  1. With the New Year travel rush expected to reach unprecedented levels, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is calling on Thai airlines to significantly enhance their operations to accommodate increased demand. The directive came after a strategic meeting held on 6th November with key stakeholders in Thai aviation, including Thai Airways International, the Thai Airlines Association (TAA), Airports of Thailand, and the Department of Airports. The CAAT plans to bolster the holiday travel network by urging airlines to add more flights, open new routes, increase seating capacity, and extend operating hours. These actions are targeted at preventing chaos during peak travel periods, especially around the holiday season. To ensure travellers aren't burdened with fare hikes, the CAAT will keep a close watch on ticket prices from 28th December to 2nd January. CAAT Deputy Director Sarun Benjanirat confirmed that airports would extend their operational hours to ensure no passengers are left stranded. "We want to ensure that everyone reaches their destination smoothly and safely," Benjanirat stated. Advice for travellers includes booking tickets well in advance, ideally two to three months ahead, to secure better rates. Domestic travellers can check price limits on the CAAT's website to avoid unexpected costs. Passengers should also allow extra time for check-in and security procedures during this busy period. In the case of delays, CAAT regulations will enforce compensation measures, ranging from refreshments to full refunds based on delay durations. With these measures, CAAT aims to make holiday travel as seamless as possible, allowing passengers to focus on the festivities rather than logistics. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-07

Announced by Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong at the World Travel Market 2024 in London, the plan centres on collaboration with airlines and foreign ambassadors to restore international flights fully. Sorawong, speaking at the prestigious event, highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance Thai tourism's appeal, including investing in infrastructure and streamlining visa processes. Post-event, he plans to engage with ambassadors from key European and Middle Eastern markets and airline representatives to strategise for the 2025 high season. The ministry is working with the Transport and Finance Ministries on potential subsidies like fuel price and tax reductions for airlines. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reports anticipations of welcoming 9.6 million long-haul tourists this year, aiming for over 896 billion baht in revenue with next year’s target. With Thailand's participation at the WTM, 42 tourism operators engaged in an expected 950 business meetings, potentially generating over 898 million baht. Princess Ubolratana supported efforts by promoting sustainable tourism initiatives. Local tourism expert, Nithi Subhongsang of Nutty’s Adventures, stressed the importance of maintaining policy continuity and promoting lesser-known destinations to prevent overtourism. 5. A Patong motorcycle taxi driver faces legal action after being caught on video slapping another rider in Soi Saensabai. The incident, which took place yesterday, November 6, quickly circulated on local social media, igniting discussions on the conduct of motorcycle taxi drivers in the area. Patong Police have identified the driver involved as Patiwat. He was summoned to the Patong Police Station for questioning around 7pm yesterday. Patiwat confessed to being the individual in the video and admitted to hitting the other motorcycle rider in the head. According to the police report, Patiwat claimed that the altercation stemmed from a traffic accident. “Police officers therefore recorded the personal history and tested Patiwat for drugs to proceed with legal action.” However, the outcome of the drug test remains undisclosed, reported The Phuket News. In response to the incident, Patong Police Chief Chalermchai Hirasawat mandated that numerous Patong motorcycle taxi drivers attend a meeting on November 5. During this assembly, the police clarified the standards of behaviour expected from the drivers. This gathering was prompted by a series of violent episodes involving Patong motorbike taxi drivers over the past year. In related news, Patong police in Phuket apprehended a motorcycle taxi driver following a heated altercation between tourists and a local taxi driver. The incident unfolded on October 31 at the intersection near the football field on Thawiwong Road, leading to several charges being filed against the motorcycle driver. Around 5.30pm, two tourists had just boarded an electric vehicle (EV) taxi they had booked through a legal app, intending to head to Phuket International Airport. As they got into the cab, the motorcycle taxi driver approached and prevented them from closing the door, insisting they leave the vehicle. The taxi driver explained to the motorcycle driver that the tourists had legitimately ordered the ride and were not at fault. 7. A rather unexpected visitor disrupted a classroom session in the western province of Kanchanaburi when a cow suddenly charged into the room, causing students to scatter in panic. The incident occurred yesterday, November 6, and was captured on video by a teacher named Billie, who shared the footage on TikTok. The unusual incident occurred while Billie was conducting a lesson, adding a dose of surprise and excitement to the school day. The video captured the moment the cow entered the classroom, prompting students to flee in all directions. A man, whose connection to the cow remains unknown, attempted to guide the animal out. Despite the initial chaos, the cow lingered in the classroom briefly before eventually finding its way out without causing harm to anyone. The origin of the cow remains a mystery, though it is speculated that it might have wandered in from nearby grazing land or a cattle pen close to the school. The cow’s unexpected visit sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many netizens expressing their amusement and disbelief at the situation. “Each day brings something unexpected,” Billie remarked in the TikTok post, highlighting the spontaneous nature of the incident. The post quickly gained attention, with many viewers commenting on the rare and amusing occurrence. The incident unfolded without any injuries, which was a relief to both students and staff. The school has not reported any further disturbances, and it seems the cow’s adventure ended without any further issues. This quirky event has not only entertained those involved but also captured the interest of the wider online community. Social media users were quick to latch onto the humour of the situation, with many sharing laughter and jokes about the cow’s classroom antics. The video posted by Billie, tagged with phrases such as “funny teacher” and “adorable teacher,” resonated with many, demonstrating how a surprising incident can momentarily divert the routine of school life. The school has not issued any formal statements regarding the event, and it remains a light-hearted anecdote in the daily lives of those involved, reported KhaoSod. 8. Central Thailand: Pensioner turns himself in after fatal land dispute Photo courtesy of KhaoSod A 68 year old Thai pensioner turned himself in to the police after fatally stabbing his neighbour over a long-standing land dispute in Kamphaeng Phet province. 9. A 68 year old Thai pensioner turned himself in to the police after fatally stabbing his neighbour over a long-standing land dispute in Kamphaeng Phet province. The incident occurred outside their homes, and the suspect fled on foot for three days, covering 30 kilometres through forests to reach his daughter’s house before turning himself in. The pensioner, Chamnong’s daughter, Aoy, explained that her father did not intend to run away but was in shock after the incident. She mentioned that Chamnong had been involved in an altercation with 32 year old Chaiya, who allegedly provoked him at his doorstep. Chamnong claimed self-defence, stating that Chaiya, who appeared intoxicated, threatened him and initiated a physical confrontation. “Chaiya was shouting insults and threatening to shoot me, so I acted in self-defence, fearing for my life.” Chamnong further explained that after being attacked, he was forced to retaliate with a knife to protect himself, believing that Chaiya might be armed. The long-standing land dispute over boundaries had been a persistent issue, despite previous mediation efforts by local leaders. Chamnong expressed surprise that the conflict had escalated to such violence. Victim’s family Meanwhile, the victim’s family remains sceptical of Chamnong’s account and plans to oppose his bail application. They believe Chamnong’s actions were intentional rather than defensive. The family and villagers gathered at Wat Khlong Pla Soi, where Chaiya’s funeral is being held, awaiting further police investigation and hoping for justice. Chaiya’s mother, Manee, conveyed her disbelief regarding the suspect’s claims of self-defence and non-escape. She urged the police to conduct a fair investigation and demanded that Chamnong apologise for the death of her son. “I cannot accept that he claims not to have fled and was merely regrouping. It is not true. I want justice for my son.” Chaiya’s wife, Khemintra, also questioned the self-defence narrative, stating that Chaiya was unarmed and that there were no signs of a struggle at the scene. She argued that the level of violence used was excessive and unnecessary. “If it were truly self-defence, one stab wound would have sufficed.” The deceased’s wife added that the land dispute originated from natural elevation differences that had not been altered, contrary to claims. According to her, Chamnong had previously taken soil from their property to fill his land. Concerned for her safety, Khemintra is determined to contest Chamnong’s bail, reported KhaoSod. 11. In a touching tale of devotion that could soften even the hardest of hearts, an Englishman makes an annual pilgrimage to Thailand to honour the memory of his late wife. Andrew, a former soldier turned factory worker, jet-sets to Udon Thani every year to pay tribute to Samorn Prasomsri, his beloved Thai wife who passed away almost five years ago after a battle with cancer. Reporters from Wat Si Suwanmongkol, located in Ban Si Mueang, Ban Dung District, caught up with Andrew today, November 7. The locals know Andrew well; his story of enduring love has become a cherished legend in this village. The love affair began in Pattaya, where Andrew met Samorn, a widow with three children—one daughter and two sons. Their romance blossomed, leading them to build a life together in Ban Si Mueang, complete with homes for the family. Andrew’s fondness for Samorn was unparalleled; he tenderly refers to her as “his last love.” Despite their years apart since her passing, his heart remains tethered to her. During her illness, Andrew cared for Samorn with unwavering devotion. Her death left him in a state of despair, leading him to drink heavily. Concerned for his wellbeing, his sister intervened, bringing him back to England. Yet, grief couldn’t sever his connection to Thailand or the sacred spot where Samorn’s ashes rest. Every year, except for the last when a heart valve surgery kept him grounded, Andrew returns to Wat Si Suwanmongkol, reported Channel 7. There, he meticulously tends to the area around Samorn’s stupa, replacing wilted flowers daily despite the sweltering heat. His commitment to this yearly ritual has not only drawn admiration from locals but has also become a beacon of unwavering love and respect. Andrew’s annual pilgrimage is an ode to his wife, and he doesn’t hesitate to praise the qualities of Thai women, leaving the village’s women both impressed and envious of the depth of his affection. “This wife will be my last.” By Bob Scott Picture courtesy of Channel 7 Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-07

Housekeeper denies stealing 20 million baht gold in Khon Kaen Photo courtesy of KhaoSod A startling case of theft has emerged from a gold shop in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen, where a housekeeper has been accused of stealing gold worth over 20 million baht since 2021. 13. A startling case of theft has emerged from a gold shop in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen, where a housekeeper has been accused of stealing gold worth over 20 million baht since 2021. Despite clear CCTV evidence, the accused continues to deny the charges in court. Footage from a CCTV camera in the gold shop located in Ban Phai district, Khon Kaen province, shows the housekeeper seizing a gold necklace and slipping it into her pocket when left alone at the store. The shop owner first noticed discrepancies on September 9, when a gold ornament was seen falling from the housekeeper’s apron in the kitchen area. Upon questioning, she claimed the gold must have slipped from the display case into her apron. However, the CCTV footage contradicted this explanation, revealing that she had indeed taken the gold from the showcase. The shop’s investigation into records uncovered that the housekeeper had stolen gold jewellery on more than 47 occasions, accumulating over 700 baht in gold, equating to a value exceeding 20 million baht. Social media posts on the housekeeper’s personal Facebook account added to the suspicion, showing her purchasing land, a new motorcycle, and her daughter wearing a large gold necklace, all of which seemed unusual given her employment status. The legal proceedings against the housekeeper saw the initial court sentencing her to 235 years in prison without suspension. Despite this, she has appealed the verdict. The shop owner offered her multiple chances to return the stolen gold but she only returned a portion, worth approximately 7 million baht. Initially confessing when caught, she later hired a lawyer to deny all charges in court and even filed a counter-suit against the shop owner. The court ordered her to compensate the remaining 18 million baht, including interest but she has continued to appeal. The shop owner expressed astonishment at the housekeeper’s persistence in denying the theft, given the overwhelming evidence from the CCTV footage. The owner questioned the rationale behind her reluctance to return the stolen assets. The total value of the 700 baht of gold stolen initially was over 20 million baht, and the partial restitution of 7 million baht still leaves a significant amount to be compensated as per the court’s decision, reported KhaoSod. “I don’t understand why she continues to delay when the evidence is so clear. Why doesn’t she return all the stolen assets?” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-07

The younger brother of the 30 year old influencer, Satomi Yamanishi, better known as Satton, used her Instagram account last month to share news of the accident and Satton’s condition. “She was in a motorcycle accident in Thailand and is unconscious. She will most likely remain this way for a while. I will halt all her activities, including Instagram, as it might be overwhelming for everyone who has supported her.” On November 1, her brother provided an update with the tragic news, posting in both Japanese and Korean. “I would like to share some sad news with everyone who has supported my sister. My sister Satton remained unconscious for about a month after a motorcycle accident last month. My family and I stayed by her side every day, caring for her as best as we could but she passed away peacefully at 6.06am on October 31. “She made it this far because of your support. The messages of love and encouragement from everyone brought great strength and comfort to our family. On behalf of our family, I would like to thank everyone who supported Satton. Tangmo’s death: 4 suspects stand firm in innocence ahead of verdict Photo via SiamNews Four suspects in the death of renowned Thai actress Nida “Tangmo” Patcharaveerapong visited Nonthaburi Provincial Court today, November 7, to plead their innocence for the last time before the court delivers its verdict. 17. Four suspects in the death of renowned Thai actress Nida “Tangmo” Patcharaveerapong visited Nonthaburi Provincial Court today, November 7, to plead their innocence for the last time before the court delivers its verdict. The lifeless body of the famous Thai actress, Tangmo, was found on February 26, 2022, at Phibun Songkhram Pier along the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. Tangmo died after going on a boat trip with six friends and her manager on February 24 including: Idsarin “Gatick” Juthasuksawat (Tangmo’s friend and primary manager) Wisapat “Sand” Manomairat (transwoman manager) Tanupat “Por” Lerttaweewit (boat owner) Phaiboon “Robert” Trikanjananun (unlicensed boat driver) Nitas “Job” Kiratisoonthisathorn (mutual friend) The friends sought help from the police and rescue team at around 10.40pm that night, claiming that Tangmo fell off the boat and went missing. The rescue team, along with Thai celebrities, family, and friends, spent over 40 hours searching for Tangmo until the afternoon of February 26, when Tangmo’s older brother spotted her body. Tangmo’s death became a major topic of interest, sparking multiple theories about the cause of her death. Sand revealed to the media that Tangmo urinated at the back of the boat and accidentally fell into the river. Everyone on the boat admitted to drinking alcohol but insisted that they were not drunk. As the group of friends did not immediately report the incident to the police, some people pointed fingers at them and suspected them of being involved in the actress’s death. Another Thai man, Pheem “Em” Dharmatheerasanee, later became involved in the case as he allegedly advised the group on how to avoid legal charges after the accident. Confident in innocence Both the public and officials searched for evidence that could explain the cause of Tangmo’s death. Almost every security camera along their boat route was reviewed, and netizens scoured all the actress’s social media posts to uncover the cause of the tragic accident. However, no concrete evidence was found. As of now, the cause of Tangmo’s death remains a topic of controversy, and legal proceedings against those involved are ongoing. Police issued different legal charges against the six suspects. The primary charge against those on the boat is committing reckless acts causing the death of another person. The penalty for this offence is imprisonment for up to 10 years and a fine of up to 200,000 baht. Two men on the boat, Por and Robert, eventually admitted to reckless conduct that caused Tangmo’s death while the other four suspects denied all the allegations made against them. Today, November 7, the Nonthaburi Provincial Court summoned the four suspects who denied the allegations including Gatick, Sand, Job, and Em for the final examination before the court’s verdict. Sand was the only person to give an interview with the media before entering the court. She insisted that she was not reckless and was confident in her innocence. However, she acknowledged that she could not predict the court’s decision and did not want to interfere with the legal process. The schedule for the release of the court’s verdict in Tangmo’s case has not yet been set. On February 24 of last year and this year, Tangmo’s fans continued to place her pictures and flowers at Phibun Songkhram Pier in remembrance of her death. Some left messages for Tangmo, wishing her happiness wherever she may be. By Petch Petpailin Photo via SiamNews Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-07

  19. Late last night, Wang Thonglang police, alongside the Metropolitan Police Bureau, unearthed an illegal gambling operation run by Chinese nationals in Bangkok. The raid targeted a repurposed building on Soi Sahakarn Pramoon, which had been a Chinese restaurant before it shut down during the pandemic. Converting the space into a covert gambling hub, authorities nabbed 20 individuals of Chinese, Taiwanese, and Thai descent, including eight engrossed in gambling at the time. Police investigations revealed that the group used social media and other communication tools to discreetly arrange these gambling gatherings, frequently changing venues to evade law enforcement—a method referred to as "running casinos." During the raid, poker games were underway, and participants reportedly admitted to their involvement in the illegal activities. Consequently, the suspects face charges for operating an unauthorized gambling den and unlawful gambling participation. The ongoing investigation aims to identify further group members and curb similar clandestine gambling operations in the area. The building still bore its old restaurant signage but had long ceased its culinary services, serving instead as the hub for these covert activities, reported The Pattaya News. 21. In a significant turn of events, Bangkok's investigative police have arrested 34-year-old saleswoman Panida in the Ramkhamhaeng area for allegedly orchestrating a complex scam involving air conditioning units. The arrest followed a detailed probe by city police, unearthing Panida's deceptive tactics aimed at defrauding multiple clients. The saga began to unfold last October when discrepancies in Panida's transactions first raised suspicions. Employed by a reputable company that deals with air conditioning systems, Panida reportedly manipulated clients, including second-hand car tent owners, convincing them to purchase air conditioners that never existed. Panida leveraged her position to deceive these clients, inducing repeated fund transfers into her personal account under the false pretext of securing air conditioning units that were purportedly out of stock. However, her charade was short-lived. Investigators say that she forged communications to fabricate orders, pocketing proceeds and causing financial disparities within her company. One specific incident in September highlighted her modus operandi, where a fake order she orchestrated left her company 69,000 baht short after she falsely reimbursed only a portion of the proceeds. Eventually, clients realised they had never made these purchases, adding fuel to the suspicions. The unraveling scam gained further traction when it was discovered that her fraudulent activities funded her online gambling addiction. This financial pressure reportedly drove her to perpetuate the deceit. Police apprehended her at a car park in the Ramkhamhaeng housing estate and have now transferred her case to the Huamark Police Station for further proceedings. Panida faces several serious charges, including theft, embezzlement, and document forgery, suggesting the depth of her fraudulent activities. Her arrest marks a crucial step in cracking down on such deceitful schemes, reinforcing the vigilance of Bangkok's law enforcement against fraud. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-06

  23. Thap Lan National Park faced tragedy as Officer Warawan Anchuen, 40, collapsed and died while patrolling the remote and rugged forest areas near the Lam Plai Mat dam yesterday. The emergency services received distress signals at 3.30pm, but despite exhaustive CPR efforts by his fellow officers, Warawan could not be revived. The mission to reach Warawan was fraught with challenges due to the park’s challenging terrain. Rescue teams required over three hours, using boats and hiking through thick forest, to reach his location. Even with expedient efforts, Warawan had succumbed before help could arrive. Head of Thap Lan National Park, Prawat Chanthatep, has deployed over 40 personnel, collaborating with the Hook 31 Rescue Team from Nakhon Ratchasima, to retrieve Warawan’s body. The complex operation includes navigating steep hills and dense jungle, further complicated by Warawan's imposing stature, being over 180cm and weighing more than 90kg. By late evening, the team had only managed to transport his body halfway to safety. Warawan, lovingly known as Nokthai, embarked on his career in forest protection a decade ago, climbing from contract roles at Thap Lan to a government position at the Prachinburi Fire Control Station, before returning to Thap Lan’s patrol unit in 2022. He was respected for his dedication and service, patrolling the park’s crucial 4th management zone. On the fateful day, Warawan had set out with colleagues and researchers from Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Research Station at 10am to observe wildlife. His sudden collapse came as a shock, especially given his history of good health, noted by family. His niece recounted a poignant goodbye as he left for work, not knowing it was their last farewell. The incident casts a shadow over the park community, highlighting both the dangers faced by those dedicated to protecting Thailand's natural reserves and the enduring commitment of individuals like Warawan Anchuen.
