Yesterday, a man's body was found in the parking lot of a Bangkok market, leading to panic among locals. The police are investigating odd aspects related to his death, including injuries that don't match with how his body was positioned when discovered. Police officer, Thananchai Kanthahatthi, from Rat Burana Police Station received a report about the deceased man at 8am. He Immediately reported this to his superiors and arranged for forensic doctors from Siriraj Hospital and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation to examine the scene. The body was identified as Banchaa, a 42-year-old man from the Suwannaphum District, Roi Et Province. He was found lying on his side in the middle of the parking lot. Banchaa had injuries consisting of a 5-cm cut near his nose, a 1-cm wound below his left eye, and a 10-cm cut on his left elbow. All injuries seem to have been caused by a sharp object. Other signs of bruising were also present on his face and body. Officer Thananchai suggested that Banchaa had been dead for at least 12 hours. The cause of death remains unknown as the inflicted wounds don't match with how the body was positioned, thereby raising suspicions. Banchaa's body has been sent to Siriraj Hospital for an autopsy. The strange death of Banchaa has put market vendors and locals in a state of shock. Countless are demanding a comprehensive investigation to unveil the truth behind Banchaa's untimely death. The police are now looking into the CCTV footage from the area and interviewing potential witnesses to establish what might have happened in Banchaa's final moments. This is the second case of similar nature in the area this year, hence safety concerns are escalating among locals and market customers. Officer Thananchai is encouraging the public to provide any information helpful for the investigation. "We are devoted to solving this case and securing the safety of the community. We invite anyone with relevant information to approach Rat Burana Police Station." Officer Thananchai said. A major accident involving a heavy-duty truck being driven by a fatigued driver happened on a highway near Pattaya yesterday morning. This tragic incident resulted in two deaths and several injuries. The accident occurred around 8.40 am in the Nong Pla Lai area, Banglamung district, Chon Buri province, on the Pattaya-bound Highway 7. Emergency responders from Sawang Boriboon were the first to arrive at the scene. They found that the heavy-duty truck, which was carrying cement sheets, had crashed into a roadside shop. The truck's driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road, hitting a pickup truck, two motorbikes, two power poles and then the shop. The accident created widespread destruction with debris scattered all over. Five injured people were promptly given medical assistance. Emergency responders had to pull out the trapped driver from the wrecked truck. All the injured victims were then taken to Banglamung Hospital for additional medical treatment. One woman among the injured was severely hurt, with her two legs reportedly crushed by the truck. Sadly, two women died in the accident, a 25-year-old named Sirinthorn Muangton and a 17-year-old girl, whose name has not been revealed due to her age. Both victims were employees in the shop and were standing in front of the shop on their motorbike when the truck hit, tragically killing them. The driver of the heavy-duty truck, a 50-year-old man named Rung Saengkhamchu, confessed to falling asleep while driving due to inadequate sleep. He only suffered minor injuries and expressed his deep regret for the tragic accident. Police are further investigating the accident to ascertain its exact cause and are set to charge Rung for his careless behavior which led to this devastating incident. Phuket Envisions Surge in Visits from Vietnamese Tourists File photo for reference only Tourism businesses in Phuket, are expecting an increased number of visitors from Vietnam following a major advertising campaign conducted in Vietnam's two biggest cities. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1328471-phuket-envisions-surge-in-visits-from-vietnamese-tourists/ -
Tourism businesses in Phuket, are expecting an increased number of visitors from Vietnam following a major advertising campaign conducted in Vietnam's two biggest cities. The president of the Phuket Tourist Association, Thanet Tantipiriyakit, revealed that the island hopes to attract at least 120,000 Vietnamese tourists this year, a significant 50% more than last year's 80,000. Recent promotional activities on May 21 in Ho Chi Minh City and May 23 in Hanoi are predicted to contribute to this increase. Out of around one million Vietnamese who visited Thailand last year, only a small 8% travelled to Phuket. However, this year, businesses are hoping to increase this figure to at least 12%. The launch of direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Phuket is expected to help achieve this goal. A representative from the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Ho Chi Minh City office, Supakan Yodchun, noted that tourists from southern Vietnam have high spending power and are attracted by the extensive facilities offered by Phuket. He said, "Phuket appeals to all – from individual tourists and families to those attending meetings or seminars." Despite a decline by 5.4% in the number of tourists from Vietnam visiting Thailand between January to April this year (290,000 visitors compared to the same timeframe last year), tourism businesses in Phuket remain optimistic. They are hopeful that targeted marketing efforts and improved accessibility to the island will reverse the trend and make Phuket a favorite destination for Vietnamese travelers. In Pathum Thani, a delivery rider who was overwhelmed by jealousy viciously attacked his girlfriend with a knife. The brutal attack left severe injuries on his girlfriend and she was trapped inside a rented room. She managed to alert her neighbours with her cries of help, and they contacted her son. He came to her rescue, rushing her to the hospital, and her life was saved in the nick of time. Pisit Chongcharuwong, the Deputy investigator of Pak Klong Rangsit Police Station in Pathum Thani, received a report of a stabbing incident in a rented room in Mueang Pathum Thani district at about 8:30pm yesterday. On receiving the distress call, the police, along with forensic investigators and volunteers of Ruamkatanyu Foundation, hurriedly reached the scene of the crime. This place was a complex of rented rooms. In one of these rooms, Suksan, a 48-year-old woman, was found wounded from multiple knife stabbings. She had injuries on her right chest, right breast, right arm, and right leg. Due to the critical nature of her wounds, she was rushed to the Krung Siam St. Carlos Hospital. There was clear evidence of a confrontation in the room, with property scattered and destroyed, and a broken knife smeared with blood was found. Somdee, a 64-year-old neighbour, mentioned hearing cries of help from Suksan. She couldn't gain entry into the locked room and so went to fetch other neighbours for assistance. Continuing her efforts, she found the victim's son playing snooker nearby. After explaining the situation to him, they returned to the scene. The son broke down the door and found his mother lying in a pool of blood, severely injured. The attacker, Suksan's boyfriend, who has been in a relationship with her for about five to six months, had vanished from the place of the crime. The couple is known to bicker frequently, with the boyfriend having constant suspicions despite Suksan's friendly disposition. Video surveillance showed that the attacker drove away after the stabbing incident. Police are now actively searching for him for further questioning and potential legal follow-up, according to a report from Khaosod. This incident underscores the serious threat of domestic violence, and emphasizes the key role that alert neighbours and prompt actions can make in saving someone's life. Yesterday, at 5pm, on Suksawat Road in Phra Samut Chedi, Samut Prakan, a group of first-year vocational college students suffered a knife attack while on their way home. Six teenagers assaulted the students, injuring two of them. The local police, led by Lieutenant Sunthorn Pimphan of Phra Samut Chedi Police Station, were notified about the attack. Teams of officers, investigators, and rescuers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation arrived at the scene promptly. One of the victims was a 15-year-old male student studying electrics at the vocational college. He had a severe knife wound on his back. The rescue team gave him initial first aid before taking him to the hospital. The second injured student, a 16-year-old, had a head injury. Friends had already taken him to the hospital. The attackers escaped on their motorcycles and are still at large, despite police efforts to capture them. Witnesses say that the student victims were on three motorcycles with five people in total. The attackers, who were also on three motorcycles, each carrying two people, chased and provoked them. The attackers were each carrying a sword or machete. When the students fell off their bikes, the attackers caught up with them and injured them. The remaining students managed to escape. A friend of the injured students said that they were riding home from school when they noticed the teenagers chasing them with weapons. They all tried to escape in different directions, and only later did they realize one of their friends was injured. The victims stated that they had no feuds or issues with any people or groups and were baffled by the attack. The authorities are now checking CCTV footage to identify and arrest the suspects involved in the attack. Wissanu to advise Cabinet on legal matters, no political role Photo courtesy of The Nation Seasoned legal expert and former Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam is poised to become an adviser to the Secretariat of the Cabinet, assisting with the government’s legal affairs. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1328465-wissanu-to-advise-cabinet-on-legal-matters-no-political-role/ -
Seasoned legal expert and former Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam is poised to become an adviser to the Secretariat of the Cabinet, assisting with the government’s legal affairs. Wissanu confirmed yesterday that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin would appoint him to the position. He mentioned that the secretariat had previously approached him for the role following his departure as deputy prime minister after the end of Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government last year. Upon learning of this, PM Srettha expressed his intention to make the appointment official. “I’ve already discussed the matter with officials from the Cabinet’s secretariat. They said they would revamp the working system and documentation process. They said they would ask me to become an adviser.” This new role is not a political office and does not come with a salary. The 72 year old Wissanu added that he is not required to submit a declaration of assets and liabilities to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), unlike other political officeholders. He clarified that this position is distinct from that of an adviser to the prime minister. When questioned about whether this appointment might lead to him becoming a deputy prime minister again under the Pheu Thai Party-led government, Wissanu firmly denied any intention to take up a political office. The former deputy PM also disclosed that he met the Thai prime minister for discussions on various topics last Saturday, including the 62 year old’s recent visits to France and Italy and a petition submitted by 40 senators against Srettha over the appointment of Pichit Chuenban as PM’s Office Minister. Wissanu refuted claims that his new role would involve defending Srettha in court concerning the case. Srettha’s ethics scandal Last Thursday, the Constitutional Court accepted a petition seeking PM Srettha’s removal over the appointment of Pichit, whose eligibility is in question. The judges instructed Srettha to explain within 15 days but decided not to suspend him as prime minister pending the ruling. Previously, the 40 caretaker senators had asked the Constitutional Court whether the Bangkok-born PM and Pichit should be removed from office under Section 170 (4) and (5) of the charter, which addresses the ethics of Cabinet ministers. Following the 2014 coup, Wissanu was appointed deputy prime minister in charge of legal affairs under the previous administration. He also served as deputy prime minister under Thaksin Shinawatra from 2002 to 2006 and as the Cabinet’s secretary from 1993 to 2002. The Thai premier mentioned yesterday that a prime minister’s order for Wissanu’s appointment is being prepared. “I already met him for talks on the matter.” When asked if the decision to hire Wissanu indicates a shortage of legal experts in the administration, PM Srettha responded that the government believes it is necessary to enlist more capable individuals to support its work and better serve the public. Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul welcomed Wissanu’s appointment, noting that his legal expertise will significantly benefit the government. Move Forward Party (MFP) list-MP Parit Wacharasindhu commented yesterday that the Pheu Thai-led government resorted to seeking assistance from a former Cabinet minister of the previous government due to a lack of better options, reported Bangkok Post. Parit, who chairs the House Committee on Political Development, Mass Communication, and Public Participation, remarked that it remains unclear whether Wissanu’s appointment is aimed at helping the Thai PM in court or genuinely supporting the government’s work as claimed by the prime minister. Former Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra postponed his court hearing on allegedly violating Section 112 of the Criminal Law, also known as the lese majeste law, scheduled for today, citing a Covid-19 infection. The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) rescheduled the hearing for June 18. The 74 year old former politician was accused of violating Section 112 during an interview with South Korean reporters in Seoul on May 21, 2015. Additionally, Thaksin was accused of importing information into a computer system that could defame, insult, or show malice towards the Thai royal family. The former PM denied all allegations and requested a further investigation into the case. The AGO investigated the accusations further and agreed to indict Thaksin. The court appointed the next hearing for today, May 29. Thaksin urged his lawyer to submit a request to postpone the hearing yesterday, May 28, claiming he was suffering from Covid. The document also included medical confirmation of the infection from the hospital. AGO Chief Prosecutor Wiphut Boonprasart revealed in a press conference at 9am today that Thaksin requested the AGO to postpone the hearing until June 25 but the AGO decided to reschedule it to June 18 because the doctor suggested Thaksin rest for observation until June 3 only. Thaksin’s lawyer, Winyan Chartmontri, revealed in an interview with BangkokBiz News today that Thaksin is ready to go through the justice proceedings and prove his innocence and his intentions when talking about the royal family of Thailand in the interview. Winyan emphasised that Thaksin is now suffering from Covid and might have been exposed to it when he met many residents in the Isaan province of Nakhon Ratchasima on May 25. Winyan insisted that the illness was unexpected. He added that Thaksin had a fever of 38 degrees Celsius and a sore throat yesterday. Winyan said he talked with Thaksin via phone and found the former PM had a hoarse voice. Winyan stated that he could not confirm whether Thaksin would be able to appear on June 18 or not. If he does, the first thing he will do is submit a bail request. By Petch Petpailin Photo via ThaiRath Source: The Thaiger 2024-05-29 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

An abbot fled a well-known Phan Suek Nukun Temple in the Isaan province of Nakhon Ratchasima when officers from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP) raided the temple and found wild animal carcasses hidden in his accommodation. DNP officers received a tip-off from a monk at the temple that the abbot, later identified as Kittichai Worradhammo, hunted wild animals and kept their carcasses in his living quarters. The monk and other temple members reported that the abbot liked to eat wild animals, and they could no longer tolerate his behaviour, prompting them to report it to the DNP. Acting on the tip-off, officers raided the temple on May 18 and found the hidden carcasses in a fridge inside the abbot’s accommodation. Officers discovered the carcasses of an Asian black bear, a barking deer, a bull’s head, a serow, and four bear paws. Kittichai managed to escape from the temple shortly before the investigation. DNP officers filed a complaint against the abbot at Klangdong Police Station. Police will conduct a further investigation into other involved monks, hunters, and the abbot’s followers. According to Buddhist doctrine, the prohibition on killing stands as a fundamental precept that monks, nuns, novices, and lay members are encouraged to follow. Buddhist monks are required to observe 227 precepts, a cornerstone of which Kittichai violated. Kittichai is not the first monk to engage in wild animal hunting and consumption. In April, two monks and two novices were accused of hunting wild animals in the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary in the Isaan province of Chaiyaphum. The five monks and novices were accused of participating in a hunting expedition and entering the sanctuary specifically for this purpose. However, all the accused priests denied the charges, insisting that they did not bring any weapons into the forest. They admitted to bringing some animal carcasses out of the forest but claimed it was to perform a merit-making ceremony for the animals’ souls. A tragic incident occurred yesterday when a woman took her own life in response to ongoing stress and abuse from her drug-addicted grandson. Police officers and rescue workers were called to a home in Chiang Phin 2 village, Udon Thani, where they found the lifeless body of 64 year old Prayoon Onnoi. Prayoon’s 68 year old husband, Somkid Phosarn, explained that his wife had been acting unusually in the past few days, often asking to accompany him to his job as a security guard. When he returned home that morning, he tried to console her, telling her that they were in this together and to share any worries she had. Despite his efforts, she remained silent. “I felt something was wrong because she never followed me to work before. When I came home and found her, I was in shock.” Prayoon had hanged herself. The police found no signs of foul play or struggle, and her family did not suspect any foul play. The body was handed over to the family for traditional funeral rites. The primary cause of stress for Prayoon, according to Somkid, was her grandson, who had developed a severe addiction to methamphetamines and kratom. The grandson would demand money daily, asking for 200 baht to 300 baht (US$5 to (US$8) to fund his drug habit. If Prayoon refused, he would become violent, often damaging household items and leaving the family in debt by having to borrow money to appease him. “My wife was under immense pressure every day. Our grandson would ask for money and, if she didn’t give it to him, he would hurt her. I felt so helpless.” Thanuwat Yamongkol, the village headman, confirmed that the family had been dealing with the grandson’s addiction for some time. Prayoon was particularly affected, as she was home all day without any work, while Somkid was away at his job. Thanuwat said he often received reports from neighbours about the grandson’s abusive behaviour, reported KhaoSod. “She would often complain about her exhaustion and frustration with her grandson. She didn’t know how to handle the situation anymore.” The grandson was not home at the time of Prayoon’s death, having left to consume drugs with friends. Thanuwat mentioned that the pressure and inability to find a solution to the daily financial demands likely led Prayoon to take her own life. Police raided a snooker club-cum-pub near Buriram Provincial School, uncovering a drug-fueled party in a VIP room. Nine individuals, including three women and six men, were arrested, and various drugs and firearms were confiscated. Police Major General Rutthaphon Naowarat, commander of Buriram Provincial Police, yesterday, May 28, led a team comprising the provincial police investigation unit, the Mueang police investigation team, and administrative officials to raid the Double Nine Snooker Club on Romburi Road in Nai Mueang Sub-district, Mueang District, Buriram Province. This establishment is situated adjacent to Buriram Provincial School. Inside the club, police found a main hall with two snooker tables and four VIP rooms. Upon searching these rooms, one was discovered to be the venue of a drug party. Nine individuals were present, three women and six men, all of whom attempted to flee but were promptly apprehended by the officers. Various drugs, including ketamine and a new type of drug mixed with drinking water, were discovered in the room. Urine tests on all nine individuals revealed the presence of drugs, turning their samples purple. Additionally, a 9mm handgun with ten rounds of ammunition was found. Upon further investigation, a black Toyota Fortuner with the license plate number งฉ 7327 from Nakhon Ratchasima was found parked outside the pub. This vehicle belonged to 51 year old Nawapol, one of the nine individuals in the drug party room and the owner of the confiscated firearm. Nawapol admitted to being the owner of all the drugs found in the VIP room, reported KhaoSod. Neung, a 24 year old man among the nine arrested said he had arranged to have a drug party since the morning, chatting and consuming drugs and drinks. “It was enjoyable as the VIP room featured smoke, lights, and sound, making it feel like we were in heaven. When someone knocked on the door, we thought more friends were joining, but to our shock, it was the police.” Pol. Maj. Gen. Rutthaphon mentioned that the establishment had a license under the name Lahan Sai Residents Association. The discovered drugs traced back to Phetchaburi Province were particularly concerning due to their liquid form, which could indicate modifications or increased potency. The police plan to conduct an in-depth investigation to trace the origin of these drugs. Well-known Thai singer Ammy the Bottom Blues, birth name Chaiyamon Kaewwibunphan, has been given a four-year prison sentence for burning a portrait of the King of Thailand in 2021. Chaiyamon's charges include the violation of three laws, among them the lèse-majesté law which forbids insult or defacement of the Thai monarchy. A fellow activist, Thanapat Kapeng, was also charged along with Ammy. On May 27, a decision by the Criminal Court concluded that both Chaiyamon and Thanapat violated sections 112 and 217 of the Criminal Code and section 14 of the Computer Crimes Act. Section 112, also known as the lèse-majesté law, and section 217, which forbids damaging another's property, were the laws allegedly violated. They likewise violated section 14 of the Computer Crimes Act, which prohibits sharing inappropriate content online. The two activists were found guilty of violating these laws by burning the king's portrait during a political rally in 2021 outside Klong Prem Prison. The court interpreted this action as an intentional insult to the king. By sharing pictures of the incident on Facebook, Chaiyamon caused a risk to national security, the court stated. Thanapat received a two-year prison sentence, whilst Chaiyamon was sentenced to serve four years. Their lawyers have since requested bail, the Nation Thailand reported. Simultaneously, according to the group Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, 272 individuals have been charged under the lèse-majesté law in 303 cases between November 24, 2020 and May 10 this year. Among those charged is MP Chonticha Jaengraew from the opposing Move Forward Party, which garnered the majority of seats and 38% of the primary vote in last year's elections, but was not allowed to form a government. Chonticha was recently sentenced to two years in prison for violating section 112 and at this point, she has been released on bail.
