a younger appearance. The video was uploaded on Sunday, December 15, with a caption… “The secret of a firm face revealed. Folk wisdom. Do not copy!” In the clip, Somsak is seen carefully applying yellow duct tape to his face, pulling it tight to achieve a lifting effect. He revealed to his granddaughter that he has been using this method for about two years. Initially, Somsak’s grandchildren, including the creator of the TikTok channel, urged him to stop using duct tape, citing potential risks. However, they later changed their minds after seeing the results of his strange face-lifting technique. In addition to using duct tape, Elvis of Thailand also credits dietary supplements and skin care products recommended by his grandchildren to maintain appearance. His granddaughter, however, cautioned viewers against copying the method, warning that the adhesive and chemicals in the tape could cause allergic reactions or skin irritation. She noted that Somsak himself occasionally experienced discomfort from the tape. One Thai woman commented on the video, sharing that she had seen a foreign TikTok user employing a similar technique, but with medical-grade tape. She expressed interest in trying the method herself. In an interview with Sanook, Somsak revealed that he got the idea to use duct tape for face-lifting while fixing his car. Impressed by the tape’s strong adhesive properties, he decided to experiment with it on his face. Somsak emphasised that duct tape alone is not responsible for his younger appearance. He also maintains a regular exercise routine, working out three to four times a week at his home gym. Additionally, he proudly displayed awards he won from singing contests and beauty pageants. Somsak expressed his delight at the attention and admiration he received from netizens. He stated that the appreciation from others validates the effort he has put into taking care of himself throughout his life. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-20

Photo courtesy of Riau Pos By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Move over, rivals! Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has stormed ahead in the political popularity race, clinching the top spot in a nationwide survey that crowned her Politician of the Year 2024. The North Bangkok Poll, conducted by North Bangkok University between December 10 and 15, asked 1,500 respondents from across Thailand a simple but telling question: “Who do you think deserves to be honoured as the Politician of the Year 2024?” The results were announced today by Associate Professor Sanit Sirivisithkul, head of the university’s Public Opinion Survey Centre. PM Paetongtarn left her competition in the dust with an impressive 15.4% of the vote, showcasing her broad appeal and strong public support. Trailing behind was Deputy PM Phumtham Wechayachai with 7.8%, and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit at 7.5%. The rest of the list featured familiar faces such as People’s Party deputy leader Sirikanya Tansakul (7.3%) and Bangkok MP Rukchanok Srinork (6.8%), but none came close to Paetongtarn’s landslide. The survey highlighted the public’s admiration for the Thai premier’s leadership during a challenging year. “Her policies and charisma have clearly resonated with voters,” remarked Sanit, adding that the poll reflects “a clear signal of who the public feels has truly delivered.” Other notable names in the rankings include Rangsiman Rome (5.3%), Anutin Charnvirakul (4.1%), and veteran politician Prawit Wongsuwan, whose 1.3% suggested a significant dip in his influence, reported The Nation. File photo for reference only A Thai woman named Kanokratda has been arrested for allegedly running a fraudulent investment scheme through her Facebook group, amassing losses of around 300 million baht. The scam involved enticing people to invest in gold savings, promising 96.5% gold at prices much lower than market rates, but many investors received nothing in return. The scam caught attention in January when victims first complained at Bang Pa-in Police Station. It was discovered that Kanokratda, 37, was using her Facebook group "บ้านออมทองเจ๊แหม่ม" to post pictures and messages depicting cash purchases of gold to build trust. The attractive offer of gold priced 3,000 to 4,000 baht below market rates drew in many investors, primarily from a factory in Bang Pa-in, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. Those who referred others received a 500 baht commission. By December, about 20 victims reported not receiving their gold or returns, prompting an investigation. Kanokratda was arrested while heading to work in Pathum Thani. One of the victims, Patcharaporn, expressed her betrayal, having invested life insurance and funeral funds from her late father in the scheme. Patcharaporn had initially made small profits, but as trust grew, she invested more, only to lose over 41 baht worth of gold. The scam's collapse came when communication stopped in December, revealing nationwide damages close to 300 million baht. Patcharaporn shared her disappointment and rumours that Kanokratda used the money to buy assets for a former partner. In her defense, Kanokratda claimed no intent to deceive and mentioned the funds were used to pay existing investors, but a surge in withdrawals over New Year led to financial collapse. Police Colonel Direk Potipan compared the scheme to a pyramid scheme, urging the public to be wary of quick profit offers on social media. With 16 complaints filed and more victims expected to come forward, the investigation continues. -- 2024-12-20

File photo for reference only Police launched Operation STOP POLLUTION THE SERIES 3, targeting scrap shops on On Nut's waste alley in Bangkok for causing pollution with foul odors. Acting on complaints from locals in Phra Khanong, they addressed improper waste management and air pollution concerns. Led by the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division (NREC), officers arrested 10 shop owners for running health-hazardous businesses without permission. These actions violate the Public Health Act and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration regulations as the shops accumulated dangerous waste. Residents had complained about the pervasive stench and health risks from unsightly waste that attracted insects. Waste had also contaminated local waterways with bacteria and toxic substances, according to senior NREC officer Arune. The operation covered 20 locations, revealing extensive roadside rubbish. Of the 20 businesses inspected, 14 operated without licenses, five had permits, and one was shut during the raid, reported KhaoSod. Improper waste storage led to foul odors and attracted pests. Arrested shop owners confessed to buying, storing, and selling waste without proper management or licenses. They now face legal proceedings by the NREC. -- 2024-12-20

File photo for reference only In a remarkable crackdown, cyber police have arrested a 37-year-old man for allegedly operating a YouTube channel that profited from selling gun barrels and firearms online. The suspect, known as Chaiyut, was nabbed during a decisive raid in Tha Som, Hua Sai district, Nakhon Si Thammarat, after authorities obtained a search warrant from the Pak Phanang Provincial Court. The investigation, led by Trairong Piwpan from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, was sparked by online surveillance that revealed illicit transactions involving rifled gun barrels through a YouTube account named "ตนมี ฝีมือ." Undercover officers engaged with the seller, confirming the illegal activity by purchasing a gun barrel and tracing the transaction back to Chaiyut. Upon the raid, police discovered four methamphetamine pills on Chaiyut, as well as a significant stash of firearms and ammunition at his residence. Chaiyut, who was apprehended at his workplace, a flood relief site, defended his arsenal by claiming it was for self-defence. His spouse, Busaya, confirmed the couple's possession of the weapons during a search of their home, which uncovered the illegal cache. The search of Chaiyut’s vehicle revealed a 9mm blank-firing gun, further cementing suspicions of his illegal activities. Moreover, deeper investigation into Chaiyut's mobile communications exposed more damning evidence, highlighting his involvement in purchasing modified firearms capable of firing live rounds through the LINE app. Chaiyut confessed to his interest in collecting weapons for personal protection but vigorously denied ownership of the drugs, implicating a shrimp worker named Nan instead. Chaiyut faces serious charges, including the illegal possession of unregistered firearms and narcotics. The suspect and the seized contraband are now in the hands of Bangnob Police Station investigators as the case unfolds. -- 2024-12-20
