Police yesterday arrested an 18 year old Thai man at his home in Bangkok for tricking at least 21 young girls into sending him explicit videos and blackmailing them. Two Thai mothers brought their daughters to file a complaint against a Thai man, later identified as 18 year old Kanchai, at a police station in the northern province of Chiang Rai, and an arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday, November 12. Chiang Rai police officers coordinated with Thailand’s Action Taskforce for Information Technology Crime Suppression (TACTICS) in Bangkok and successfully arrested the suspect yesterday. The arrest was made at his home in the Saimai district of Bangkok. Kanchai was known among his friends and on social media as Gus Saimai. “Gus” is his nickname, and “Saimai” is the location of his home and where people found him causing chaos. According to a report on ThaiRath, the two girls are cousins, one aged 13 and the other 14. They met Kanchai via Facebook applications but Kanchai used different accounts to contact the girls. Kanchai talked to the girls until they trusted him and he then tricked them into sending explicit videos. Kanchai later posted the videos on his Facebook and Instagram accounts, demanding the victims pay him 100 baht if they wanted the videos deleted. The girls did not have enough money, so they told their mothers, who filed a complaint leading to Kanchai’s arrest. Kanchai confessed that he had done similar things to 19 other young victims but they did not dare to take legal action against him. The second suspect, identified as 38 year old Khamsing, from Laos, was pursued by another police team after he stole a long-tail boat to escape across the Mekong River. The pursuit began at Wat Khumpapradit, Pon Sa village. Khamsing was armed and resisted attempts to apprehend him, leading to a tense hour-long standoff before he surrendered. Upon being detained, Khamsing’s black bag was searched, revealing drug paraphernalia. The sequence of events began when Phaitoon Chansema, a lieutenant inspector, received a report of a traffic accident at the Baan Thewi intersection in the Tha Bo district. A white pickup truck collided with a white sedan, rendering the pickup inoperable. Khamsing and the deceased fled the scene in the sedan, driven by a passing local. Police tracked them to Tha Bo market, where they switched to a motorised tricycle towards Pon Sa village. Grenade explosion Upon arrival, police were closing in when the deceased attempted to use a grenade to create a diversion. However, the grenade exploded accidentally, resulting in his death. Khamsing managed to escape unscathed, stealing a boat in a bid to cross into Laos but was apprehended on the river. Sataporn, a 51 year old man, who rents the house where the explosion occurred, recounted the events. He explained that a motorised tricycle carrying two men stopped outside. Shortly after, police arrived, instructing everyone to flee. The suspects tried to enter the house and an explosion followed, damaging the structure and injuring a municipal officer from Pon Sa who was at the location to pay for electrical repairs. The intense scene left locals alarmed. It was suspected that drugs were involved, as police detected a drug-like odour upon inspecting the pickup truck. Despite Khamsing’s claim that he was merely hitching a ride to work in Udon Thani, police remain sceptical and are thoroughly investigating the incident, reported KhaoSod. Sitthiphong Kanta, affectionately known as “Moo Art,” was a dedicated officer at the Sa-iab Police Station. The incident took place when he was in pursuit of a suspect believed to be under the influence of methamphetamine. At approximately 2.20pm yesterday, November 13, the police officer joined a team from the Sa-iab Police Station to conduct a routine patrol in the area near the Pha Ing Bridge in Sa-iab, Song, Phrae province. During the patrol, they encountered a construction worker, identified as 37 year old Thep, who was working on the nearby concrete bridge. Thep appeared startled and attempted to flee after Sitthiphong approached him. The suspect ran towards the riverbank and jumped into the water. Sitthiphong, in a bid to apprehend him, courageously followed suit by diving into the river. The pursuit turned into a tragedy when Sitthiphong did not resurface. The police quickly coordinated with Nattapakal Srikampa, the head of the Sa-iab Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, and rescue teams from the Sa-iab subdistrict, Mae Yom National Park, and Song Ruam Jai Volunteer Rescue Association. They conducted an extensive search for Sitthiphong in the river. His body was eventually discovered at 6.15pm. Medical professionals confirmed that the cause of death was drowning due to a lack of oxygen. The family of the deceased did not request an autopsy, as they were satisfied with the conclusion. The atmosphere was mournful as Songkran Thipo, the chief of the Sa-iab Police Station, along with other officers, recovered the body of Sitthiphong, surrounded by grieving family members and neighbours. Their sorrow was palpable as they came together to honour the young officer’s memory. The investigation uncovered over 40 explicit videos stored in a group chat, accessible to all members. Bangkok Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, echoed similar sentiments as he underscored the capital’s adoption of smart technology for better governance and public demand handling. The Governor referred to the AI-driven Traffy Fondue app, a ground-breaking initiative improving the transparency and efficiency of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Sittipunt noted, “A real smart city means the adoption of appropriate technology which allows people to solve issues equally.” Ushering more transparency and public engagement, open data initiatives are enabling residents to track government budgets and policies online. Further supplementing this effort, Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Prasert Jantararuangthong revealed the City Data Platform project. The initiative aims to gather essential data from 175 cities to help address urban challenges, from city planning to energy and transport issues. The Thai government is also seeking collaboration with the Board of Investment to draw big tech companies to the country, boosting Thailand’s stature as a regional hub for smart, sustainable city innovation. Police arrested a Thai man in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok yesterday after he posted a death threat against kindergarten students in the Isaan province of Maha Sarakham on a Facebook group. The suspect, identified as 35 year old Apisit, posted the threat in a Facebook group for residents of Kosum Phisai district in Maha Sarakham at around 4am yesterday, November 12. In the post, Apisit stated his bone-chilling intentions. “No later than April of next year, there will be news of a mass shooting at a kindergarten in Maha Sarakham province. Wait for it. Make yourself ready.” An investigation into the Facebook account revealed that it belonged to Apisit. Though originally from Maha Sarakham, he lived in Nonthaburi for work. His family home is located in the Wapi Pathum district, but he previously worked in the Kosum Phisai district before moving to Nonthaburi. Further investigation led police to arrest Apisit at his rented room in the Bang Kruay district of Nonthaburi. Apisit confessed to his actions, though the motive behind his threat was not disclosed. Apisit was charged under Section 384 of the Criminal Law for intentionally spreading false information or rumours that could incite public panic. This offence carries a penalty of up to one month in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both. He also violated Section 14(1) of the Computer Crime Act, which prohibits the introduction of false information into a computer system in a way that could cause harm to third parties or the public. This carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 100,000 baht. Apisit was then transferred to Kosum Phisai Police Station in Maha Sarakham for further legal proceedings. This chilling threat has reminded the public of the mass shooting that occurred at a daycare centre in Nong Bua Lamphu on October 6, 2022.
