  2. A former lawyer tragically died in his luxurious home in the heart of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The police are intensively investigating the cause and conducting a thorough autopsy to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. Police Major Thanatorn Phanchoo, investigator at the Nakhon Si Thammarat City Police Station, received a report of a death at a residence in Khlang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, at 7am today. Accompanied by an investigation team, forensic officers, an on-duty doctor from Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital, and rescue volunteers from Pracharuamjai Foundation, they promptly arrived at the scene. The deceased, identified as Chongkon, a 66 year old former prominent lawyer in Nakhon Si Thammarat, was found sitting in a wooden chair inside his luxury home. He had a gunshot wound from a 9mm firearm, which entered his right temple and exited through the left. A 9mm gun was found nearby and taken as evidence by the police. Investigations revealed that Chongkon lived with his wife, while their only child worked in Bangkok. Chongkon had been suffering from terminal cancer, which had taken a severe toll on his physical and mental health. On the day of the incident, Chongkon had woken up and sat in the wooden chair, instructing his wife to go to the market. While his wife was preparing to leave, she heard a single gunshot. Rushing to the scene, she found him already dead, a source close to the family mentioned. “He had been under a lot of stress due to his illness.” Cancer battle Chongkon was well-regarded in his community and had many friends. He often hosted gatherings, including a caged bird arena beside his home where friends would meet. The initial assumption by authorities suggests that his ongoing battle with cancer and the stress associated with it might have driven him to take his own life. Police are conducting a detailed autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death, as it was considered unnatural. The body will be handed over to the family for traditional funeral rites once the investigation is complete, reported KhaoSod. The investigation team continues to gather more information and will provide updates as new details emerge. 4. Notorious fugitive Chaowalit Thongduang, also known as "Sia Paeng Nanod", has been caught in Indonesia after a seven-month manhunt. He had escaped from a hospital in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, last October and later engaged in a shootout with the police. Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin confirmed the arrest on Thursday after receiving an update from Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong. Indonesian authorities apprehended Chaowalit in Bali. The Justice Minister has already spoken to Chaowalit through a video call and plans to travel to Indonesia on Friday to facilitate his return to Thailand. It is reported that Chaowalit used a fake passport and pretended to be mute to avoid detection in Indonesia. Minister Tawee quotes Chaowalit admitting feeling cornered during their video call. The minister encouraged Chaowalit to submit to the justice system, promising his safety. Upon his return to Thailand, authorities plan to investigate his suspected ties with a drug gang further. Several women reportedly visited Chaowalit in Indonesia frequently. The details about these women and any money they might have carried remain undisclosed pending police investigations. His arrest came after a dispute with an Indonesian woman, which reportedly resulted in assault. Chaowalit, aged 37, was serving time for attempted murder and faced several other charges, including murder and firearms possession. He escaped from the Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital, where he had been taken for dental treatment, on October 22 last year. He was tracked to a hideout in the Banthad mountain range in Trang on November 8. A gunfight ensued, but he managed to flee. Despite intense efforts to capture him, Chaowalit evaded the authorities. It was later assumed that he fled Thailand by speedboat from Satun. He claimed innocence while on the run, saying he had been unjustly treated. He alleged that he was the only person sentenced for crimes performed by multiple people, and that his bail plea for a pending murder case was managed unfairly. These claims were dismissed by the Ministry of Justice due to his extensive criminal record. On December 25, he was sentenced in absentia by a court to life imprisonment for attempted murder. This case was about a restaurant shooting incident that occurred on September 9, 2019, in Phatthalung's Muang district. He was indicted along with four others for attempting to murder a court assistant. Each was handed a life sentence. 6. The Ministry of Education plans to call for a budget of 15 billion baht to buy electronic devices such as iPads, tablets, and laptops for 600,000 students and teachers next year. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, the Ministry's spokesperson and assistant to the minister, mentioned that the types of devices to be purchased under this scheme have not yet been finalized. They could include any electronic device, such as tablets, iPads, laptops and even Chromebooks. The scheme is aimed at aiding students and teachers, as companies compete to supply their electronic products. The budget request will be submitted for the 2025 fiscal year and the final amount will be decided by the parliament. The initiative's initial phase will start next year, providing 600,000 electronic devices to students and teachers. The Ministry plans to buy these devices on hire purchase which includes the cost of the device, a SIM card, and internet service. The Education Minister, Pol Gen Permpoon Chidchob, highlighted that the provided devices must be practical and accepted universally. Any access to inappropriate and gaming websites will be blocked on these devices. The proposed budget for this notable project is about 15 billion baht, aimed at ushering the education system into a new digital age. However, students will have to return the devices once they complete their education. Siripong stated that initially, the devices will be given to students in grades 10 to 12 in prominent schools for the pilot phase. Other schools will join in the second phase. He asserted that preparing learning content for different platforms is also in progress. This, along with the electronic device, will boost self-study, providing increased flexibility in schools. 8. A Taiwanese boss, referred to as "Mr. Lin", is being detained by the police in Yilan County, northeast Taiwan. He is suspected of possibly being involved in the death of a Thai migrant worker, who was in Taiwan illegally. This news was reported by Taiwan's Liberty Times. The worker, from Thailand, traveled to Taiwan on a vacation visa but ended up working unlawfully in Yilan until his death. The Thai embassy in Taiwan got involved when the man's family in Thailand contacted the Thai police, saying they hadn't heard from him for a while. As a result, the local police in Yilan County found the Thai man's body near a graveyard. Mr. Lin, the deceased's Taiwanese employer, was then brought in for questioning. Initially, Mr. Lin denied knowing about the worker’s death. However, he later admitted that he was aware of his death, according to the English language Taiwanese newspaper. Mr. Lin said that the Thai man was a serious drinker and had been sick the previous week. Instead of seeing a doctor, the Thai man self-medicated with store-bought drugs. On Monday, the man's girlfriend from Thailand found him dead in his room and told Mr. Lin. Fearing prosecution for hiring an illegal worker, Mr. Lin persuaded the girlfriend and two other Thai workers to leave the body near a graveyard. According to Taiwanese media, the police are now trying to find out the real cause of the man’s death. Photo courtesy of Thai PBS -- 2024-05-30 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  10. The city government is encouraging street vendors to sign up for the tax payment program, in efforts to regulate their activity in public spaces and sidewalks. The Governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, stated on Wednesday that only vendors making less than 25,000 baht monthly will be allowed to operate in these areas. Vendors earning more are advised to rent stalls for sales. To implement this policy, it is mandatory for vendors, even those earning below taxable limit, to get registered in the tax payment system. This would enable the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to keep track of their income, as stated by Mr. Chadchart. He also added that the city government has the power to remove vendors from areas if they litter or obstruct pedestrian movement. 12. An exotic pet trainer attacked a South Korean man at a night market in Pattaya, accusing the victim of insulting him by throwing money at him during a performance. The South Korean victim, 38 year old Munsu Park, along with his Thai girlfriend and older brother, filed a complaint at Mueang Pattaya Police Station at 2am today, May 30. The physical assault took place at the Runway night market on Pattaya Sai Song Road. Park pointed out that he had lost teeth and his lips were bruised and bloody from the attack. Park’s girlfriend, May, told police that her boyfriend came to Pattaya for the first time and visited the night market on the seventh day of his trip. At the market, Park became interested in an exotic animal show featuring a python and a Siberian eagle owl and began taking a video. The animal trainer, later identified as Bas, immediately approached Park and demanded he stop filming. Park allegedly did not see the sign indicating that payment was required before filming. A tense confrontation unfolded, during which Park allegedly hurled a 100-baht banknote at Bas, provoking Bas to throw away the money. While Park retrieved his money, Bas delivered two kicks to his face, causing Park to collapse. Blood stained his mouth and his teeth were dislodged. Bas was summoned to the police station for questioning, during which he confessed to the physical assault. He asserted that Park’s action of flinging money at him was insulting, prompting his outburst of violence. He acknowledged his wrongdoing and expressed remorse. The police are yet to determine the charges against Bas, but they intend to investigate whether he possesses legal ownership of the exotic animals featured in his show. 14. A violent altercation between siblings in Chon Buri erupted when a brother stabbed his older sibling 11 times, leaving the latter severely injured. The younger brother claims his brother, in an intoxicated state had instigated the incident, bearing his own weapons. Police Colonel Komsan Kamtunkaew received a report of a stabbing in Sattahip. Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found 54 year old Amnat Pinetr lying in a pool of blood at the back of the house. His body bore more than 11 stab wounds on his torso and back, and he was in severe pain, calling out that his attacker was his brother. The injured man was promptly transported to Somdet Phra Nangchaosirikit Hospital under the Royal Thai Navy for emergency treatment. At the scene, police detained 47 year old Ongart Pinetr who admitted to stabbing his brother. Ongart explained that the altercation ignited when his brother, who was drunk and appeared to be under the influence of drugs, attacked him. He claimed that his brother had a history of violence and often assaulted him, sometimes with the help of others. On this occasion, his brother allegedly came armed with two metal rods and a knife, intending to inflict harm. A brother-in-law present during the incident provided additional context, stating that Ongart had just returned home from work and was about to have dinner when Amnat, intoxicated, arrived and initiated the conflict. The situation quickly escalated, ultimately ending in Amnat being stabbed 11 times. The police have taken Ongart into custody at Plutaluang Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings, planning to question Amnat once his condition stabilises to understand more about the circumstances leading to the altercation, reported Khaosod. As the investigation continues, authorities aim to piece together the events that led to this tragic family conflict. 16. A Thai maid discovered the dead body of a 63 year old American man in his Phuket hotel room after he committed suicide yesterday, May 29. His Thai ex-girlfriend reported that the foreign man suffered from depression but did not seek treatment. Hotel staff reported the death of the 63 year old foreign man, Michael Thomas, to Thalang Police Station officers around 10.40am yesterday. Thomas reportedly took his own life by hanging himself in the hotel room. The maid was the first to find Thomas’ body. The maid and other hotel staff informed police that the American checked into the hotel alone on May 22, paying for his stay daily. However, he did not appear at the counter to pay for his stay as usual on May 28. Staff members noticed a “do not disturb” sign on his door and did not enter his room. Fearing the guest had fled the hotel without payment, the maid decided to enter the room with a spare key at 3pm on that day. However, all of Thomas’ belongings remained. The maid entered Thomas’s room again on the next day, May 29, and found his dead body. Police reported to the Phuket Times that Thomas’s valuables and belongings were untouched. He left a note in his passport asking the hotel and police to contact his Thai ex-girlfriend. According to Khao Phuket, the Thai ex-girlfriend disclosed that she had been in a relationship with Thomas for about two years and four months before they broke up. She said Thomas was an introvert and suffered from depression but did not seek treatment. The Thai woman said Thomas typically stayed in Thailand for three to four months before returning to the US. She contacted Thomas for the last time at 7pm on May 27 and later received an email from him at 8am on May 29, requesting her help with necessary arrangements after his death. Officers reviewed security footage outside Thomas’s room and concluded that the case was a suicide, as no one else had entered the room except for Thomas and the maid. 18. Initially acquitted, an ex-police gunman faces the death penalty for the fatal shooting of a couple in Trang. The couple were buying materials for their rubber latex business at the time, before being violently gunned down. The tragic event occurred on September 9, 2021, in front of the Khuan Mao Cockfighting Stadium in Trang Province. The victims, 39 year old Veerayut Khunin, and 39 year old Woraporn Phian Dee, were shot dead in their Toyota Fortuner. Their 14 year old son was also injured in the attack. The Court of Appeal, Region 9, yesterday delivered its verdict at Trang Provincial Court, sentencing Waritthon Prasitchai and Jirasak Klabkhan to the death penalty. Investigations led by the Deputy Commander of Region 9 Investigation Division, Sakda Charoenkul, alongside the Trang Provincial Investigation Unit and the Central Investigation Bureau, identified and arrested all three suspects involved in the shooting. Deputy Superintendent of Investigation at Ron Phibun Police Station, 48 year old Waritthon was identified as the gunman. A 45 year old Nakhon Si Thammarat village headman, Chamni Chamnanakit, who provided the pickup truck used in the crime, was sentenced to two years in prison. Decision appealed Initially, the lower court had acquitted all the accused on May 16, 2023. However, the victims’ relatives appealed the decision, leading to the current ruling. The judge states that the court considered all evidence presented and finds the accused guilty beyond reasonable doubt. The severity of their actions warrants the death penalty for Waritthon and Jirasak, while Chamni’s involvement, although significant, merits a two-year imprisonment. The case has drawn significant attention, particularly due to Waritthon’s position in law enforcement. The appeal court’s decision underscores the gravity of the crime and the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice. The victims, Veerayut and Woraporn, were well-known in their community for their rubber latex business. Their deaths have left a profound impact on their family and the local community. A family member of the victims believed that justice had been served, hoping that the verdict would bring closure, although believing that no sentence could bring back their loved ones, reported Khaosod. The appeal ruling marks a significant development in a case that has seen multiple twists and turns. The initial acquittal by the Trang Provincial Court had shocked many, given the evidence presented during the trial. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat crime and deliver justice, irrespective of the perpetrators’ status or position. The appeal court’s ruling is a testament to the rigorous legal processes in place to ensure accountability and justice for victims and their families. 20. Villagers in Chai Nat province captured a massive python weighing over 50 kilogrammes after it was found hiding in a grass clump, having just fed. They believe it to be a sacred snake due to its enormous size. Volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, Chai Nat branch, worked together to capture a giant python yesterday, May 28, at Wat Don Pho Si in Huai Krot Pattana sub-district, Sankhaburi district, Chai Nat. The snake was discovered by a monk who was cutting grass around the temple grounds. The python, with an exceptionally large body, appeared to have a swollen belly, indicating it had recently consumed a meal. The python was so full that it could not slither away, making it easier for the volunteers to capture and place it in a sack before releasing it back into the wild. Villagers are convinced it is a sacred snake due to its size. Pakong Thongmee, the village headman of Moo 4, shared that the abbot of Wat Don Pho Si, Phra Kru Photichairangsi (Srinuan Thit Silo), alerted him about the snake. The monk had accidentally disturbed the python while cutting grass, revealing its large body hidden beneath the grass clump. Concerned for the safety of others, the monk requested assistance to capture the snake and release it safely. Upon closer inspection, it was believed that the python had consumed a dog, as it was lying motionless under the grass clump, unable to move. During the capture attempt, the snake lunged at the volunteers, but they managed to loop a noose around its head and bring it to an open area to place it in a sack. The python measured approximately 4 metres in length and weighed over 50 kilogrammes. In his experience of capturing snakes and helping villagers, Pakong stated that this was the largest python he had ever encountered. The temple had never seen a python of this size before. Sacred snake The villagers’ belief in the python being sacred stems from its massive size. Despite their fears, they assured the snake they were capturing it to release it into a forested area, not to harm it, reported KhaoSod. “We were all frightened, but we made sure to tell the snake that we were capturing it to release it and not to kill it,” Pakong said. The python was then released into a forested area where it could continue to live naturally. 24. A staffer at the Cafe Dim Sum Phuket took to social media to warn fellow service workers about a crafty scam that left her out of pocket. The alarming incident occurred on May 23 at the bustling eatery near the iconic Clocktower Circle in Phuket Town. Nong Lin, an employee at the popular restaurant, recounted her experience with a group of diners who executed a clever ruse to evade payment. The group arrived around 11am, enjoyed a swift meal for about 20 minutes, and then made a hasty exit, leaving one woman behind to settle the bill. The woman, appearing flustered and preoccupied with a phone call, requested to pay the bill via a QR code. She scanned the code but, in her rush, failed to confirm the transaction before leaving the premises. By the time the staff realised the payment had not gone through, the group had already vanished. Speaking to reporters on May 27, Nong Lin shared that this was her first encounter with such a scam. Shockingly, she was held responsible for the 285 baht shortfall, deducted from her day’s wages. Her online post about the incident quickly went viral, attracting significant attention and sparking heated discussions among locals. The management of Cafe Dim Sum Phuket is now reviewing its payment procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future, reported Phuket News. Meanwhile, Nong Lin’s cautionary tale serves as a stark reminder to all service staff to double-check mobile payments before allowing customers to leave.
