Cabinet Lowers Meth Possession Limit to a Single Pill File photo for reference only The Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, has announced that the Cabinet has agreed to change the Ministry of Public Health's laws to lower the legal limit of methamphetamine in anyone's possession to a single pill. The Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, has announced that the Cabinet has agreed to change the Ministry of Public Health's laws to lower the legal limit of methamphetamine in anyone's possession to a single pill. In a Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister explained that the Ministry of Public Health had proposed new draft regulations which had been approved by the Cabinet. The primary change is that they are modifying the allowed quantity of narcotics and controlled psychotropic drugs that are assumed to be for personal use. The possession limit of methamphetamine has been changed from five pills down to just one. Other types of methamphetamine, such as powder or crystal, have also seen a reduction in the allowed amount, with the limit now being a single unit for usage or a net weight of 100 milligrams. This new limit also applies to the drug known as crystal meth or ice - now only one dose can be legally held. The Council of State's office has taken on the task of checking this new draft regulation's precision. This change, which limits pill or unit usage to a single one, is understood to be a method to reduce the number of smaller drug dealers. This could potentially break the cycle of drug distribution and also cut down the number of drugs held for illegal selling. Public Health Department Calls for Public Opinion on Reclassifying Cannabis Amid Protests File photo for reference only On June 11th, 2024, Thailand's Minister of Public Health, Somsak Thepsuthin, proposed a change to the country's laws on narcotics possession. The proposed amendment suggests lowering the number of methamphetamine pills from five to one that an individual can carry legally. If a person is found with more than one pill, they may be considered a drug dealer unless they prove otherwise. Instead of jailing, addicts would get assistance through rehabilitation programs. On June 11th, 2024, Thailand's Minister of Public Health, Somsak Thepsuthin, proposed a change to the country's laws on narcotics possession. The proposed amendment suggests lowering the number of methamphetamine pills from five to one that an individual can carry legally. If a person is found with more than one pill, they may be considered a drug dealer unless they prove otherwise. Instead of jailing, addicts would get assistance through rehabilitation programs. In addition to the amendments, sources of illegal drugs will be thoroughly investigated. This proposal is set to be discussed by the Thai government cabinet, reviewed by the Council of State, and revisited by the cabinet once more. The entire decision-making process is expected to conclude this month and results will be publicly shared afterwards. Furthermore, Somsak Thepsuthin responded to questions about the ongoing pro-cannabis protests happening at the Government House. The protesters demand that future cannabis regulations be based on scientific evidence and it should not be regarded as an illegal drug. Public opinion about cannabis will also be considered for this amendment. The Minister has requested feedback from the public on the government website over a 15-day period. Here, both supporters and opponents of cannabis reclassification can express their views. The decision on cannabis regulation will be officially announced by the Thai Ministry of Public Health, once approved by the Narcotics Prevention and Suppression Commission (NACC). This decision does not require additional cabinet or parliament discussions. Those protesting pro-cannabis demand a more democratic judgement method like a larger vote or parliamentary debate. They insist on cannabis regulation instead of making it illegal. They are staging a non-stop protest in Bangkok, vowing not to leave until the government works out a middle ground, deciding to govern cannabis use instead of outlawing it again. On Sunday, ten Thai crew members were saved from a sinking cargo ship off Cambodia's coast. The rescue took place on June 8 between Vang and Manas islands located in the Koh Ko Cang province. The Thai cargo ship, which was headed towards Cambodia, unexpectedly sank. Initial reports suggest the sinking may have been caused by water entering the ship from the front side. Local authorities and a volunteer rescue team from Sihanoukville performed a daring rescue operation, saving all the crew members. They were then quickly transported by speedboat to Sihanoukville. They are currently recuperating in a hotel located near the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, according to a local official in Preah Sihanouk. The official stated that the Thai Embassy in Cambodia would be informed to submit necessary immigration documents since the crew members' paperwork was lost in the sinking. The ages of the saved crew members, identified as Sopon Wantong, Sorasak Sasrimuang, Santina Nagara, Preecha Panchoo, Prakob Vechkit, Adisak Boonkun, Daurang Palnak, Santi Boonya, Arichai Jairak, and Worrathun Chimsawat, range between 30 and 70. Though the sea conditions were calm at the time, the ship sank due to sudden flooding, as reported by Thai PBS World. "Experts are still investigating to ascertain the exact cause of the incident", stated the report. File photo for reference only -- 2024-06-11 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Following a tip-off, police officers carried out a late-night raid at a well-known hotel in Bangkok on June 10 in which they arrested Naraset Thaiset and his accomplices. The arrest came after the police found six bags of crystal methamphetamine and a gun in their hotel room located in the Huai Khwang District's Bang Kapi. Naraset Thaiset is related to Deputy Interior Minister Chada Thaiset - his father is Chada's uncle. With him, individuals known only as Kitcha, Walis, and Anchaliporn were also arrested. The group is now facing charges for possessing and using the illegal drug methamphetamine. In addition, Thaiset has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as carrying it in public without a valid reason, said a spokesperson from the police. "The suspects had drugs and a gun on them, which resulted in their immediate arrest and the charges against them," the spokesperson added. The police have taken all suspects into custody, and they are currently waiting to face further legal action. This incident is a reminder of the ongoing problem of drug use and illegal firearms in Thailand that necessitates constant vigilance from law enforcement agencies. This raid on the hotel was part of larger efforts to tackle drug-related crimes in the city. Arresting Thaiset is significant not only because of his relation to a senior government official but also due to growing speculations about drug networks' influence and reach in the society. The police spokesperson emphasized that everyone is subject to the law - connections or status do not provide protection or immunity. "We are dedicated to addressing drug and firearm crimes with no exceptions," the police said. The police are now looking to take down the wider network associated with this incident and are asking the public for any information that could help keep the community safe and controlled. Additional arrests show Thai police's commitment to fight against illegal activities and ensure everyone gets justice, regardless of social or familial standing. The final outcomes for Thaiset and his partners will reflect the seriousness of their charges following the legal proceedings. Man Posing as Police Officer Arrested in Bang Kapi for 'Uniform' Fraud File photo for reference only A man was arrested in Bang Kapi yesterday for pretending to be a police officer and using this deceptive role to steal a mobile phone. A man was arrested in Bang Kapi yesterday for pretending to be a police officer and using this deceptive role to steal a mobile phone. He reportedly committed the crime because he was fond of the police uniform. This arrest was made possible after a former coworker reported the crime, allowing the Thai police to locate the suspect. The police arrested the 45-year-old impersonator, Sanae, in a dormitory in Huamark, Bang Kapi, Bangkok. The arrest came after an investigation that started on June 8 when the victim lodged a complaint at the Chalong Krung Police Station. The victim, who used to work with Sanae as a security guard, explained that Sanae had masqueraded as a police officer. He narrated that Sanae had come up to him, falsely saying that he had lost his phone and needed to borrow his for an emergency call. Sanae vanished with the phone shortly after. The police traced Sanae's location via their investigations. During his arrest, Sanae admitted to the crime and showed them where he had hidden the stolen items in his dormitory. They discovered police uniforms and patrol equipment in his room. Sanae admitted his preference for police clothes and his intention to convince his friend that he was a real police officer. The police have accused Sanae of nighttime theft using a vehicle, drug abuse, and have detained him. The confiscated items and Sanae have been given to the Chalong Krung Police Station for further legal actions. The police are also investigating to find out if Sanae has committed similar crimes in the past or if he has had any accomplices. The results of this investigation will influence further actions and any extra charges against him. This incident stands as a warning to stay alert and vigilant in daily encounters, particularly when dealing with people claiming to be in positions of authority. Thailand allocates 8 billion baht for research in AI and EV industry File photo for reference only The Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) has set aside an investment of 8 billion baht to boost its young researchers' base, focusing on crucial S-curve industries including artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicles (EVs), and quantum technologies. The Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) has set aside an investment of 8 billion baht to boost its young researchers' base, focusing on crucial S-curve industries including artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicles (EVs), and quantum technologies. As part of its 2025 budget, plans are underway to train 100,000 workers for the semiconductor industry, taking advantage of geopolitical issues. Chairman of the National Commission on Science, Research and Innovation, Sirirurg Songsivilai stated that Thailand needs more researchers to improve its competitiveness in science and innovation, particularly in S-curve industries. He also stressed the need for the country to enhance its research infrastructure, funding, and collaboration network. TSRI has allocated 19.3 billion baht for R&D across 195 agencies and institutions for fiscal 2025. Of this, 8 billion baht is meant for human development, with 2.5 billion baht specifically aimed at promoting young researchers. Currently, Thailand has 250,000 researchers, which is 24 for every 10,000 people. However, their 2027 target is to have 42 researchers per 10,000 people, or around 420,000 researchers. This requires an investment of approximately 30 billion baht. The country also hopes to raise its highly skilled workers from 3.95 million to 15.2 million by 2027, while also increasing global-leading researchers from 14,000 to 38,000. TSRI Vice-President, Nirawat Thammajak, recognizes that by 2027, Thailand will require 160,000 annual science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduates, an increase from the current 110,000. The semiconductor sector has been identified as strategic, and geopolitical tensions between the US and China are causing a shift of semiconductor plants to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Thailand could potentially provide 100,000 skilled workers to the industry, as it already has 88,880 workers in related fields. Plans are also underway to propose a workforce development strategy for future semiconductor industry needs. Nirawat also highlighted the need for social scientists and environmental researchers to tackle the country’s challenges, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary work among researchers. Currently, Thailand has 100 leading social science researchers and an additional 1,000 social scientists. The Muay Thai fighter, Thananchai Sit Song Phi Nong, has detailed a horrifying experience on a Qatar Airways flight from Greece to Qatar where he and other passengers were stuck for three hours amid a fire in the aircraft. Thananchai was in Patras, Greece, attending the IFMA World Muaythai Championships. Following the tournament, Thananchai and 48 Thai boxers, their team members, and athletes from various nations, boarded Qatar Airways flight QR204 from Athens to Doha. Once the passengers were seated, the plane's air conditioning and engine suddenly stopped functioning. Despite three attempts, the pilot was unable to restart the engine. For around three hours, the cabin crew and airline team strived to resolve the problem without giving out much information. Passengers were kept on board until a few of them started bleeding from their noses, and others had to resort to emergency oxygen. The situation caused panic among children on board. As the distress intensified, the passengers demanded to be allowed to disembark, which the crew finally agreed to. From the airport, a foreign woman filmed a video clearly showing grey smoke billowing from the aircraft's rear. Firefighting personnel attempted to extinguish the fire, unbeknownst to those on board. This video was shared among passengers, sparking concerns regarding the safety procedures adopted by the airline. In an interview with ThaiRath on June 11, Thananchai expressed his disbelief at the events. "I feel lucky to have survived. Inside the aircraft, it was extremely hot. When I saw the video and all the smoke, I realized why. I was there for three hours, sweating profusely and feeling suffocated," he said. While some passengers and their family members have mentioned the incident on the airline's official Facebook page, no official clarification has been provided by the airline. Thananchai competed in the championship against Constantine Shakhtarin of Russia, where he lost by a 27-30 score. The Thai boxing team clinched six gold, two silver, and four bronze medals overall. In an almost Biblical tale, a 59 year old Thai man in the Isaan province of Surin came back from the dead. A medical team managed to administer CPR to bring the dead man back to life. Remarkably, the modern-day Lazarus refused further treatment, climbed out of the ambulance and ran more than 3 kilometres back home. A 33 year old rescuer from the Sawang Arom Rescue Foundation, Worrasethtakorn Sakdasakunkunakorn, revealed that his team was assigned to transport the dead body of a 59 year old Thai man, Prueang Enmak, from his home in the Prasat district of Surin to the Prasat Hospital. When the rescue team arrived at the dead man’s home, Prueang’s family members were making an unsuccessful CPR attempt to save his life. Rescuers came to their assistance, performing CPR on Prueang for 20 minutes until he came back to life. However, Prueang was confused when he came around and did not speak to anyone. The rescue team decided to take Prueang to Prasat Hospital for further examination. Rescuers stopped at Ban Thanong School to transfer Prueang to the hospital. Unexpectedly, Prueang woke up, took off the intravenous line on his hand, and fled from the ambulance. Some nurses reportedly suffered minor injuries during Prueang’s escape. The rescue team drove their emergency van after Prueang and asked him to stop but he grabbed a wooden stick as a weapon and told the officers to stay away from him. Prueang continued running for over 3 kilometres until he arrived at his home. Family members managed to calm him down and took him inside the house safely. Prueang’s 57 year old wife, Sombat Enmak, recounted the moments before her husband’s death in an interview with Channel 7. She said that Prueang had drunk two to three bottles of beer and then took a shower. Sombat became suspicious when Prueang spent too long in the shower and decided to check on him, only to find him lying unconscious on the bathroom floor. She discovered that Prueang was not breathing and sought help from Prasat Hospital and the rescue team before the aforementioned incident occurred. Sombat added that a similar incident occurred four to five years ago. Prueang stopped breathing for one night before reviving. Prueang told her about his near-death experience, revealing that he had a chance to enjoy a Thai traditional dance and came back to life after the performance ended. Prueang told the media that he felt exhausted after the long run. He did not know how he could run that far. At that time, his only thoughts were only to go home, not to a hospital. Immigration officers in Krabi detained two Burmese nationals for illegally operating a kebab shop at Ao Nang Beach. The pair were caught in the act and failed to produce valid work permits or passports when asked by authorities. Head of Immigration Division 6, Police Major General Songprod Sirisukha led a team to conduct a series of inspections in an operation aimed at curbing illegal activities by foreign nationals. Special emphasis was placed on those taking jobs that could be filled by Thai citizens or engaging in unlawful business practices. The team, joined by officers from the Koh Phi Phi Police Station, conducted thorough checks on residences, shops, restaurants, and other establishments where foreign nationals are known to work. At a specific kebab shop located in a small alley leading to Ao Nang Beach in Krabi Province, the officers found two Myanmar nationals actively selling kebabs to customers. Upon requesting their passports and work permits, the duo failed to present any documents. This led to their immediate arrest on charges of being foreign nationals residing and working in the Kingdom without permission and engaging in work beyond the allowed scope. Authorities emphasised the importance of investigating and arresting offenders under the Immigration Act of 1979, the Decree on the Management of Foreign Workers of 2017, and the Foreign Business Act of 1999. Since mid-May, Krabi Immigration has apprehended 27 individuals for violating the Immigration Act and six for breaching the Decree on the Management of Foreign Workers. The influx of tourists in Krabi has necessitated heightened vigilance and regular checks by immigration officials to ensure the safety and security of all. Krabi Immigration urges the public to report any suspected illegal activities. The ongoing efforts are designed to foster a secure and welcoming environment for both locals and tourists, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their time in the region without concerns about safety or legality, reported Khaosod. A 13 year old Thai girl remains in critical condition in an intensive care unit after being challenged to drink alcohol to win 1,000 baht at an ordination ceremony at a temple in the Isaan province of Nakhon Ratchasima. The girl’s grandmother, 72 year old Aui, filed a complaint against a Thai man who tricked her granddaughter, A, into drinking an excessive amount of alcohol for cash at Nong Boon Mak Police Station yesterday, June 10. A lost consciousness immediately after drinking the booze and was rushed to Nong Boon Mak Hospital after the incident. Her condition was severe, prompting the hospital to transfer her to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital for better treatment and medical equipment. A’s relative submitted a video of the incident to the police as evidence. The video showed A and a 13 year old boy drinking alcohol from bottles while a group of Thai men gathered and cheered them on. Aui revealed to the police and Channel 7 that A took part in an ordination ceremony alongside her friends at a temple near her residence on June 9, the day of the incident. She explained that A typically attended such ceremonies to gather money scattered by monks. Aui expressed this necessity due to her challenging circumstances: she lives with 13 family members, including elderly individuals, children under 16, and disabled persons, all relying on her for support. Suspects remain at large Aui learned from witnesses that a Thai man, featured in the video, challenged A and her friend to drink half a bottle of alcohol for 1,000 baht, and A agreed. A lost consciousness and collapsed immediately after finishing the bottle. The boy who drank with her was fine, despite being heavily drunk after the challenge. The boy’s mother urged the man who issued the challenge and his friends involved in the incident to take responsibility for both children. An investigating officer reported they would summon everyone in the video to the police station for questioning. The charges and punishment depend on the severity of A’s condition. They would be initially charged under the Child Protection Act including: Section 26(5): forcing, threatening, inducing, encouraging, or allowing children to behave inappropriately or perform obscene acts. Section 26(6): hiring or inviting children to work or perform actions that may be harmful to the body or mind. Section 26(10) selling trading, giving alcohol or cigarettes to children. The penalty will be imprisonment of up to three months, a fine of up to 30,000 baht, or both. They also face a penalty of up to three years, a fine of up to 6,000 baht, or both for putting the girl in a critical condition. They would also face more penalties if the girl died.
