  1. A dramatic police chase unfolded when a 25 year old man, high on drugs, stole a pickup truck and a minibus, fleeing across provinces for 120 kilometres before being apprehended in Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat, claiming he was escaping from people trying to kill him. The incident began last night, May 27, when police from Choknasan Police Station in the Surin province, along with officers from various stations in Buriram and rescue units, pursued the suspect. The man initially stole a pickup truck from the Khukhan district in Sisaket province, fleeing through the Prasat district in Surin. Running out of fuel, he abandoned the pickup and stole a minibus. He then stopped to refuel at a petrol station in Ban Tani, paying only 100 baht for 500 baht worth of fuel before speeding away. Police from Choknasan coordinated with officers in Prakhon Chai, Nang Rong, and Nong Ki, anticipating the suspect’s route. Rescue units and good Samaritans also joined the chase, which saw the suspect breaking through multiple police checkpoints. Surrendered without resistance Rescue units from Ban Song Mueng streamed the chase live, capturing the suspect’s escape until he reached Nong Bunnak district in Nakhon Ratchasima. Here, local police successfully stopped the vehicle, and the suspect surrendered without resistance after a 120-kilometre pursuit. The suspect was identified as 25 year old Thotsaphon, a resident of Ban Na in Kantharalak, Sisaket province. During initial questioning at Nong Bunnak Police Station, Thotsaphon claimed he stole the vehicles to escape people trying to kill him, intending to reach his sister in Bangkok. He alleged that his parents and siblings had been murdered and buried in a pond in Sisaket, and he feared for his life. However, police were sceptical of his claims, as a urine test revealed the presence of drugs. They suspected he was hallucinating due to drug use. Panya Thanompong, a truck owner who helped in the pursuit, recounted hearing the commotion at the petrol station in Ban Tani, where the suspect sped off after refuelling. Panya decided to follow and alerted the Choknasan police. Despite their efforts and coordination with Ban Song Muang rescue units, the suspect managed to evade capture until reaching Nong Bunnak. Collaborative effort The head of the Ban Song Mueang rescue unit Chayanan Phuttichat explained that their team was called in to assist in the chase. Familiar with working alongside police, they used their rescue vehicle to follow the suspect. Despite breaking through multiple checkpoints, the suspect was eventually cornered and detained in Nong Bunnak. Upon inspecting the stolen minibus, authorities found 2,000 baht in cash under the driver’s seat, though it was unclear if it belonged to the vehicle’s owner. The money was seized for investigation. Thotsaphon was taken back to Choknasan Police Station and other relevant jurisdictions for further legal proceedings. The police plan to continue their investigation to verify his claims and address the drug-related offences, reported Khaosod. 3. The body of a young woman was found dead in a river after her motorcycle was discovered parked on a bridge. The tragic suspected suicide incident unfolded yesterday at 9am when the Sajja Phutthatham Kabinburi Rescue Unit received a report from locals noticing a girl on the municipal bridge in Kabinburi. Shortly after, only her motorcycle and a pair of sandals were found on the bridge, raising immediate concerns. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities inspected the blue Honda motorcycle with Prachinburi registration plates. Inside the vehicle, they discovered an identification card belonging to a 23 year old woman, Arada, along with her patient ID from the Neurological Institute and a pair of sandals. Despite a thorough search around the bridge, Arada was not immediately found, prompting the rescue team to initiate a water search. A 50 year old resident, Vinai, reported seeing a girl sitting on the bridge railing, holding a phone, before she suddenly disappeared, leaving behind her bike and sandals. This observation led the rescue team to focus their search efforts on the water. After approximately 40 minutes of searching, the divers from the Sajja Phutthatham Foundation located Arada’s body about 50 metres from the bridge. Her body was retrieved and brought to shore, where it awaited further examination by the police to determine the exact cause of death. Arada, also known as Ice, was the daughter of Kritsada Wongdeelert, a former doctor at Kabinburi Hospital and a graduate of Chulalongkorn University. Kritsada had passed away due to a bloodstream infection contracted while treating patients. Tragically, Arada’s mother also died in an accident, leaving Arada to be cared for by her 88 year old grandmother, Boonnak. Ice’s life was fraught with challenges from a young age. She suffered from epilepsy, and her grandmother, who was of limited means, raised her by collecting recyclable materials. This led to their story being picked up by reporters, which subsequently garnered attention and support from Kritsada’s former medical colleagues and the public. Donations were made, and Ice received treatment for her epilepsy, eventually overcoming the condition. However, she continued to struggle with depression, said Vinai. “Seeing her on the bridge that morning, I didn’t think anything was seriously wrong until she disappeared.” The police are continuing their investigation to uncover more details surrounding Arada’s death, while the community mourns the loss of a young woman who endured so much hardship in her life. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health support and the profound impact of loss and trauma on individuals. During a meeting in Samphanthawong district, Chadchart outlined his vision for transforming the neighborhoods along the canals in the Rattanakosin area, including Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem and Khlong Ong Ang, among others. Chadchart recently engaged with business operators and residents in Talat Noi, Yaowarat, and Phahurat areas to gauge interest in more frequent road closures during weekends to boost commercial activities. The Bangkok governor also proposed converting certain roads into pedestrian zones and turning them into street food and dining areas. These changes aim to replicate the success seen in the Song Wat area, where local collaboration led to substantial neighborhood revitalization with support from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). The Samphanthawong District Office is now in the process of collecting feedback from local businesses and residents to formulate a development action plan by the end of the year. 10. The Department of Disease Control (DDC) is ramping up its bird flu watch following reports of human infections in the United States. Dr Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, the Head of the DDC, said on Sunday that recent cases of the H5N1 bird flu in the US show the importance of careful monitoring. This is especially true since these cases came from cows. The first case in the US was found in Texas on April 1, with a second one in Michigan on May 22. However, Dr Thongchai reassured that Thailand has a low risk of similar outbreaks because it doesn't import dairy cows from the US. He highlighted that the country's last major bird flu outbreak was in 2004. Since then, strong monitoring systems involving several departments have been in place. The DDC is also working with US health authorities to track bird flu infections in animals and people. They are increasing their surveillance by checking international passengers for flu-like symptoms and planning meetings with conservation groups to strengthen their public health defenses. Dr Apichart Vachirapan, the deputy head of the DDC, reminded everyone that although Thailand hasn't had any bird flu cases for years, it's still important to stay cautious. He said people should avoid touching sick or dead birds, clean their hands after touching animals, and ensure that poultry and eggs are thoroughly cooked. He also emphasized the need to immediately report any unusual bird and poultry deaths to livestock authorities. File photo for reference only. 14. Thanya Buri's provincial court handed a two-year prison sentence to the Move Forward Party's Member of Parliament, Chonthicha Jangrew, for defaming the royalty, as it falls within Section 112 of the Criminal Code. Initially, her sentence was three years, but the court shortened it to two years. However, they dismissed another charge against Chonthicha, accusing her of violating the emergency decree about public gatherings. These charges came after a protest on September 11, 2021, where Chonthicha and nine other activists demanded the release of political prisoners in front of the Thanya Buri court in the Pathum Thani district. Following the sentencing, Chonthicha secured her bail, permitting her to challenge the verdict in the Appeal Court, as shared by Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. Throughout this process, she will keep her position as a Member of Parliament. Chaithawat Tulathon, the leader of the Move Forward Party, expressed his hope for Chonthicha's bail approval if she got found guilty. Chonthicha is one among the three MPs from the leading opposition party charged with royal defamation. In December 2023, Rukchanok Srinork, a Member of Parliament from Bangkok, received a six-year prison sentence for royal defamation and cybercrime due to online comments made from July 18 to August 9, 2021. On similar lines, another Member of Parliament from Bangkok, Piyarat "Toto" Jongthep, faces three charges under the same section for his participation as a leader of the WeVo guards during 2020 and 2021's anti-government protests, as reported by the Bangkok Post. Currently, Rukchanok is out of prison on bail, waiting for his appeal. Photo courtesy of The Thaiger -- 2024-05-27 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  16. A woman, who 12 years ago borrowed 10,000 baht for her child's school fees, is now grappling with a massive 2.6 million baht debt due to interest. The lady acquired the loan from a loan shark for her child's education and has been paying an outrageous 10% daily interest rate for more than 10 years. When she's unable to make the daily interest payments, the amount is added to the principal, escalating the debt. Even though she has been regularly paying, the principal amount has surged to 280,000 baht, her daughter claimed. The woman has sought help from a popular Facebook page, "Survive - Sai Mai Must Survive," to address this issue. Even though she signed up for a debt relief program, she has not received any meaningful help. Fearful of possible reprisals that echo violent incidents in news reports, she is hesitant to bring up the matter with the district office. The family has also been dissuaded from seeking legal help due to threats from the loan shark. They tried reaching out to the police, but the loan shark physically confronted them, demanding immediate repayment of the 280,000 baht principal. This led them to seek guidance from the "Survive - Sai Mai Must Survive" Facebook page. In response to their call for help, the Facebook page's administrators reached out to Police Colonel Parinya Thongma of the Pratunam Chulalongkorn Police Station, asking him to promptly look into the issue. The administrators have asked the police to bring the loan shark for talks in a bid to secure a refund for the huge amount the mother has paid over the years. The aspiration is to stop the mother's sustained payments and possibly get back some of the steep interest paid. While the situation's outcome is unsure, the case highlights the harmful effect of illegal money lending practices on individuals and families. The story emphasizes the necessity of pursuing legal assistance in harsh financial scenarios. The role of social media platforms in bringing such problems to the forefront illustrates a rising trend of digital communities rallying to support those in need. File photo for reference only. Yesterday at 2pm, the funeral for Nong took place at Wat Pai Prawan in the Thung Maha Charoen area of Wang Nam Yen District. The teenager was a Mathayom 4 (Grade 10) student at Wang Phrai Wittayakhom School. The mother of Nong, tearfully expressed her grief, calling for accountability and support from relevant authorities. She voiced her concern about the lack of registration and expired insurance of the school bus, which had lapsed by ten days. She urged the provincial governor to address these issues, highlighting the difficulty of seeking justice as an ordinary citizen. “We have lost our child, and while various agencies have provided assistance, we need to know where to direct our grievances so that our child did not die in vain.” Wang Phrai Witthayakhom School’s principal, Wanna Phithaksongkhram, provided an update on the injured students. Five students remain hospitalised, with four at Somdej Phra Yupparaj Sa Kaeo Hospital and one at Khlong Hat Hospital. 22. A Thai woman came forward to seek justice accusing a police officer from Naduang Police Station in the Isaan province of Loei of demanding free alcohol from her while asking inappropriate questions about her sex life with her foreign husband. The 41 year old Thai woman, Jareeporn Wannachoo, revealed to Channel 7 that the officer from Naduang Police Station, Police Captain Prateep Sittichak, called her at about 11.30am on May 23, stating that the police needed her help and support. When he arrived at her house, he asked for alcohol instead of discussing police matters. He entered her home and insisted on being served hard liquor, not beer. Jareeporn complied with Prateep’s request and waited to discuss the police matter that Prateep told her. Nevertheless, Prateep began asking inappropriate questions about sex. He made inquiries about the frequency of her sex activities, her husband’s ability to perform sexual activities due to an illness, and the size of his private parts. Jareeporn asked Prateep to leave but he ignored her request and continued drinking until he was drunk. He later fell asleep in a police pickup truck outside Naduang Police Station. Prateep defended himself during the interview with Amarin TV that the incident was a misunderstanding. He visited Jareeporn’s house due to concerns about drug addicts in the area and admitted to asking for alcohol, claiming she had offered support in the past. He also alleged she frequently gave him money for patrolling her neighbourhood. After several media outlets spread Jareeporn’s story, the superintendent of Naduag Police Station, Piti Pimphumee, came forward to respond to the issue. He promised to provide justice to both parties and would set up a special committee to investigate the matter. Piti promised a fair investigation and has temporarily relocated Prateep to the Loei Provincial Police pending further investigation. 23. New speed cameras on Lamphun-Lampang route spark debate Image courtesy of This is Lamphun Facebook page New speed cameras on the Lamphun-Lampang route sparked a widespread online debate. 24. New speed cameras on the Lamphun-Lampang route sparked a widespread online debate. The cameras, installed along the descent from Doi Khun Tan, feature 8K resolution and enforce speed limits ranging from 50 to 90 kilometres per hour, depending on the specific location. Following a post by the Facebook page This is Lamphun which shared images of the new speed cameras and highlighted the enforced speed limits, the public response was swift and intense. “Driving up and down the mountain is already tricky. Why don’t you have the police drive here and show us how it’s done?” The post has gathered over 2,100 comments, many criticising the government’s approach, with users expressing anger on the snail-like 50-kilometre-an-hour speed limit. The installation of these high-resolution cameras follows an increasing trend in Thailand to enhance road safety through technology. The authorities aim to reduce accidents on this particular stretch of road, known for its challenging terrain and frequent accidents. Difficult roads Many drivers, however, feel that the new measures are overly restrictive. They argue that the speed limits do not account for the practicalities of driving on a mountainous road, where maintaining a constant speed is difficult. This sentiment is echoed in numerous comments questioning the practicality and effectiveness of such stringent speed enforcement. Despite the backlash, some individuals support the initiative, arguing that safety should be the priority. A supporter commented. This perspective highlights the ongoing tension between road safety measures and the perceived inconvenience they may cause. The debate also touches on broader issues of trust in governmental decisions and the balance between regulation and individual freedom. Many critics feel that the government sometimes implements measures without fully considering their impact on daily life. The introduction of these speed cameras is seen by some as another example of such top-down decision-making. In addition to the public debate, there is also a call for more transparency and engagement from the authorities. Residents and frequent travellers on the Lamphun-Lampang route are urging the government to provide clearer explanations and perhaps even consider adjustments based on public feedback, reported Khaosod. Road safety concerns The controversy surrounding the new speed cameras is a reflection of the broader challenges faced in implementing road safety measures in areas with difficult driving conditions. While the intent to reduce accidents is widely acknowledged, the methods and their execution remain points of contention. Balancing safety with practical driving conditions will be key to addressing the concerns raised by critics and supporters of the new speed cameras. Ultimately, the goal remains to ensure that roads are safe for all users while also respecting the practical realities faced by drivers. The ongoing debate highlights the complexities involved in achieving this balance and the importance of open dialogue between the government and the public.
