  2. In the province of Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, a unique mushroom frenzy has gripped local residents. Armed with everyday spoons and ladles, they're invading the forests on a diligent hunt for the elusive hed phor, a local delicacy often referred to as the false earthstar or barometer earthstar. This spiky mushroom famed for its unique texture and distinctive flavour can command up to 500 baht per kilogramme in the market, creating a mushroom rush akin to the 19th-century gold rush. Following continuous rainfall, Makha Hill in Ban Nong Bot, situated in Khok Krasian, has become a hotspot for these mushroom gatherers due to the sudden proliferation of hed phor. The mushrooms, virtually the size of a thumb, stay concealed under the soil, only the patches of cracked earth revealing their presence. Using spoons or ladles, the bounty hunters swiftly dig up the concealed fungi, often discovering clusters in one location. According to one local, Nok Banhanbut, the demand for these mushrooms in the community greatly outweighs the supply, even with the high price tag. Despite the potential for profit, residents often choose to keep their harvest, savouring the infrequent opportunity to enjoy the distinct and delicious taste of hed phor in their meals. This year, they enjoy a particularly fruitful season, making every trip to the forests worthwhile. Hed phor can add a unique kick to an array of traditional dishes, from soups and curries to spicy salads like larb and various stir-fried dishes. With its rich and crumbly texture and the rarity of its appearance, the hed phor mushroom adds a touch of luxury to the communal table, making it a truly sought-after delicacy amongst food enthusiasts. As the mushroom fever continues to spread across the province, the spoons and ladles of Nakhon Ratchasima show no signs of resting. File photo for reference only. 4. Intense rainfall and stormy weather have whipped across Nakhon Ratchasima, sparking major concerns among local Thai rice farmers as vast tracts of their fields lay submerged under floodwaters. Days of unrelenting downpours have swamped agricultural lands, interrupting the growth of just-sprouting seedlings and casting a cloud over the future prosperity of these agrarian communities. Ken Tethaisong, a 76-year-old farmer from Sarai Subdistrict of the Chum Phuang District, described the wake of the storm, recounting a distressing sunrise scene of his six-rai (2.4 acres) rice field, entirely marooned. "I set up a water pump to drain my field as swiftly as possible," shared the understandably anxious Ken, whose freshly sown crop lies under water's heavy grasp. These adverse meteorological events have not only marred Ken's efforts, but they've also taken a toll on numerous farmers across multiple districts in Nakhon Ratchasima. Forced to mount a defensive against nature's sudden onslaught, these farmers are scrambling to install water pumps, battling to rescue their vulnerable young rice plants from further damage. There's a herculean effort underway, with farmers striving to ward off the repercussions of these deluges. Tided together through adversity, agricultural communities are praying for a ceasefire from the stormy skies to protect their livelihoods. The recent weather disruption has foregrounded the susceptibility of these communities to climatic variation - hanging a question mark over their ability to weather such catastrophes without expedient support. As another affected farmer put it, their hope lays locked in the promise of fairer weather. However, hope alone won't dilute the strain of their situation - many fear not only for their immediate crop survival, but also for the longer-term impact on soil health and future yields. Their resilience may well be the silver lining here, with communities coming together to address this crisis head-on. High on the authorities' radar, the current scenario is under strict surveillance, and the promise of assistance stays ready, should the adverse weather persist. A poignant moment in this continuous joust between humans and nature, it's a stark reminder of our entwined fate on this shared planet. File photo for reference only. 6. Thailand's Khlong San district law enforcement woke to a particularly pressing task yesterday, when they apprehended six people posing as delivery riders. The individual's arrest is suspected to be the tip of an iceberg indicating a deeper drug racket. This landmark seizure took place in the Wat Thong Phleng community of the Khlong Ton Sai subdistrict. The Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB), in cooperation with Bangkok’s Narcotics Control Office and the Royal Thai Police’s Welfare of Women and Children Subdivision (WWCS), led the operation that saw an alarming amount of drugs confiscated. These quantities comprised 6.95 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 100,000 methamphetamine pills, 78.3 grams of heroin, and 22.38 kilograms of ketamine. Further, in a vivid illustration of the perils of criminal life, a 9mm firearm, ammunition, and motorcycles were also discovered at the crime scene. All these described as "indispensable tools of their dark trade" by the Deputy Commissioner Thinnakorn Rangmat. The arrested crew had meticulously created a façade of being mobile delivery service riders, transporting the contrabands on their two-wheelers cunningly concealed amidst innocuous parcels. A couple of unnumbered motorcycles further aroused police suspicion, leading to the ground-breaking discovery and arrests. Having cracked under police investigation, all perpetrators confessed their roles, revealing they'd been trafficking drugs for at least five months. They evidently received dope from fellow dealers fortnightly or sometimes even three times monthly. They allegedly pocketed a whopping 80,000 baht for each scandalous delivery. Deputy Commissioner Thinnakorn, underlining the discovery's significance, fervently reminded the citizens, "Your alertness can help us defeat these narcotics scourges from our peaceful communities faster." A clear call for community partnership in curbing such menaces was emphasised by Thai authorities. File photo for reference only. 8. A group of teenagers who were stealing clothes and belt buckles from fellow youths, and then showcasing their acts on Facebook, were arrested by police. The arrest happened after an investigation by Bang Phli Police Station, which had taken place around 9:30pm the previous day. The police traced the gang to a house in the Bang Pla area of the Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province. They had received tips that a group of young people were intimidating Cambodian teenagers with knives and robbing them. The victims of the incidents, aged 15 and 17, reported the gang to the Bang Phli police on May 20. As a result, two gang members, aged 16 and 17, were found in an apartment by police. The police discovered two school shirts and a belt buckle that matched the victims' descriptions, along with two makeshift firearms. The police subsequently arrested two more gang members, a 17-year old teenager and a 20-year old named Tanakorn. According to the Superintendent of Bang Phli Police Station, Police Colonel Phairoj Phetphloi, the gang would ride motorcycles and approach the Cambodian teenagers on Sansuk Road in the Bang Chalong area of the Bang Phli District, and rob them using machetes. Phairoj stated that after the robbery, the suspects would quickly escape. They would then boast about their actions on Facebook by posting pictures of the stolen goods. This allowed the police to obtain a warrant to search and detain the suspects. The suspects have since confessed to their actions. They have been charged with armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms, and the use of vehicles in the commission of a crime. They will be further interrogated by professionals from various fields as part of the legal process. File photo for reference only. 10. Today, a homeless man was found dead on the side of a road close to a luxury house. He had been using a plastic sheet to protect himself from rain but ended up suffocating. The incident happened around 4.30 a.m. on Ngam Wong Wan Road in Bang Khen, Nontha Buri. The police and forensic doctors attended the scene. The man, identified as 42-year-old Boonyuen, was discovered lying with a clear plastic sheet wrapped around him. He was dressed in a red t-shirt and blue pants, however, he wasn't wearing any shoes. Next to him was a small cart which he used for collecting recyclables to earn a living. Initial investigations indicate that he'd been dead for at least five hours before being found. No evidence of physical assault was found. It's suspected that he suffocated after using a mask and the plastic sheet to protect himself from the rain. Local residents mentioned that Boonyuen was a common sight in the area, pushing his cart and collecting recyclables. He had often been reported to the police for sleeping outdoors in front of people's houses, which resulted in police being called to move him, a local officer shared. Boonyuen had chosen to sleep across from a large house in the alley and had covered himself with the plastic sheet to stay dry during the rain. Tragically, the heavy rain made the sheet stick to his body tightly, cutting off his air supply unbeknownst to him. This sad event brings attention to the hardships faced by the homeless, often forced to look for makeshift shelters in very harsh conditions. The lack of a secure sleeping place and the need to keep changing locations due to complaints can lead to unsafe situations, as shown in this case. Officials have urged the public to show empathy towards the homeless and to help them through the right channels instead of merely making them move. Boonyuen's body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science for a detailed examination. The police are still investigating to confirm the exact cause of death. File photo for reference only. Kaewphet reported the loss to Bang Yi Khan Police Station yesterday, stating she misplaced gold necklaces and gold bars near a pedestrian bridge outside a Lotus's supermarket in the Bangkok Noi district. She explained that she was carrying the valuable items in her tote bag, which included her purse, ID card, along with the gold, and it went missing during a motorcycle taxi ride. Initial suspicions of theft were raised against Kaewphet. However, after examining security camera footage, officials confirmed that she did drop her bag at the specified spot. They have yet to identify who took it. Chaiyaporn Jariyadham, the owner of the gold shop in Phetchaburi, provided further information about the situation. Having operated the shop for nearly 30 years and having known Kaewphet for more than 10 years, he expressed confidence in her, mentioning she has worked at a Bangkok gold shop for over 25 years without any issue. Despite the incident, Jariyadham stated he saw no suspicious behavior in Kaewphet. He asked her if there were any personal financial issues that could have led her to steal the gold, to which she denied. Jariyadham is now offering a reward of 100,000 baht for the return of the lost gold. Photo courtesy of The Thaiger -- 2024-05-24 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  14. A Thai woman dressed in Dhamma retreat attire yesterday physically assaulted and verbally abused police after being arrested for drink driving in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. The 52 year old woman, Onsurat, filed a complaint with Pak Kret Police Station officers at around 8am yesterday, May 23, after a drunk driver, later identified as 36 year old Pitchada, drove against traffic, causing Onsurat to swerve and crash into the footpath. Officers arrived at the scene and found Onsurat’s damaged Toyota Fortuner SUV on the footpath with the right wheel detached. Pitchada’s Haval electric SUV was located nearby. According to the police, Onsurat was hiding from Pitchada, who was behaving erratically and attempting to attack her. Police officers arrested Pitchada, prompting her to assault officers by grabbing their collars and hurling insults. Officers immediately perform an alcohol test and found 102 milligrammes percent of alcohol in Pitchada’s system. She was taken to the police station for further legal proceedings on drink driving charges. Onsurat was also invited to the police station for questioning. At the station, Pitchada attempted to kick Onsurat but officers intervened. Pitchada then pleaded for release, claiming she had just returned from a Buddhist retreat and needed to rest. Police had to temporarily detain her due to her unruly behaviour. Channel 3 reported that police charged Pitchada under Section 378 of the Criminal Law: putting herself in a state of drunkenness by consuming of alcoholic beverage or other intoxicant substance, and causing troubles in public places. The penalty is a fine of up to 5,000 baht. The victim, Onsurat, expressed her distress and disappointment in an interview with Channel 8. “I am very sad, not because of the injury or the damage, but because of the bad luck. I always make merit, help people in difficulties, and have never taken advantage of anyone. I had never experienced any accident in life.” Onsurat added in the interview that Pitchada’s boyfriend was a good person Pitchada. He protected her from assault and tried his best to control his girlfriend. 16. A heavily intoxicated man driving under the influence of marijuana crashed his car into a power pole and refused to leave the vehicle, instead choosing to cuddle with his dog and cat while smiling at officers. The incident occurred yesterday at approximately 10.46pm in Soi Wat Boon Sumpan 9, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri Province. Police from Nong Prue Police Station and rescue volunteers from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Pattaya responded to the scene. They found a Suzuki Ciaz which had veered off the road and collided with a high-voltage power pole. The car sustained significant damage, but the driver, a 27 year old Hong Kong national, appeared unfazed by the accident. He remained inside the vehicle, hugging his dog and cat, seemingly in a state of blissful slumber. Efforts by officers and residents to rouse the driver were unsuccessful. After about 20 minutes, they resorted to the laborious task of dragging him out of the car. Throughout the ordeal, the man continued to smile serenely, as if unaware of the gravity of the situation. A friend of the driver, 23 year old Patipan, recounted that the Hong Kong man had been smoking marijuana with friends. Once he was heavily under the influence, he attempted to drive back to his accommodation. However, due to his inebriated state, he parked the car haphazardly, obstructing local residences. Patipan, concerned for his friend’s safety, followed him and tried to persuade him to move the vehicle, as it was causing inconvenience to the residents. The Hong Kong man reluctantly resumed driving but declined Patipan’s offer to accompany him. This decision ultimately led to the crash. Police have taken the Hong Kong man into custody for a breathalyser test to determine his blood alcohol content. They are also working to clear the wrecked vehicle from the scene to restore normal traffic flow for the affected area, ensuring that residents can use the road without further hindrance, reported Khaosod. The incident highlights the dangers of driving under the influence of substances, as well as the unexpected behaviours that can result from such actions. 18. Security footage revealed a group of men assaulting a victim with an iron rod in Pattaya, leading to severe injuries requiring eight stitches. The victim, who had no prior acquaintance with the assailants, calls for authorities to apprehend the attackers. Today, 25 year old Pattaya native, Thawatchai reported being attacked by a group of unknown men. He suffered a head injury that needed eight stitches, and his girlfriend also sustained head injuries. Thawatchai is urging police to quickly apprehend the culprits, fearing another possible attack if they cross paths again. He recounted the incident, stating that around 12.10am while working in Soi LK Buakhao, he noticed a group of teenagers loitering near his workplace but didn’t pay much attention, as he had no known conflicts. Riding a blue Honda Scoopy motorbike, wearing a pink raincoat, he proceeded to drop his brother off at Soi VC South Pattaya, with his girlfriend seated in front and his brother behind. Upon reaching Soi VC, the three attackers followed them on a motorbike. One of the attackers, wearing a black jacket, came alongside and struck Thawatchai’s brother from behind with an iron rod before striking him on the head and face, causing them to fall off the bike. 19. Power play: Thailand to spark up grey businesses in Myanmar Image taken from TechJuice Thailand may soon provide electricity and Internet access to grey businesses across the border in Myanmar, according to Move Forward Party list-MP Rangsiman Rome. 20. Thailand may soon provide electricity and Internet access to grey businesses across the border in Myanmar, according to Move Forward Party list-MP Rangsiman Rome. This decision comes after the previous revocation of electricity and water supplies due to an increase in transnational crimes, including call centres. Rangsiman, who chairs a House committee on state security, expressed concerns that power supplies may have been previously provided to suspected grey businesses in Myanmar, including call centre gangs. Following a field inspection in Tak’s Mae Sot district, Rangsiman revealed that the Thai government had cut the electricity network between Thailand and Shwe Kokko, a town in Myanmar’s Myawaddy city, which currently relies on electricity generators. However, he noted that negotiations to reconnect the electricity network are underway. Rangsiman also highlighted the risk that bad actors, such as call centre gangs in Myanmar, might catch mobile phone signals from Thailand, given that there are around 60 telecommunication towers in the country facing towards Myawaddy. “We need to discuss the potential risks these towers pose and whether some should be removed.” The committee plans to address this issue with the National Security Council next Friday and also expects to meet with the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Domestic flights Rangsiman emphasised the importance of discussing the matter with the Provincial Electricity Authority, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, and major telecommunications companies to explore the feasibility of removing certain telecommunication towers. He additionally raised concerns about domestic flights to and from Mae Sot, which have recently seen an influx of Chinese passengers, speculating that these trips could be linked to illicit businesses, given that the northwest district serves as a gateway to Myawaddy but lacks tourist attractions. Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been actively cracking down on transnational crime operations near the Thai border. On May 14, government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke announced that agencies had been instructed to cut cross-border electricity and water supplies. “The prime minister has ordered a crackdown on cross-border electricity and water supplies to combat transnational crime.” The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission was also directed to cut cross-border telephone signals and adjust antennas to address cybercrime and call centre gangs, reported Bangkok Post. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges Thailand faces in securing its borders and preventing the facilitation of illicit activities through infrastructure and telecommunications networks. The government’s efforts to address these issues underline the importance of maintaining national security and curbing criminal activities that exploit cross-border connections. 22. Japan is contemplating an extension of its tourist visa waiver for Thai citizens due to rising concerns over its potential discontinuation next year. This matter surfaced during discussions held in Tokyo between Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa and his Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa. Trade and investment relations were the primary focus of their meeting. However, the visa waiver programme was also a significant topic. Japan has permitted Thai tourists and businesspeople to enter without a visa for up to 15 days since 2013. This unilateral and temporary measure has been renewed every three years, with the current extension set to last until 2025. Nevertheless, there are worries among those who overstay their visas that the programme might be terminated next year. Kamikawa reportedly agreed to consider the extension of the visa waiver while both countries address the issue of overstayers, reported Bangkok Post. “We are committed to strengthening our bilateral ties and ensuring that legitimate travel between our nations continues smoothly.” The continuation of the visa waiver programme is seen as a crucial element in maintaining strong tourism and trade connections between Japan and Thailand. 24. A Thai man is seeking legal action against a man who brutally assaulted him after they connected on a dating app and arranged a meeting at the attacker’s condominium. More victims came forward after the story went viral. The 23 year old victim shared the details of the incident, which took place on March 11, from the news Twitter account, Red Skull, along with photos of his injuries. The victim explained that he met the alleged attacker, Phiphat Phattaradatekunchorn, on a dating app. Phiphat’s profile claimed he was the CEO and owner of several beauty clinics and was about to open a new branch in Bangkok’s Ramkhamhaeng neighbourhood. On the day of the attack, they arranged to meet at Phiphat’s condo. Instead of coming down to greet him, Phiphat threw a keycard from his balcony to the victim waiting below. Upon entering the dimly lit condo, Phiphat told the victim, “I was swimming, waiting for you. I’m high now.” The victim was shocked to learn of Phiphat’s drug use. Phiphat then hugged him and asked for oral sex. Unexpectedly, during the act, Phiphat punched the victim in the face, prompting the victim to stop and ask to leave the room, but Phiphat refused. Physical, verbal abuse Phiphat continued to physically and verbally abuse the victim throughout the night, forcing him to perform oral sex while making derogatory comments about his appearance and financial status. He also bragged about being a CEO and threatened the victim with his father’s supposed influence. According to the victim, Phiphat was outraged with him for being ugly. “Can you afford a luxury condo like me? Do you know who I am? I’m the CEO of beauty clinics. Can a person like you do this? Do you know my father? Do you know what he is capable of?” The victim was finally rescued the following morning when his friend came to his aid. He later learned from condo staff that he was not the only victim. The staff recently saw an injured woman fleeing Phiphat’s room with a bloodied face. The victim revealed that she filed a complaint with police but the case went nowhere. Aside from sharing his story with the news account, the victim sought help from non-profit organisation Saimai Survive, as well. The suspect, Phiphat, defended himself on Instagram, claiming that he was the victim of the assault. However, more and more victims came forward to expose his violent behaviour. One victim revealed that the attacker even demanded compensation from him after his blood from the assault made a mess on his bedding. He added that the attacker threatened to shoot him in the head and claimed that his father was a police officer. The victim revealed the case is ongoing and it has not yet reached a conclusion.
