Thailand’s Tourism Authority (TAT) plans to achieve 7.5% revenue growth or 3.4 trillion baht in 2025, while private operators advocate for airfare subsidies to boost income, to mark the upcoming year as Thailand Grand Tourism Year. During the TAT Action Plan 2025 meeting yesterday, July 8, Chairman Natthriya Thaweevong announced that the government aims to mark 2025 as the Thailand Grand Tourism Year in a bid to position the tourism industry as the fastest-growing among the eight pillars of the Ignite Thailand scheme. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool projected that Thailand should rank among the top 14 most-visited countries next year, with notable advancements in its sustainable tourism index. With a modest budget of 6.23 billion baht for 2025, the agency has set a growth target of 5% to 7.5% for tourism revenue, aiming for a maximum of 3.4 trillion baht. The agency’s goals for arrivals include 40 million foreign tourists and 220 million domestic trips next year. Foreign tourists are expected to spend an average of 57,180 baht per trip, while domestic tourists are forecast to spend at least 4,000 baht per trip. Thapanee stated that various promotional campaigns and festivals could help second-tier cities increase their revenue by 25%, up from the current 10%. TAT President Chamnan Srisawat emphasised the importance of the final quarter of this year in boosting tourism expenditure. The goal is to meet state targets of at least 3 trillion baht from 36.7 million foreign arrivals and 200 million domestic trips, which are previous targets. Chamnan indicated that the new target of 3.5 trillion baht in tourism revenue is attainable but requires aggressive promotions in both domestic and international markets, focusing on high-purchasing-power groups. For international markets, Chamnan suggests the TAT collaborate with tour operators to offer special airfare packages, with 29 TAT overseas offices partnering with at least 10 tour companies each to launch these packages. Chamnan recognises the potential in the Middle East. “The market with the greatest potential is the Middle East, particularly targeting the medical and wellness segment.” The policy to promote 55 second-tier tourism cities aligns with sustainable tourism growth but Chamnan stressed the need for a master plan for supply development, reported Bangkok Post. “Encourage Joint Commission International-accredited hospital investment in provinces with border checkpoints to grow the medical tourism market, targeting neighbouring countries.” By Ryan Turner Image courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-09 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Thai and French officials convened a special seminar to enhance the defence industries of both nations, with Thailand aiming to procure defence products valued at 200 billion baht over the next two decades. Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang and the French Ambassador to Thailand Jean-Claude Poimboeuf opened the Thailand-France Seminar on the Defence Industry 2024 at the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Defence. The event attracted numerous high-level officials from defence-related agencies and 100 entrepreneurs from both Thailand and France. The seminar was part of an agreement outlined in a letter of intent (LOI) jointly signed by Thailand’s Defence Industry and Energy Centre and France’s defence procurement agency, the Direction Generale de l’Armement (DGA), on May 17. This LOI aims to establish guidelines and facilitate the exchange of ideas to encourage investment and create a network between Thai and French defence industries. The effort aligns with the Thai government’s objective to bolster the country’s capability to produce its defence products. Sutin highlighted that ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East have led many countries to deplete their defence equipment stockpiles, resulting in heightened arms accumulation and investment in defence industries. “Thailand is currently producing four types of defence products: armoured vehicles, warships, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and firearms and ammunition.” Sutin noted that these products have the potential to be sold to countries in ASEAN, the Middle East, and Africa. The Thai defence minister revealed that the Thai government plans to procure 200 billion baht worth of defence vehicles, warships, UAVs, firearms, and ammunition. Manufacturing these products domestically could generate significant revenue for the Thai economy. The seminar followed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s meeting with the French president in France in May and Sutin’s visit to Paris in June for the Eurosatory 2024 exhibition, reported Bangkok Post. Minister Supamas Acts Swiftly Amid University Degree-Buying Scandal File photo for reference only In an effort to maintain academic respectability, Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Minister, Supamas Isarabhakdi, pledged to take immediate action over accusations of a private university purportedly trading degrees to rich students without requiring them to attend classes. In an effort to maintain academic respectability, Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Minister, Supamas Isarabhakdi, pledged to take immediate action over accusations of a private university purportedly trading degrees to rich students without requiring them to attend classes. Whisperings surrounding this issue led to an announcement on July 8 by Minister Supamas about the creation of a formal inquiry committee headed by the ministry's Deputy Secretary, Professor Doctor Supachai Pathumnakul. While the minister did not directly name the accused university, speculation is rife that it belongs to the city of Phitsanulok. The committee's primary responsibility will be to conduct a rigorous probe into the accusations of the university licensing degrees and inform the ministry of their findings. These accusations came to light when several individuals reported being swindled by a foundation president into spending large sums of money in return for degrees without attending classes. The degrees, however, never materialized despite the individuals making payment. The university initially refuted their participation in any degree-selling scheme. However, a statement released on July 4 established that an internal investigation showed a lecturer's involvement in selling degrees for 200,000 baht each. The lecturer implicated in the scandal has been dismissed from the institution and legal measures are being taken, though the lecturer's identity was not released. Minister Supamas also highlighted that due to regulatory non-compliance concerning the number of qualified lecturers, the ministry assumed control of the university from March 14, 2023, to June 4, 2024. This period under strict scrutiny would have averted any degree-selling mischief, possibly disappointing hopeful degree purchasers. The minister stressed that the ministry will undertake an in-depth investigation of the university. She pledged that, should the allegations be validated, the university's administration could be subject to legal action and potentially lose its license. Last week, an incident occurred on the Pink Line train service where a door accidentally opened while the train was moving. The Transport Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, described this as a severe safety breach by the Northern Bangkok Monorail (NBM) and called for strict penalties to be imposed on the operator. He has commanded the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) to hold NBM accountable. The incident became public knowledge when a passenger filmed a train door opening in transit between the Lat Pla Khao and Nonthaburi stations. The shared video showed the train high above the ground, and it is fortunate that no one was near the door when it opened. The train stopped suddenly when an officer on board heard a strange noise. It turned out that a passenger's bag was stuck outside in the closed carriage door. Efforts to reopen the door and retrieve the bag resulted in a miscommunication, leading to the door opening before the train got to the station. Suriya emphasized on Sunday that safety in public transportation must not be taken lightly. The MRTA will warn the operator that failing to improve safety measures will result in penalties, including a reduction in performance scores. The operator will also be banned from bidding for contracts from the ministry. File photo for reference only -- 2024-07-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Thai Mobile Users' Final Date to Verify SIM Cards File photo for reference only Today, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has acknowledged it to be the last day for cellphone users with six or more SIM cards to confirm their identity or face the suspension of services like calls, text messages, and internet usage. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1331824-thai-mobile-users-final-date-to-verify-sim-cards/ -
Today, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has acknowledged it to be the last day for cellphone users with six or more SIM cards to confirm their identity or face the suspension of services like calls, text messages, and internet usage. Trirat Viriyasirikul, the current Secretary-General of NBTC, spoke about the deadline for multi-SIM card users to verify their identities. This step is aimed at preventing the misuse of mobile services for illicit activities. NBTC is asking users with between six and 100 SIM cards to confirm their identities through the procedures given by their cellphone providers. Those who overlook this deadline will find their SIM cards deactivated, barring them from making calls, texting, or using the internet. As of the end of June, out of 3,981,251 SIM cards needing confirmation, 1,635,407 users have already done so. More than 2.3 million SIM cards are yet to be confirmed today to evade service suspension. But, even if the service is deactivated, users may reactivate their services by completing the identity verification process. NBTC's process applies to two groups: those with six to 100 SIM cards and those with more than 100. For customers with over 100 SIM cards, the deadline was on February 14. From 5,078,283 SIM cards, 3,914,057 have been confirmed, and the remaining unverified ones have been deactivated. NBTC's initiative is to improve security and prevent unlawful activities via mobile networks. This not only aids law enforcement but also protection from possible misuse of registered SIM cards. Trirat emphasised the importance of complying with this regulation, urging users to promptly complete the verification process to avoid any interruption in services. The NBTC will keep working closely with mobile network providers to make the verification process simpler. It provides multiple ways, including online platforms and physical service centres. This initiative showcases the NBTC's pledge to uphold the integrity and security of Thailand's telecommunications infrastructure. By enforcing strict SIM card registration rules, it aims to maintain a safe and secure environment for all mobile users in the country. Users impacted by this regulation are advised to contact their providers for further help and to complete the verification process as soon as possible. The NBTC will continue to track adherence and take necessary steps to maintain all regulations. This highlights the importance of regulatory steps in protecting telecommunication services from illegal exploitation. Users should be informed about such rules and quickly comply to keep their mobile services uninterrupted. 2 Thai women unite to expose soldier’s extortion scheme Photo via Channel 3 Two Thai victims stepped forward to warn other women about their ex-boyfriend, a soldier in the Royal Thai Army (RTA) after he extorted money from them and recorded explicit videos involving one victim. Two Thai victims stepped forward to warn other women about their ex-boyfriend, a soldier in the Royal Thai Army (RTA) after he extorted money from them and recorded explicit videos involving one victim. The first victim, 41 year old Nok, disclosed to Channel 3 that she initially encountered Lance Corporal Sun on TikTok. Sun had been interacting with her videos for over two months, though she hadn’t paid much attention to him. They began talking via TikTok’s inbox, and Sun told Nok that he served at an army base in Ratchaburi province and was close to many high-ranking soldiers. Nok said Sun’s charm made her continue talking to him. According to Nok, Sun frequently mentioned his financial issues, saying his salary couldn’t cover his expenses. He sent Nok pictures of his meagre meals, and she felt sorry for him, giving him 500 to 1,000 baht each time so he could eat better. After talking for a while, Sun arranged to meet Nok at a restaurant. They returned home together and engaged in sexual activity, which Sun recorded. Nok began to suspect Sun’s intentions after dating for some time. She noticed he always mentioned money and asked her for support, leading her to lose over 20,000 baht after a month of their relationship. Adultery with colleague’s wife Nok said Sun might have sensed her realisation and blocked her contact on all channels. Confident about Sun’s behaviour, Nok investigated his history and found three other women who had fallen victim to him. Nok reported the matter to Sun’s superior, and he was ordered to pay her 100,000 baht and jailed for 15 days. However, Sun threatened and insulted Nok after his release. Nok decided to contact other victims, including a 39 year old woman named Kai, to pursue legal action against the soldier. She and Kai want Sun expelled from the RTA. Kai recounted how she paid for Sun’s flight to meet her in Chiang Mai and covered all his expenses, including food, transport, and designer clothes. She even gave him 3,000 baht extra to spend at his army base. Sun demanded more and more money from Kai, causing her to distance herself. She then received a message from Nok and decided to cooperate with her to sue Sun. Nok and Kai revealed they found Sun in a relationship with a married beauty clinic owner. They contacted her but she did not believe their warnings and defended Sun. The beauty clinic owner is reportedly the wife of a soldier serving in the same army base as Sun. The two victims urge any other women who have fallen victim to Sun to come forward and take legal action. Transport Deputy Minister Surapong Piyachote announced Thailand’s pledge to streamline the efficiency of its air navigation services and related aviation solutions in routing, and emergency scenarios. This commitment aligns with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s national development policies, which prioritise improving aviation as a key agenda for progress. This announcement comes in response to a report showing a significant surge in international flights from China, reflecting a 100% growth. From October 2023 to May 2024, flights between Thailand and China accounted for 20% of the total international flight volume, with 55,433 flights marking a 213% increase from the same period last year. Projections for 2024 suggest that this number will rise to 86,150 flights, a 126% increase over the previous year. Currently, Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Samui, and Krabi International Airports handle flights from China, with cargo and passenger services available at most locations except Don Mueang and Samui. Many airlines have resumed services on the Thailand-China route, with plans to add more flights to key economic destinations such as Chengdu. In the past eight months, Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Samui airports recorded 5,896 round-trip flights to Chengdu. This number is expected to rise to 8,850 in 2024, representing a 265% year-on-year increase. Surapong highlighted that Thailand’s aviation sector stands to benefit from enhanced collaboration with China, aimed at improving efficiency and capacity. The Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (Aerothai) has been tasked with expanding capacity to accommodate the growing number of flights. A new flight route termed the ‘Parallel Route’ is being developed along with air navigation infrastructure to enhance air traffic service efficiency. Technology upgrades Aerothai is also upgrading its technology systems, airspace structure, and management protocols to handle the increased flight volume and ensure convenient, fast, and safe services for tourists. Surapong stressed the importance of preparing a new air traffic management system and establishing the necessary infrastructure to support future growth. By 2038, Thailand anticipates handling an estimated 2 million flights, necessitating advanced planning and airspace design. Aerothai President Nopasit Chakpitak outlined measures to bolster air traffic services, including the readiness of the Air Traffic Flow Management system to support increased traffic and ensure safety. The agency has set guidelines for air traffic service operations to enhance capacity, particularly as part of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Development and Expansion Project Phase 2. The airport’s third runway is slated to become operational in September 2024. Efforts are underway to optimise runway usage by balancing the distance between incoming and outgoing aircraft, aiming to match the standards of leading global airports. Technologies such as the Arrival Manager system and the Intelligent Departure system are being implemented to improve air traffic agility and maintain punctual flight schedules, thereby maximising the number of accommodated flights. To further establish Thailand as an aviation hub, Aerothai is developing U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City. Currently, in its initial phase, this project focuses on enhancing air cargo transportation from the Eastern Economic Region, particularly flights from China, and aims to transform U-Tapao Airport into a leading aircraft maintenance centre. Apart from the air navigation services, Aerothai is also adopting the Aerotropolis concept from Chengdu International Airport, leveraging advanced technology and effective airport management to elevate its services. Extensive research and data analytics are being employed to improve all aspects of Aerothai’s operations, ensuring it meets international standards and supports Thailand’s ambitions in the aviation sector, reported The Nation. The 2025 budget bill outlines the allocation of 12 billion baht for a new VIP aircraft and 3.3 billion baht for two mid-sized helicopters designated for important passengers. These additions aim to bolster the Royal Thai Air Force’s (RTAF) capabilities in supporting various training programs and other essential activities. Intended to replace the ageing Airbus 340 scheduled for decommissioning in 2029, the new VIP aircraft is part of a strategic upgrade. RTAF Commander-in-Chief Punpakdee Pattanakul highlighted the necessity of a long-haul aircraft for vital passengers and emergency assistance during conflicts or disasters. “Thailand needs a long-haul aircraft for important passengers and for providing assistance during emergencies such as war or disaster.” The new aircraft would also serve the prime minister and Cabinet members, eliminating the reliance on chartered planes. Recently, the existing Airbus 340-500 was utilised to evacuate Thai workers from Israel and Sudan, demonstrating the practical need for such an asset. The two mid-sized helicopters would enhance the RTAF’s search and rescue operations and other emergency services. The specific models for the aircraft and helicopters are yet to be chosen, pending budget approval. Punpakdee added that the approved budget had to be known first before deciding on the models. This procurement underscores Thailand’s commitment to maintaining a robust and responsive air force, ensuring readiness for both official duties and unforeseen crises, reported Bangkok Post. Bangkok's Mayor Called to Address Issues of Homelessness and Sex Work File photo for reference only A Facebook page named "Hey, This is Thailand’s Footpath" has called on Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to handle a situation near the Airport Rail Link Makkasan Station where homeless people and sex workers are occupying the footpath. A Facebook page named "Hey, This is Thailand’s Footpath" has called on Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to handle a situation near the Airport Rail Link Makkasan Station where homeless people and sex workers are occupying the footpath. The page, on Saturday, July 6, shared a photograph showing a clothes rack on the path across from Asoke Skin Hospital. The accompanying caption reported the path is filthy because of makeshift houses, litter, and the presence of sex workers. The photo also displayed an area where possibly homeless individuals are staying, with a plastic sheet as a roof and makeshift beds behind a tree. There were also visible piles of plastic bags. The photo drew responses from internet users demanding Chadchart to take action, arguing that footpaths should be for public use, not a selected group, even if they are homeless. Some shared their encounters while others tagged Chadchart's official Facebook page and the relevant authorities. One individual recounted seeing people burning the litter and the local authorities rejecting to handle it as the area belongs to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). Another said it might be 100 years before Thailand's footpaths could be as clean as those in other countries, while some questioned if Chadchart was aware of the situation. Channel 7 reported that last year, the Railway Police division was disbanded, leaving the area unattended. As a result, over 10 homeless individuals have made this area their home. Residents reported that numerous transgender sex workers operate on the footpath at night. They have requested for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration or the SRT to install lights to deter them. As a tribute to King Maha Vajiralongkorn's 72nd birthday, 10,000 boiled eggs were given out to the people of Chon Buri by the Royal Volunteers. The handout took place at the Wat Woraprot Sangkhawat temple in the Phan Thong district. Doctor Kriangsak Saengchan, a Royal Volunteer, joined forces with other volunteer groups and the National Municipal Association of Thailand (NMAT). They worked with Phra Khru Thawon Sattakhun, the head monk of Wat Woraprot, to carry out the distribution. The eggs they handed out came from Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan, a temple in Chachoengsao province, honored by the locals. The head monk of this temple, Phra Thep Phawana Wachirakun, donated about 340 trays of eggs for the occasion. More than 200 locals came to the temple to collect the eggs. They were all packaged by the volunteers into bags for distribution. The event was filled with vibrant activity as everyone pitched in to guarantee that all attendees got their share. This event took place in July in honor of the King's birthday, reported KhaoSod. The volunteers from different groups, including the Vihok Group and NMAT, collaborated on the project. The eggs are traditionally believed to bring good luck and prosperity and are known as fulfilment eggs. Doctor Kriangsak reflects the common belief that eating these eggs can enhance one’s fortune. He said, "Even for those having trouble sleeping, these eggs are believed to bring peaceful dreams. Tradition has it that they help end suffering, sadness, sickness, and danger, and bring good luck." The event underscored the significance of heartfelt goodwill actions. It demonstrated the unity and shared commitment of the Royal volunteers towards community service, all in the spirit of the royal celebration. They dedicated time and energy to carefully packing and distributing the eggs. File photo for reference only -- 2024-07-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Economic Struggles Slow Down Used Car Market File photo for reference only Used car dealers in Chiang Mai are battling to stay open in the face of severe economic challenges and escalating price wars amid electric and gasoline vehicles. Used car dealers in Chiang Mai are battling to stay open in the face of severe economic challenges and escalating price wars amid electric and gasoline vehicles. Due to these conditions leading to an increase of repossessed cars and stricter lending, the used car market continues to suffer. Numerous dealerships have had to close down, while others are trying to remain operational by selling vehicles at a notable loss. However, consumers could potentially benefit from this situation. Multiple Chiang Mai car dealerships have had to either shut down or downsize due to the economic challenges and the ongoing price competition between new electric vehicles and traditional gas cars. Teerapat Phisut, a Chiang Mai used car dealer, noted that this period is been the most difficult in his 25-year career. He further explained that he's been forced to sell cars at a huge loss to minimize his inventory and ensure sufficient cash flow. He has also introduced incentives like zero down payments, two-year warranties, and 24-hour emergency assistance. Promising clientele can even get cashback deals. Workers at various Chiang Mai used car dealerships are broadcasting sales pitches live and offering numerous promotions and services to draw in customers. Despite these attempts, the used car market in Chiang Mai remains dull. Similar sentiments were echoed by Boonthanom Phisut, the head of the Chiang Mai Used Car Dealers Association. He compared the current business environment to a boxer on the ropes, battered by difficult economic conditions, a rise in repossessed cars, stricter financing, and fierce pricing competition from new electric and gasoline vehicles. Only about 10% to 20% of customers pass the financing checks, and the fluctuating prices of used cars further complicate sales. While this is a challenging situation for dealers, it could be a great opportunity for consumers with purchasing power. Many buyers are discovering top-quality used cars at greatly lowered prices. The struggles faced by used car dealerships mirror deeper trends in Thailand's car market, including the increasing market share of electric vehicles. As Thai consumers grapple with reduced income and mounting debt, the effects spread throughout the whole economy, pressuring businesses in all sectors to adapt to survive. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has unveiled a strategy devised by the Ministry of Transport to elevate Suvarnabhumi Airport into the world's top 20 airports by the year 2029. This plan aligns with the Thai government's aspiration to establish Thailand as a leading global aviation center. The proposal comes on the heels of the airport's ascent to the 58th spot in 2024's Skytrax World's Best Airport rankings. The year prior, it had been ranked 68th. At present, Suvarnabhumi Airport, known for being one of the busiest across Asia, intends to increase its handling capacity to 170 million passengers and one million flights each year by 2029. Furthermore, there are ambitions to expand these numbers to 210 million passengers and 1.2 million flights annually by the year 2034. Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport, mainly serving low-cost airlines, also managed to secure a position among the top 10 in Skytrax's 2024 list of World's Best Low-Cost Airline Terminals. Between October 2023 and May 2024, the passenger traffic at Suvarnabhumi amounted to 81.05 million, which represents 83.4% of its passenger count compared to the period before the pandemic. It handled approximately 48.95 million domestic travelers. During this period, the airport also handled 490,970 flights, which is about 81% of the total flights handled in 2019. Suvarnabhumi is actively working on expansion projects, including increasing terminal space and finalizing a third runway. The completion of these projects, targeted for September, is expected to increase the airport's flight handling capacity from 68 to 94 flights per hour.
