Honda Motor will cease vehicle production at its Ayutthaya factory by 2025, redirecting its efforts to consolidate operations at the Prachin Buri plant, the company announced today, July 9. This strategic shift underscores the increasing challenges Japan’s second-largest automaker faces in Southeast Asia, as Chinese brands aggressively vie for market share in Thailand amidst rising consumer interest in electric vehicles (EVs). A spokesperson confirmed that after ceasing vehicle production, the Ayutthaya plant, which kicked off operations in 1996, will pivot to manufacturing car parts. Vehicle production will be centralised at the Prachin Buri plant, operational since 2016. These two facilities are Honda’s only manufacturing plants in Thailand. The combined vehicle production at Honda’s Thai plants has declined from 228,000 units in 2019 to below 150,000 annually over the past four years through 2023. Sales in Thailand have also dropped, remaining under 100,000 units annually for the same period. The spokesperson noted that Honda aims to address the disparity between production and sales within Thailand. Despite these local challenges, Honda continues to export vehicles from Thailand, primarily to other Southeast Asian markets like Indonesia and the Philippines. Currently, Honda has no plans for new investments in Thailand. In China, Honda and fellow Japanese automaker Nissan Motor are grappling with intense competition from burgeoning Chinese brands. These competitors attract consumers with affordable, software-enhanced electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids. Japanese automakers risk losing market share in regions outside China, such as Southeast Asia, to emerging Chinese brands that are expanding their export activities and establishing overseas production facilities, reported Bangkok Post. In related news, BYD inaugurated its first EV manufacturing plant outside China in Rayong, Thailand, marking a significant milestone with the production of its eight millionth new energy vehicle. The new facility, located on a 600-rai (approximately 948,000 square metres) plot within the WHA Industrial Estate in Rayong, was officially opened on July 4. This marks BYD’s expansion into the global market with an investment exceeding 35 billion baht, covering nine projects including parts and battery production. The plant has a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year. By Ryan Turner Image courtesy of Kyodo/Japan Times Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-09 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

The majority of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand in the second quarter of this year were lured by the country’s delectable cuisine and exotic fruits, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand. The Council’s report, published last Thursday, July 4, surveyed 205 Chinese nationals. The participants included 44% from Mainland China, 24% from Hong Kong, 18% from Taiwan, and 14% from Singapore. It unveiled intriguing insights into their spending habits and preferences. Surprisingly, Singaporean tourists topped the spending chart with an average of 54,456 baht per trip, followed by those from Mainland China (46,153 baht), Taiwan (37,295 baht), and Hong Kong (36,144 baht). Mainland Chinese tourists were also the most frequent visitors, averaging 2.83 trips per person, compared to 2.58 for Singaporeans, 2.49 for Hong Kong residents, and 2.32 for Taiwanese travellers. The survey also highlighted a significant shift towards independent travel, with 88% of Chinese nationals preferring to explore Thailand on their own, while only 12% opted for organised tours. However, 45% of respondents noted an increase in travel costs compared to pre-Covid times. In contrast, 44% reported no change, and 11% observed a decrease in their travel expenditure. To save costs, 38% of tourists planned to cut back on shopping and souvenirs, 33% on travel expenses, 31% on accommodation, 26% on entertainment, and 12% on food. Delicious food was the top reason for visiting Thailand, followed by safety (55%), reasonable travel expenses (48%), high-quality services (45%), diverse destinations (32%), and convenient shopping centres (20%). Top activities for Chinese tourists included savouring Thai food and fruits (84%), indulging in spa and massage treatments (73%), shopping (55%), experiencing nightlife (55%), beach activities (30%), river cruises (21%), floating markets (16%), zoos and amusement parks (16%), and eco-tourism like bathing with elephants (13%). Bangkok emerged as the most popular destination (100%), followed by Chiang Mai (20%), Phuket (18%), Pattaya (16%), and other locations. Most tourists preferred hotels priced between 2,001 and 3,000 baht per night and prioritised accommodations with breakfast service (65%) and proximity to tourist attractions (51%). The report also shed light on various complaints, with tourists expressing uncertainty about unfair taxi services, safety concerns, pollution, and cleanliness. Despite these issues, Thailand remains a favoured destination for its culinary delights and diverse experiences, reported The Nation. On July 9, 2024, Somsak Thepsuthin, the Public Health Minister, spoke out about the ongoing debate over labeling cannabis a type 5 drug by the Ministry of Public Health's Narcotics Control Committee. The proposal is currently under review by the Narcotics Control Board (NCB) and a decision is expected by the month’s end. If given the green light, secondary laws and ministry regulations will be created. However, the Health Minister has the authority to directly declare cannabis a type 5 drug, explained Somsak. Somsak stressed the need to act swiftly, referencing the main drug law, in force since December 9, 2021, which demands supplementary laws to be completed within two years, now pushed to December 9, 2024. He provided public health concerns, such as the alleged potential for a drop in IQ and ongoing public apprehension, as reasons for the quick action. However, he noted that this classification isn't set in stone and could be changed by future governments or legal efforts. Somsak denied claims by the Thai Cannabis Network that the decision was swayed by influential business interests, emphasizing that the goal is to maintain public welfare. He recognized the need for accessible medicinal cannabis but highlighted the importance of careful regulation. He also assured that businesses or individuals who had been previously freed from cannabis-related charges would not be negatively affected by this reclassification. They would be safeguarded under the current laws if they declared their intent and had a legal license. In response to protestors' calls for clarification, Somsak repeated that the Ministry of Public Health had shared accurate information and provided instructions. He pointed out that any further inquiries should be directed to the NCB, reported by The Pattaya News. Photo via The Pattaya News -- 2024-07-09 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Ex-MP Demands Probe into Thaksin's Hospital Meeting Amidst Power Abuse Claims File photo for reference only Former Democratic MP, Theptai Seanapong, has requested a probe into a meeting that allegedly took place between ex-National Police Chief, Sereepisuth Temeeyaves, and former PM Thaksin Shinawatra in the Police General Hospital. Former Democratic MP, Theptai Seanapong, has requested a probe into a meeting that allegedly took place between ex-National Police Chief, Sereepisuth Temeeyaves, and former PM Thaksin Shinawatra in the Police General Hospital. Sereepisuth, who had reportedly spoken to two media platforms, mentioned that he visited Thaksin in the hospital during his prison term for medical aid. Thaksin, according to Sereepisuth, wanted him to dismiss his complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). The complaint was against PM Srettha Thavisin's supposed misuse of authority when appointing Torsak Sukvimol as the National Police Chief. Sereepisuth disclosed to the press that he told Thaksin that the issue was with the NACC, but Thaksin requested to deal with it himself. Thaksin's sister and former PM, Yingluck, apparently also contacted Sereepisuth with the same request. Following Sereepisuth's statement, Theptai believes Thaksin's requirement to move from the Corrections Department Hospital to the Police General Hospital citing severe illness was false. Theptai posted on Facebook that these events suggest Yingluck and Thaksin are the real power behind the government and it suggests that Srettha is no more than an employee for a family-owned Shinawatra company. Thailand govt to review Thap Lan National Park boundary Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Patcharawat Wongsuwan addressed public concerns over the proposed boundary adjustments to Thap Lan National Park in Prachin Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima. Public opinion will be considered before final decisions are made by this Friday, July 12. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1331919-thailand-govt-to-review-thap-lan-national-park-boundary/ -
Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Patcharawat Wongsuwan addressed public concerns over the proposed boundary adjustments to Thap Lan National Park in Prachin Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima. Public opinion will be considered before final decisions are made by this Friday, July 12. The issue currently undergoing public consultation has drawn mixed reactions, with some citizens voicing strong opposition. The consultation period is set to conclude on July 12, after which the Department of National Parks (DNP) will review the feedback and finalise actions within 30 days. Presently, villagers occupy approximately 50,000 rai of land out of a total of 260,000 rai in the area. When questioned about public opposition, particularly concerns that the land reallocation could benefit private investors, Patcharawat assured that all opinions would be taken into account. DNP Director-General Attapol Charoenchansa highlighted the historical context of the issue. Since 1981, the area has been a subject of contention. Initially a forest reserve, it was later designated as a national park, overlapping with lands allocated for agricultural use by local communities. This overlap has been acknowledged as an oversight by the Royal Forest Department (RFD). Efforts to resolve this began in 2000 with a survey to redefine boundaries, but legal complexities have prolonged the situation. Successive governments have attempted to address the issue, leading to a resolution by the National Land Policy Committee (NLPC) to reallocate community land under the supervision of the Agricultural Land Reform Office (ALRO). The Cabinet endorsed this resolution, except for landowners involved in legal disputes. Attapol noted that the DNP is gathering public opinions both offline and online, which will then be presented to the National Park Committee for review within 30 days. The Committee aims to balance agricultural needs with forest conservation. The discussion involves over 200,000 rai of land, including 12,000 rai occupied by resort groups under legal scrutiny. The focus is on how to manage these areas while considering the rights of original landowners. Attapol clarified that eligibility for land use will be determined by legal criteria, and the Committee will consider all feedback before reaching a final decision. When asked if the Cabinet’s resolution on March 14 last year favoured private investors, Attapol responded that the government is working to ensure that land remains state-owned. Any use must meet legal qualifications and non-compliant land will revert to the state. Further questions highlighted concerns about equal rights for original and new land occupants. Attapol explained that while the land status remains consistent, individual qualifications vary. Long-term residents and those who have recently purchased land will be assessed differently. Farmers using land for agriculture will be given priority in the reallocation process. The DNP will wait for the National Park Committee’s recommendations before potentially proposing any changes to the existing Cabinet resolution. The focus remains on resolving long-standing land disputes while ensuring fair access and conservation of national park lands, reported KhaoSod. A condo in the Lat Phrao area is dealing with a severe health issue due to a parasite infection in their water supply. Over 100 residents are affected, and some could risk losing their sight if not treated on time. Pook Sukonta Berthebaud, a well-known social media influencer, revealed the concerning situation on Facebook. According to him, residents are being infected by parasites called Acanthamoeba and Microsporidia. This was confirmed through tests done by Chulalongkorn and Siriraj hospitals. One resident called on Pook to help spread the word about their situation. They mentioned that despite their condo costing nearly 10 million baht, the management has not resolved the issue and asked residents to install water filters themselves. The residents are not happy with this response, arguing it is not enough and overlooks their wellbeing and safety. Despite the seriousness of the problem, no definite action has been taken by the condo’s management so far. The residents are worried since Acanthamoeba can cause severe eye infections resulting in blindness if not treated promptly. On the other hand, Microsporidia can lead to various health issues, especially in those with weak immune systems. Residents are using social media and other platforms to express their concerns and request help. They are stressing on the urgency and possible long-term health effects if the situation is not addressed soon. Major Breakthrough Against Human Trafficking: Thai Police Dismantle Call Centre Scam File photo for reference only Thai police have captured key members of a human trafficking group that conned local residents into working in call centers under false promises of high wages, where they were insteadforced into labor and kept confined. Thai police have captured key members of a human trafficking group that conned local residents into working in call centers under false promises of high wages, where they were insteadforced into labor and kept confined. The operation was led by Saruti Kwangsopa, Chief of the Anti-Human Trafficking Division (AHTD). The chief sent a team composed of Police Colonel Pattanapong Sripinpraw and Lieutenant Colonel Worapol Lertwiriyapong to arrest a 31-year-old man named Teerapon. His arrest took place in front of a condominium in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district, following a warrant issued for his arrest by the Criminal Court on June 20 for being part of human trafficking through coercion, con artistry, and misuse of power. Police also nabbed a 21-year old woman named Aranya in Wiang Chai district, Chiang Rai province. Another individual, 31-year-old Nattanicha, was charged with similar offenses while already detained at the Central Women’s Correctional Institution. Last year, in October and November, the Myanmar government worked with Chinese police to take down call center gangs in Laukkai, Myanmar. These missions led to the rescue of 266 Thai victims who were then ushered back home after a screening and separation process as part of the National Referral Mechanism (NRM). Colonel Pattanapong Sripinpraw was tasked with investigating a call centre group led by a Chinese individual named Fei Yang, which included 11 suspects. Four out of these suspects were Thai HR personnel who deceived Thai people into working as chat administrators by offering salaries between 25,000 to 50,000 baht. However, once the victims entered the country, they were coerced and kept confined to work for the call center which was involved in a variety of scams, from romantic to investment. Teerapon, who was thought to be Fei Yang’s assistant, denied the accusations, saying he worked in an entertainment venue as an interpreter and had nothing to do with the call center. Aranya, supposedly handling HR, used a fake Facebook profile to attract Thai citizens. She admitted to recruitment but denied knowing about the forced labor or the scams. Similarly, Nattanicha, still in custody, confessed to recruiting but pleaded ignorant about any coercive practices. Post questioning, the suspects were handed over to Division 2 of the Anti-Human Trafficking Division investigators for possible future legal action. A young soldier has been arrested in relation to the murder of his girlfriend, a former housemaid, in an apartment in central Bangkok. Police are arranging with the military to transfer the suspect for a more in-depth investigation. The case came to attention when local police responded to a call at an apartment in the city center on July 9. They found the body of 30-year-old Khemruthai in her room on the second floor. Khemruthai, who had previously worked at the Parliament as a housemaid, was found dead on her bed with a stab wound in her chest. Early investigations suggest she had been dead for seven days. Khemruthai’s sister, Darika, aged 29, expressed her shock upon hearing the news. Although she was aware of her sister's one-year relationship with a soldier, she claims she wasn't informed about any problems between the two. The landlord noted that Khemruthai had started living with her boyfriend three months ago. Despite this, the landlord didn't get many opportunities to interact with the boyfriend since Khemruthai was last seen in June when she paid her rent. Police quickly identified Khemruthai’s soldier boyfriend, 24-year-old Sunai, as the prime suspect. He was arrested in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai. Authorities are coordinating with military personnel for his transfer for legal proceedings. An autopsy concluded that Khemruthai had been dead for seven to ten days, with the cause of death being a single stab wound to her torso. A knife, the suspected murder weapon, was found at the scene of the crime. Sunai, who initially met Khemruthai on TikTok, had been active on social media shortly before the alleged incident. A recent post on his Facebook showed him in his military uniform holding a rifle. His social media persona emphasized his military role and his posts hinted to a violent mindset. This disturbing case has raised questions about the events leading to this brutal murder. The police are still gathering evidence and conducting interviews to better understand what happened. A 23-year-old Thai-Singaporean singer, Kittisak “Hun” Boonsan, has reported that he was physically assaulted by a Thai man known only as 'Q'. The singer alleges that the assault occurred after 'Q' accused him of having an affair with his girlfriend at a condominium in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. According to Hun, he had been seeing 'Q's girlfriend, 29-year-old Cream, but he thought she was single. After receiving a late-night message from Cream, who appeared too intoxicated to go home alone, Hun took her back to her condo and stayed until the early hours of the morning. Unfortunately, his exit from the condo block was denied by necessity for a keycard which he didn't possess. After contacting Cream to request for the key card, 'Q', rather than Cream, answered the call and agreed to bring the card. Instead of providing the keycard, Q attacked Hun. Hun claims his inebriation prevented him from defending himself. Luckily, his chin and nose which had recently benefitted from cosmetic surgery remained unharmed. However, the singer suffered facial bruising which resulted in being unable to work. Additionally, his record label has ended their association with Hun, citing potential damage to their reputation due to the physical altercation. In his statement to police, Hun reiterated that he believed Cream was single, a claim supported by her employer at a local restaurant. He expressed his preference for a calm and direct discussion over the issue rather than an act of violence. He has demanded that 'Q' be held accountable for his actions. Hun’s mother, a 45-year old known as 'A', flew from Singapore to the police station to insist on taking legal action to the highest degree against 'Q'. Police are looking into the case of a man's body that was found floating in a water canal in the Bang Phli area, near Suvarnabhumi. The body was found near a parked pickup truck which had a child car seat in it. Eyewitnesses reportedly saw the man sitting on a nearby bridge the previous night. The incident was reported to the police yesterday, July 8, at 3 pm. Kittiphon Poldech, a police inspector from the Bang Phli Police Station in Samut Prakan Province, together with a forensic team from Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital, quickly responded to the incident. Other officials who went to the scene included Deputy Investigating Inspector Thannithi Assavaraksaree and a rescue team from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. A white Isuzu pickup truck with Bangkok number plates was found parked close by. There were personal effects and a child car seat inside the truck. The body of a man was discovered floating face-down in the canal. The body was retrieved for examination. The dead man was said to be tall and robust with a dark red complexion, short hair, and no shirt. He was wearing black sports shorts. The man was later identified as Hansak, 47 years old. An eyewitness claimed that they saw a man sitting on the bridge around midnight, his legs hanging off the side. The person saw only the man, not the vehicle, and did not think anything strange until the body was found in the water. At that point, they realized it was the same man they had seen and called the police. The police are presently trying to find the dead man's kin. They suspect the man entered the water voluntarily. The body has now been taken for an autopsy as per legal requirements. "I saw him sitting on the bridge at midnight. I didn't see the car and didn't think anything bad would happen. I only realized it was him when the body was found," the eyewitness said. The police are collecting more evidence and questioning other witnesses to figure out the circumstances leading up to the man's apparent drowning. They're also checking the area's CCTV footage to see whether anyone else was involved or if there are any extra details to aid in the investigation, according to KhaoSod. Village health volunteers nationwide have expressed strong opposition to an age limit proposed in a Public Health Ministry-sponsored bill, which would mandate their retirement at the age of 70. The bill, currently open for online public hearing until this Thursday, July 11, aims to impose an age cap on health volunteers, replacing the current lifelong service term. Volunteers in Chiang Mai plan to submit a letter of protest to the provincial governor, while their counterparts in Khon Kaen decry the proposed limit as unfair, particularly to those who have dedicated decades to the role without financial support. The Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) stated that the bill intends to enhance the skills of health volunteers for family and community health promotion, formally recognise their contributions, and ensure they receive appropriate benefits. The bill proposes the establishment of a panel, chaired by the public health permanent secretary, to support and promote health volunteers’ work, along with a fund to back their efforts. Thailand boasts 1 million health volunteers who are instrumental in advancing family and community health security. Ketsarin Saengsawat, a health volunteer from Khon Kaen, criticised the proposed age limit as unfair to long-serving volunteers who began their roles before the introduction of a monthly allowance. “If the age limit applies to new volunteers, that’s acceptable. But the current ones should be allowed to work until they die or resign.” She also highlighted that the role has gained appeal in recent years due to a monthly allowance of 2,000 baht and an increase in the funeral welfare fund from 150,000 baht to 540,000 baht. Age limit raise Ura Prapmontri, another Khon Kaen volunteer, argued that age should not be seen as a barrier, noting that many volunteers have successfully adapted to digital technology. She suggested an age limit of 80 instead of 70. “If they are forced to retire, we’ll fight this injustice. Those who rely on the monthly allowance will be affected. The amount can help with their household expenses and debt payments.” Treechada Srithada, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health, clarified that the age limit would not apply to those already serving when the law takes effect. However, these volunteers must register within one year of the law’s implementation to retain their positions. She urged health volunteers to participate in the public hearing process, assuring them that their feedback would be considered before the bill is finalised and submitted to the Cabinet, reported Bangkok Post.
