Cyber police arrested a popular female influencer with over two million followers for promoting online gambling. The influencer admitted to receiving 2,500 baht per post for sharing gambling links. Police Major General Athip Phongsiwapai, head of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, directed Police Colonel Chitsanupong Waidee, the Superintendent of Division 3, to take the 26 year old woman, identified only as Bee, into custody. She faces charges of jointly advertising, publicising, or inducing others to engage in unauthorised online gambling for monetary stakes. Police discovered that the Facebook page แอ๊ค-สะ-เด็ด, with more than 2.2 million followers, was promoting gambling through attached links. Upon investigation, it was found that the account belonged to Bee, leading to a summons for her to meet with investigators and face the charges, reported KhaoSod. During the investigation, Bee confessed that she had been hired by the owners of online gambling websites to post advertisements in her page’s story section. She disclosed that she received 2,500 baht (US$75) for each post. By Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of amarintv Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-10-24

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has hit the jackpot with its new 20-baht maximum fare policy, hailed as a major triumph in public transport. Launched as part of the Ministry of Transport’s Quick Win programme, Transportation for Public Prosperity, the initiative aims to lighten the commuting costs for everyone. Starting with the MRT Purple Line last week, the policy is set to expand, allowing passengers to travel seamlessly across both the Purple and Red Line suburban systems for a mere 20 baht using a single EMV Contactless card. Since the rollout, daily ridership on the Purple Line has skyrocketed by 17.7%, with over 66,000 passengers now hopping on each day, an impressive jump from pre-policy numbers. Meanwhile, the Blue Line isn’t lagging, boasting an 11.92% increase and serving an average of 420,000 passengers daily. Key transfer hubs like Sukhumvit and Silom have also seen a boost, with passenger numbers climbing by 9.11% and 9.80% respectively. The success of the Purple Line is having a ripple effect, enhancing ridership across the entire Bangkok mass transit network. Particularly noteworthy is the Nonthaburi Civic Center station, which connects to the Pink Line and has experienced a staggering 63.36% rise in passengers. Nearby, Talad Bang Yai Station, situated close to a bustling shopping district, reported a solid 27.22% increase in daily users. Park-and-ride facilities along the Purple Line are reaping rewards too. The Bang Yai intersection parking lot has seen a 29% spike in weekday usage, while Bang Rak Noi Tha It station enjoyed a 23% rise in visitors. This initiative has not only boosted public transport ridership but has also played a vital role in cutting down traffic congestion and air pollution in the city, paving the way for a more sustainable urban environment. In addition to the fare policy, the MRTA is rolling out initiatives like the PAPA Care programme (Priority Accessible Purple Line Area) to support the elderly, disabled, pregnant passengers, and children, ensuring that public transport is accessible for all. In partnership with Krung Thai Bank, the MRTA has introduced an EMV Contactless card that offers fare discounts across all MRT lines while seamlessly integrating with other public transport systems, including the Red Line and BMTA buses. California doctor claims spicy Thai dish left her with chemical burns Photo courtesy of New York Post A California neurologist is suing a Thai restaurant, claiming she suffered permanent injuries after eating a spicy dish that she described as “unfit for human consumption.” Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1341598-california-doctor-claims-spicy-thai-dish-left-her-with-chemical-burns/ -
A California neurologist is suing a Thai restaurant, claiming she suffered permanent injuries after eating a spicy dish that she described as “unfit for human consumption.” Harjasleen Walia, a San Jose-based doctor, is demanding over US$35,000 (approximately 1.16 million baht) in damages after an order of Dragon Balls at Los Gatos’ Coup de Thai allegedly left her with chemical burns. The notorious Dragon Balls—a fiery appetizer made with chicken, herbs, and Thai chili—was at the centre of the drama. Walia claims the dish caused “irreversible” damage to her vocal cords, throat, and nose, leaving her with burns from the intense spice. “She incurred permanent injuries and will forever be damaged,” according to the lawsuit filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court. On a July 2021 visit to the restaurant, Walia requested the dish be made less spicy due to her low tolerance. But she says that upon taking a bite, her “mouth, throat, and nose burned like fire,” leading to immediate coughing and watering eyes. Despite pleading for dairy products like yoghurt to cool the burning sensation, staff allegedly offered no remedy. At the heart of the lawsuit is the bird’s eye chilli, a pepper known to pack a punch with up to 100,000 Scoville Heat Units—about 40 times hotter than a jalapeño. Walia’s legal team claims the restaurant “negligently failed to test the heat intensity” and did not warn about the risks of using such spicy ingredients. Coup de Thai has denied responsibility, with a restaurant supervisor stating that Dragon Balls can’t be made mild as the chilli is already mixed in. The jury trial is set for August 2025, with the restaurant seeking medical records to support Walia’s claims, reported Daily Mail UK. Riverside communities in and around Bangkok are bracing for potential flooding due to high tides and increased water discharge. The Royal Irrigation Department has announced that water released through the Chao Phraya dam in Chainat province has been ramped up to 1,550 cubic metres per second. This urgent measure follows recent heavy rainfall, which necessitates easing pressure on the dam. The increased discharge will cause the water levels in the Pongpeng Canal, Bang Ban Canal, and Noi River to rise by up to 20 centimetres. Combined with high tides, there is a risk of flooding in areas of Bangkok without flood walls and in neighbouring provinces like Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, and Pathum Thani. Adding to the concerns, the Meteorological Department has advised that tropical storm Trami is on course to move across Luzon in the Philippines before potentially impacting Vietnam and Thailand’s north-eastern region this weekend. Residents in vulnerable areas are being urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents to prepare for possible flooding from now until Friday, ensuring safety measures are in place to safeguard people and properties. Bangkok University Faces Probe Over Alleged Subpar Aviation Course A university in Bangkok finds itself embroiled in controversy after allegations emerged concerning its aircraft repair technician course. The course, priced at nearly 1 million baht, is under investigation by Thailand's Higher Education Ministry. Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi has tasked Supachai Pathumnakul, the ministry's permanent secretary, with leading the inquiry. Concerns were raised publicly by Kasetsart University lecturer Weerachai Phutthawong, following multiple complaints from students on October 22. Students allege that the university promised them a degree conditional upon paying the complete enrolment fee, set at 500,000 baht. Yet, they claim this sum doubled due to hidden costs, totalling 1 million baht. Despite these expenses, students frequently faced class cancellations, leading to dissatisfaction and concern over the course's credibility. The course brochure assured graduates of obtaining a European Aviation Safety Agency certificate. Contrary to these promises, graduates reportedly received credentials from a private firm tied to the training—certificates they found to be unrecognised by potential employers. Weerachai conveyed the graduates' frustrations, noting, "No employer would hire holders of such certificates." The unfolding investigation now aims to ascertain the programme's accreditation standards and address the grave issues raised by the students. The House Committee for Transportation closely monitors the ongoing construction of the Andaman International Airport in Phang Nga. Scheduled to open by 2030, this ambitious project hopes to rejuvenate the local economy and accommodate increasing tourism. On a recent site visit, committee chairman Kroomanit Sangpoom expressed satisfaction with the project's advancement, particularly concerning land restitution and infrastructure progress. The development, sprawling over 7,300 rai, will boast two runways and the capacity to handle 43 flights per hour. It aims to manage 22.5 million passengers annually, serving as a crucial extension to the overburdened Phuket Airport. Conservation concerns had initially shifted the project from a forest reserve area to its current site in Takua Thung district. To ensure a harmonious blend of development and community welfare, a special subcommittee will be formed, tasked with assessing investment value and public impact. A 20-million-baht contract was awarded for a preliminary feasibility study, investigating the economic, environmental, and social dimensions, which will guide the subsequent detailed design and environmental assessments. With cross-agency cooperation and strategic relocation, hopes are high for Andaman International Airport to become a key transit hub in southern Thailand. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-23

Race Against Time: Police Pursue Tak Bai Massacre Suspects In a determined bid to bring closure to one of Thailand’s most haunting events, National Police Chief Kitrat Phanphet has issued an urgent directive to apprehend suspects linked to the 2004 Tak Bai massacre. With the statute of limitations set to expire on 25th October, authorities face intense pressure to detain those responsible before they slip through the cracks of the justice system. Eighty lives were lost amidst the tumult of a fateful crackdown in Narathiwat province, and only two days remain to ensure that justice is served. Fourteen former officials, including high-ranking military and police generals, are implicated in the tragic incident, with the Narathiwat Provincial Court having already indicted seven. With legal hurdles looming, Police General Kitrat is leaving no stone unturned. His recent visit to Provincial Police Region 9 underscores the urgent pace of the arrest efforts, whilst coordination with Interpol seeks to thwart any attempts by suspects to evade capture by leaving the country. The case has seen arrest warrants issued, but with some fugitives already beyond Thailand's borders, locating them is a daunting task. Even as Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai explores legal channels to extend the deadline, Police General Kitrat insists the focus remains squarely on capturing suspects within the current timeframe, sidestepping political distractions. Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong stresses impartiality, assuring that the justice system will not distinguish between state officials and civilians embroiled in legal proceedings. Citizens are urged to aid in locating the suspects, providing vital information to ensure justice does not elude its grasp due to time constraints. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-23

A business operator in Koh Chang appealed to the Interior Ministry’s Damrongdharma Centre to assist in the demolition of two large, unlawfully constructed concrete jetties that he claims are worsening coastal erosion. Kitti Yimrewat, the businessman, argues that these jetties, which he describes as comparable to buildings due to their massive size, have detrimental effects on nearby coastal areas. He points out that his efforts to have the structures removed have been further delayed as the resort owning the jetties has been granted an additional 150 days following the expiration of an initial 180-day deadline. Advisors suggested that Kitti petition the Administrative Court regarding the deadline extension, a process that could take approximately a year. Instead, he opted to file his complaint with the Damrongdharma Centre’s Trat office. Koh Chang Grand View Resort has received a 150-day extension to the original 180-day deadline for demolishing the illegal concrete platforms, with the initial period having expired yesterday. Phira Iam-sunthon, Trat Deputy Governor, explained that the resort cited challenges in executing the demolition to justify its request for an additional 180 days. However, the provincial office of the Marine Department granted only 150 more days. The new deadline now extends until February 18, and Phira noted that if the resort fails to meet this second deadline, a civil suit will be initiated to compel the resort to pay compensation for the coastal erosion caused by the concrete structures, reported Bangkok Post. “If the company fails to meet the second deadline, a civil suit will ensue to force it to pay compensation for the coastal erosion these concrete structures are causing.” By Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of Jakkrit Waewkhlaihong -- 2024-10-23

Police apprehended a monk and his accomplice for fraudulently collecting donations under the guise of a religious charity in Rayong, Thailand. The offenders placed donation bins at various shops, falsely claiming to represent a defunct temple. Today, October 23, law enforcement officials responded to reports of fraudulent activity involving donation bins placed in multiple shops along the roads in Rai-Tamnanpa, Rayong. The investigation revealed that the suspects were misusing the name of an abandoned temple to solicit funds. Nopadol Butrong, a shop owner, recounted the incident. He noted a suspicious vehicle, an Isuzu pickup truck with Kamphaeng Phet registration, parked in front of his shop. A monk, accompanied by a male driver, exited the vehicle and requested permission to place a donation bin for the Suan Pa Samun Phrai Monastery in Saraburi. Nopadol recognised the monk from previous visits and noted inconsistencies in the monk’s story. The bin bore the name Phra Athikan Mongkol and a contact number, which turned out to be unreachable. This raised further suspicion, prompting Nopadol to contact local police. Upon receiving the report, officers from the Pe Police Station contacted the headman of the area where the purported monastery was located. It was confirmed that the Suan Pa Samun Phrai Monastery had been abandoned for quite some time, making it impossible for it to be conducting any donation drives. Further investigation led to the identification of the monk as 40 year old Supachai, and the driver as 38 year old Suwanwit. Both individuals were questioned and eventually confessed to using the abandoned temple’s name to collect money for personal use. The police seized 55 donation bins, a box of wooden money sticks, 3,550 baht (US$105) in cash, a ledger documenting the shops where the bins had been placed, and the vehicle used in the operation. Supachai was defrocked at the Petarasukarom Monastery before both suspects were taken into custody. Investigations at various shops in the village revealed that donation bins had been placed in dozens of locations. All bins were confiscated as evidence. The suspects admitted to the charges of defrauding the public and were formally charged, reported KhaoSod. Police urged shop owners who had received similar donation bins to submit them to the Pe Police Station for evidence in the ongoing case. The police also advised the public to report any suspicious solicitation activities to prevent falling victim to such fraudulent schemes. A suspect from a drug gang in Bangkok remains at large after firing five shots at police to facilitate his escape. His accomplice, who was apprehended, was found with 160,000 methamphetamine pills and 1 kilogramme of crystal methamphetamine hidden in the car’s boot. Yesterday, October 22, around 10.30pm, police officers led by Rangsang Sonsingh, along with Sanchai Keerirat and Wutthichai Boonyoo, conducted a drug bust operation in Saimai, Bangkok. They detained 37 year old Wuttisak Tanchareon, who had a significant stash of illegal drugs. The incident took place in Soi Saimai 10, Saimai district. The police patrol initially encountered the suspects’ vehicle in Soi Saimai 57. Spotting the suspicious car with two occupants, officers signalled for it to stop. Instead of complying, the driver accelerated, attempting to flee. During the chase, one of the suspects fired five shots at the pursuing officers from the car window. The chase concluded in Soi Saimai 10, where police managed to intercept the vehicle. One suspect was captured, while the other fled into the nearby alleys. A thorough search of the car revealed approximately 160,000 methamphetamine pills and 1 kilogram of crystal methamphetamine. Police report that the fugitive is of small build, bald, and was wearing a short-sleeved black shirt and shorts. He is armed with a revolver, reported KhaoSod. The police are currently conducting a manhunt, employing drones to survey the area and locate the suspect. Given the armed nature of the fugitive, officers are proceeding with caution to prevent any violent incidents. In related news, police in Phatthalung have arrested a drug dealer at a petrol station, seizing 20,000 methamphetamine pills intended for local distribution and are now expanding their efforts to dismantle a larger network in Thung Song. Phatthalung police, led by Yotsaporn Rungsawat, commander of the 434th Border Patrol Police Company, alongside Amphon Nilbanphot and Chusak Chuthong, officers from the same unit, and administrative officials from the Internal Security Operations Command of Phatthalung, conducted a successful raid.
