A drunk Thai man today stabbed a drug-addicted stranger to death after he entered his room in the central province of Ratchaburi without permission and then used drugs in his accommodation. Officers from Photharam Police Station were called to investigate the lifeless body of a Thai man named Noi, found lying face-up on a road leading to a village in the Photharam district of Ratchaburi, today, November 25. A fatal stab wound was discovered on his back. The perpetrator, 27 year old Ye, was present at the scene. He confessed to the crime and handed over the knife used in the attack to the police. Ye explained that he was drinking alcohol in his rented room when the victim entered without permission. The deceased also brought methamphetamine, also known as Yaba, into the room and used it in front of him. Ye said he became angry and demanded that Noi leave his room, which made Noi furious. He called two friends, who later arrived at the room. In a fit of rage, Ye stabbed Noi in the back, shocking both the victim and his friends. All of them fled the room before Noi collapsed on the road and died. Ye then went to the house of the community leader to report the incident and asked the leader to call the police to the scene. Ye insisted that he did not know the deceased or his friends personally and had never argued with them before. Police searched Ye’s room and found an empty bottle of alcohol and a piece of foil paper used for Yaba consumption. Ye was escorted to the police station, where officers planned to question him further once he sobered up. By Petch Petpailin Photo via 77 Kaoded Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-25

Thai media outlets and netizens praised a 12 year old boy for the rescue of a 17 year old girl from an attempted suicide in the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok on Friday. The Ruamkatanyu Foundation at Bang Phong Phang Police Station Facebook page shared a video of the young hero on Friday, November 22. In the caption, the foundation explained that a group of young boys saved the 17 year old girl, later identified as Nattamon, from a suicide attempt. Nattamon reportedly jumped from Krungthep Bridge in the Ban Kho Laem district of Bangkok into the Chao Phraya River at around 7pm. The boys jumped into the river and pulled Nattamon to the bank safely. She was rushed to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital due to exhaustion. Channel 3 interviewed one of the boys involved in the rescue mission, 12 year old Tanaphat “Klao” Boonkird, and his mother, 31 year old Suppawan Thaitanadrop, on Saturday, November 23, at Klao’s home in Soi Charoenkrung 107, Section 14, which also operated as a restaurant called “3 ท ข้าวแกง&ข้าวต้มกุ้ย 3 บาท” (3T Rice, Curry, and Porridge 3 Baht). Klao revealed to the media that he and his friends went to the bridge to fish. Initially, they fished from the bridge, but his hook got stuck on something in the water. He and his friends then went down to the riverbank to try to fix the hook. Unfortunately, while they were adjusting their fishing rods, they heard a loud splash. They turned to find Nattamon floating in the river, shouting intermittently that she wanted to die but also saying she did not want to. Klao said he was the only one who could swim in the group and decided to jump into the river to help the girl. He had to swim about 50 metres from the bank to pull her in. After being rescued, Nattamon asked the boys to retrieve her phone from the bridge so she could call her friend. Proud of son Initially, Nattamon’s friends did not believe the boys’ words, so the group sought help from a nearby security guard. Klao said that Nattamon cried and told him she wanted to die. He and his friends comforted her and encouraged her until the rescue team arrived to take her to the hospital. Klao later left a message for Nattamon, urging her not to harm herself. He told her that if he had not been there, no one would have been able to help her. Klao’s mother, Suppawan, expressed pride in her son, saying she never imagined he would be so brave. Suppawan explained that Klao did not mention the incident when he came home. She thought he might have been afraid that she would punish him for taking such a risky action. Suppawan revealed that she was proud of what her son had done and advised him to be careful whenever he offered help to anyone. She also encouraged Nattamon to think carefully before taking any action and to continue with her life, as every problem can be solved in time. Nattamon reportedly received a health check at the hospital before her family took her home to rest after the incident. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai), or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Please also contact your friends or relatives at this time if you have feelings of loneliness, stress, or depression. Seek help. Motorcycle taxis causes traffic gridlock during Pattaya concert Image courtesy of Pattaya Mail A major hip-hop concert at Legend Siam created severe traffic chaos in Pattaya at the weekend, as hundreds of motorcycle taxis caused gridlock by parking illegally in the streets. A major hip-hop concert at Legend Siam created severe traffic chaos in Pattaya at the weekend, as hundreds of motorcycle taxis caused gridlock by parking illegally in the streets. The venue, located roughly 20 kilometres from central Pattaya, drew large crowds that overwhelmed the city’s already tourist-heavy traffic system on Saturday, November 23. The situation deteriorated when motorcycle taxi drivers parked their vehicles in traffic lanes, significantly reducing road capacity and creating kilometres-long traffic jams. Multiple lanes were rendered unusable, leaving minimal space for regular traffic flow. Residents expressed their discontent with both the lack of organised parking arrangements and proper registration systems for the event. The problems were compounded by the existing heavy tourist traffic in the area. Many questioned whether concert organisers had obtained the necessary permits and implemented adequate traffic management plans. Of particular concern was the behaviour of local motorcycle taxi drivers, who were reported to be blocking not only roads but also access to residential properties. With the concert scheduled to continue for another evening, residents braced for a second night of traffic disruption. The incident sparked calls for enhanced regulations, with residents demanding better event management practices. Proposed solutions include implementing a formal registration system for motorcycle taxi drivers and ensuring they hold proper public licenses. There is also a push to prioritise local drivers to better serve community needs, reported Pattaya Mail. In similar news, Patong’s traffic woes continue to frustrate local government agencies as Mayor Chalermsak Maneesri highlights the challenges faced due to private ownership of Soi Saensabai. The notorious Phuket street is known for traffic congestion and safety hazards and has seen several pedestrian injuries, including those involving foreign tourists. The inability of Patong Municipality to impose any regulations or initiate improvements on this privately owned road remains a primary concern. Chalermsak explained that the municipality’s attempts to alleviate these issues have been consistently thwarted by the fact that Soi Saensabai is privately owned. A shocking incident unfolded yesterday evening in a restaurant in the Thung Sukhla area of Si Racha, Chon Buri, as a factory worker shot his senior colleague amidst a heated argument. Police later apprehended the suspect at his girlfriend’s house. CCTV footage captured the dramatic turn of events where approximately five colleagues, including the suspect, Phrommongkol, were drinking beer at a restaurant in Si Racha. Tensions escalated between Phrommongkol and the victim, Pornchai, leading to a verbal altercation. Initially, Phrommongkol left the restaurant on his motorcycle around 6pm, yesterday, November 24, but returned approximately 40 minutes later, rejoining the group for drinks. The situation deteriorated as another argument erupted. In a fit of rage, Phrommongkol drew a firearm from his waist and shot Pornchai once. He then fled the scene on his motorcycle. Local police were alerted to the shooting at 7.30pm, with officers from Laem Chabang Police Station and emergency response teams quickly arriving at the scene. Despite medical efforts at Vibharam Hospital, Pornchai succumbed to his injuries. The tragic event prompted Police Colonel Papanpat to instruct his investigative team to examine CCTV footage and track the suspect’s escape route. The footage revealed Phrommongkol heading towards Bang Lamung, prompting an immediate manhunt by local law enforcement. By 1am today, police successfully tracked 28 year old Phrommongkol at a residence in Bang Lamung. They seized a homemade blank gun, .380 ACP ammunition, a blue t-shirt, and a pair of black sandals. During police interrogation, Phrommongkol confessed to the shooting, recounting that the victim’s derogatory remarks, questioning respect and threatening violence provoked his anger. “I planned to scare him initially but he wouldn’t stop talking, so I lost control and shot him.” Phrommongkol admitted to discarding the weapon in a local pond before returning home, only to be apprehended by police shortly thereafter. He cooperated with police, leading them to the location where he disposed of the firearm. Pol. Col. Papanpat emphasised the swift response to the incident and the coordinated efforts to capture the suspect. Police were able to determine Phrommongkol’s hideout at his girlfriend’s residence through diligent investigation and surveillance. The suspect confessed to all charges, including premeditated murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a firearm in public without justifiable cause, and discharging a firearm in a public area. Phrommongkol is currently in police custody, awaiting further legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod. By Ryan Turner Image courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-25

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is set to lead a Cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai on Friday, November 29, marking a significant effort to bolster northern Thailand’s tourism and economic recovery following severe floods. This event is part of a broader Cabinet tour of the northern provinces, including Chiang Rai, scheduled from November 28 to December 1. The Cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai is a pivotal component of the government’s strategy to rejuvenate the northern economy. Jirayu Houngsub, spokesperson for the PM’s Office, highlighted that the meeting is one of many activities aimed at promoting tourism in the region. The 38 year old PM will focus on inspecting measures to combat wildfires and haze, which typically disrupt tourism from late winter through summer. Addressing these environmental challenges is crucial as they have long-term impacts on the region’s appeal to tourists. The promotion of tourism in the aftermath of the floods takes precedence on the agenda. Tourism is anticipated to play a vital role in driving economic growth and generating income for the region. Jirayu spoke on tourism promotion in northern provinces. “Tourism promotion in the northern provinces in the post-flood period is also high on the agenda as tourism is expected to be a core mechanism to help generate income and spur the region’s economy.” The PM, along with Cabinet ministers, will depart for Chiang Mai at 8pm on November 28, flying from the Royal Air Force’s Wing 6 in Don Mueang district to Chiang Mai International Airport. The mobile Cabinet meeting will commence at 10am on November 29 at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University in Mae Rim district. The day’s agenda also includes addressing the preparation for tackling seasonal bushfires and the associated PM2.5 ultra-fine dust pollution, a recurring environmental issue that requires immediate attention. Beyond the scheduled events in Chiang Mai, the Bangkok-born PM will continue her tour to the neighbouring province of Chiang Rai. Here, she will participate in a meeting focused on economic recovery and flood prevention plans in Mae Sai district, reported Bangkok Post. Thai cyanide killer’s lawyer withdraws, accuses client of failing to protect her Photo via MGR Online The lawyer representing the cyanide serial killer announced her withdrawal from the case and revealed plans to sue her former client for failing to protect her and withholding crucial information. The lawyer representing the cyanide serial killer announced her withdrawal from the case and revealed plans to sue her former client for failing to protect her and withholding crucial information. On November 20, the court delivered a verdict in one of the murder cases involving Sararat “Am” Rangsiwuthaporn, also known as “Am Cyanide.” Sararat was sentenced to death for the murder of Siriporn “Koy” Khanwong. Other murder cases remain under consideration by the court. In addition to Sararat’s sentencing, the court handed a one-year and four-month prison term to her ex-husband, Withun Rangsiwuthaporn, and a two-year prison sentence to Sararat’s lawyer, Thannicha “Phat” Eksuwannawat. Both Withun and Thannicha were later released on bail of 100,000 baht each. Reports from Thai media stated that Sararat appeared unfazed during the court proceedings. She reportedly smiled, giggled, and conversed with her lawyer in a relaxed manner during the hearing. In an unexpected turn of events, Thannicha announced her withdrawal from Sararat’s case on her Facebook page on November 24. “Today, I came to talk with some seniors, and tomorrow I am going to withdraw from Am’s case. I will also sue her as well. End.” This announcement surprised many, as Thannicha had been a staunch advocate for Sararat, despite facing significant criticism. She previously expressed confidence in Sararat’s innocence and showed determination in her defence. In an interview with ThaiRath, Thannicha explained her decision, stating that she gave all to Sararat but felt unprotected and unsupported by her client. “I have been working hard for the client and taking the best care of her. However, when things happened, my client… I don’t want to criticise her too much. In short, the client should protect the lawyer as well. The client should be straightforward with the lawyer and avoid blaming the lawyer. Am and I will part ways here. That’s it.” Thannicha also told MGR Online that her decision to withdraw was not influenced by the recent court’s sentencing. She clarified that she resolved to leave the case before the verdict due to disagreements with her client over legal strategies. She expressed confidence that Sararat would be able to find a new lawyer despite the case’s complexities and stated that she would no longer visit Sararat in prison. Shore thing: Foreign couple shamed by locals for public sex on Phuket beach Photo by wavebreakmedia_micro via Freepik Another foreign couple faced criticism from locals in Phuket after they were caught engaging in sexual activity on Kata Beach yesterday. Another foreign couple faced criticism from locals in Phuket after they were caught engaging in sexual activity on Kata Beach yesterday. A picture of the foreign couple, whose nationalities remain unidentified, was shared by the Phuket Times. The page posted the image for its followers today, November 25, with a caption that read… “It’s windy and chilly. Foreign tourists were caught in a standard sexual position on Kata Beach, Phuket.” The image of the couple was shared in the comments section. Fortunately, no video was attached despite numerous requests from the page’s followers. From the photo, it appears the person who took it was very close to the couple. Many Thai netizens criticised the couple for their explicit act, while others shared their experiences of witnessing public sexual encounters in various locations across Phuket. Several commenters noted that such behaviour seemingly becomes commonplace in the province. “Edited picture? Video evidence, please!” “I caught another couple on Kalim Beach at 2am. It happened in a popular spot near a pink cafe.” “This is the behaviour of a few bad farangs and has nothing to do with Phuket officials. Stop blaming the government. You should become prime minister yourself and see what you can do about this. Funny comments are better than pointless complaints.” “Did you sneak over to take their picture?” “Stop blurring the image. People like this deserve to be shamed.” “This isn’t news. It’s something that’s been happening for a long time.” This incident is expected to conclude in the same manner as similar cases previously reported. Foreign couples caught engaging in public sexual acts often manage to avoid charges, unlike some Thai couples who face fines for similar behaviour. In an unsettling development that's rapidly grabbing headlines, authorities are launching an urgent investigation into a Buddhist monastery in Phichit province, Thailand. Local police and health officials, responding to reports of 41 corpses allegedly used for meditation courses at the religious establishment, will today visit the aforementioned institution in Ban Noi, a sub-district of Pho Thale. Central to this case is determining whether the Ban Noi monastery has followed the proper legal procedures in housing these bodies. The required documentation would include death certificates and approvals from relatives of the deceased. A significant portion of the investigation will revolve around utilising forensic science to establish whether the individuals died naturally. A disciple at the monastery, referred to as 'Prapawarin', shared some insights with the media. She revealed that her meditation regimen included walking contemplatively for an hour, an hour of seated meditation thrice daily, and a two-hour nightly session in the presence of coffins holding corpses. Initially scared, Prapawarin claimed that she gradually became desensitised to the peculiar setting, finding calm in the process. Parallel to this startling revelation, in Kamphaeng Phet province's Khanu Woralaksaburi district, another unlicensed monastery was scrutinised. All 12 corpses discovered there have now been identifiably linked to known individuals. No charges have been filed against the abbot of this monastery yet. An official from the National Office of Buddhism in Kamphaeng Phet confirmed that this establishment has discontinued its controversial meditation course. This course purportedly promised participants would attain supernatural abilities, namely enhanced sight and hearing. As the police, health and Buddhist officials dig deeper into these monasteries' actions, the story undoubtedly prompts questions about meditation practices and their intersection with religious observance, not only in Thailand but globally. A poignant merit-making ceremony took place today to honour the young victims of last month's devastating school bus accident in Pathum Thani province, Thailand. The event was conducted on-site near Zeer Rangsit Shopping Centre, where the fatal accident occurred, bringing together senior officials, local figures, and community representatives. The ceremony, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, offered solace for the grieving community and an avenue to express unified sorrow. Last month, we reported on the school bus accident which claimed a shocking number of innocent lives and left several others injured. Today, more than just memorialising the victims, the Thai government has taken a definitive stance against such tragedies. Legal action has been initiated against those held accountable, and severe repercussions for neglecting safety standards in public transportation were enforced. A major step taken was permanently pulling the public transport license of the bus owner. This action signifies the strict enforcement of safety regulations aimed at halting such negligence in the future. However, the focus isn't merely punitive; the government has stressed on the importance of not prohibiting educational trips but ensuring safer implementation. Efforts to strengthen safety standards for public transport are also gaining momentum. The government is striving towards coordination amongst various agencies in order to ensure a lesser risk environment for public transport users. The aftermath of the tragedy has seen an outpouring of support for the victims, largely in the form of financial aid. The Office of the Prime Minister, insurance companies, and campaigns led by Deputy Interior Minister Sabida Thaiseth have raised funds to assist survivors and provide much-needed support to the families of the deceased. Minister Anutin, in his address, underscored the vital role of collaboration between government and private sectors in enhancing public safety. He promoted the role of citizens as watchdogs, urging them to report any safety concerns. Today's ceremony, steeped in grief and reflection, paints the picture of a community determined to ensure that such a tragedy does not occur again. The steps being taken by the government offer a beacon of progress in the seemingly entrenched issues of public transportation safety. A unified front of citizens, officials, and social leaders seems to ensure that the victims of the Pathum Thani school bus accident did not die in vain. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-25

Dangerous fake spirits claiming lives from methanol toxicity are sending shockwaves through our neighbouring country. Numerous victims have been hospitalised, with several fatalities reported following consumption of these unlawfully produced alcoholic beverages tainted with methanol. Deceptively harmless, methanol is a highly poisonous industrial substance finds its way into counterfeit or home distilled spirits. The symptoms of methanol poisoning start off mirroring typical alcohol-induced symptoms i.e. a woozy head or euphoric feeling. However, the impact of this toxic adulterant can swiftly escalate with consequences such as sight-impairment, respiratory difficulties, aggressive body spasms, the body becoming precariously acidic and even death. If one suspects methanol poisoning, it's crucial to seek immediate medical assistance. Managing methanol poisoning involves prompt, supportive medical attention. This often requires administering ethanol to slow the body's toxic processing of methanol. In several instances, hemodialysis becomes necessary to save lives by extracting the methanol and its harmful derivatives from the bloodstream. Despite these treatments, the urgency of the medical intervention determines the effectiveness and a chance for recovery. In light of these disturbing occurrences, authorities are sternly advising the public to exercise caution while procuring alcoholic beverages. Illegally distilled spirits, unproven liquors or uncertified herb-based concoctions should be eschewed. It is crucial to source alcohol only from regulated, trustworthy sources. Those experiencing any symptoms post-consumption of dubious alcohol must urgently seek medical help to ward off the possibility of irreversible health complications or worse, fatality. Early this morning, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded as the Ratchamanu Task Force, stationed in Mae Sot district of Tak, rescued 39 individuals, the majority from Sri Lanka. The victims claimed they were trapped in Myanmar's Myawaddy, having been enticed there with illusory job guarantees. The task force swooped in at 5am, intercepting the victims as they attempted to cross the Moei River into the Mae Sot district. The rescue operation was authorised by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Thailand, reflecting the urgency of the situation. The group consisted of a diverse mix - 32 Sri Lankans, 5 Nepalese, 1 Malaysian and a Russian. They reported being ensnared by a Chinese-owned business in Myawaddy, with the verbal obligation, and subsequent reality, of their work conditions proving to be starkly contrasting. Once entrenched in Myanmar, they were coerced into extensive work hours. Unbearable as it was, the group reached out to their respective peers and the embassy for help. Their desperate plea led to the prompt intervention by the Ratchamanu Task Force. The exact region of their employment falls under the jurisdiction of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army. This area is directly opposite Thailand’s Phop Phra district in the Tak province, hence the quick response by the Tak-based task force. This operation has shed light on the grim conditions of migrant workers and serves as a stern reminder of the exploitative labour practices some industries still partake in. At a time when sports hallmarks transcend national boundaries, 21-years-old Thai golfer Atthaya "Jeeno" Thitikul has made a historic indent in the annals of professional women's golf. Beating competitors at California's esteemed CME Group Tour Championship, Thitikul has grown her career's LPGA Tour victory account to four, all while hitting the winner's circle with an eye-popping US$4m (Bt138 million) cheque. Earlier the same week, Thitikul scooped another trophy and a significant US$1 million payout from the Aon Risk Reward Challenge, making her cumulative single-week earnings a whopping US$5m. To better illustrate the magnitude of this achievement, many pro golfers don't amass such earnings throughout their entire careers. Swapping her club for modicum, Thitikul shared post-victory, "My million is good enough, at Aon. I'm not really thinking about the prize money that much". Her sentiment mirrors that of Lydia Ko, a pro golfer from New Zealand, underscoring that their primary ambition is to bolster the profile of golf, not pocket gains. Initiating her golf voyage at merely six, Thitikul was guided through the choices of golf and tennis by her father. The decision clearly paid off, with her harvest of titles in 2021 alone including the venerated Ladies European Tour Order of Merit, Rookie of the Year, and Players' Player of the Year. This followed the accolades of two victories, three secondary finishes, and an additional nine top-ten endgames. Adding another feather to her golfing cap, Thitikul clinched the no.1 worldwide rank on October 31, 2022, a first for her. Capping yet another successful year, the Thai athlete also collected the 2022 LPGA Tour's Rookie of the Year award. As of now, her LPGA Tour titles tally is firmly placed at four, inclusive of the 2024 Dow Championship she bagged in tandem with Chinese golfer Ruoning Yin. As a beacon of promise in the golfing circuit, Atthaya Thitikul's trajectory of success remains a compelling spectacle. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-25
