A 14-year-old girl, who was injured in a school bus fire incident on Tuesday, is gradually improving and has started physical therapy, according to the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health. The girl's condition is moving towards betterment as there are no signs of fever or infection from the burns on her arms. She is now able to carry out some tasks by herself, even as the rehabilitation team continues to assist her. Although she is able to sleep and appears calm, further mental health assessments for her and her family are to be carried out by the institute. During the horrific fire incident, the girl was amongst those who were able to escape as the coach went up in flames. The unfortunate incident led to the death of 20 school children and three teachers. The students were from a school in Uthai Thani’s Lan Sak district. They were on a day trip to Nonthaburi when the tragedy struck. Funeral services for the victims will be held at the school, under royal sponsorship, and will be overseen by Privy Councillor President Surayud Chulanont, with other high-ranking government officials attending. Chada Thaised, Bhumjaithai's MP for Uthai Thani, disclosed today that due to the high number of fatalities, help from private sector crematoriums had been sought. The planned funeral site is currently partially flooded, but necessary adjustments will be made, he mentioned. Family members of the diseased put toys, like footballs and dolls, on the coffins in memory of their deceased loved ones. A few were seen shedding tears. Today, former Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai visited the funeral site to pay his respects to the departed. He encouraged everyone to learn from this tragic accident, which took many young lives, and work towards how such incidents could be avoided in the future. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-04

Thai beauty queen tricked into paying 800,000 baht for victory Photo via Matichon A Thai beauty queen demanded justice after a beauty pageant manager deceived her into paying 800,000 baht to secure a crown. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1339853-thai-beauty-queen-tricked-into-paying-800000-baht-for-victory/ -
A Thai beauty queen demanded justice after a beauty pageant manager deceived her into paying 800,000 baht to secure a crown. The 27 year old beauty queen, Panicha, also known as Lemon, sought help from non-profit organisation Saimai Survive after she was allegedly duped by the manager of a renowned beauty pageant in the central province of Suphan Buri. Lemon explained that she won numerous beauty pageants in various provinces across Thailand and planned to take a break from her beauty queen journey. However, the manager of this particular contest contacted her on July 13 last year and persuaded her to postpone her break. According to Lemon, the manager urged her to join the pageant, even guaranteeing her the winner’s title if she agreed to pay 200,000 baht. Lemon admitted that she agreed to join the contest and paid the bribe in instalments over three months. Lemon said she was confident in her ability to win without bribery but agreed to pay to ensure her victory. She did not think carefully about the legality of her actions and simply wanted to seize the opportunity for herself. The beauty pageant took place in March of this year. During the contest, the manager pressured her to pay more to support the contest and find sponsors for the pageant. The manager also borrowed money from her, claiming it would support the event. In total, Lemon paid 800,000 baht to support both the pageant and the manager. However, despite her contributions, she only reached the top five but did not win the pageant as promised. Lemon revealed that she immediately questioned why she had not won, and the manager responded that her body shape and abilities had not been sufficient for the winning position. Lemon believes that she is not the first victim of this manager and has stepped forward to seek justice for herself and other victims. The beauty queen emphasised that she respects the winner of the contest and has no personal issues with her. Saimai Survive has taken up her case and plans to follow up on the matter with the police station where Lemon filed her complaint. Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong authorised the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to expedite the high-profile fraud case against celebrity online retailer Kornkanok “Mae Tuck” Suwannabut. The case has been designated a special case to ensure a swift resolution. Kornkanok and her husband, Kanpon Rueang-aram, were arrested on September 30 in Bangkok, facing multiple charges. They are accused of public fraud, inputting false information into computer systems, misleading advertising, and misrepresenting product and service details. Kanpon has been detained at Bangkok Remand Prison while Kornkanok has been placed in the Central Women’s Correctional Institution. The Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) denied circulating reports that it had summoned social media influencers or celebrities linked to Kornkanok for questioning. Rumours had suggested that Jenuch Bangtoei, a famous online vendor and Kornkanok’s aide, had been called in for interrogation. The CPPD clarified that it is currently focusing on processing victim complaints and preparing summons documents. Police have confiscated five luxury vehicles and other assets belonging to Kornkanok and Kanpon. Summonses are expected to be issued next week to individuals who appeared in live broadcasts endorsing and selling Kornkanok’s products via her social media channel. Fraud case The charges against the couple primarily relate to the online sale of substandard gold jewellery. Some influencers and celebrities have already provided statements to police, denying any involvement in the fraud, according to the CPPD. The Consumer Protection Board has set a deadline of tomorrow for Kornkanok’s company to explain its business practices. Allegations have surfaced that the gold shop was not licensed for online direct sales, prompting a CPPD investigation into this claim. Yesterday, October 3, police searched the couple’s home in the Ram Intra area of Bangkok and two of their companies located on Hathairat Road in Klong Sam Wa district, said Police Major General Witthaya Sriprasertpab, the CPPD commander. Police seized at least five luxury vehicles, including a McLaren sports car estimated to be worth 30 million baht (US$911,730), along with bank accounts and other assets. The total value of the seized assets is approximately 70 million baht (US$2 million). A large safe deposit box, previously shown in a video by Kornkanok to be filled with millions of baht in cash, was found empty. The couple claimed they used the cash to refund customers who had returned gold items. Meanwhile, the Anti-Money Laundering Office announced it had received evidence of fraud submitted by police. Officials will meet on October 17 to decide whether the couple’s assets should be frozen before proceeding with restitution to victims, reported Bangkok Post. Police also searched the couple’s K2N gold shop in Klong Sam Wa district of Bangkok yesterday. By Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of Wassayos Ngamkham Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-10-04

A dramatic international manhunt has ended with the arrest of a South Korean man accused of trafficking crystal methamphetamine from Thailand to South Korea. Thai narcotics police, working closely with their South Korean counterparts, swooped in on 44 year old Seo Jung Num in Chon Buri province. Police Lieutenant General Panurat Lakboon, Secretary-General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), revealed that the operation began in December last year when South Korean police intercepted a package of crystal meth concealed in coffee and bean bags. The drugs, sent from Thailand, raised alarm bells after the recipient in South Korea was arrested. During interrogation, the suspect pointed the finger at Seo, leading to an arrest warrant and a manhunt that stretched across borders. “After tracking the suspect’s movements, it was clear he had fled to Thailand.” Thai narcotics officers, together with immigration officials, located Seo hiding out in a hotel in Chon Buri province, a tourist hotspot. He was not only wanted for drug trafficking but was also found to have overstayed his visa, compounding his legal troubles. Seo is expected to be deported to South Korea, where he will face the full brunt of drug trafficking charges, reported TNA. Bangkok’s city streets are set for a major revamp, with City Governor Chadchart Sittipunt leading efforts to address enduring urban issues. On October 2, during a visit to Sukhumvit Soi 23 in Watthana district, Governor Chadchart, alongside Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon, shed light on these challenges, highlighting the urgent need for action. A primary concern is the poor road condition, as water pipe installations and subsequent inadequate repairs have left many surfaces in disrepair, a recurring issue throughout Bangkok. Furthermore, outdated green light poles contribute to pedestrian hazards due to frequent malfunctions caused by electrical faults. Governor Chadchart has announced plans to update these poles by refurbishing them and securing the wiring underground, aiming to reduce theft and functionality issues. Roadside paving also drew criticism from the Governor, who demanded improvements. However, the most pressing concern remains the traffic bottlenecks at Sukhumvit Soi 23’s entrance, where the road narrows from four lanes to three, creating a choke point. Pedestrian pathways are similarly affected, often blocked by random poles and trees. Chadchart proposes a solution to widen the road to maintain four lanes and intends to enforce stricter measures against illegal parking. These steps aim not only to alleviate traffic congestion but also to enhance safety and accessibility for both drivers and pedestrians in Bangkok's bustling heart. Thailand is doubling down on efforts to re-establish itself as a premier global tourism hotspot. In a significant announcement made yesterday at the Dusit Thani Bangkok, the Tourism and Sports Ministry and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) rolled out their strategy to attract more visitors. Addressing representatives from TAT’s 74 offices, Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong shared ambitious targets: a hoped-for influx of 10 million additional foreign visitors by year-end, contributing to a potential total of 36.7 million tourists for 2023. The country is seeing a promising trend; foreign arrivals increased by 30% compared to last year, totalling 26.08 million from January to September. Top visitors hailed from China, followed by Malaysia, India, South Korea, and Russia. An uptick in both domestic and international flights during the peak tourism season is anticipated to support this surge. Currently, Suvarnabhumi Airport accommodates 200,000 passengers daily, and expectations are set for full recovery of flight capacities by the next year. Despite the encouraging numbers, challenges loom. Minister Sorawong recognised potential setbacks from global issues like the Middle East conflict and a strengthening baht, along with local concerns such as flooding. Yet, the optimism is palpable. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool conveyed confidence in overcoming obstacles, noting a 200% increase in group tour bookings from China as a positive indicator of recovery. With ambitious goals and momentum on their side, Thailand is determined to reclaim its status on the world tourism stage. The coming months will test the resilience and appeal of the "Land of Smiles." File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-04

Thailand's Finance Department has announced updated benefits for the welfare card program starting in October. Individuals who qualify can now get several types of allowances and benefits such as subsidies for transport, shopping allowances, and more substantial disability payments. These additions were announced on Tuesday, October 1 by Teeraporn Phasuk, the Deputy Director-General of the Finance Department and official spokesperson. The benefits will be available for those who enrolled in the 2022 Welfare Card scheme and carry smart ID cards. Beneficiaries will get a 300 baht monthly allowance to buy items, starting from October 1. This applies to those who verified their identity between August 27 and September 26. Unfortunately, they won't get any backdated benefits. Every quarter, recipients can also get an 80 baht discount on cooking gas purchases from October until December. Plus, they will receive a 750 baht monthly transportation subsidy for public transport services such as buses and trains. Keep in mind, these allowances are non-transferable and can't be carried over to the next month. Starting October 18, people with disabilities eligible for the disability allowance will get an extra 200 baht each month. That's in addition to the current 800 baht month disability allowance. However, to qualify for this, they need to have confirmed their identity during the same period mentioned earlier. Once again, there won't be any retroactive benefits. These allotted funds will be transferred to bank accounts connected to the eligible person's ID number, or the bank accounts of those who receive the 800 baht disability allowance. For inquiries, people can call the Welfare Card Customer Service Center at 0 2109 2345 or the Finance Department Call Center at 0-2270-6400 during office hours. These timely updates ensure qualified individuals receive financial help to manage their everyday expenses. The welfare card program continues to be a vital source of financial aid for those needing it, helping to improve their standard of living and economic stability. Thailand Battles Monsoon Chaos: Floods Disrupt Travel and Aviation File photo for reference only Thailand is currently contending with intense monsoon rains, leading to extensive flooding which has significantly impacted aviation operations. Thailand is currently contending with intense monsoon rains, leading to extensive flooding which has significantly impacted aviation operations. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is implementing rapid response strategies to address these challenges, ensuring safe travel amidst the turbulence. The umbrella organisation, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd. (AEROTHAI), is spearheading these efforts. According to Deputy Transport Minister Monporn Charoensri, AEROTHAI is following the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) guidelines to enhance air traffic safety and efficiency during these trying times. Floods have caused many travellers to rethink their plans, with AEROTHAI introducing alternative air traffic plans like rerouting flights and deploying holding patterns. These steps are critical to maintaining safety and flexibility in air operations. In addition, all flights have been advised to carry extra fuel to counter delays caused by adverse weather conditions. Airlines and passengers are being kept in the loop via consistent communication about potential changes in flight schedules, with strong encouragement to stay updated through announcements from Thailand’s Meteorological Department. AEROTHAI's CEO, Napasin Jakpitak, underscored the necessity for vigilance and readiness, ensuring all units are on high alert to provide timely assistance in flood-prone zones. Officials have also been active on the ground, distributing relief packages to flood-stricken communities while ensuring the aviation sector remains adaptable and ahead of the looming weather threats. Travellers are urged to exercise patience and allow additional time for journeys, as delays and cancellations become increasingly frequent under the unpredictable weather conditions seen throughout the monsoon season. Insurance companies, in collaboration with the Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC), are set to provide compensation to the families of the deceased and injured following the school bus blaze tragedy. Each person affected is entitled to an initial compensation of 660,000 baht (US$19,940). The devastating incident, which occurred on October 1, claimed the lives of 23 students and teachers from Wat Khao Praya Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani. They were on an educational trip to Nonthaburi. Additionally, five individuals sustained injuries. In a statement, the OIC confirmed it has examined the insurance details related to the incident and is ensuring fair compensation for the families affected. The OIC’s investigation revealed that the bus had compulsory motor insurance with Viriyah Insurance. The policy, which began on April 30 and ends on June 30, 2025, covers death or permanent disability at 500,000 baht (US$15,105) per person. For injuries, the maximum medical expenses are capped at 80,000 baht (US$2,420) per person. For loss of organs, the compensation ranges from 200,000 to 500,000 baht (US$6,040 to 15,105) per person. Permanent disability is compensated at 300,000 baht (US$9,060) per person, while inpatient treatment at a hospital attracts daily compensation of 200 baht (US$6) for up to 20 days. The bus also had voluntary motor insurance, type 3, with Mittare Insurance Plc. This one-year policy, which started on June 30, provides coverage for third-party damage to life, body, or health up to 500,000 baht (US$15,105) per person, with a maximum of 10 million baht (US$302,040) per incident. Property liability is covered up to 600,000 baht (US$18,120) per incident. Bus fire Legal heirs of the deceased will receive compensation from the compulsory motor insurance, averaging no more than 10 million baht (US$302,040) per incident. The voluntary motor insurance, type 3, also offers an average payment of no more than 10 million baht (US$302,040). Additionally, Wat Khao Praya Sangkharam School had group accident insurance with Viriyah Insurance. This one-year policy, which started on May 15, covers death at 80,000 baht (US$2,420) per person and medical expenses at 8,000 baht (US$240) per person per incident, said the OIC. “Most of the deceased were from Uthai Thani, so the OIC office in Pathum Thani coordinated with the Uthai Thani office to facilitate insurance compensation. The office coordinated with the insurance company.” For those injured and hospitalised, the OIC has contacted the insurance company to provide initial compensation for medical expenses under the compulsory motor insurance act, amounting to 30,000 baht (US$905) per person. The OIC added that the commission is also liaising with the Thai Life Assurance Association and the Thai General Insurance Association to determine if the victims or deceased had any additional insurance coverage, reported Bangkok Post. “If the passengers have other insurance, they will receive all rights according to the insurance contracts.” By Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-10-04

Corruption scandal hits the brakes: Thailand’s bus industry whistleblows dirty dealings Photo by Chaowanon J via flickr A shocking revelation has swept through the coach bus industry of Thailand as several anonymous companies have blown the whistle on rampant corruption within the Land Transport Department‘s vehicle inspection process. A sneaky bribe of 3,000 to 4,000 baht is all it takes to fast-track an inspection, making life suspiciously easy for some. A shocking revelation has swept through the coach bus industry of Thailand as several anonymous companies have blown the whistle on rampant corruption within the Land Transport Department‘s vehicle inspection process. A sneaky bribe of 3,000 to 4,000 baht is all it takes to fast-track an inspection, making life suspiciously easy for some. This disgraceful practice was put under the spotlight following the recent bus blaze tragedy that claimed the lives of 23 children and teachers. The vehicle involved was discovered to have illegally installed gas tanks. Out of 10 NGV gas tanks on the coach, only six were there legitimately. This scandal has raised alarming questions about the integrity of public transport vehicle inspections across the country. Furthermore, some of the gas tanks were installed inside the bus, increasing the risk to both the driver and passengers in the event of a gas leak. In addition, police investigations into other buses from the same company revealed that every vehicle had more gas tanks installed than the approved number. Channel 3 conducted interviews with multiple coach bus companies regarding the vehicle inspection process. Some stated that the inspection was carried out thoroughly as part of vehicle registration renewal and tax payment, which is required every six months. The inspection period usually runs from January to June each year. These companies confirmed that bus operators couldn’t pay bribes to authorities to expedite the registration renewal process. However, according to media reports, some bus companies admitted to paying officials 3,000 to 4,000 baht or more for a quicker inspection. They explained that long queues formed between January and June, as officials were only able to inspect 10 vehicles per day and were unavailable on weekends and public holidays. Pay extra The bus companies also stated that the queues were even longer in areas like Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Ayutthaya, and Chon Buri, where many buses are registered. While waiting in the inspection queue, buses would not have valid registration plates and were unable to operate, causing companies to lose significant income during this period. As a result, some companies chose to pay extra to the relevant officials to speed up their inspection process. Paying 3,000 to 4,000 baht would hasten the process slightly while paying more would be considered as VIP treatment. VIP companies could have their inspections conducted immediately after payment. Some bus companies felt they had no choice but to pay to continue providing services to passengers. As of now, no relevant officials have come forward to verify the information shared in the media. A Thai woman is seeking justice after a hit-and-run on a zebra crossing in the central province of Pathum Thani on October 1 left her with two broken legs. The victim, 50 year old Rattana, took to social media to search for the pickup driver who crashed into her at around 5am on October 1. Rattana shared CCTV footage of the incident with the public and urged anyone with useful information to contact her. In the video, Rattana is seen standing in the middle of a zebra crossing, waiting to cross to the other side. She stood on the road where many vehicles passed by at high speed, as there was no traffic island. Suddenly, a black pickup truck hit her, causing her to collapse to the ground. The driver did not stop to check on her and did not even slow down. Channel 7 reported that a motorcycle taxi rider, Sutirat, spotted Rattana lying in the middle of the road and called a rescue team to the scene. Sutirat said he and other taxi riders tried to identify the pickup’s registration number but failed. Sutirat added that another victim, a 90 year old, was previously hit by a car at the same spot, as most motorists drive at very high speeds on this road. Rattana was admitted to Pathumvech Hospital. Both her legs were broken, and her left arm was swollen. She shared that she would be unable to walk for many months and could not go to work, resulting in a loss of income. She has two sons to care for and wants the pickup driver to take responsibility for his actions. According to Rattana, she filed a complaint with officers at Khlong Luang Police Station and hopes the police will bring the pickup driver to justice as soon as possible.
