Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Move over, culinary giants, Thailand claimed its spot on the Michelin map! In a historic first, Bangkok’s Sorn has become the only Thai restaurant to snag the coveted three stars in the 2025 Michelin Guide Thailand, unveiled yesterday, November 27. Led by the visionary Chef Supaksorn Jongsiri, Sorn earned the prestigious accolade for its “excellence, quality, and consistency,” according to Michelin. Since bagging its first star in 2019, the restaurant held onto a two-star rating for five years, steadily dazzling diners with its mastery of Thai cuisine. Housed in a charming traditional Thai house off Sukhumvit Soi 26, Sorn’s dishes embody authentic flavours elevated to perfection. Unsurprisingly, reservations remain a hot commodity, opening monthly for international foodies. This year’s guide celebrates a dynamic dining scene with 462 establishments, including seven two-star restaurants, 28 one-star venues, and 156 Bib Gourmand entries. Among the new stars, Côte by Mauro Colagreco joins the two-star list, while four fresh names secure one-star status. Among them are Akkee, known for rustic, no-frills regional Thai dishes; Avant, which blends traditional and modern techniques under a Singaporean chef’s deft hand; Goat, merging Thai, Chinese, and Western influences with a farm-to-table ethos; and Aulis, a Chef’s Table experience showcasing native ingredients. Notably, Akkee in Nonthaburi and Aulis in Phang Nga bring Michelin stars beyond Bangkok’s borders. Sadly, some big names—Sushi Masato, Canvas, Cadence by Dan Bark, and Khao Ekkamai—lost their stars, proving that Michelin’s standards remain as fierce as ever, reported Bangkok Post. Photo via Facebook/ เจ๊ม้อย v+ By Petch Petpailin A Thai man shared a video of his plea to a thief on social media and sought help from local police officers in the northern province of Chiang Rai after his condominium room was a victim of two robberies. The victim shared the video, in which he begged the thief not to break into his room, on the news Facebook page J Moi V+ (เจ๊มอย v+), today, November 28. The incident took place at the man’s condominium on Bai Phat Road in the Wing Phang Kham sub-district, Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai. In the video, the thief was seen standing on the balcony with a hammer in his hand. The suspect wore a black long-sleeved shirt and shorts and covered his face with a black balaclava. The victim could be heard shouting at the thief. “Please, please, please. Don’t come in. Please, please, please, don’t. I’m recording you now. Bro, bro, bro, don’t come in. I’m calling the police. Police are coming! Police are downstairs! Thief! Thief! Thief!” The thief was seen pacing back and forth on the balcony while the victim shouted at him. The suspect eventually gave up and left the scene. After the thief left, the man recorded videos of his room, showing the camera that he was too frightened to put down the two knives he was holding. The man provided further details to the page, explaining that the thief arrived at his accommodation at around 2am, just as he had finished his night shift and returned home. He was naked at the time because he had taken off his clothes and was about to take a shower when he noticed the thief. The man believed that this thief was the same person who robbed his room twice previously. He lost over 40,000 baht in cash to the thief but was unable to catch him until now. The man expressed his concern that the video he recorded did not clearly show the thief’s identity and that the police might not take his complaint seriously. He added that he could not sleep the whole night for fear that the thief would return. The victim sought advice from the page and its followers on what he should do next. It is not clear whether the victim has already filed a complaint with the police. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-28

Chinese woman nabbed in Bangkok for running illegal beauty salon By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Police in Bangkok pulled back the curtain on a rogue beauty operation today raiding an illegal six-storey salon in the bustling Bang Kapi area and arresting seven women. Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Police in Bangkok pulled back the curtain on a rogue beauty operation today raiding an illegal six-storey salon in the bustling Bang Kapi area and arresting seven women. The salon, named YF Salon, offered a full menu of beauty services, from hair and nail treatments to massages and even filler injections. But behind the glitz was a dark reality—none of it was legal. Officers today, November 28, apprehended 42 year old Ren Xuemei, the Chinese owner of the operation, who admitted to running the unlicensed salon in Huai Khwang district. She confessed that fierce competition in China drove her to set up shop in Thailand. “I never applied for a permit.” The raid revealed a shocking lack of professionalism. Staff performing injections lacked medical licences, and police found doctor gowns that had been bought online. It’s unclear what safety standards, if any, were being followed. The other six arrested included two Chinese nationals, 28 year old Wen Chun and 44 year old Gao Juan, along with four Thai women aged between 18 and 20. All were taken into custody at Makkasan Police Station. This incident highlights the hidden dangers of unlicenced beauty services, which often prey on unsuspecting customers looking for budget-friendly options. Police urged the public to verify licences before undergoing treatments, especially those involving injections or medical procedures, reported Bangkok Post. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-28

Cathay Pacific HK airline slammed over 5-hour Bangkok delay By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Simple Flying Hundreds of Cathay Pacific passengers endured a travel nightmare in Bangkok when a flight cancellation left them stranded for hours with no answers, no food, and no passports. Photo courtesy of Simple Flying By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Hundreds of Cathay Pacific passengers endured a travel nightmare in Bangkok when a flight cancellation left them stranded for hours with no answers, no food, and no passports. Passengers of flight CX630, scheduled to leave Bangkok for Hong Kong at 4.55pm on Monday, November 25, found themselves stuck on the plane for over five hours before being shuttled to a hotel at nearly 3am. To make matters worse, their passports were confiscated without explanation, leaving many feeling anxious and unsafe. “We were waiting on the plane for hours until an announcement at 11pm said the flight couldn’t take off,” said Lee, a 36 year old designer. “The ground staff took our passports, put wristbands on us, and couldn’t explain why. We felt very insecure.” The Hong Kong airline blamed the delay on a spoiler fault discovered at 8pm. Engineers initially fixed the issue but the fault resurfaced after the plane returned to the gate. Some first-class and business-class passengers were transferred to another flight, but over 200 economy passengers were stranded. “We weren’t offered food or water. Only business-class passengers got ice cream. My friends were getting stomach aches, and we didn’t sleep, waiting for updates.” Stranded travellers were taken to the Amaranth Suvarnabhumi Hotel but frustration grew as updates were sparse and Cathay staff were nowhere to be seen. An email from the airline later revealed the technical fault and promised compensation of 10,000 Asia Miles for affected passengers. Cathay’s next Bangkok-to-Hong Kong flight was scheduled for Tuesday at 4.55pm, leaving passengers with nearly 24 hours of chaos and uncertainty. “It’s unacceptable. We were treated as an afterthought.” This incident sparked criticism over how airlines handle emergencies and left Cathay facing a fierce backlash, reported Bangkok Post. File photo for reference only Phuket is intensifying efforts to tackle human trafficking within its busy marine industry. During a key meeting on November 27, local leaders emphasized the importance of protecting workers from abuse and aligning with international anti-human trafficking standards. The meeting was led by Vice Governor Ronnarong Thipsiri and took place at the Provincial Welfare and Labour Protection Office. Here, Thanapong Onchar, the office's chief, joined other key figures to foster better cooperation among agencies, aim to eliminate trafficking, and ensure fair work conditions for both Thai and foreign workers. “Our joint efforts will protect the workforce and boost Thailand's image as a nation dedicated to fighting labor exploitation,” a participant stated. Inspectors had a busy year, launching four major operations to investigate 16 fishing boats and 389 crew members, which included 35 Thai workers, 328 from Myanmar, and 26 from Cambodia. The officials looked at Thailand's Tier 2 status in the 2024 US Trafficking in Persons Report, a rank the country has held for three consecutive years. The government received praise for its efforts in identifying victims and prosecuting offenders, though the ranking suggests there is still room to progress. The discussions led to planning future strategies focusing on improved collaboration between agencies, public awareness campaigns, and stronger enforcement of labor laws. Vice Governor Ronnarong noted achievements like victim screening centers and compensation systems but stressed the need to address existing shortcomings. “We have to fill the gaps for a well-rounded solution to these challenges,” said Vice Governor Ronnarong. With renewed dedication, Phuket officials hope to curtail trafficking and exploitation, paving the way for a better and fairer future for marine industry workers. -- 2024-11-28

Constitution Rewrite Debate: Three Referendums Necessary, Confirms Thai Official File photo for reference only In a recent development regarding Thailand's constitutional rewrite, Nikorn Chamnong, secretary of the joint House-Senate panel on the referendum bill, has stated that three referendums are required for a complete overhaul of the 2017 constitution. Parit believed he had the backing of Parliament President Wan Muhammad Noor Matha for his proposal. File photo for reference only In a recent development regarding Thailand's constitutional rewrite, Nikorn Chamnong, secretary of the joint House-Senate panel on the referendum bill, has stated that three referendums are required for a complete overhaul of the 2017 constitution. This statement challenges the claim made by People’s Party list MP Parit Wacharasindhu, who argued that only two referendums would be sufficient. Parit believed he had the backing of Parliament President Wan Muhammad Noor Matha for his proposal. Nikorn clarified that a Constitutional Court ruling from March 2021 dictates the need for at least three referendums for a comprehensive reworking of the constitution. This ruling stands firm despite any discussions between Wan and Parit, who heads the House Committee on Political Development, Mass Communication, and Public Participation. Parit convened a meeting with Wan, aiming to speed up the referendum process, hoping to have a new constitution crafted by a charter-drafting assembly (CDA) ready before the next General Election. He argued that limiting the referendums to two would be crucial for sticking to this timeline. Nikorn countered, stating, “The meeting can’t lower the number of referendums because the court ruling applies to Parliament… the Parliament president would face a complaint if he bows to pressure for him to put charter amendment bills on the agenda prematurely.” Nikorn also reminded the People's Party of a previous failed attempt to amend the charter in 2021, pointing out that objections by the military-appointed Senate led to a court ruling request before the bill's third reading. He warned that similar hindrances could arise during the first reading this time, potentially delaying the entire process. After his meeting with Wan, Parit plans to prompt party MPs to submit a new charter amendment bill. This will enable the government, opposition, and Senate whips to reassess the number of referendums needed. Parit claims to possess new insights that might convince the whips that two referendums are enough, arguing that the 2021 court ruling didn’t specify an exact number but insisted only that a referendum must occur before any charter rewrite. Consequently, he believes that two rounds could be sufficient. -- 2024-11-28

Thailand's Opposition Opts for Parliamentary Path Despite Protest Calls File photo for reference only Thailand’s main opposition party, the People’s Party (PP), has chosen to stay away from upcoming anti-government protests pushed by Sondhi Limthongkul, a former protest leader. File photo for reference only Thailand’s main opposition party, the People’s Party (PP), has chosen to stay away from upcoming anti-government protests pushed by Sondhi Limthongkul, a former protest leader. Instead, PP aims to address issues within the Parliamentary system. Party spokesperson Parit Wacharasindhu emphasized on November 27 that they plan to tackle governmental concerns through established legislative means. They intend to focus on pressing issues like justice administration, the Khao Kradong land controversy, and the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for joint development in the Gulf of Thailand with Cambodia. Parit highlighted the party's dedication to proposing reforms through bills and legal changes, many of which have received Parliamentary approval. This statement came after Nattawut Saikuar, an adviser to the prime minister, suggested that PP supporters might join the protests. Parit called these comments baseless and reaffirmed that the party advocates for free expression only when it aligns with democratic principles. "We plan to work within the system to ensure government accountability and push for change," Parit stated clearly, distancing the party from external political movements. Concerns over Potential Protests Sondhi Limthongkul plans to carry out regular activities next year, raising concerns that they might evolve into widespread protests against the Pheu Thai-led government. Such unrest in the past, against Thai Rak Thai-led and Pheu Thai administrations, led to the 2006 and 2014 coups, according to Nattawut. Chousak Sirinil from the PM’s Office urged the public to consider the negative impacts of past protests and coups, which hindered Thailand's progress. He stressed no current conditions justify mass protests and that no negotiations on the 2001 MoU are ongoing, needing parliamentary approval for any outcomes. Chousak dismissed claims that the Paetongtarn Shinawatra administration would face an early end, while Paiboon Nititawan of the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) advised careful handling of sensitive issues such as charter amendments and the referendum bill. The House recently favored a simple majority vote to pass a charter amendment referendum, shortening the waiting period to ten days if deemed a finance bill. Paiboon insisted the government follows House regulations, warning of potential challenges for the Paetongtarn administration to sustain its governance for the coming year. -- 2024-11-28

Thai police banned from collecting fees for red checkpoint boxes By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Post Today Thai police issued an urgent directive prohibiting officers from collecting monthly fees for red checkpoint boxes following a corruption ruling by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). Photo courtesy of Post Today By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Thai police issued an urgent directive prohibiting officers from collecting monthly fees for red checkpoint boxes following a corruption ruling by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). An official notification was acknowledged by Phumithat Khositwanichpong, Deputy Commander of Nonthaburi Provincial Police, acting on behalf of the Provincial Police Commander. The directive, marked as the most urgent under number 0016.413/8182 and dated yesterday, November 27, addresses all provincial police commanders and the heads of all police stations. It reiterates the prohibition against police officers collecting fees for red checkpoint boxes, as previously outlined in a police directive from March 10, 2005 (document number 009.5/623). The NACC’s investigation revealed that police officers responsible for these checkpoint boxes within their jurisdiction were found to be collecting monthly fees. Such actions were deemed a severe disciplinary violation, with the officers exploiting their official positions for personal gain. The commission concluded that this misuse of authority constitutes serious misconduct, falling under corruption and abuse of their official duties, said Phumithat. “The act of collecting fees for red checkpoint boxes is a grave violation of both disciplinary and criminal codes, as it involves exploiting official power for personal benefit.” To ensure proper adherence to these regulations, the directive emphasises that all police stations must strictly inform their officers about this prohibition and enforce compliance rigorously. This notification serves as a reminder and guide for all officers involved. The red checkpoint boxes are a fixture in many areas, intended to facilitate police duties such as monitoring traffic and ensuring public safety. However, the misuse of these boxes for personal financial gain has led to scrutiny and the need for strict enforcement of ethical conduct among officers, Phumithat said. “Officers must adhere to ethical standards and refrain from actions that could undermine the integrity of our law enforcement institutions.” The move comes amidst broader efforts to crack down on corruption within the police force and uphold the principles of transparency and accountability. By reinforcing the prohibition on fee collection, the police leadership aims to deter any form of malpractice that could undermine the credibility of the force. Police officials have been tasked with ensuring that all personnel are fully informed of this directive and that compliance is monitored continuously. This is part of an ongoing effort to ensure that all police activities adhere to the highest ethical and legal standards, reported KhaoSod. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-28

Family suspect black magic in deaths of Thai man and daughter By Petch Petpailin Photo via DailyNews A Thai man and his daughter died under mysterious circumstances in their home in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Photo via DailyNews By Petch Petpailin A Thai man and his daughter died under mysterious circumstances in their home in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Relatives suspect their deaths may be linked to the woman’s belief in black magic. A relative visited the home of 87 year old Samreng and his 57 year old daughter, Katechada, in the Pak Phun sub-district of Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat district yesterday, November 27. Upon arrival, the relative noticed an unpleasant smell and later discovered the decomposed bodies of the two. Officers from the Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat Police Station were called to investigate. They found a sacred altar in the single-storey house, with Katechada’s body nearby. Samreng was found lifeless on a bed close to his daughter. The bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition, and police believe they had been dead for more than ten days. The relative told police that Katechada took her father to live with her and assured the family she would care for him. She barred anyone from entering her home and frequently refused visitors, cutting off all contact with relatives. Out of concern for Samreng’s health, the relative visited the house and discovered both already died. Samreng’s son revealed that his father was bedridden. He wanted to visit his father but said Katechada consistently rejected his requests. According to him, she often asked him for money, claiming it was for their father’s care. Police suspect that Katechada may have distanced herself and her father from their relatives due to her superstitious beliefs, possibly to prevent interference with her practices. As for the cause of death, police believe Katechada may have slipped and collapsed while walking in the house and died. Without proper care, her father may have subsequently died as well. The bodies have been sent for autopsy at Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital, and the investigation into their deaths is ongoing. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-28

Thai mother ignores after new husband sexually assaults daughter By Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ TMN Cable TV Pattaya A Thai father is taking legal action against his ex-wife’s new husband after the man sexually assaulted his 16 year old daughter while the mother allegedly turned a blind eye for financial reasons. Photo via Facebook/ TMN Cable TV Pattaya By Petch Petpailin A Thai father is taking legal action against his ex-wife’s new husband after the man sexually assaulted his 16 year old daughter while the mother allegedly turned a blind eye for financial reasons. The 16 year old girl from Pattaya turned to Channel 7 after her biological mother refused to help and did not believe her account of the sexual assault by her stepfather. She admitted to having suicidal thoughts due to the stress caused by the incident. The victim revealed to the media that the stepfather took her to a football field, without her mother accompanying her. After playing football with his friends, the stepfather encouraged her to drink alcohol until she was drunk. The stepfather then took her to his car and wiped her body with a wet cloth. He then ordered her to undress. She complied out of fear. The following day, the stepfather took her to the football field again, asked her to drink alcohol, and touched her private parts in the car. She decided to run away from the vehicle. Her father told her not to tell anyone about the incident and took her back home. The girl disclosed that the stepfather often took advantage of her mother’s absence to sexually assault her. She could no longer endure the abuse and confided in both her mother and her teacher but neither offered any help. The victim shared a screenshot of a conversation with her mother with the media. Her mother expressed disbelief and emphasised that the victim should be patient because the stepfather provided financial support. Her teacher also failed to help the girl, stating that she had never experienced such a situation and did not know how to assist her. The news agency tracked down the girl’s biological father and successfully contacted him. The father revealed that he had been searching for his daughter for over 10 years but both his ex-wife and her mother prevented him from seeing her. The man expressed his sorrow for what his daughter endured and vowed to pursue legal action against the stepfather to the fullest extent. Channel 7 reported that Mueang Pattaya Police Station officers summoned the stepfather for questioning this afternoon. Details of the interrogation have not yet been released. File photo for reference only In a heart-wrenching incident yesterday, two cherished family dogs were poisoned and killed in Chon Buri province. Chalawan Chutaphet from Bang Lamung district's Tambon Khao Mai Kaew mourns with his family following this devastating event. The tragedy unfolded when the pets consumed fried chicken laced with poison, seemingly placed by an unidentified person with malicious intent. On November 27, Chalawan shared with reporters how he noticed someone on a motorcycle toss the tainted chicken pieces into his yard. His dogs, unaware of the danger, eagerly ate the food but soon began to convulse, struggle for breath, and sadly passed away in front of Chalawan and his family. Although Chalawan hasn't filed a police report yet, he hopes the person responsible understands the cruelty of their actions. He stressed that if there were any grievances with his household or pets, a direct conversation would have been more humane than attacking innocent animals. The incident has struck a nerve among pet owners in the community, raising concerns over their animals' safety. Poisoning incidents occasionally occur, but this intentional targeting of pets has sent shockwaves through the local community. -- 2024-11-28

File photo for reference only Operation CIB Crush the Grey Dragon, conducted by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), has successfully dismantled an illegal telecommunications network in Chiang Mai. The sweeping operation resulted in the arrest of 15 individuals, including a 30-year-old Thai woman named Jiraporn Prakobkit. Among the arrested were one other Thai national, five Chinese citizens, and eight Myanmar nationals. All face charges related to unauthorized telecommunications activities under warrants issued by the Criminal Court. The police seized a massive haul of equipment, valued at 592,235 items in total. This included 642 GSM gateway devices (commonly known as SIM boxes), 72 computers, 1,455 mobile phones, 590,000 SIM cards, 47 SIM card readers, six bank account books, along with several other electronic devices and documents. The crackdown follows a previous raid on May 23, which targeted call center operations across nine provinces, seizing 96 SIM boxes and 22,830 SIM cards. Police Lieutenant General Jiraphop revealed that Jiraporn was in charge of finding locations, paying bills, and setting up the SIM boxes and electronics in more than ten areas around Chiang Mai. Her Chinese husband has been identified as the gang’s leader. The gang was found using SIM boxes to create fake social media accounts, which were sold to call centers and other online crime groups. This allowed them to execute scams by sending out verification messages known as OTPs (one-time passwords) through their system. These OTPs were then sold for one yuan (around 5 baht) to create fake accounts. By tweaking the devices, they managed to bypass social media security systems to make these accounts appear legitimate, allowing them to sell at higher prices. Lt. Gen. Jiraphop added that Jiraporn confessed to leasing properties and paying bills for her husband, who provided the equipment. The other detained individuals were tasked with overseeing the properties where the SIM boxes were based. These arrests are part of continuing efforts to stop call center scams that cause financial losses of tens of billions of baht each year. By targeting these illegal operations and seizing SIM boxes, authorities aim to cut off vital tools used by cybercriminals. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, especially the Chinese financiers who are currently evading capture. -- 2024-11-28

File photo for reference only The Thai Ministry of Transport has announced a special New Year treat for travelers by collaborating with airlines to tackle the issue of costly flight tickets. Just in time for the holiday season, they are offering a 30% discount on 50,000 seats from December 26 to January 5. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, shared on November 27 that a crucial meeting was held with the Thai Airline Association, which includes Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, Thai VietJet, and Thai Airways. This was to devise a plan to make flights more affordable during peak festive times. The special discounted rates apply to return flights between Bangkok and several popular destinations such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi, Hat Yai, Koh Samui, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen, and Nan. To take advantage of this offer, travelers need to book directly with the airlines between December 5 and December 7. This initiative is set to make traveling home for the holidays more accessible, affordable, and safe. Suriya expressed confidence in these efforts, anticipating that they will significantly ease travel for many people heading home for the New Year celebrations in 2025. In addition, the Department of Airports and Airports of Thailand (AOT) are preparing to extend service hours and improve airport facilities, including luggage handling, in airports such as Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, and others. Meanwhile, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand is enhancing operations across aviation facilities. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand will also monitor the situation to ensure fare remains fair and consistent for passengers throughout the holiday period. -- 2024-11-28
