  2. Thai Airways International (THAI) is on the verge of ending its rehabilitation scheme, with the expected departure from the plan set for mid-2025. Key beneficiaries of this move include major creditors, particularly Bangkok Bank (BBL) and Krungthai Bank (KTB), who are presented with multiple debt repayment options. In recent submissions to the Stock Exchange of Thailand, THAI's management expressed confidence in achieving positive shareholder equity by February next year, preparing for an exit from the rehabilitation plan in April. The Central Bankruptcy Court is anticipated to approve this exit by May, potentially allowing THAI's shares to resume trading by June. BBL and KTB are among the 36 entities with claims totalling 404 billion baht, belonging specifically to the majority debtor group carrying 31 billion baht in unsecured debt. Since the onset of THAI's restructuring in 2020, these banks have been provisioning for their exposure. THAI's exit strategy involves converting a portion of the debt into equity at a rate of 2.54 baht per share, alongside a repayment extension option of up to 15 years at a 1.5% interest rate. In the plan’s fourth quarter, THAI will issue 9.8 billion new shares to support this debt-to-equity conversion aiming to stabilise its financial standing. Notably, after the debt conversion, BBL's ownership in THAI could increase from 0.4% to 5.8%, an indication of its growing stake. As loan statuses improve, BBL's NPL ratio is expected to decrease, signalling enhanced financial health for the banks involved. KTB is also poised to see similar declines in its NPL ratio, promising a more robust position moving forward. The strategic moves THAI implements anticipate not only revitalising the airline but fortifying the creditors involved as both banks cautiously optimize their exposure and minimise non-performing loans. This scheduled recovery heralds a hopeful turning point for the beleaguered airline. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-22

  4. A ceiling collapse at Wat Pa Na Don in Udon Thani left monks and devotees in shock. The incident, which occurred while monks were performing a religious ceremony, resulted in no injuries but significant damage to the ceiling. The collapse happened during a gathering of monks and devotees at Wat Pa Na Don, located in Nong Na Kham, Mueang district, Udon Thani. As the monks were engaged in a ceremony, the ceiling of the sermon hall suddenly gave way, causing everyone present to run for their lives. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the ceiling suffered extensive damage. After the incident, monks and villagers worked together to clear the debris and plan for the installation of a new, more durable ceiling. The collapse was attributed to the accumulation of pigeon droppings under the ceiling, which weighed over 1 tonne. The weight became too much for the ceiling to bear, leading to its collapse. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Upon revisiting the temple, it was observed that the collapsed ceiling had not been fully cleaned. Pigeon droppings and feathers were still scattered on the floor among the broken ceiling pieces. Several pigeons were seen perched on the roof’s steel frame, seemingly unbothered by the incident. Locals had already collected the pigeon droppings to use as fertiliser for their fields. Meanwhile, preparations were underway for an upcoming Kathina ceremony from October 26 to October 27, although some villagers were hesitant to sit near the sermon hall for fear of another collapse. The 62 year old abbot of Wat Pa Na Don, Uthai Kamchalee recounted the terrifying moment when the ceiling fell. He described how the incident occurred while devotees were offering donations for the Kathina ceremony. Ceiling collapse Monks and devotees were discussing the event and reciting prayers when pigeons flying under the roof started pecking and fighting, leading to the ceiling’s collapse. The collapse began in the centre of the hall and quickly spread to where the monks were seated. The loud crash prompted everyone to flee in panic. One devotee sustained a minor forehead injury, but the five monks present were unharmed. The abbot mentioned that they would wait until after the Kathina ceremony to assess the funds available for repairs, estimating that the reconstruction would cost at least 200,000 baht (US$5,965). He noted that pigeons had entered the space through a hole in the roof’s gable, reported KhaoSod. This was the first time he had experienced such an incident, having only seen similar events in the news. He believed that the temple’s guardian spirits had caused the ceiling to collapse before the Kathina ceremony to prevent a more tragic outcome. He shuddered to think of the injuries that could have occurred if the ceiling had collapsed during the ceremony. By Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-10-22

  6. Thai police apprehended a group of Filipino pickpockets targeting tourists in a prominent hotel in the Phaya Thai area of Bangkok. The suspects are now facing charges for their night-time theft activities. The arrest occurred yesterday, October 21 at approximately 4pm, led by Police Major General Witwat Chinkam, along with other high-ranking officials from Thonglor Police Station. Seven Filipino suspects, aged between 28 and 67 years old, were detained in rooms 202, 204, 211, and 303 of a well-known hotel in the Sam Sen Nai subdistrict of Phaya Thai, Bangkok. The police also recovered the clothing worn by the suspects during their alleged crimes. Officers from Thonglor Police Station had been alerted to the presence of a foreign pickpocket gang targeting the bustling Sukhumvit and Asoke business districts. Following a complaint from a South Korean man who reported being targeted by a pickpocketing gang at Sukhumvit Soi 33 in Watthana district around 6.40pm on October 16, the investigation team promptly reviewed CCTV footage from the area and identified the suspects as Filipinos, said a police spokesperson. “We received reports of a foreign gang involved in pickpocketing around the Sukhumvit and Asoke areas, especially in business-heavy zones. Our investigation led us to identify the suspects and their hideout in a Phaya Thai hotel.” Following their crimes, the suspects would reportedly retreat to their hotel rooms in Phaya Thai. Acting on this information, the investigation team from Thonglor Police Station conducted a thorough search of the hotel, leading to the successful capture of the suspects, reported KhaoSod. Once apprehended, the suspects were found with the clothing they allegedly wore during the pickpocketing incidents. The police immediately transferred them, along with the evidence, to Thonglor Police Station for further legal proceedings. 7. FTI calls for fair e-commerce platform playing field Image: Negative Space/Pexels The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is urging the government to enforce stricter regulations on foreign e-commerce platforms and control the influx of low-cost products into Thailand. 8. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is urging the government to enforce stricter regulations on foreign e-commerce platforms and control the influx of low-cost products into Thailand. This call to action comes after a recent survey revealed that 35.1% of local entrepreneurs experienced a decline in sales due to inexpensive imports sold online. Vice-Chairman of the FTI, Peekthong Thongyai spoke on the shift in product trends, and areas with a higher degree of impact from the competition. “The impact is clearly seen in garments, furniture, plastic products, and packaging.” The survey, which included 175 entrepreneurs and FTI members, also found that 47.4% of respondents had not yet experienced a drop in sales, while 17.5% reported an increase. Despite these mixed results, a significant portion of respondents (67.4%) advocated for the government to ensure e-commerce platforms are registered as legal entities, facilitating value-added tax collection. Additional recommendations include enforcing consumer protection laws and simplifying the complaint process for substandard products (46.9%). Respondents also suggested that e-commerce platforms should be required to display state certification for products meeting safety standards (45.1%) and called for the inspection of online financial transactions (26.3%). In response to these concerns, the Industry Ministry has directed the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) to collaborate with the Customs Department to inspect the quality of imported goods, particularly those under TISI’s supervision. This initiative aims to curb the entry of low-cost, substandard products into the market. Despite these efforts, the FTI notes that many low-quality items continue to be imported into Thailand. The federation has previously expressed concerns about the entry of Chinese online retailer Temu, which draws in customers with its low prices. The FTI attributes Temu’s competitive pricing to lower operating costs in China, including cheaper energy and wages compared to Thailand. The federation fears that the increasing competition from such platforms could lead to more local factories shutting down, reported Bangkok Post. 10. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is rolling out creative initiatives to boost domestic tourism for the final quarter of 2024. Despite economic constraints, household debt, and localised flooding, TAT’s Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, Nithee Seeprae, remains optimistic about encouraging travel and increasing spending. Focusing on events like the Winter Festival, Loy Krathong, and the Chao Phraya Artistic Festival, TAT aims to captivate local tourists. By teaming up with the private sector, they plan to host sports and music events throughout Thailand as well. Additionally, TAT has launched campaigns such as Sook Tha Long 72 Styles, featuring an e-book outlining 72 unique travel routes across the country. These routes are designed around five experiences: Must Taste, Must Try, Must Buy, Must Seek, and Must See, promoting a fresh perspective on local travel. To engage tourists further, TAT has enlisted influential figures to create trendy travel vlogs, highlighting unique destinations like Uttaradit, linked with the movie Death Whisperer 2, and using Butter Bear as a charming mascot to guide visitors through Bangkok and historic sites. Of special note is the Moo Deng theme, wherein routes are built around visiting the beloved pygmy hippo at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, alongside other attractions. Despite many Thais turning towards international travel, domestic trips are expected to surpass 230 million by year-end, exceeding initial targets. TAT is keen on reinforcing longer stays, with the aim to increase average trip lengths to three days and ensure spending per trip reaches between 3,500 to 4,000 baht. Enthusiasm remains high for reaching nearly 1 trillion baht in domestic tourism revenue, marking a significant rebound for the sector. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-21

  12. A 50-year-old Thai woman, Laksamee, was arrested in Bangkok for her involvement in a call centre scam and money laundering scheme. Her capture follows her release from a foreign prison after serving time for similar crimes. The arrest, made in Prawet, came as a result of a Criminal Court warrant issued in June 2018. Laksamee was part of a criminal organisation, deceiving victims through impersonation and ruses. One victim was conned out of 120,000 baht after being tricked into believing they were implicated in serious crimes. Posing as law enforcement, the gang managed to defraud Laksamee’s phone and bank app, funneling finances for the scheme. The operation was cracked after combined efforts from Malaysian and Thai authorities led to a raid near the Thai border. Laksamee, reportedly lured into the crime ring in Malaysia, earned minimal wages whilst being manipulated by a Taiwanese ringleader. Despite denying direct involvement in the 120,000 baht fraud, she acknowledges her actions and now faces the consequences in Thailand. Expressing deep remorse, Laksamee advises others to avoid her fate, highlighting the heavy personal cost of crime. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-21

  14. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) faces pressure to resolve a 197.9 million baht (£4.5 million) backlog in land lease fees, per a formal request from the Rural Roads Department. This sum includes costs for using portions of Ratchaphruek Road and constructing two electric railway lines. Pichit Hoonsiri, the department's deputy director-general, highlighted that the BMA was notified about these unpaid dues. Notably, under a Transport Ministry regulation dated January 1, 2022, the ministry can levy charges on government entities using land earmarked for roadworks. The BMA owes 64.7 million baht (£1.5 million) for constructing the Green Line railway between Thon Buri and Bang Wa stations. Additionally, the agency must pay 177.5 million baht (£4 million) for using the land from 2022 to September 2023. Further costs include 400,000 baht (£9,200) for using 2,000 square meters of road island on Ratchaphruek Road for a power station near Bang Wa station. The department also seeks 20 million baht (£460,000) for using sections of Krung Thon Buri and Charoen Nakhon Roads for the Gold Line, billed annually at 6.3 million baht (£145,000) since 2022. The situation underscores ongoing challenges with inter-agency payments, especially important with continued urban expansion and infrastructure development in Bangkok. The outcome remains closely watched as negotiations progress. By Ryan Turner Image: Sawasdee Thailand -- 2024-10-21

The initiative began after an Arab restaurant owner on Soi 17, South Pattaya, reported that a group, allegedly from Myanmar, was harassing customers by soliciting money and even stealing food. Promptly responding to these concerns, immigration officers utilised community-shared images and local tips to track the suspects. This led them to an abandoned building where a group was found drinking. Among them was Saw, a 34-year-old Myanmar national, identified as one of the troublemakers by the restaurant owner. The swift action of the officers was praised by the restaurant owner, who expressed relief as the unwelcome activities impacted both tourists and residents. During the raid, two additional men were detained alongside Saw. All three individuals were found to be in the country unlawfully. The men were subsequently taken to the Chon Buri Immigration Office for documentation verification and will face legal proceedings before being deported. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts to maintain order and safety in Pattaya, safeguarding the community from unwanted activities. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-21

  18. An open audition for love has captivated the virtual world as one Sisaket beauty took to Facebook Live, laying down eight non-negotiable criteria in her hunt for Mr Right. Despite overwhelming social media buzz, Sayamon Unkam, known affectionately as Alice, is resolutely sticking to her structured love list, having learned the lessons of heartbreak by simply following her heart. Gone are the days of whimsical wish lists for Alice, she’s streamlined her quest to the essentials: families that jive, shared lifestyles, a passion for reading, introverted charm, simple living, fiscal savvy, and a romantic yet emotionally mature soul who’s calm, gentle, clean, and pleasant—no pesky hereditary quirks allowed. But don’t fear, gentlemen of 35 to 50, not all boxes must be ticked, said the 30 year old civil servant. “Meeting four or six key criteria is fine.” Alice also reassured divorced men need not worry but they need to confirm they’re legally unattached. Forget demanding a salary, the Sisaket beauty says she’s focused on finding someone who can nurture her and her family, not just buy them designer handbags. It’s about connecting on a substantial level, not striking gold. Alice argues that as one ages, standards shouldn’t plummet but rather, sharpen. Her criteria are neither capricious nor whimsical and she champions reliability and longevity over fleeting flings. Realise now, she urges, the enduring qualities that can weather love’s inevitable ebbs and flows. “Love can fade but shared values keep the dream alive.” Alice added that potential matches do not dive in thinking a partner equals paradise, it’s an illusion that waters down standards and life choices, Alice said. “Research even echoes the sentiment that your bliss isn’t bound to a relationship status. Design your own joy and don’t lower the bar just to pair up.” Eligible bachelors take note, Sayamon Unkam’s Facebook is open for contenders who are ready to prove their worth, reported KhaoSod. Alice is prepared to embrace a genuine connection with arms and heart wide open but only if you make the grade. Are you up to the challenge? The line-up begins on Facebook. 20. Police are searching for two Thai men who allegedly staged a road accident in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok before brutally assaulting a food delivery rider and stealing 1,500 baht in cash from him. A Thai netizen came forward seeking justice for the rider, 64 year old Chaiyaporn Poonmode. A female netizen shared a picture of Chaiyaporn with a bloody wound near his left eyebrow with a supporting caption. “Be careful. This incident occurred near the Caltex petrol station, Kaew Inn branch, in Bang Yai, Nonthaburi province. The suspects are still at large. I feel sorry for the rider. This rider has no wife or children, only an elderly mother.” In an interview with ThaiRath on Saturday, October 19, Chaiyaporn recounted the brutal assault, which occurred on October 16 at around 9.30pm while he was en route to deliver food near the Central Westgate shopping mall. Chaiyaporn revealed that he was in the right lane of Kanchanaphisek Road when a black Hyundai compact car without a registration plate cut him off. The Hyundai drove very slowly while a white pickup truck behind him honked incessantly. Both vehicles blocked and pressured Chaiyaporn until he crashed into the Hyundai. Chaiyaporn then pulled over to the left side of the road to address the situation. Although the pickup truck was not involved in the crash, the driver also stopped. Blindness risk The Hyundai driver demanded that Chaiyaporn pay 5,000 baht in compensation but he refused and insisted the matter be settled at the police station. Unexpectedly, the pickup driver got out of his vehicle, grabbed Chaiyaporn’s wallet, and stole 1,500 baht in cash. When Chaiyaporn attempted to use his phone to call for help, the Hyundai driver snatched it from him and began beating him. After the attackers fled the scene, Chaiyaporn sought help from other food delivery riders at the nearby Caltex petrol station. Rescuers arrived and provided first aid before taking him to the hospital. Chaiyaporn later told the media that he required five stitches for the wound near his eyebrow, that a bone near his eye was fractured, and that he is now at risk of blindness due to internal damage to his eye. Chaiyaporn is adamant that the two attackers deliberately staged the accident in an attempt to extort money from him. When he refused to comply, they physically assaulted him. Officers from Bang Yai Police Station later visited Chaiyaporn at his home for questioning. They assured him that security camera footage provided substantial evidence, and they were confident that they would arrest the suspects soon. 22. Police are searching for two suspicious women and a man who dumped the corpse of an unidentified woman near a cassava farm in the central province of Uthai Thani yesterday. Officers from Lansak Police Station were alerted to the discovery of the dead body at around 3pm yesterday, October 20. The body was found on the side of the road near the cassava farm in the Lansak district of Uthai Thani province. The deceased was a woman aged between 30 and 40, with red hair. Amarin TV reported that the woman had no personal documents with her. She was strangled to death, evidenced by marks on her neck. Her head was covered with a black shirt, and her legs and arms were tied with red ropes. Her body was concealed under a pink blanket. Residents informed police that they noticed a brand-new white van driving past their homes and entering the road alongside the cassava farm. The suspicious man and woman exited the vehicle and walked into the cassava field. A local man, 65 year old Daeng, told Matichon and the police that he saw the van parked at the location where the body was later found but did not pay any attention to the vehicle. He did not expect such an incident to happen in the community. Daeng also suggested that the deceased was not a resident of the area and was likely murdered elsewhere before being dumped at the scene. The police are reviewing security cameras in an attempt to identify the two suspects. They located the suspicious van, which was parked at a nearby resort. The suspects had just checked out of the hotel this morning, October 21. Police urged any families with missing relatives to contact officers or Park Mueang Hospital in the province to assist in identifying the woman. The body is currently undergoing an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. By Petch Petpailin Photo via Matichon Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-10-21

  24. Police today arrested a mat rental operator who threatened a municipal official with a knife after being warned not to offer the service on Pattaya Beach. The municipal official, 43 year old Chalermphon, filed a complaint with Mueang Pattaya Police Station at around 12.36am today, October 21, after narrowly avoiding the knife attack by the mat rental operator, later identified as Prayote “Yok” Robmanee, on Pattaya Beach. Chalermphon explained to the police that he was patrolling the beach to issue warnings to food vendors and mat or chair rental operators, instructing them not to profit from public beach space. He encountered Yok, who took over a section of the beach and was forcibly charging beachgoers for mats, so he issued a warning to Yok. Yok ran away from the beach, so the official followed him. Unexpectedly, Yok pulled out a knife and attempted to stab Chalermphon, prompting him to step back. Chalermphon managed to record the incident and later handed the video to the police as evidence. In the video, Yok is seen walking away from the municipal official saying… “What do you want from me? You took my 11 mats away last time.” Yok hurled multiple vulgarities at the official as he fled the scene. However, Mueang Pattaya Police Station managed to arrest Yok the same day in Soi Buakhao. Yok claimed he did not intend to attack anyone but said the municipal official threw rocks at him. He explained that he merely wanted to scare the official off. Yok was charged with carrying a weapon in a public place without a valid reason. The penalty is a fine of up to 100 baht, and the weapon will be confiscated in accordance with Section 371 of the Criminal Law. In a related incident, a municipal official is seeking justice after two Thai men attempted to assault him when he warned them not to urinate into the sea in Pattaya. The official revealed that the two men followed him to his office, displaying violent behaviour as though they were about to attack him. The two suspects also refused to pay a fine for urinating into the sea, stating they would only pay if the court issued an official document ordering them to do so.
