  1. File photo for reference only In light of escalating US-China trade tensions, the Thai baht may appreciate past the psychological barrier of 33 to the US dollar in the second quarter. This remark was made by the Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research) after the currency reached a six-month high. On Thursday morning, the baht traded at 33.18-33.20 against the greenback, a slight retreat from an overnight rate of 33.08. Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of research, banking and finance at the Kasikornbank think tank, highlighted the currency's recent strength alongside other Asian currencies due to the dollar's depreciation amid a weakening US economic prospect. This followed President Donald Trump's imposition of reciprocal tariffs. Additionally, the baht has been buoyed by surging gold prices, which hit a record high of $3,357.78 per ounce on Thursday. The dollar index, which measures the US dollar's value against a basket of foreign currencies, has declined 8% this year, while the baht gained 2.4% from 34.10 to the dollar at the end of 2024. The capital flight from the dollar to currencies like the yen and Swiss franc, which have risen 10.2% and 11.1% respectively year-to-date, further supports the baht's appreciation. "Should US-China tensions persist or worsen, the baht could break past the key level of 33 to the dollar this quarter,". As of April 16, the Stock Exchange of Thailand saw foreign capital outflows worth 46.9 billion baht year-to-date, compared to 148 billion for all of 2024. However, the Thai bond market attracted 38.2 billion baht in foreign capital during the same period. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's recent remarks indicated that Trump's tariffs could prompt US inflation spikes, though the Fed plans to await more economic data before adjusting interest rates. Nonetheless, market speculation is growing that if inflation rises due to tariffs, the Fed might cut rates in its upcoming May meeting, sooner than a previously expected June cut. The shifting economic landscape exemplifies the complex balance between global trade tensions and currency markets, as Thailand watches its baht potentially strengthen further in response to external pressures, reported Bangkok Post. -- 2025-04-18

  3. Tourists celebrating Songkran in Koh Larn this year were welcomed not just with water splashes but also by an innovative safety operation featuring high-tech patrols and immersive security measures. Spearheaded by Police General Saksira Phuakam, Commander of the Tourist Police, the initiative aimed to ensure a safe and memorable festival for all visitors. The operation kicked off at the Multi-Purpose Hall on Laem Bali Hai Pier in South Pattaya, where a coordinated effort was launched involving the Tourist Police Division 4, Pattaya Police, Chon Buri Immigration, Pattaya City Municipality, and the Marine Department. Their unified mission was to manage the influx of thousands heading to the island, ensuring smooth ferry operations and visitor safety. Festivities were bolstered with practical gifts; tourists received water-resistant envelopes, thoughtfully distributed to protect their phones and valuables amid Songkran's traditional water fights. "The aim is to make sure everyone enjoys the festival safely and conveniently," assured Pol. Gen. Saksira. In an effort to connect technology with tourist support, authorities promoted the TPB mobile application, a resource providing 24/7 support in eight languages, designed as a direct line to the Tourist Police for emergencies. This tech-savvy approach highlighted Pattaya's commitment to a safe, hassle-free experience for visitors. Recognising community support, Pol. Gen. Saksira awarded certificates to individuals who contributed valuable information to the police, enhancing the security framework during the celebrations. Stealing the spotlight was the introduction of an "intelligent aerial patrol system," which employs autonomous drones to monitor large crowds. This real-time surveillance tool demonstrated Pattaya's push towards tech-enabled public safety, showcasing how advanced aerial views can assist in efficient crowd management. As the festival unfolded, this comprehensive operation highlighted Pattaya's innovative spirit, reinforcing that Songkran 2025 is about embracing both tradition and technology to ensure a safe, enjoyable celebration for everyone, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-18

  5. File photo for reference only A swimming coach in Nonthaburi near Bangkok has denied accusations of sexually assaulting a 26-year-old female trainee during a session at a condominium pool, launching a countersuit for alleged defamation. The case unfolds as both parties present conflicting narratives surrounding the interactions during training. The trainee, whose identity remains protected, filed a complaint with Bang Sri Mueang Police, alleging inappropriate contact by the coach. She asserts that during a training session, the coach touched her waist excessively and stood too closely, claiming he attempted proximity with his genitals. Feeling uncomfortable, she ceased the session and fled, later sharing video evidence with law enforcement and news outlets. In footage aired by Channel 7, the coach is seen positioned behind the woman as she practised freestyle swimming. While supporting her claims, the woman also alerted a Facebook group administrator for swimming coaches, resulting in the coach's removal from the group. Defending his actions in a Channel 7 interview, the coach maintained that his conduct aligned with standard teaching practices. He noted that physical contact is a norm for instructional purposes in swimming, and emphasised that the video shared publicly was not complete. He further argued that his proximity was intended for verifying correct breathing techniques. In response, the coach has filed a countersuit, alleging defamation and unlawful dissemination of information under Thailand's Computer Crime Act, contesting the allegations which he claims damage his reputation. As legal proceedings unfold, the police have yet to reach a conclusion or levy charges against either party. Both individuals are expected to provide further statements to clarify the incident. Reflecting on the situation, former national swimmer and current coach Arwut “X” Chinnapasaen advised potential trainees to thoroughly vet swimming coaches by checking their credentials and permits, underscoring the importance of trust and professionalism in coaching relationships, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-18
  6. Thai Cattle Farmers Protest Proposed Import of US Hormone-Treated Beef Picture courtesy of Beefmaster Breeders United Thai beef farmers are raising alarms over government plans to permit imports of US beef, potentially treated with growth hormones, as part of a trade deal seen as risking both local livelihoods and food safety. 7. Picture courtesy of Beefmaster Breeders United Thai beef farmers are raising alarms over government plans to permit imports of US beef, potentially treated with growth hormones, as part of a trade deal seen as risking both local livelihoods and food safety. The Beef Cattle Association of Thailand, with support from over 60 allied groups, has conveyed its strong opposition by storming into the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. Concerns over health, safety, and economic impacts drive this resistance. Sitthiporn Boorananath, the association's vice president, voiced fears that US beef, flagged for containing potentially carcinogenic growth hormones, threatens Thailand's stringent safety standards. Hormone treatment in cattle is prohibited in Thailand, which leaves the local industry uneasy about the quality of incoming meat. Economic repercussions are a significant concern. An influx of cheaper US beef could undermine about 1.4 million farming households raising over 9.6 million cattle, valued at 288 billion baht. Farmers already struggle under free trade agreements with countries like Australia and New Zealand, enduring price pressures from imported meats. Sitthiporn criticised the government's lack of consideration for small-scale farmers, contrasting the administration’s previous focus on pork producers. As part of their strategy to counter the trade deficit, the government aims to use this policy as leverage for reducing US import taxes on Thai goods – a move met with staunch resistance from farmers like Sewiang Saengkhaw from Phatthalung, worried about rural economic impacts. Internationally, farmers express concern over Thailand's reputation. Countries known for strict anti-hormone policies, such as Malaysia, Vietnam, and China, might rethink their imports of Thai beef if the market sees an influx of US products, potentially damaging trade relationships and diminishing the appeal of Thai beef globally. The association plans to elevate the protest by petitioning finance and commerce ministers, seeking to reverse the decision proposed by the government. As the debate unfolds, the plea from Thai cattle farmers remains clear: reconsider the import proposal to safeguard local farming communities and maintain the country's esteemed food safety standards, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-18

  9. Photo via Channel 8 A deeply troubling incident in Ratchaburi province has shocked the community, with a 19-year-old woman caught on video strangling her 10-month-old daughter using an electric wire. The incident, which occurred on April 6, followed a heated argument with her boyfriend over household chores. The distressing video, partially shared by Esor News, shows the child crying while the mother utters, “You put pressure on me. You force me to do this.” Although the video shows the wire eventually being removed, the aftermath and intent linger painfully. The case caught the attention of the non-profit Be One, which swiftly initiated an investigation to secure the baby’s safety. According to Channel 3, the boyfriend, who recorded the video, is not the child's biological father. Their relationship began through an online game when the woman was already pregnant. The boyfriend, aged 22 and with a child from a previous marriage, claimed that such abusive incidents occurred frequently after disagreements. In his account, frustration arose from blaming over chores, prompting the abusive outburst. Following the incident and a subsequent breakup, the boyfriend posted the video using the woman’s Facebook account, reportedly to highlight her behaviour. Contacted by Be One founder Chalida Palamart, the mother admitted feeling remorse and recounted that threats of eviction and harm towards the child by the boyfriend precipitated her actions. She insisted her harmful act was not out of lack of love but extreme duress. Currently, the child is under the care of the woman’s father, as authorities determine the next steps. The woman has expressed intent to file a complaint against her ex-boyfriend for unlawfully sharing the video, citing the Computer Crime Act. No formal charges have been filed yet, but police, alongside the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, are assessing the situation. The Department of Mental Health is also involved to evaluate and support the woman’s mental health. This case underscores the urgent need for interventions supporting families in distress, as the legal and social systems work to address the multifaceted challenges unveiled by this tragic event, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-18

  11. Photo via Facebook/ ทราย - Merman Ψ In a surprising turn of events, Siranudh “Sai” Scott, a renowned 29-year-old half-Thai, half-Scottish park ranger, popularly known as Sai Merman, has stepped down following a dispute with a foreign tourist and amidst local criticism in southern Thailand. This departure marks a significant chapter in Sai’s commitment to marine conservation while also highlighting tensions between conservation efforts and local interests. Sai, who previously made headlines for swimming 30 kilometres to highlight marine conservation, found himself at the centre of controversy after an altercation with an Italian tourist. The tourist was reportedly snorkelling in a restricted area, prompting an argument that escalated when Sai accused the man of making a racist remark. The incident unfolded when the tourist allegedly greeted Sai with “Ni Hao,” a Mandarin phrase for “hello,” which Sai interpreted as a racial slur, given that he is Thai, not Chinese. The disagreement was captured in a video shared by Sai, where he confronted the tourist and threatened deportation over the perceived insult. Sai explained his view that the greeting was not a simple mistake, but an intentional affront accompanied by laughter. This confrontation has divided public opinion. Supporters commend Sai for standing against perceived racism, while critics argue his response was overly harsh, contending that the use of “Ni Hao” is often meant innocuously. Meanwhile, local business operators voiced their frustration with Sai, whom they accused of obstructive actions against traditional fishing practices, urging him to focus on larger environmental polluters instead. Despite stepping down from his official role with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), Sai has reaffirmed his dedication to wildlife advocacy. In a heartfelt message to his followers, he expressed his willingness to sacrifice his prestigious position, motivated by his deep love for the sea and a desire to address ongoing issues transparently. He assured continued support for government conservation efforts while pursuing independent advocacy. While the exact reasons behind Sai’s resignation remain somewhat ambiguous, the culmination of accusations from local communities, combined with the controversial encounter, appear influential. As the dust settles, Sai's resignation underscores the ongoing conflict between conservation advocacy and local economic interests, a division he hopes to bridge in the future, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-18

  13. Photo via Facebook/ แอ้ม - เลิศศักดิ์ ปนกลิ่น In a determined effort to restore tourist confidence, officials in Phang Nga are swiftly implementing safety measures following a devastating road accident that critically injured two German tourists and hospitalised their toddler. The crash, which took place on the late afternoon of April 15th in the Khao Lak area, involved a speeding pickup truck colliding with the family on a zebra crossing near Phetkasem Road. The victims, 34-year-old Phillip David Lothar and 32-year-old Linda Raub, were crossing the road with their 23-month-old son, Fiete, when the vehicle struck them. The accident left the couple with serious injuries, necessitating their immediate transfer to intensive care at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Remarkably, their son escaped with only minor injuries. The driver involved, a 60-year-old man known as Choei, remained on site after the collision and was promptly arrested on charges of reckless driving causing injury. This shocking incident served as a wake-up call for local authorities, triggering an emergency meeting chaired by Phang Nga Governor, Pairot Petchyuan. At the meeting, there was a concerted call for urgent and visible action to mitigate the damage to Phang Nga’s tourism image. Attendees included key representatives from the police, disaster response units, transport office, and local government, all focusing on a rapid and effective response strategy. Key safety measures introduced include repainting zebra crossings in high-risk zones with vibrant red-and-white colours to increase visibility. Furthermore, speed bumps and clearer speed limit signage are being installed, alongside the repair of faulty traffic lights in pedestrian-heavy areas. There is strict enforcement targeting speeding vehicles, particularly among locals, taxi drivers, and public transport operators. In a show of support, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office has been tasked with visiting the affected tourists, offering aid and delivering a gift basket to the hospital, although the family was too unwell to receive visitors. Khao Lak police have intensified speed checks on Phetkasem Road, quickly catching seven speeding motorists in a single afternoon operation. Additionally, the province’s tourism office has mobilised TAC Centre medics to improve emergency response times and is deploying volunteers at key tourist crossings to enhance pedestrian protection. Determined to demonstrate a firm stance on tourist safety, Governor Pairot pledged decisive legal action, stating, “We will pursue legal action decisively to demonstrate our commitment to tourist safety.” As Thailand’s tourism reputation faces scrutiny, Phang Nga officials are keen to prove their dedication to ensuring that such tragedies are not repeated, aiming to safeguard visitors and rejuvenate trust in the region’s safety, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-18

  16. Photo: Vietnam News Police in the central province of Thanh Hóa have dismantled a significant counterfeit pharmaceutical operation, targeting vulnerable elderly consumers with low-cost musculoskeletal medicines. The ring, which spanned multiple provinces including Hà Nội, HCM City, Vĩnh Phúc, Hưng Yên, An Giang, and Đồng Tháp, was responsible for producing and distributing fake pharmaceuticals intended for treating musculoskeletal diseases. Law enforcement conducted urgent searches across six locations used for the manufacturing and storage of these counterfeit medicines. In their operation, authorities seized a staggering 21 types of counterfeit products, over 18,000 empty packaging boxes, 142kg of various pills and powders, and nearly ten tonnes of counterfeit medicines and raw materials. They also confiscated machinery and equipment used in the illicit production process. Fourteen individuals, including the ringleaders, have been arrested. Nguyễn Tiến Đạt, aged 32, from Hà Nội and Trịnh Doãn Giáo, aged 38, from HCM City, orchestrated the scheme. They invested in production lines and researched pharmaceutical compositions, sourcing raw materials of dubious origin and hiring workers to produce counterfeit drugs by grinding and mixing these materials into powders. These fake drugs, presented as capsules and blister-packs, were distributed through various channels. Authorities estimate that between 2021 and the time of arrest, the operation profited nearly VNĐ200 billion (about US$8 million) from selling these counterfeit medicines. Initial investigations reveal the ring exploited a common issue in Vietnam where many self-medicate without official prescriptions, and a general lack of consumer knowledge about verifying medicine origins. By targeting elderly consumers seeking affordable treatment options for conditions like joint pain and degenerative ailments, the ring was able to perpetuate the sale of fake medications. Rather than replicate existing well-known pharmaceutical brands, they fabricated product names and companies, often fictitiously claiming overseas origins to lend a false sense of legitimacy. The investigation continues as authorities work to unravel the full extent of the operation and ensure those affected receive justice. This case highlights the pervasive issue of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, emphasizing the need for increased consumer awareness and tightened regulatory oversight, reported Vietnam News. -- 2025-04-17
  17. File photo for reference only In a tragic incident at Bình Dương's KSB Industrial Park, three workers lost their lives in a serious workplace accident. The event unfolded on Thursday at Minh An Vina Co., Ltd., located in Đất Cuốc Commune. Local police, alongside the Bình Dương Provincial Police's criminal division, are diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. The accident occurred during a renovation project at the facility. According to initial reports, the workers arrived at the site around 7am, and a metal support structure collapsed during dismantling, tragically striking the victims. Trịnh Văn Quốc, aged 36 from Sóc Trăng Province, and Trần Quốc Thanh, 33 from Bình Dương Province, were killed instantly. Trần Văn Lợi, 45 from Kiên Giang Province, succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital. Preliminary investigations suggest that the renovation was undertaken without the necessary permits, prompting a comprehensive probe into regulatory compliance and overall site safety practices. In the wake of this tragedy, local authorities have extended condolences and financial assistance to the bereaved families. The Bình Dương Industrial Zones Authority's Trade Union provided VNĐ10 million (approximately US$385) to each family. Additional support was offered by KSB Industrial Park's head investor, the Bắc Tân Uyên District Labour Union, and the Đất Cuốc Commune People’s Committee, with each contributing VNĐ10 million and VNĐ5 million respectively. This incident underscores the critical need for stringent safety protocols and regulatory adherence in workplace environments to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The ongoing investigation aims to bring clarity to the incident, ensuring accountability and reinforcing safety standards, reported Vietnam News. -- 2025-04-17
  18. File photo for reference only The battlefields and historical sites of the Vietnam War, once the backdrop to intense conflict, have transformed into places of pilgrimage and tourism, offering both Americans and Vietnamese a chance to connect with a tumultuous past. Key locations like Hamburger Hill, the Ia Drang Valley, and Khe Sanh are no longer just names in history books or films; they are destinations where visitors can reflect on the sacrifice and resilience displayed over half a century ago. U.S. Army veteran Paul Hazelton recently revisited Vietnam near his 80th birthday, walking through sites that hold personal significance. This included the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City—formerly Saigon—where he served as a young draftee. Hazelton observed the stark transformation of Vietnam from a war zone to a bustling country that thrives on international trade and tourism. Vietnam's war with the United States, lasting from 1955 to 1975, saw more than 58,000 American and far greater numbers of Vietnamese casualties. The conflict followed the expulsion of French colonial forces and the partitioning of Vietnam into the communist North and U.S.-aligned South. This year, the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, coincides with 30 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Tourism is pivotal to Vietnam's economy, rebounding vigorously post-pandemic. In 2024, Vietnam hosted over 17.5 million foreign visitors, nearing pre-Covid records. The War Remnants Museum draws about 500,000 visitors annually, two-thirds of whom are foreign. It highlights the war's impact, including the notorious My Lai massacre and the destructive legacy of Agent Orange. While the U.S. planned to contribute its own exhibition detailing damage remediation efforts, these plans are on hold due to foreign aid cuts by the Trump administration. Significant sites in Saigon include the Cu Chi tunnels, which illustrate Vietnamese guerrilla tactics with its expansive network used to elude American forces. Visitors have a chance to experience the ingenuity of the guerrillas by navigating the tunnels and visiting a firing range featuring war-era weapons. The former Demilitarized Zone in Quang Tri Province, a site of intense conflict, attracted over 3 million visitors in 2024. Nearby, the Vinh Moc tunnels reflect the resilience of Vietnamese civilians amidst relentless bombings. Other locations of historic conflict, like the Citadel in Hue and Khe Sanh, offer visitors insight into the intense battles that took place. In Hanoi, the Hoa Lo Prison—known sardonicly to prisoners as the "Hanoi Hilton"—offers a somber look at the air war from the Vietnamese perspective. American POWs, including the late Sen. John McCain, were held here, sharing untold stories of endurance and memory. With these sites offering an "alternative perspective on the war," as one visitor from New York noted, Vietnam continues to draw those who seek to learn, reflect, and understand a war that shaped the destinies of millions, reported VN Express. -- 2025-04-17
  19. File photo for reference only In response to a troubling rise in road accidents involving buses and jeepneys, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) of the Philippines is contemplating re-establishing driving academies specifically for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers. This initiative comes after a bus company's operations were suspended following an accident on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and an ongoing investigation into a fatal jeepney crash on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City. LTFRB spokesperson Ariel Inton highlighted growing concerns over 'kamote' or reckless drivers, noting that the issue has even drawn the attention of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. On a recent broadcast of Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon, Inton mentioned the possibility of reviving the proposal to institute dedicated driving academies for PUV drivers. The suggested driving academy would offer rigorous training to ensure that drivers fully understand their personal responsibility and accountability. Inton emphasized that the proposed training should be preventive, conducted before accidents occur, rather than reactive. Efforts to improve road safety are not new; earlier this year in March, the LTFRB mandated additional road safety courses for PUV drivers. However, implementation was paused due to concerns raised by the transport sector. Additionally, Inton underscored the need for transport operators to be accountable for their drivers, countering the common excuse of driver resignation after accidents. He acknowledged that while road accidents might not be entirely eradicated, the aim is to significantly reduce their frequency. As the LTFRB considers consultations with public transport stakeholders, the proposal for driving academies represents a proactive step towards enhancing driver training and improving road safety across the country, reported PhilStar. -- 2025-04-17
  20. File photo for reference only China's Ambassador to the Philippines, Huang Xilian, has reassured that the rights of three Filipinos, arrested for alleged espionage, are being upheld as their cases proceed through the judicial process. Despite confirming that China will pursue the charges, Ambassador Huang emphasized the commitment to protecting the legal rights of the accused. The Philippine Consulate General in Guangzhou is actively coordinating with Chinese authorities to ensure the Filipinos' rights are safeguarded, in line with the Philippines-China Consular Agreement. This agreement, under Article 13, allows consular officers to visit detained nationals, communicate with them, and organize legal assistance. The three individuals, natives of Palawan, were detained in Hainan following their arrest on espionage charges against China. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed its expectation for due process and full protection of their rights. DFA's Office of Migration Affairs has arranged local legal representation, funded by the DFA Legal Assistance Fund. “We already funded the lawyer,” indicated DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Affairs Eduardo de Vega. However, the approval of the provincial governor in Hainan is required for the lawyer to meet with the detainees, and efforts are underway to secure this authorization. The families of the detained have appealed for visitation rights through the Philippine consular office, though Ambassador Huang did not provide clarity on whether such visits would be permitted by the Chinese government. Concerns have been raised by the National Security Council (NSC) over the espionage charges and the individuals' alleged confessions. Notably, the detainees were recipients of the Hainan Government Scholarship program. Malacañang has committed to fully assisting the three Filipinos, while refraining from commenting on speculations that their arrest might be retaliatory, linked to the Philippines’ prior arrest of Chinese nationals for similar charges. The situation remains delicate, with diplomatic and legal avenues being pursued to navigate the complexities of international legal proceedings, reported Manila Bulletin. -- 2025-04-17

Guzman, inspections have been conducted across key bus terminals in Sampaloc to evaluate and fortify security preparations. The inspection team visited several major transport hubs, including A and B Liner on Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard, Fariñas Bus Line along Lacson Avenue, Partas Bus Terminal on Laong Laan Street, and Viron Transit on Blumentritt Street. These evaluations focused not only on the security apparatus but also on the welfare of officers, ensuring they are equipped and ready to handle the uptick in travelers and respond promptly to any incidents. Col. Brillante F. Billaoac, Station Commander of Sampaloc Police Station, affirmed the MPD’s commitment to safeguarding travelers. "Our priority is to protect the safety and well-being of every traveler. Team PS4 is ready to fulfill its mandate to maintain peace and order and extend assistance to the commuting public," he stated. With a notable increase in police visibility at terminal areas, the MPD aims to deter criminal activity and provide immediate support when necessary. They encourage public cooperation and vigilance, urging everyone to stay aware of their surroundings, report any suspicious activities, and adhere to security protocols for a peaceful and safe Holy Week experience. As the city gears up for this solemn period, the Manila Police District’s enhanced safety measures seek to provide a secure environment, reassuring travelers and facilitating a smooth observance of Holy Week traditions, reported Manila Bulletin. -- 2025-04-17
