  1. Picture courtesy of KhaoSod By Bright Choomanee A tragic incident unfolded in Chumphon, as a prominent local businessman succumbed to electrocution while attempting to pump water out of his flooded home. The entrepreneur, who owned multiple petrol stations, was deeply mourned by his employees, who regarded him as a father figure. Yesterday, December 18, police and emergency services received reports of an unconscious man at a residence adjacent to a goods warehouse in Bang Luek, Chumphon. Police were informed by Thanakan Thubkham, a police investigator, who coordinated efforts with Viratchasilp Hospital’s emergency team to assist. Upon arrival, responders faced challenges accessing the single-storey, white-painted house due to floodwaters reaching a depth of approximately 80 centimetres. Efforts were made to cut off the electricity supply before navigating the flooded area with a specialised vehicle. Inside, they discovered a man wearing a long-sleeved white shirt over a blue T-shirt and black shorts, lying unconscious. Immediate CPR was performed in an attempt to revive him. The individual was later identified as 61 year old Sujin Bussabarn, also known as Nai Hua Muk. Despite being quickly transported to Chumphon Khet Udomsak Hospital, he unfortunately passed away before reaching the medical facility. Anurak Khao Chankhong, an emergency vehicle driver, remarked on the difficulty of reaching the scene due to the high water levels and slippery conditions within the house, which necessitated extreme caution. Sasithorn, head of the emergency medical services department, explained that Sujin was electrocuted and submerged while repairing a water pump amidst the flooding inside his home. Electrocution accident When family members found him unconscious, the water level was above knee height, complicating rescue efforts. Athip Ponsinthuchai, another emergency medical worker, highlighted the presence of flashing lights surrounding the house, which required the electricity to be cut off before entering the premises to ensure safety from potential electric currents. Employees at Sujin’s petrol stations spoke warmly of him, describing him as a kind-hearted person whose generosity extended to both his staff and his partner. They expressed profound sorrow over his death, emphasising the significant loss of someone they considered akin to a second father. Police investigations, led by Thanakan, revealed that Sujin was using a pump to remove water from his property when an electrical short circuit occurred, causing his electrocution and subsequent unconsciousness. Thorough evidence collection was conducted at the scene to determine the exact cause of the incident. Meanwhile, Sujin’s family did not suspect foul play and prepared to proceed with religious ceremonies, reported KhaoSod. The reporter noted that Sujin’s funeral rites would take place at Wat Chumphon Rangsarn (Wat Ruea), a revered temple in Na Thung, Chumphon. The bathing ceremony was scheduled for 4.30pm yesterday, December 18, followed by a week-long vigil from today until December 25. The cremation ceremony is set for December 26 at 1pm at the temple’s crematorium. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-19

His owner, from Uthai Thani province, is offering a reward of 2 salungs (7.5 grammes) of gold for Peter’s safe return. Wachirawit shared that Peter went missing after an unexpected visit from a monk on a walking pilgrimage. It was an unusual event, as the monk entered their home to collect alms, something the family had never experienced before. Wachirawit’s mother, startled by the monk’s presence, hid inside the house. Once the monk left, they discovered that the bulldog was missing. Despite extensive searching, Peter’s whereabouts remain unknown, leaving the family worried and anxious. “Peter’s disappearance has left me deeply distressed. He isn’t just a pet, he’s a part of our family. His three puppies wait eagerly for their father’s return every day.” Wachirawit explained how he continues to prepare Peter’s favourite meals, hoping for his return but, as each day passes, the worry grows. The incident unfolded at Oscar Bar, Patong, late last night, December 18. Police were called to the scene at 11.50pm, where they found 31 year old Russian national Evgenii Kozlov seriously injured after a scuffle with bar security. According to initial reports, Kozlov, heavily intoxicated, climbed onto the stage and began dancing, disrupting the bar’s operations. 7. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Police officers in Samut Songkhram successfully subdued a 50 year old local man wielding a long knife in a pomelo orchard. The incident occurred yesterday, December 18, behind Wat Worapoom Health Promotion Hospital, with officers employing negotiation tactics to defuse the situation. The Samut Songkhram Police Station received reports of a man, identified only as Yod, brandishing a 2-foot-long sword in an agitated state. Responding swiftly to the call, officers, led by Phasaworn Limpaiwan, arrived at the scene prepared with non-lethal equipment, including a forked stick and a taser, ready to mitigate any potential threat. “Yod was speaking incoherently but we managed to talk him down after offering some money. He eventually put down the knife and approached us peacefully.” The negotiation process took approximately half an hour, allowing the officers to safely take him into custody. During Yod’s apprehension, an unfortunate mishap occurred when a trainee officer, Napat Whanpol, stepped into human waste left by Yod. Despite the unpleasant surprise, the officers maintained their professionalism. They proceeded to clean Yod and offered him a fresh pair of trousers before escorting him to the police station for further questioning. Yod confessed during the preliminary investigation to having consumed two methamphetamine (meth) pills, purchased from an individual named Tui from Amphawa. Each pill cost him 50 baht. A urine test conducted at the scene returned a positive result for drugs, which was later confirmed at Amphawa Hospital. Consequently, Yod faces charges for illegal drug use under the Narcotics Act, reported KhaoSod. Reflecting on the unusual arrest, trainee officer Napat described his initial reaction upon stepping in the faeces. “At first, I thought it was dog faeces because of the strong smell, but upon closer inspection, I realised it wasn’t.” Meanwhile, Kitti Masawaeng, who was also at the scene, offered insight into the cleanup efforts. “The mess was everywhere. I borrowed a hose from a neighbour to clean up. Despite the situation, as fellow humans, we must help each other.” Despite the chaos, the event serves as a grim reminder of the societal impact of drug abuse, leaving the community to unite in both cleaning up and confronting the underlying issues. 8. Cambodian call centre scammer nabbed after raping victim’s girlfriend By Petch Petpailin Photo via Channel 7 Police delivered justice to a Thai man tricked by a call centre scam gang in Cambodia after the leader also raped the victim’s girlfriend. 9. Photo via Channel 7 By Petch Petpailin Police delivered justice to a Thai man tricked by a call centre scam gang in Cambodia after the leader also raped the victim’s girlfriend. The Thai couple was reunited after being separated after falling victim to a call centre scam and human trafficking gang. Together, they sought help from non-profit organisation Saimai Survive to ensure all relevant suspects were brought to justice. The man explained that he was unemployed at the end of November and shared his profile on a Facebook group in a bid to find a job. He was contacted by an agent offering him a position at a casino in Cambodia. The agent insisted the work was legal and well-paid, so the man agreed. The victim travelled to Cambodia on December 11, where his Chinese employer immediately confiscated his mobile phone upon arrival. He was ordered to open a bank account online, which was then used as a mule account for the gang. The man was forced to perform facial scans when scam victims transferred money to the mule account. He was brutally punished whenever he refused to comply. After his account was eventually suspended, the gang released him and he fled back to Thailand. Only one suspect arrested The man was devastated to learn that his girlfriend had been raped by the agent who tricked him into working for the scam gang. The woman revealed that she lost contact with her boyfriend and contacted the agent in an attempt to find him. The agent falsely informed her that her boyfriend was having an affair with another woman in the central province of Nakhon Pathom and refused to work. The agent offered to take her to meet her boyfriend, to which she agreed. Tragically, the man tricked her into his room and raped her. He then threatened her, saying she should not report the sexual assault to the police if she did not want her boyfriend to be killed in Cambodia. Officers from Provincial Police Region 7 eventually arrested the scam agent in the Kamphaeng Saen district of Nakhon Pathom on Tuesday, December 17. His identity has not yet been made public. The suspect has a long history of criminal activity. He was arrested for theft in May 2008 and multiple times in December 2008 for embezzlement, stealing, and committing theft with violent assault or a weapon. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-19
  10. Thailand health ministry warns of new year disease risks By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod The Ministry of Public Health issued a warning about diseases to watch out for during the new year, particularly influenza and sudden hearing loss. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1346658-thailand-health-ministry-warns-of-new-year-disease-risks/
  11. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal The Ministry of Public Health issued a warning about diseases to watch out for during the new year, particularly influenza and sudden hearing loss. They urged travellers to monitor their health upon returning from trips abroad. With the weather cooling down and many people travelling internationally, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has updated its list of diseases with potential outbreak risks. Covid-19 cases typically rise towards the end of the year. Last week, 730 hospitalisations were reported, an increase from 577 the week before. Severe cases are primarily among the unvaccinated. Thailand is currently seeing the JN.1 variant at 26.5%, KP3.1 at 16.2%, and XEC at 19.1%. Despite the uptick in cases, no increased severity has been noted, and the situation is under continuous surveillance. Influenza cases appear to decrease towards the year-end compared to the rainy season but should not be overlooked. In 2023, there was a slight increase in cases at the year’s end, especially in schools with children aged five to nine. This year, 48 fatalities were recorded, mostly among individuals with pre-existing conditions, unvaccinated, and the elderly. The predominant strain was A/H1N1. Preventive measures for Covid-19 and influenza include regular hand washing, not sharing personal items, eating cooked food, getting vaccinated, and wearing masks in crowded places. Dengue fever Dengue fever cases usually decline towards year-end but remain a concern in flood-prone areas like the south. Children are the main risk group for infection, whereas the elderly with underlying conditions are at higher risk of death. Preventing mosquito bites by using repellent is crucial to stop the spread. Dengue vaccines are available in some state hospitals for a fee. Food poisoning and acute diarrhoea, caused by bacteria and viruses, have seen a rise in cases this year, the highest in the past three years. All age groups are affected, with the most cases among school children aged five to 14. Between 2018 and 2024, 729 cases of Norovirus G1 and G3 strains were reported. Though not a new pathogen, Norovirus has become more prominent due to the reduction in Rotavirus cases following the introduction of a vaccine for infants. There were 743,697 cases of acute diarrhoea, with two fatalities but none from Norovirus. Hygiene practices, like washing hands with soap and eating freshly cooked food, are vital for prevention. Food handlers with symptoms should refrain from work until recovery. Other notable diseases include whooping cough, with 1,245 cases and two deaths in 2024, mainly affecting infants under two months in the south. The low vaccination coverage in this region requires emphasis on vaccination, similar to Covid-19 and influenza prevention. Sudden hearing loss is linked to the Streptococcus suis bacteria in meat, particularly pork, from undercooked consumption. December saw three deaths among individuals over 35 with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, primarily in the north and northeast. Cooking food thoroughly, separating utensils for raw and cooked food, and protecting open wounds are necessary precautions. Symptoms range from fever to long-term hearing loss, which is challenging to recover from. Internationally, avian influenza remains a concern with sporadic H5N1 reports but no human-to-human transmission. Recent cases in Vietnam and the USA involved contact with infected poultry. Consuming cooked poultry, eggs, and dairy, and avoiding contact with sick or dead animals, are recommended. If flu-like symptoms occur, seeking medical attention and informing about exposure risks is crucial. Monkeypox saw 19,823 cases and 73 deaths globally in 2024, with Africa reporting the majority. Thailand recorded 175 cases mainly of Clade II, with only one Clade Ib case. Avoiding crowded places, not sharing items, and regular hand washing are advised, particularly for those with chronic illnesses or weakened immunity. Oropouche fever, spread by midges and mosquitoes, had 11,664 cases and two deaths globally in 2024, mostly in the Americas. With a low outbreak risk in Thailand, travellers to affected regions should wear long sleeves, use insect repellent, and seek medical care if symptomatic upon return. An unknown outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported 527 cases and 32 deaths by December 9, mostly affecting young girls with symptoms like fever and fatigue. Further testing revealed malaria in 10 out of 12 samples, indicating the need for additional analysis. The DDC advises those returning from abroad to maintain personal hygiene, wear masks in crowded places, wash hands frequently, and avoid sharing items. Monitoring personal health and seeking medical advice if symptoms appear within one to three weeks after travel is essential, reported KhaoSod. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-19

Be One, a resolute non-profit organisation, orchestrated the rescue after the young victim bravely confided in a friend. The friend’s parents, acting upon the girl's plight, contacted Be One to initiate justice. Be One President, Wanna "Ton Or" Palamart, immediately delved into the grim details before accompanying the girl to the local police station to file formal charges against her abusers. Shocking revelations surfaced; the abuse had persisted over two years, beginning when the girl lived with her uncle and then continuing under her grandfather’s roof. Following an eventual return to her uncle's house, she found herself tormented once again, fearing for her safety. In an unsettling twist, the girl's father, aware of the ongoing abuse, discouraged any legal pursuit due to the fear of societal embarrassment. Despite acknowledging the gravity and duration of the offences, he only reported recently learning about the uncle's involvement. This familial reluctance highlights a troubling cultural stigma surrounding such crimes. Both perpetrators now find themselves in police custody, awaiting charges under Thai law, which prescribes serious penalties for sexual offences involving minors. The girl's bravery and her friend's support underscore the critical need for community vigilance and swift action against such grievous acts. -- 2024-12-19

  19. File photo for reference only In an unusual move, Inspector Pisan of Lamae Police Station in Thailand has formally declined consideration for promotion, citing philosophical reasoning drawn from Buddhist teachings. His decision, communicated in a letter dated 13 December, challenges typical pursuit of career advancement, opting instead for a more contemplative approach as he nears retirement. Pisan, currently at the lowest rank of his seniority list, expressed that his skills do not yet qualify him for higher responsibilities and highlighted his retirement plans for 2024. The officer’s choice follows a provincial directive urging performance reports for the upcoming annual promotion cycle. His letter reflects not only personal introspection but also Buddhist wisdom, including thoughts from renowned monk Buddhadasa Bhikkhu: “People today strive for what they do not have, and in the end, everyone receives the same thing: nothing.” Furthermore, he invoked a proverb on the transience of youth and happiness. Pisan's decision has stirred conversation within and outside the police community, serving as a reminder of deeper values that transcend professional ambition in a highly hierarchical field. It underscores broader philosophical considerations in personal and career choices, marking a thought-provoking perspective in an age of relentless progression. -- 2024-12-19

  23. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal A significant fraud case involving over 50 victims duped into paying for bamboo blinds they never received has culminated in the arrest of the alleged perpetrator. Since 2018, numerous complaints have been filed, with victims coming forward to report being scammed by a Facebook page with a misleading name. The accused, who had been evading the police, was finally apprehended in Chiang Mai. The culmination of the case unravelled yesterday, December 18, when police from the Region 5 Investigation Division, under the supervision of Worapong Khamlue, coordinated with central police to arrest the suspect. The suspect had been hiding out in Chiang Mai, after allegedly committing multiple frauds in Chon Buri. “We received intelligence that led us to believe the suspect was in the area, and we worked with local police to confirm his location.” The suspect was tracked to a village in the San Kamphaeng district, where he had lived two years ago with an ex-girlfriend. Although the two had since separated, investigators had been monitoring his mobile phone activity in the area. With this information, they secured a search warrant and proceeded to the location, only to find he had moved to another district, Saraphi. Local administrative officers and the residential management of Bua Khae Village provided crucial information that aided the investigative team in their pursuit. Subsequently, police followed the lead to Saraphi, where they finally located and arrested 32 year old Thanakornwit, in compliance with a Chiang Mai Provincial Court warrant. He faces charges of fraud and deceitfully introducing falsified information into a computer system, causing potential harm to individuals. During interrogation, Thanakornwit confessed to the crimes. He explained that he originally operated a legitimate business selling bamboo blinds, advertising heavily on Facebook. This online promotion attracted a large customer base, resulting in an overwhelming number of orders. However, due to production delays at the factory, he was unable to fulfil these orders. Compounding his problems, he misused the funds for personal financial issues, leaving him unable to procure the products for his customers. “I started with a legitimate business but things spiralled out of control when I couldn’t keep up with the demand.” His actions resulted in numerous complaints being filed across various regions, particularly in Chiang Mai and several other provinces. Police have now taken Thanakornwit into custody at Chang Phueak Police Station, where he will face prosecution. They are also coordinating with other investigators handling related cases to ensure comprehensive legal action is taken against him, reported KhaoSod. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-19

  25. Photo via MGR Online By Petch Petpailin A Thai woman took to social media to expose her employer, a restaurant owner in the Isaan province of Khon Kaen, for sexually harassing her by sending lewd messages and pictures, including an image of his penis. The 30 year old victim, Nat, resigned from the restaurant and filed a complaint against the owner at Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station. She later shared her story in a Facebook group for Khon Kaen residents to warn others, especially women, to avoid working at the place. In an interview with Channel 8, Nat revealed that she heard rumours about her employer’s inappropriate behaviour when she first started working at the restaurant. However, as nothing happened to her at the time, she chose to ignore it and continued working. Nat worked there for five months before the harassment began. The issue arose after she viewed an explicit picture shared by her employer on social media. The employer noticed her among the viewers of his post and sent her a message. “Don’t be unrestrained when looking at the pictures I share, OK? But if you’re interested, I can open a whole new world for you.” The employer then asked Nat for sex and invited her to join him in watching swinging activities at a hotel. Nat refused his advances and firmly stated her lack of interest. She immediately planned to resign and began searching for a new job Pervert employer While waiting for new employment, Nat endured continued sexual harassment from her employer, who persisted in sending her lewd messages and invitations for sex. He also sent her explicit pictures of his penis or sex toys daily, boasting about his sexual prowess with messages such as… “I usually pay 5,000 baht for sex. I’ll double it for you. Is that OK?” “Everyone wants to have sex with me when they see this (sending a picture of his penis). Don’t you want to try?” “I know you want to have sex with me too but you are too shy.” The harassment escalated when the employer sent Nat videos of himself masturbating while drunk and continued to pressure her for sex, even offering her money in exchange. Although Nat eventually left the restaurant, the harassment did not stop. The employer ordered other staff members to search for her at her accommodation and her boyfriend’s workplace, attempting to bring her back to the restaurant. Feeling unsafe, Nat decided to leave the province altogether. Nat urged the police to expedite their investigation and take her case more seriously. She expressed concern that the restaurant owner might flee before police acted. Channel 8 reported that its team attempted to contact the restaurant owner, but he declined to speak with the media.
