81 year old Thai man loses 22 million baht to police impersonator Photo via DailyNews An 81 year old Thai man lost life savings worth 22 million baht to a scammer who impersonated a police officer and accused the victim of being involved in illegal businesses. Full Story https://aseannow.com/topic/1329404-81-year-old-thai-man-loses-22-million-baht-to-police-impersonator/ -
An 81 year old Thai man lost life savings worth 22 million baht to a scammer who impersonated a police officer and accused the victim of being involved in illegal businesses. The 81 year old victim, Praisan, a former leader of the business planning team at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), sought help from his son, who works in the stock market in Singapore, regarding the accusation of his involvement in illegal businesses. Paisan’s son listened to his father’s issue and concluded that he was not involved in any illegal operation but fell victim to a call centre scam. Paisan revealed in an interview with Channel 7 that he received a call from a scammer claiming to be an officer from Ayutthaya Provincial Police. The police impersonator told him that his bank account was involved in illegal businesses and must be investigated. To prove his innocence, the police impersonator ordered Paisan to transfer over 19 million baht to a police bank account for further investigation. The fake police officer told Paisan to follow instructions sent via the Line application instead of visiting the police station. The scammer said he would take care of his case online for Paisan’s convenience, as it would be difficult for a person of his age to travel to Ayutthaya. Fake cop’s actions The scammer did not stop at 19 million baht. The fake police officer continued to trick Paisan into transferring more money, saying he had to place 2.2 million baht as a guarantee to get the initial amount he transferred back. Paisan, who had run out of money, pawned his house for 3 million baht and transferred the amount to the scammer. The police impersonator asked Paisan to pay more but he ran out of money and sought help from his son. Paisan revealed to the media that he could not sleep or eat since the incident. The stress almost drove him to take his own life. He hoped the police would help him retrieve his home and money. Paisan’s son told the media that he was angry at the scammer and wished the scammers would have pity on people and stop scamming them. He said honest people who worked hard their whole lives to save money should not be victims of these scammers. The son also left a message for the Bank of Thailand and relevant authorities to take call centre scams seriously. He said authorities and each bank could use technology to track down the scammers’ accounts or suspend suspicious customer transfers. Man arrested for online BB gun scam in Thailand Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Police apprehended a man for selling BB guns online, deceiving customers into transferring money, and then blocking them on Facebook to avoid contact. The arrested individual claimed to only take orders, not handle deliveries. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1329403-man-arrested-for-online-bb-gun-scam-in-thailand/ -
Police apprehended a man for selling BB guns online, deceiving customers into transferring money, and then blocking them on Facebook to avoid contact. The arrested individual claimed to only take orders, not handle deliveries. Today, June 9, Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengsawang, along with a team including Police Major General Nopasilp Poolsawat and Police Major General Teeradej Thammasuthee, arrested 53 year old Nuttanan (surname withheld) based on a warrant issued by Khon Kaen Provincial Court (warrant number 65/2020, dated March 31, 2020). The charges included fraud and importing false computer data likely to cause damage. The arrest occurred in front of a house in Don Yai Hom, Nakhon Pathom, on June 8. The case began when, on June 4, 2018, the victim reported the incident to Police Lieutenant Colonel Boonsuan Laojum at Khon Kaen City Police Station. The victim, Kittiphat, discovered a Facebook post by Nuttanan advertising BB guns for sale. Believing the offer, Kittiphat agreed to purchase a BB gun for 7,000 baht (US$190), transferring the amount to Nuttanan’s account. More than 20 days passed without receiving the product. Initially, Kittiphat could contact Nuttanan, but on June 23, Nuttanan blocked him on Facebook, making further communication impossible. This led Kittiphat to file a complaint at Khon Kaen City Police Station, demanding the prosecution of Nuttanan. During interrogation, Nuttanan admitted to previously selling BB guns. He conducted business with acquaintances and confirmed receiving 7,000 baht in his account. Nuttanan claimed ignorance about whether his business partner actually delivered the goods to customers, reported KhaoSod. He stated that his role was only to take orders, while another person handled deliveries. Following the confession, police transferred Nuttanan to Khon Kaen City Police Station for legal proceedings, Nuttanan confessed that he was only responsible for taking orders. “I did not handle the deliveries. Someone else did.” By Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-10 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Used car dealer suspiciously found dead, foul play suspected Image courtesy of Khaosod A prominent used car dealer was found dead with his right hand propping up his chin, sparking foul play suspicions from his wife. A prominent used car dealer was found dead with his right hand propping up his chin, sparking foul play suspicions from his wife. Two men, believed to be loan sharks, were seen leaving the scene before his death. Police Lieutenant Thanin Kanpai from Mueang Nakhon Phanom Police Station yesterday received a report of a suicide at a well-known car dealership located along the Nakhon Phanom-Tha Uthen road. The police coordinated with medical professionals from Nakhon Phanom Hospital, forensic experts, investigative officers, and emergency response teams from Sawangnava That Phanom and VR Lamkhong Friendship Rescue Units. The incident occurred in a two-story concrete building. In front of the building, five to six cars were parked for sale. On the ground floor, near the staircase leading to the second floor, the body of 52 year old Nattawut was found hanging from the stair railing with his right hand under his chin. A car wheel was found at his feet. An inspection revealed no signs of struggle or theft. A white Toyota Vios, belonging to the deceased, was parked in front of the dealership with its front facing outwards. Nattawut’s 45 year old wife reported that before the incident, her husband mentioned he would go inside the building to sort out some documents. She called and messaged him around 3pm, receiving normal responses. However, when she tried to contact him later in the evening, he did not answer her calls. Concerned, she asked a neighbour to drive over and check. The neighbour found the lights in front of the house and the dealership dimmed. Using a flashlight, the neighbour searched the bathroom but found nothing. Eventually, they discovered the used car dealer’s body hanging from the stair railing. The wife stated that her husband was a cheerful person with many friends and did not seem to be under any stress that would lead him to end his life. She mentioned that two men, believed to be loan sharks, had entered the building before the neighbour found her husband. She suspects there may be foul play involved, possibly indicating that someone killed him and staged the scene to look like a suicide. The police discovered that the security cameras installed at the scene were not functioning. They plan to inspect other security cameras along the road and in nearby homes to gather clues and determine the cause of death, reported Khaosod. Spitting mad: Russian tourist’s traffic light tantrum in Phuket The suspect's lawyer and Thai female victim. | Photo via Facebook/ Phuket Times A Russian man spat on a Thai woman and tried to slap her at Wat Naka Intersection in Phuket on May 29 in anger over a traffic light misunderstanding. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1329401-spitting-mad-russian-tourist’s-traffic-light-tantrum-in-phuket/ -
A Russian man spat on a Thai woman and tried to slap her at Wat Naka Intersection in Phuket on May 29 in anger over a traffic light misunderstanding. The 46 year old Thai woman, Phatchareeya Rattanatorrakarn, accompanied by her husband, Boonyong Burirak, filed a complaint against the Russian at Vichit Police Station at 2pm on May 29. Phatchareeya said the foreign man spat on her and tried to assault her. Phatchareeya recounted the incident to the police, saying Boonyong was driving along Chao Fah Tawan Tok Road and stopped at a traffic light in the right lane at the Wat Naka Intersection. While waiting, a sedan behind them repeatedly honked its horn. The sedan driver honked long and loudly before moving to another lane on the right of Phatchareeya’s car to park next to her. The sedan driver lowered the car window, allowing Phatchareeya to see that he was a foreigner. The foreign man then knocked on Phatchareeya’s window, asking her to open it and speak with him. As soon as she did, he reached into her car and attempted to slap her, but she managed to avoid the assault. He then insulted her with vulgarities before speeding away. Phatchareeya was confident that she had neither annoyed the foreign driver nor broken any traffic laws. She suspected that he might have misunderstood the traffic light. Russian apologises Phatchareeya’s lane was for vehicles turning right and had to wait for a separate traffic light. The man may have thought he could drive straight into the lane and become angry with her and her husband for stopping even if the traffic light was green. However, that light was only for vehicles going straight on the other lanes. Phatchareeya’s husband chased after the foreigner but could not stop him in time. They visited a nearby petrol station to clean her face, which was dirty with the foreign man’s saliva, before filing the complaint. Police officers identified the foreigner as a Russian man but were unable to summon him because he had already returned to his home country. The foreign man sent his lawyer to the police station to acknowledge the charges. The lawyer issued an apology on behalf of his Russian client and the suspect apologised to the victim via video conference. He said he would travel to Thailand in September to receive punishment. The man faces two charges, including: Section 295 of the Criminal Law: physically assaulting. The punishment is imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both. Section 393 of the Criminal Law: insulting, humiliating, or causing damage to another person. The penalty is imprisonment of up to one month, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both. Search continues for American missing at Nai Harn Beach Police in Phuket are intensifying their search for an American who went missing after being swept away by waves at Nai Harn Beach. Strong winds and high waves are hindering rescue efforts, with lifeguards raising red flags to warn against swimming. His wife, 49 year old Siriaamorn Petchraawut, hopes for a miracle. The 49 year old American father, James Everett du Bois, and his three year old son went missing at Nai Harn Beach in Rawai, Phuket. Lifeguards were able to rescue the boy but du Bois was pulled into the waters by a strong rip current and is still missing. Phuket Kusoldharm Foundation’s diving team searched the waters but had to halt the operation due to rough sea conditions. By 8.30pm, the dive team ceased their search for safety reasons, given the strong waves and winds making underwater search operations perilous. Reporters on the scene observed that Rawai Municipality had established a special search centre at Nai Harn Beach. Multiple agencies are now involved in the search for James along the coastline. Lifeguards continue to place red flags along the beach to warn against swimming, as the turbulent sea conditions persist, posing significant challenges to the search efforts. Siriaamorn recounted the incident, stating that they arrived at the beach at 4pm. It was a usual Sunday activity for the family. However, the waves seemed particularly strong that day. Dangerous conditions Du Bois had taken his son into the water first. Siriaamorn tested the water herself and found it normal at first, noting that many children were playing nearby. Initially, the beach was marked with yellow and red flags, but these were later changed to red flags, indicating dangerous conditions. She described how James, being tall, took their son further out to play despite the deteriorating weather. Siriaamorn noticed the change in the water conditions and decided to bring them back to shore. Upon her realisation that her husband and son had gone missing, she attempted to locate him within the crowd of tourists. But like a needle in a haystack, she was unable to find him who had gone missing in just five minutes. However, lifeguards were able to rescue their son. Siriaamorn hopes for a miracle to locate the boy’s father, stating that he is a family man who left his job to be with his family in Phuket, reported Khaosod. The family’s routine Sunday outing turned into a tragic and desperate search, with hopes pinned on the possibility of James being found alive. The search efforts continue but the challenging sea conditions make the situation increasingly dire. The incident has drawn attention to the dangers present at beaches during rough weather, emphasising the importance of heeding safety warnings and flag signals. On June 5th, authorities in the Banglamung district cracked down on an unauthorized store selling kratom beverages. The action followed complaints from local residents worried about the potential dangers these drinks could pose to young people. Upon reaching the shop, officials discovered teens selling the drinks. The officers confiscated a substantial amount of kratom leaves and over 150 bottles of the prepared juice. The store owners, whose identities have not been released, are being charged under Section 6 of the Food Act for unlicensed sale of food containing kratom. Although Kratom was decriminalized in 2022, it requires a license from the Thai FDA to be legally sold, specifically when mixed into beverages. Elderly man 20 million baht in debt after employer’s deception Image courtesy of Khaosod An elderly man faces destitution after being deceived by his employer, leading to a debt of 20 million baht and the seizure of his elderly pension, leaving him with no money for food. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1329222-elderly-man-20-million-baht-in-debt-after-employer’s-deception/ -
An elderly man faces destitution after being deceived by his employer, leading to a debt of 20 million baht and the seizure of his elderly pension, leaving him with no money for food. A member of the local administrative organisation, 46 year old Phongchai reported that a local had been entangled in a bankruptcy case, resulting in a debt of over 20 million baht. The man in question, 63 year old Boonyuen Jumlee from Chachoengsao province, revealed that his monthly elderly pension of 600 baht, which he has been receiving for the past three years from the Tha Takiap local administrative organisation, has been accumulating in his Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) account, totalling more than 20,000 baht. However, the funds were inaccessible due to an asset freeze by a legal order from the enforcement office following the bankruptcy case. Boonyuen explained that he received a summons for a central bankruptcy case at the end of May, involving himself and the Revenue Department. This follows the asset protection announcement. He expressed his distress, saying he is severely stressed and physically unwell, suffering from back pain and swollen legs, making it difficult to walk. Seeking advice from Phongchai, he lamented that he and his wife were on the brink of starvation, with no rice to cook, hoping only to get his rightful pension to buy food. Boonyuen recounted taking up construction work in Chanthaburi province over a decade ago. He agreed to put his name forward as a contractor, only to find himself wrongly indebted to the Revenue Department for over 20 million baht. Documents were submitted to relevant agencies, including the enforcement office in Chachoengsao, but there has since been no progress. Boonyuen pleaded for help, stating that he is now forced to skip meals and is physically unwell. He can no longer find work due to his condition. He resignedly remarked that if he must face imprisonment, so be it, but for now, he just needs enough money for food and basic sustenance, reported Khaosod. A Good Samaritan reached out to help a poor Thai man in the Samut Prakarn province near Bangkok after he was scammed out of 10,000 baht by his supposed fiancée. A Danish investor living in Pattaya read the sad story about a Thai security guard paying his girlfriend 300 baht a day in instalments, only to be abandoned, on The Thaiger website. The 47 year old security guard, Pichate “Ched” Khamchom, sought help from several news agencies after losing his hard-earned money to his girlfriend. Ched met his alleged fiancée on a dating app. The unscrupulous woman convinced him to pay her 300 baht a day in instalments to save as a dowry and their wedding. Despite earning only 500 baht a day, the father of one was determined to make it work, hoping to build a life together. Tragically, his girlfriend then disappeared after he paid over 10,000 baht, leaving him heartbroken and financially embarrassed. Ched’s story deeply moved Casper, a 38 year old Danish investor residing in Pattaya. Upon reading about Ched’s predicament on The Thaiger platform, Casper contacted the team, expressing his willingness to reimburse the 10,000 baht that Ched had lost. Initially, Ched was cautious about accepting the money, fearing another scam. However, after reassurance from The Thaiger that the Danish philanthropist was genuine and sincere, Ched provided his bank details. To his surprise and delight, Casper transferred 15,000 baht, 5,000 baht more than his initial offer. When asked about his generous act, Casper admitted the story pulled on his heartstrings. “A hard worker who tried to follow his heart and got crushed like that shouldn’t lose hope. I always appreciate this. I put myself in a position to help others since I also come from a hard-working family, so I try to do this as often as I can.” Casper revealed that he is involved in multiple industries based in Pattaya. He mentioned that he has been living in Thailand for seven years and considers it his home. He expressed his desire to support the Thai people as much as possible. An overwhelmed Ched expressed deep gratitude to Casper. “I initially thought The Thaiger and Casper came from some scamming gang and attempted to get my bank account information to swindle my money. But I really got the money. I am very happy and appreciate the help. At least, I’m not facing only a bad thing. There is still something good waiting for me.” Casper also offered Ched some comforting words of encouragement. “Be careful. Don’t give up, one day you will meet someone.” The Thaiger team feels blessed to be part of this heartwarming story and to have the opportunity to connect with Thai and foreign communities in Thailand. We wish Ched all the best in finding the love he deserves and extend a wholehearted special thank you to Casper. A Baby's Body Found in a Plastic Bag at a Bus Stop in Phitsanulok. File photo for reference only A baby's body was found inside a plastic bag near a bus stop in Phitsanulok, Thailand. A baby's body was found inside a plastic bag near a bus stop in Phitsanulok, Thailand. This discovery has led to an inquiry into whether the cause of the baby's death was a premature birth or intentional abortion. At 5 pm yesterday, police in Phitsanulok City were notified about the body by investigator Min Misinth. After receiving the notification, medical rescue personnel and a doctor from Naresuan University Hospital were rushed to the scene located at the entrance of Maesuri Rest Stop. About 200m away from the bus stop, the body was found hidden in the grass in a white 30cm plastic bag, partially opened to reveal the baby's head. Authorities identified the body as a male infant, between six and seven months of development. Initial indications suggest the baby might have died from a premature birth or through abortion. The discovery was made by Phet Sornthavee, while he was spraying weed killer near the bus stop. He saw the bag and then noticed what seemed to be a baby’s body. Quickly, he alerted the nearby shopkeepers to contact the police. A cleaner at the bus stop named Lek Atthitham, 55, informed that four buses had arrived almost at the same time the night before. While on her cleaning duties, Lek spotted a teenage girl in a white bloody shirt washing her shirt. Even though the teenager stated it was period blood and didn't seem troubled, Lek remained suspicious after the infant’s body was discovered. She didn't know if the girl was connected to the child but sure that the girl had come on one of the buses. The police hypothesize that the teenager aboard one of the buses could have unexpectedly gone into labor, unaware of her pregnancy, or might have had an unintentional early birth. She might have panicked and left the baby’s body near the bus stop in a plastic bag. For more investigation, the baby's body will be sent to Naresuan University Hospital's forensic department to determine the exact cause of death. The police are also trying to locate the mother for additional information. Phitsanulok police are conducting a thorough investigation to put together a sequence of events before the discovery of the infant's body. They are also appealing to the public for any information that can possibly identify the mother or anyone involved in this tragic incident. Wild mushroom harvesting begins at Khon Kaen Zoo, providing economic support File photo for reference only Khon Kaen Zoo has given local residents permission to forage for wild mushrooms in the Khao Suan Kwang area. This scheme aims to boost the local economy through direct sales to tourists and providing for family needs. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1329219-wild-mushroom-harvesting-begins-at-khon-kaen-zoo-providing-economic-support/ -
Khon Kaen Zoo has given local residents permission to forage for wild mushrooms in the Khao Suan Kwang area. This scheme aims to boost the local economy through direct sales to tourists and providing for family needs. This year’s early rainy season has led to increased rainfall over the Khao Suan Kwang mountain area. This extra rain has resulted in lush surroundings and stimulated the growth of various types of mushrooms. The Zoo's Acting Director, Tipawadee Kittikun, said that this season's mushroom proliferation is particularly noticeable. In line with an agreement set up on April 27, 2009, the zoo plans to utilize the area sustainably, alongside the local community forest. This strategy includes partners such as the Departments of Forestry and National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the Khon Kaen Province, and the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand. The plan intends to help the local economy through tourism, and by providing jobs and educational resources about the environment and wildlife. Every rainy season, locals from Khao Suan Kwang and nearby areas gather various types of wild mushrooms. They sell these at the entrance of the zoo, creating income for both the community and individual families. Some of the mushrooms are used for home meals. According to Tipawadee, last year, these sales, primarily from the puffball mushrooms, totaled 1.6 million baht. Khon Kaen Zoo has also established rules for mushroom collectors and others wishing to gather other forest items. This includes registering at the main entrance, operating within specific hours, and refraining from entering animal exhibits. Any violations, such as hunting, tree cutting, or damaging zoo property, will be met with legal action. By giving permission to forage in the Khao Suan Kwang area, Khon Kaen Zoo supports the locals and helps strengthen their bond with the natural environment.
