Pictures courtesy of KhaoSod In a heartwarming twist of fate, Kamplaeng Singkulang, a 53-year-old resident from Buriram province, is celebrating a 6 million baht jackpot win, thanks to a moment of compassion towards a persistent lottery vendor. Kamplaeng's life-changing win emerged from the April 16 lottery draw, after purchasing a ticket purely out of sympathy. While visiting her husband at a warehouse in Mueang Buriram district, she was approached by a lottery vendor. Despite her initial reluctance, citing a lack of lucky omens or dreams, Kamplaeng agreed to let the vendor, who seemed desperately in need, choose the ticket for her. “She kept insisting and looked like she hadn’t sold anything,” Kamplaeng recounted. Her decision to help the vendor turned into an unexpected bonanza when her ticket turned out to be the top prize winner. Faced with this unexpected windfall, Kamplaeng plans to use the funds for meaningful and practical purposes. She intends to complete the construction of her family’s home, clear outstanding debts, and save for her children’s and grandchildren’s education and daily needs. “I want to use this money wisely,” she stated. “It’s a blessing that came when I least expected it.” Her story has quickly gained local attention, resonating with many who see it as a testament to the good fortune that can follow acts of kindness. Kamplaeng’s experience is a touching reminder that sometimes, good things come to those who give selflessly, proving that compassion and generosity can shape our lives in the most unexpected ways, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-17

Phi Phi Islands Reopen for Diving: A Dive into Conservation and Recovery Pictures courtesy of Naewna Tourists are now welcome to explore the stunning waters of the Phi Phi Islands once again, but with a purpose—protecting this tropical paradise. Pictures courtesy of Naewna Tourists are now welcome to explore the stunning waters of the Phi Phi Islands once again, but with a purpose—protecting this tropical paradise. After a one-year closure due to severe coral bleaching, snorkelling and scuba diving have resumed at ten designated sites within the renowned Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi. Sangseelee Chongthong, head of the national park, announced this uplifting development, citing significant signs of coral reef recovery. "The coral is healing well, and surveys indicate the marine ecosystem is rebounding. We’ve decided to lift the restrictions imposed last year and reopen the approved diving and snorkelling zones," he said. The initial ban, instated through official orders on May 13 and June 22, 2024, aimed to give the delicate coral ecosystems a chance to regenerate. Encouraged by the visible recovery, authorities have now revoked these bans, welcoming tourists back to several popular sites. Reopened areas include the northern and eastern sides of Koh Kai, northern Koh Poda near Matang Ming, Ao Pu Ya of Koh Poda, Koh Daeng, Ao Railay, Koh Yawasum, Ao Loh Ba Gao, the northern side of Viking Cave, and the waters in front of Ao Pileh. Nevertheless, the western side of Koh Kai (Ao Khang Khao) remains closed to better protect the more fragile coral beds there. Park officials have issued a strong appeal to visitors, tour operators, and boat captains to adhere strictly to marine conservation rules. Key regulations include prohibitions on littering, disposing of food waste in the sea, anchoring on coral reefs, and touching marine life and corals. "We’re counting on everyone to respect the rules," Sangseelee cautioned. "Coral takes years to recover, but only seconds to destroy." The reopening represents a significant boost for the local tourism industry, which heavily relies on Phi Phi Islands’ global reputation as a divers’ paradise. However, it underscores a collective responsibility. Officials stress that while this renewed access offers a chance to enjoy the islands' beauty, it is essential to act with ecological sensitivity. With responsible behaviour and environmental awareness, tourists can enjoy the breathtaking underwater landscapes of Phi Phi, ensuring this natural wonder continues to thrive for future generations, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-17

Investigation Intensifies: Building Collapse Unveils Forgery and Shady Contractors Picture of the State Audit Office courtesy of KhaoSod English The devastating collapse of the State Audit Office building in Chatuchak, Bangkok, has triggered an intensive investigation that uncovers deeper layers of deception, including forgery and phantom contractors. As authorities delve into the rubble, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) expands its scrutiny to include all companies involved in the building’s design, construction, and oversight, following startling allegations of a forged engineer's signature and business nominees masking as legitimate contractors. Picture of the State Audit Office courtesy of KhaoSod English The devastating collapse of the State Audit Office building in Chatuchak, Bangkok, has triggered an intensive investigation that uncovers deeper layers of deception, including forgery and phantom contractors. As authorities delve into the rubble, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) expands its scrutiny to include all companies involved in the building’s design, construction, and oversight, following startling allegations of a forged engineer's signature and business nominees masking as legitimate contractors. Justice Minister Police Colonel Tawee Sodsong and DSI chief Police Major Yutthana Praedam visited the tragic site on 16th April, overseeing the ongoing investigation. Among the two primary case threads, one spotlights the alleged use of fake business names to secure contracts, while the other revolves around the forgery of a veteran engineer’s signature, which purportedly authorised pivotal changes to the building’s design. The engineer at the centre, Somkiat Chusangsuk, whose name shows as the "project supervisor" for PKW Joint Venture, insists on his innocence, stating he left the role over two decades ago. He has launched legal proceedings and submitted substantial evidence to both the DSI and police, aiming to disassociate his identity from the project’s paperwork. Investigators are currently dissecting four significant contracts related to the building’s construction, drawing upon forensic expertise to differentiate between the forged and genuine signatures. Results from these analyses are anticipated within two weeks, potentially unraveling a web of deceit. Simultaneously, the nominee case demands resolution before further probing into the suspect contract bidding processes, ensuring each fraudulent element is meticulously dismantled. Engineering expert and emeritus professor Worasak Kanok-Nukulchai, from the Asian Institute of Technology, categorised this disaster as a "pancake collapse," where floors collapsed sequentially in a matter of seconds, leaving a trail of destruction that resulted in 44 confirmed deaths and 50 individuals still missing amidst the chaos. The investigation continues, with mounting pressure on the implicated firms as hopes for survivors dwindle and families await closure. The pursuit of justice remains a priority, as does ensuring accountability and lessons learned for future architectural and engineering endeavours, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-17

Photo via Facebook/ เจ๊ม้อย v+ A deeply disturbing incident emerged this Songkran Festival in Bangkok, as a woman gave birth on the roadside, only to abandon her newborn before returning to the festivities with friends. The incident, occurring on April 14 near Rotsarin Village in Bangkok’s Don Mueang district, was reported by the Facebook news page เจ๊ม้อย v+ (Jmoi v+), highlighting the dire circumstances surrounding this tragedy. The mother, identified as 27-year-old Piyathida, was initially seen participating in water celebrations near where the infant was discovered. Despite visible blood and inquiries from onlookers, she denied being the mother, attributing her bleeding to menstruation. However, her condition worsened, and she ultimately confessed, leading to her hospitalisation at Prachathipat Hospital due to severe blood loss. CCTV footage from the scene revealed Piyathida delivering the baby near a parked car, tearing the placenta and leaving nonchalantly. Although the infant was alive upon discovery, efforts by rescue workers to revive the child through CPR tragically failed. Phuwadon Aoonpho, Superintendent of Don Mueang Police Station, informed Channel 7 of Piyathida's admission to being the child's mother but claimed she could not recall the father’s identity. Notably, Piyathida, under the influence of alcohol during police questioning, has two other children from prior marriages, both in the care of her ex-husbands' families. The police superintendent confirmed that Piyathida will face legal repercussions for her actions, pending further questioning post-recovery. The harrowing incident has sparked public outcry and intensified scrutiny into her motives and circumstances. Adding to the controversy, Piyathida’s friend, identified as 20-year-old Am, publicly denounced her actions and terminated their friendship. Am, who once shared a residence with Piyathida, expressed disbelief over the cruel behaviour, noting their interactions had dwindled until the festival invitation. Despite suspecting a pregnancy, Am accepted Piyathida's explanation of weight gain. Am further disclosed that Piyathida is estranged from her family, with her mother living abroad and providing financial support. The abandonment, coupled with previous behavioural issues, has left Piyathida isolated from familial ties and support networks. This deeply unsettling event highlights the urgent need for societal and familial support systems to address issues of mental health, substance abuse, and socio-economic distress. As the investigation continues, it stands as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals on the fringes of societal norms, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-17

Pictures courtesy of Pattaya Mail What should be a joyful Songkran festival in Pattaya has taken a hazardous turn, prompting urgent warnings from city officials. As traditional water fights enliven the streets, authorities are raising alarms about the use of high-pressure water guns, which have surged into areas like Soi 6, Soi Buakhao, and Jomtien. These enhanced water blasters, far from being mere party toys, pose significant risk. An anonymous local highlighted the danger, stating, “The force of these high-pressure water guns is so strong it could easily unseat someone from a bike.” Reports suggest these powerful devices are being sold openly and in secret, exacerbating safety concerns in an already lively holiday atmosphere. Law enforcement is taking a hard stance against the use and sale of these water guns, with Pattaya police confirming their zero-tolerance policy. "These high-pressure water guns are dangerous," a police spokesperson affirmed. "We are actively confiscating them from anyone we find using or selling them." The risk is particularly pronounced around bustling Songkran hotspots, where throngs of pedestrians and motorbikes mix. Officials worry that the force of water from these guns could cause severe accidents, especially if riders are dislodged from their bikes or pedestrians lose footing on slick surfaces. Community voices echo the officials' concerns, urging revelers to exercise caution and maintain the essence of the festival as a celebration of Thai culture and tradition, rather than a chaotic free-for-all. The public is reminded that safety should not be overlooked in the festivities. Law enforcement is clear: those caught in possession of these high-pressure water guns during Songkran face firm consequences. With Wan Lai celebrations still on the horizon, Pattaya officials emphasize the need for responsible celebration, urging everyone to stick to the rules or watch their water weaponry get confiscated. As Songkran proceeds, the hope remains that the festival's spirit of joy and community prevails, with fun safely shared by all, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-17

File photo for reference only In a bid to address infrastructure shortcomings and meet the growing demands of Phuket's booming tourism and property markets, local operators have submitted a white paper to the Phuket governor. This proposal focuses on the Cherngtalay area, an increasingly popular region on the island, underscoring the urgent need for enhancements to public facilities and transport systems. Crafted by C9 Hotelworks, a hospitality consultancy, the white paper was developed in partnership with key stakeholders. It provides a comprehensive assessment of the current state of Cherngtalay, highlighting demographics, traffic congestion zones, and ongoing real estate developments, including a robust pipeline of hotels, residences, and commercial projects. As of 2024, Cherngtalay hosts 3,863 hotel rooms with an additional 1,194 expected by 2028. Residential growth is even more pronounced, with 18,138 new units across 104 projects slated for completion by 2035, complementing the existing 14,000 registered residences. Current commercial ventures, like Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket, alongside future projects such as Boat Avenue Lakefront, promise to attract major retailers, adding to the area's allure. Bill Barnett, managing director of C9 Hotelworks, emphasized the strain these developments place on infrastructure, noting the critical need for improvements. The report advocates for adopting a floor area ratio system to support higher density development and optimize land use. It also calls for the expansion of the Phuket Light Rail Transit System, including the introduction of bus feeder lines to improve connectivity and reduce reliance on private vehicles. To tackle traffic woes, the proposal suggests relocating power and telecom cables underground and expanding road lanes. Additionally, developing flyovers and bypass roads at key intersections, such as near the police station and Boat Avenue, would alleviate congestion. The paper also highlights the importance of sustainable urban growth, urging the expansion of green spaces and the addition of pedestrian and cycle lanes. These measures are designed to support not only the current demands but also foster a more sustainable tourism model for the future. By addressing these infrastructure challenges, Phuket aims to maintain its appeal as a premier travel destination while ensuring a high quality of life for residents and sustainable economic growth, reported Bangkok Post. -- 2025-04-17

File photo for reference only The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) is fast-tracking the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link, a pivotal project positioned to transform Thailand into a major logistics hub within ASEAN. This initiative aligns with the Thai government's strategy to enhance connectivity and streamline regional trade routes. DRT director-general Pichet Kunadhamraks recently led a Thai delegation to Chongqing, China—a key city in China’s Belt and Road Initiative—to deepen their knowledge of advanced logistics systems. Chongqing's strategic role in international transport provides valuable insights for the delegation, which met with representatives from the New Land-Sea Corridor Operation (NLS). This organization, part of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative, plays a vital role in managing trade routes and transport logistics. During the visit, the delegation examined the Chongqing New Land-Sea Corridor, a multimodal network combining rail, sea, and road links that unites western China with Southeast Asia. This corridor significantly reduces both the time and cost associated with transporting goods, making it a model for international logistics. The itinerary also included visits to Tuanjiecun Railway Station and a container yard, central nodes for the China-Europe Railway routes. The Thai officials observed sophisticated cross-border cargo systems and cutting-edge logistics technologies at these sites. Their tour concluded with an in-depth look at the Chongqing Inland International Logistics Hub Exhibition Center, where they gathered insights to enhance Thailand's rail infrastructure. Mr. Pichet highlighted the transformative impact of the Laos-China railway, launched in 2021, on freight transport efficiencies between Thailand and China. The railway has notably attracted goods traditionally transported by other means, such as fruit and plastics. Freight volume data underscores this shift: transport between Thailand and the Lao PDR surged from 2,288 tonnes in 2021 to 46,287 tonnes in 2023, soaring further to 63,676 tonnes in 2024—a 37.56% increase from the previous year. The expedited rail shipments now allow goods to reach Chongqing from Thailand in just four days, compared to over two weeks by sea. This efficiency is especially beneficial for perishable and high-value goods. The China-Europe rail network, particularly the Chengdu-Chongqing section, connected 110 cities across Asia and Europe in 2023 and carried over 430,000 TEUs of cargo. As Thailand continues to improve its rail systems with insights from global logistics hubs, the nation is poised to strengthen its role as a key logistics leader in the region, powering economic growth and fostering greater connectivity across ASEAN, reported Bangkok Post. -- 2025-04-17

Pictures courtesy of The Phuket News A violent street brawl erupted in Patong, Phuket, leaving a bar worker bloodied and bruised in an incident fuelled by jealousy. The altercation occurred in the early hours of 14th April near the bustling entrance to Bangla Road, a hub for nightlife on the island. The victim, a 26-year-old woman identified as B, had just concluded her shift when the chaos unfolded. According to B's account to local police, her boyfriend came to collect her but was approached by a woman from a nearby table, accompanied by a group of Thai men. The woman invited him to join them, which he declined, leading the situation to escalate quickly. B recounted, "A woman invited my boyfriend, and when he refused, they became aggressive. I attempted to calm the situation, but was struck in the eye, causing me to fall." The situation deteriorated into a brutal assault, with B and her boyfriend repeatedly kicked and punched. The violence only ceased when the bar's manager and the owner's son intervened. Disturbing CCTV footage captured the incident at 3.49am, showing B’s boyfriend being restrained while others hit him, and B suffering blows, collapsing to the ground. Police arrived promptly, yet B described witnessing the group seated in a nearby bronze-silver pickup truck, close to the police station, without arrests being made at the time. "One woman even mocked me for crying," B recalled, expressing her frustration at the perceived indifference. Following the incident, B filed an official complaint at Patong Police Station and received medical treatment for her facial injuries at a local hospital. The assault gained significant attention after the Facebook page สุดแจ๊คปลัดบอก spotlighted the incident, sharing images of B's injuries and demanding urgent legal recourse. The page alleged the assailants had connections to a prominent local business. As of now, police have yet to confirm suspect identities or whether any charges have been pressed. The ongoing investigation seeks to unravel the attack's circumstances and hold those responsible accountable. Meanwhile, the public remains attentive, eager for justice as the social media spotlight heightens pressure on law enforcement, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-17

Photo via Facebook/ เฮียขับรถ In Pathum Thani, central Thailand, a severe road rage incident involving a local political figure's son has captivated public attention and sparked outrage. On 16th April, dashcam footage spread across social media showed a white BMW sedan forcing a black pickup truck into a violent crash on a motorway. The footage was shared by the Facebook page Here on Board, illuminating an altercation that has left one man severely injured. The video reveals a distressing sequence: a brand new BMW aggressively weaving through traffic, targeting the pickup truck driven by an elderly man. The confrontation originally erupted at a toll gate when the BMW driver, reportedly the son of an influential local politician and a candidate in the upcoming local government elections, attempted to cut in line. The pickup driver, refusing to concede, spurred the ire of the BMW driver. Witnesses reported that despite the pickup driver’s subsequent apology for the toll gate disagreement, the BMW driver disregarded this gesture of reconciliation. The footage distinctly shows the BMW persistently tailing the pickup, ultimately side-swiping it and causing the pickup to lose control and slam into a traffic barrier, inflicting serious injuries upon its driver. The elderly pickup driver sustained broken ribs and is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). His wife, who was also in the vehicle, suffered minor injuries. In stark contrast, the BMW driver emerged from the incident physically unscathed and exited his vehicle without delay. Esor News further revealed additional dashcam evidence, highlighting the BMW’s reckless driving just before the collision. Another motorist captured the BMW travelling at excessive speeds, swerving recklessly, and narrowly avoiding a crash with a footpath, corroborating claims of dangerous driving leading up to the crash. The public outcry has been immediate and fierce, especially given the political nuances surrounding the BMW driver. As the son of a significant political figure in Pathum Thani, and a candidate himself, the incident has entered the realm of political discourse, prompting calls for transparency and justice. Local authorities have yet to issue a formal statement regarding potential charges or legal actions against the BMW driver, fuelling further frustration and the perception of preferential treatment due to his political ties. Social media platforms are rife with demands for accountability, with residents vocalising concerns over safety and questioning the integrity of local leadership. This incident, while deeply personal for those directly involved, touches on broader social issues within the region, casting a spotlight on road safety, ethical behaviour, and the influence of political connections in judicial proceedings. As the story unfolds, the community remains vigilant, eager for a resolution that upholds justice and deters future misconduct, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-17

The incident unfolded near a fresh market and the Bangkok Bank branch, sparking discussions among startled onlookers. The man, appearing to be between 25 and 30 years old, walked uninhibited in the direction of the Heroines Monument. Sa, a local vendor, recounted, "He didn’t cause any trouble, just walked as if nothing was amiss." Witnesses noted the man was clean and groomed, though his peculiar behaviour prompted concerns over his mental health or possible intoxication. The village headman, Noppharit Rungruang, along with local security and police from Thalang Station, responded swiftly to the scene. They encountered the man walking against traffic, still nude and incoherent. An officer stated, "He couldn’t tell us his name. We suspect intoxication or mental issues." Believed to be a middle-aged Myanmar national, his identity remains unconfirmed. Police detained the man without trouble, escorting him to Thalang Police Station for further investigation. Authorities are diligently working to contact his employer and verify his immigration status before proceeding with any legal or medical measures. Local social media buzzed with mixed reactions—concern for the man's health and shock at the public nudity. Police have urged the public to report similar incidents and affirmed they are handling the case with proper care, prioritising the man’s well-being while probing for any additional needs, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-04-17
