  2. A viral Facebook post showing an object being thrown from the infamous Waterfront condo in Pattaya has led to a flurry of activity at the site. The clip, posted on September 30th, captured a long, white object being hurled from the roughly 20th floor of the 53-storey abandoned building near Bali Hai Pier. Reporters from The Pattaya News responded swiftly, arriving to find workers removing iron and aluminium bars from the structure. Workers were acting under the directive of their boss to clean up, as theft had riddled the site over the years. Mr. Pandawat Pimskul, a 72-year-old lawyer representing Bali Hai Co., Ltd., explained that the once-luxury condo has been marred by legal disputes since its halt in 2008. Despite various court-ordered demolition mandates, lawsuits have stalled any progress, leaving the building an eyesore and a magnet for thieves and squatters. Mr. Pandawat emphasised the urgency of the cleanup, stressing the potential dangers posed by the upcoming rainy season. The lawyer reassured that efforts are underway to minimise risks to the surrounding community, reported The Pattaya News. Photo: The Pattaya News -- 2024-10-01

  4. The opposition People’s Party eagerly awaits Parliament's decision on its "progressive liquor bill" today. This bill, a key election promise by the reformist Future Forward Party in 2019, aims to liberalise Thailand’s alcohol market. Future Forward, having evolved into the Move Forward Party, was blocked from forming the government in 2023 and eventually dissolved. Its members have now regrouped under the People’s Party banner. The bill is up against two other proposals from the ruling Pheu Thai Party and its coalition partner, the United Thai Nation Party. Parliament’s decision to read each bill individually, rather than together, has heightened concerns that government MPs will oppose the People’s Party’s initiative. Taopiphop Limjittrakorn of the People’s Party, who previously faced legal trouble for operating a craft beer business without a licence, champions the bill. His proposal includes controversial provisions allowing individuals to brew liquor or beer for personal use without permitting. “The certification is for supervisory purposes,” counters Pheu Thai deputy spokesman Chanin Rungtanakiat, who cites public health concerns. Recent poisoning incidents from homemade brews underscore the risks involved. While recent legal changes have somewhat liberalised brewing, the People’s Party argues that these only superficially ease the restrictions, maintaining barriers for small-scale producers. With Thailand's alcohol market predominantly controlled by seven corporations, the bill advocates for breaking this oligopoly and supporting grassroots economies. Today's parliamentary vote will determine whether the People’s Party bill clears this significant hurdle, shaping the future of Thailand's alcohol industry. 6. Tragedy Strikes Uthai Thani: School Trip Ends in Fatal Coach Fire In a heart-wrenching incident today, 22 schoolchildren and three teachers from Wat Khao Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani were killed when their coach caught fire on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road. Sixteen children and three other teachers managed to escape, though some sustained injuries, according to Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The tragic incident unfolded while the students, aged between three and nine, were on a one-day educational trip. They had visited the Ayutthaya Historical Park and were en route to the Electricity Generating Authority learning centre in Nonthaburi. The schoolchildren and their teachers were expected back by 8pm. Minister Anutin, along with Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, rushed to the scene to oversee emergency operations and offer support to the survivors. Initial reports suggest the fire started after a tyre burst, causing the coach to scrape against the metal crash barrier, which ignited sparks that set aflame the gas tank. Anutin confirmed there were 38 students and six teachers on the ill-fated coach. The rescue efforts saw sixteen students and three teachers brought to safety and quickly transported to the hospital for treatment. Transport Minister Suriya announced an immediate review of the safety of CNG fuel, which was used in the burned coach, to determine its future suitability for vehicles. Meanwhile, the school has issued a statement on Facebook, urging parents to reach out for updates concerning their children. The nation mourns alongside the families as they grapple with this devastating loss. Photo: Thai PBS World -- 2024-10-01

  8. Mae Sai residents are bracing for more flooding as heavy rain is predicted to hit the region. Just a month after devastating floods, officials have issued another alert, urging the evacuation of riverside homes due to expected overflows from the Sai River. The Tambon Mae Sai municipal office issued the warning yesterday, stating that heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted through Thursday. This could potentially raise the water levels in the Sai River, posing a significant flood risk to adjacent communities. Authorities are advising residents in these flood-prone areas to relocate temporarily. Suggested safe havens include homes of relatives, communal shelters, or local temples. The urgency stems from the fact that many riverside houses are still unoccupied, bearing the brunt of damage from the last flood and remaining filled with mud. As the community prepares for the worst, efforts are underway to ensure everyone's safety, highlighting the resilience and solidarity of the Mae Sai residents in the face of recurring natural adversities. 10. In a controversial decision on Monday, a Thai court ordered the extradition of Y Quynh Bdap, a 32-year-old Vietnamese activist, to Vietnam. Despite concerns from rights groups about his safety, the Bangkok Criminal Court granted Vietnam's request for Bdap’s extradition. Bdap, the co-founder of Montagnards Stand for Justice, was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison by a Vietnamese court in January. He was convicted of terrorism on charges related to organising anti-government riots in Vietnam’s Dak Lak province last June, during which nine people were killed. However, Bdap’s attorney, Nadthasiri Bergman, has announced plans to appeal the decision within the next 30 days. She highlighted the Thai government’s ability to diplomatically refuse the extradition, citing potential human rights violations. Bdap has been seeking asylum in Canada and met with Canadian Embassy officials a day before his arrest in Bangkok. Canada's officials have yet to comment on the case. Human Rights Watch has urged Thai authorities to release Bdap, emphasising the risks he faces if returned to Vietnam. They criticised Thailand’s history of returning dissidents to uncertain fates, a practice allegedly done in exchange for similar actions from neighbouring countries. This decision reignites the debate over Thailand's international obligations regarding the protection of asylum seekers. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-01

  14. A group of employees narrowly escaped a life-threatening incident when their ATV overturned in a fast-flowing stream, leading to a rescue operation with no help from staff. The event has raised questions about the safety and licensing of adventure activity providers. On Tuesday, September 24, at a vehicle rental company in Sai Noi, Nonthaburi, Athiwat Sirikarnwanwong, the founder of the Dare to Step Forward page, met with Premnara Boonrod, the 37 year old company’s director. This meeting followed a complaint regarding an adventure activity provider in Tha Chai, Mueang district, Nakhon Nayok. The complaint questioned whether the provider had the necessary licenses after two company employees were involved in an ATV accident in a fast-flowing stream. Despite the severity of the incident, the ATV staff did not assist, leaving the two women to fend for themselves, resulting in near drowning and injuries. Subsequently, the business owner offered 10,000 baht (US$300) in compensation to avoid further scrutiny and potential closure by officials. The incident occurred at noon on September 22. Premnara, along with her boyfriend 34 year old Wiwat Kaewsripo, took company employees 56 year old Somsak Uephunpol, 30 year old Thitiporn Kaenpromma, and 48 year old Pijitra Morya, to participate in activities in Nakhon Nayok. The activities included go-karting with three karts, two ATVs, and rafting, costing 3,450 baht (US$100) booked through a local tourism admin. Upon arrival, they found the activity site was an outdoor tent with four staff members who did not guide the activities or equipment usage. They had to follow the staff without knowing the route, leading to the ATV accident in the stream. ATV accident A mobile video captured by Premnara showed Somsak helping Pijitra onto the bank and then attempting to assist Thitiporn, who was clinging to a tree branch. An ATV staff member in a blue shirt later helped push Thitiporn onto the bank. Another video showed the group driving back to the ATV tent after the incident. Premnara explained that she intended to give her employees a break, so she searched for rafting activities online and chose three activities for the trip. Upon arrival on September 22, there was no explanation about the activities, and the staff simply instructed them to follow without providing the route details. The team had three ATVs followed by three staff ATVs. When they reached the stream, they were puzzled about driving through it but followed the staff anyway. As the employee’s ATV tilted right, Premnara stopped her vehicle. She saw the employee’s ATV drifting with the current and shouted for help but no staff responded. Eventually, Somsak had to rescue the employee stuck underwater with the ATV. The whole incident concluded without any staff assistance, who claimed they couldn’t swim. Thitiporn, the ATV driver, said she had no prior experience. She followed the staff into the stream, thinking they had found a safe spot. Her ATV’s right wheel tilted, and as she called for help, the vehicle started floating. The strong current swept her away, and she clung to a tree until Somsak rescued her. Somsak recounted being the last driver and seeing the accident unfold. He asked the staff for help but they remained silent. Realising the danger, he decided to help Pijitra first, who was trapped underwater as the ATV spun. Inexperienced staff He managed to pull her to safety before helping Thitiporn, who was clinging to a tree branch. Somsak urged them to stay calm until they reached the bank. Pijitra expressed her fear during the incident, believing she would die as the ATV pinned her leg. She criticised the ATV staff for their lack of experience and readiness, stating she would never participate again without ensuring proper safety measures and licenses, reported KhaoSod. Athiwat, upon reviewing the video, deemed the situation extremely dangerous. He emphasised the need for detailed safety instructions and customer care. He and the victims plan to visit Nakhon Nayok to urge responsible authorities to investigate the provider’s licenses, stressing that human lives cannot be compensated with money. 16. A former local government official, visibly drunk, caused a scene at a Sing Buri restaurant in central Thailand by assaulting a four year old boy, leading to a brawl with the child’s father. The incident occurred around 10.20pm yesterday, September 25, at a restaurant in Sing Buri City. The restaurant had two occupied tables: one with a family of four, including two children aged three and four, and the other with a short-haired woman, identified as a 63 year old former local official, accompanied by two other women. The former official, who was drinking alcohol, began arguing with one of her companions, identified as a local administrative organisation president and her friend. The argument escalated when the former official shouted at the family, asking, “Why are you looking at me?” The situation intensified when the husband, a 25 year old man who wishes to remain anonymous, approached the former official to inquire if she had said anything to his wife. Despite attempts by restaurant staff to defuse the situation, the former official retorted aggressively, leading to a confrontation. The husband returned to his table, but the former official continued causing trouble. She asked for her car keys, intending to follow the family home. Approaching the family’s table, she picked up a bottle, threatening the man who managed to push her away. The commotion spilt onto the street, where bystanders intervened. During the chaos, the couple’s four year old son ran out to see what was happening. The former official grabbed the boy by the head and threw him to the ground, causing him to hit his head hard on the surface. Enraged, the boy’s father rushed to defend his son, repeatedly punching the former official while shouting, “Why did you hurt my son?” Police action The family filed a police report at Sing Buri Police Station. The boy’s mother described the incident. “My husband and I are ordinary people who work general jobs. We never expected such trouble. We frequent this restaurant with our two sons. When I heard the argument, I turned to look, and the short-haired woman in black shouted at me, asking why I was looking. I apologised, explaining it was unintentional. Someone in the restaurant pleaded with the former official to calm down but she ignored them. “A woman in yellow came to our table to apologise, saying her friend was drunk. I accepted the apology, and we tried to move on. However, the former official came to our table and tried to hit my husband with a bottle. “My eldest son ran to see the fight but was violently thrown to the ground by the former official. My husband retaliated in anger, asking why she hurt our child. We went to the police and later took our son to the hospital. “He complained of a headache and couldn’t sleep. The hospital advised us to monitor him at home and return if his condition worsened. He vomited three times the next morning, so we went back for further tests, but no serious injuries were found. However, he is still frightened and keeps mentioning the mean person who hurt him.” Police Colonel Patikorn Harnhatthakit of Sing Buri Police Station commented on the incident. “The incident was reported to us yesterday by the mother of the injured child. The events were captured on CCTV, confirming the altercation. “We’ve sent the child for a medical examination to determine the extent of his injuries. Our investigators are reviewing the footage and gathering witness statements to proceed with legal actions against the former official.” Attempts to contact the restaurant and the involved parties for further comments were unsuccessful, reported KhaoSod. 18. Two Thai women shared their experience of being insulted by a Chinese national who called them prostitutes on TikTok. A well-known American teacher and many netizens condemned the incident. One of the victims, Pinyada Nantakhamee, posted a video on her TikTok account, @made_moji, on Monday, September 23, in which she tearfully recounted the unpleasant experience during her trip to China. In the video, Pinyada was heard saying… “I’m crying, everyone. I can’t believe this happened. I didn’t expect my trip to China would result in this. At first, I didn’t know what the Chinese national was saying, but a guide told me. The person said, ‘Thailand is the land of prostitution.’ It’s such a hurtful insult.” Pinyada also revealed that the Chinese person loudly called her and her friend prostitutes, and other Chinese people around them found it amusing, laughing at them. Many of her followers expressed support and encouragement, while others strongly criticised the behaviour of the Chinese national. Some even suggested that Pinyada should have responded with Thai insults and laughed louder, claiming that Chinese nationals back down when confronted more aggressively. “Does China not have prostitutes?” “I live in China, and there are sex workers everywhere.” “Save your money for domestic travel. Don’t go to countries where you’ll be insulted.” “Don’t cry, you’re not what they said.” In the comment section, Pinyada mentioned that she took a photo of the Chinese person who insulted her and her friend. Many netizens urged her to share the image publicly but as of now, she has not done so. A well-known American teacher David William, also created a video offering his support to Pinyada and her friend. He condemned the Chinese person. “People who insult and stereotype others are ignorant.” In his video, William shared a personal experience in Italy where a local made sweeping generalisations about Asian countries, saying he had no interest in visiting Asia because all the people, culture, and food are the same. William said this led to a heated argument and he urged the person to stop stereotyping. He advised Thai nationals facing similar situations to stand up for themselves rather than staying silent. 20. Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport is gearing up for a major boost, with a brand-new runway set to open on November 1. The shiny new runway is expected to revolutionise the airport’s flight capacity, helping it soar to new heights. Kirati Kijmanawat, the Director of Airports of Thailand (AOT), confirmed the exciting news, stating that the third runway is now complete. “We’ve conducted successful tests on landings and take-offs.” Kirati added that the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and Aeronautical Radio of Thailand have given the green light. Located to the west of the airport, this impressive runway is 60 metres wide and stretches 4,000 metres long, running parallel to the first runway. Once the final field lighting is installed and systems are fine-tuned, the airport will be able to handle up to 94 flights per hour—up from the current 68 flights. However, it won’t be an immediate leap to full capacity. The airport plans to gradually increase operations, hitting 75 flights per hour next year, 85 flights in 2026, and a target of 94 flights in 2027. This increase in flights is set to significantly boost the airport’s revenue, with projections climbing to a whopping 9.09 billion baht by 2027. But that’s not all—Suvarnabhumi has even bigger plans on the horizon. The AOT is preparing to design a fourth runway on the eastern side of the airport, with construction expected to begin in 2027. Meanwhile, bids for a massive new South Terminal, expected to handle 70 million passengers annually, are set to be launched alongside the runway project, reported The Nation. 24. The third and final suspect in the shocking murder case involving a South Korean national, whose body was encased in a cement-filled barrel and discarded in a Pattaya reservoir, has been apprehended in Vietnam. Eui Jong Roh, 34, was abducted and gruesomely murdered by fellow South Koreans in Bangkok last May. Following a failed ransom attempt for 3 million baht from Roh’s mother, the criminals resorted to extreme measures. They brutally murdered Roh, sealed his body in a 200-litre barrel filled with cement, and abandoned it in a Pattaya reservoir, hoping to cover their tracks. Thai authorities swiftly issued arrest warrants for the three principal suspects. Two were apprehended in May. Lee Roun was caught upon his return to South Korea, and Lee Young Jin was detained after his escape to Cambodia. The hunt for the third suspect, Kim Hyeonggwon, ended on 23rd September, when Vietnamese police arrested him in the Dong Da district of Hanoi. Hyeonggwon had fled from Thailand to Laos and then crossed into Vietnam illegally. His movements within Vietnam had been somewhat erratic, staying in various small hotels in Da Nang and Hanoi to elude capture. With the arrest of Kim Hyeonggwon, the gruesome murder case draws closer to a legal resolution. Vietnamese authorities are now coordinating with South Korean officials to extradite him, ensuring he faces justice alongside his co-conspirators, reported The Pattaya News.
