  2. Pichit exit rocks premiership boat amid legal storm Pichit Chuenban, the Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, has resigned after a legal complaint from senators that threatens the premiership of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. Pichit’s resignation follows a bombshell petition from 40 senators, urging the Constitutional Court to scrutinise the qualifications of both Prime Minister Srettha and Minister Pichit, alleging they fall short under Article 160 of the Constitution. The court is poised to decide on May 23 whether to accept this pivotal petition. In his resignation letter, Pichit expressed confidence in his qualifications but prioritised national stability over personal ambition. “Although I firmly believe I meet all legal requirements, this matter now involves the prime minister, our administration’s leader. To ensure our country moves forward without disruption, I will not hold onto my position at the expense of national interest. Therefore, I resign, effective May 21, 2024.” Pichit’s tenure was short-lived, serving only 23 days since the Srettha 1/1 Cabinet reshuffle on April 28, reported Pattaya Mail. 4. Record sea surface temperatures in Thailand’s eastern gulf coast are causing severe damage to the region’s aquatic life, raising concerns among scientists and local communities. Coral reefs that were once vibrant and colourful, situated about 5 metres underwater, have turned white due to coral bleaching. This phenomenon indicates deteriorating health caused by elevated water temperatures. Data reveals that sea surface temperatures in the Eastern Gulf of Thailand reached 32.73 degrees Celsius recently, with underwater readings slightly higher at around 33 degrees, said Lalita Putchim, a marine biologist from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR). “I couldn’t find a single healthy coral…almost all of the species have bleached, there’s very little that’s not affected.” In the Trat archipelago, including over 66 islands, and stretching over 28.4 square kilometres of coral reef, Lalita observed that up to 30% of coral life was bleaching, with 5% already dead. “If water temperatures do not cool, more coral will die. It’s global boiling, not just global warming.” The rising temperatures are not just affecting coral reefs but are also impacting other marine life and the livelihoods of local fishermen. A local fisherman Sommay Singsura, recounts that his daily seafood catch has dramatically decreased. While previously earning up to 10,000 baht (US$275) a day, he now sometimes returns empty-handed, reported Bangkok Post. “There used to be jackfish, short mackerel, and many others … But now, the situation isn’t good. The weather isn’t like what it used to be.” According to the Dean of Marine Technology at Burapha University, Sarawut Siriwong, coral reefs serve as both a food resource and habitat for marine life and act as natural barriers preventing coastal erosion. “If bleaching causes marine life to decrease, fishermen will need to spend more to get their catch, which could see selling prices rise. While this [coral bleaching] would affect food security, at the same time, their [community] income stability is also at stake.” By Mitch Connor Image courtesy of the XL Caitlin Seaview Survey Source: The Thaiger 2024-05-22 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
  5. Thai groom-to-be attempts organ sale & suicide over lack of dowry Photo via Channel 7 Police in the northeastern province of Sakon Nakhon successfully intervened in a suicide attempt by a Thai man who was unable to pay his 200,000 baht dowry, even after attempting to sell his organs Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1327971-thai-groom-to-be-attempts-organ-sale-suicide-over-lack-of-dowry/
  6. Police in the northeastern province of Sakon Nakhon successfully intervened in a suicide attempt by a Thai man who was unable to pay his 200,000 baht dowry, even after attempting to sell his organs. Officers from Mueang Sakon Nakhon Police Station and the rescue team were alerted to the suicide attempt at a pedestrian bridge outside the Robinson shopping mall on Nittayo Road in Sakon Nakhon at around 10.30am yesterday, May 22, and rushed to the scene. The Thai man, identified only as Pete, was seen pacing back and forth on the bridge, repeatedly attempting to jump. Officers closed the road beneath the bridge and prepared a safety cushion. Rescuers and police then convinced Pete to abandon his suicide plan. After the discussion, he asked the police to contact his girlfriend and bring her to the scene. While waiting for his girlfriend, Pete revealed to officers that he had been in a relationship with his girlfriend for nearly a year and planned the wedding with a 200,000 baht dowry. However, the wedding could not proceed because Pete could not afford the dowry for his future wife. Pete’s girlfriend declined to attend the scene, prompting officers to persuade Pete to communicate with her over the phone. Pete requested the police to place the phone on the ground for him to retrieve, which they accepted. However, as Pete moved towards the phone, the police swiftly apprehended him and transported him to the hospital for additional treatment. According to police, the groom-to-be lived in Bangkok but his girlfriend was from Sakon Nakhon province. He travelled to Sakon Nakhon three weeks before the incident to prepare for the wedding ceremony. A week ago, Pete made a Facebook post offering to sell his organs to raise money for the dowry but there were no takers. Unable to afford the dowry, he had to leave his girlfriend’s home, abandoning their wedding plans. After the wedding fell through, Pete’s girlfriend cut off all contact with him. Despite his attempts to reconcile with her, he was unsuccessful, which ultimately led to his attempted suicide. 8. On Thursday, the Constitutional Court approved a complaint that seeks to oust Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. The complaint is about his appointment of a former lawyer, who has a criminal history, to his cabinet. The Prime Minister has not yet been asked to step down from his role and will continue his duties until a verdict is delivered. The complaint was filed by a group of 40 senators. They claim that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin broke constitutional rules when he gave Pichit Chuenban, a minister attached to the Prime Minister's office, his job. The senators said this appointment was not legal because Pichit had been convicted for contempt of court in 2008 after he tried to bribe court officials. They argue this prior conviction makes him unfit for a ministerial role. Pichit decided to resign recently to protect the Prime Minister from this case. However, the court has not accepted the case against Pichit because he has already stepped down. Pichit has long served as an aide for the Shinawatra family. This is the same party where Prime Minister Srettha is a leader. He also represented former Prime Ministers Yingluck and Thaksin Shinawatra in major court cases in the past. 10. The Ministry of Education in Thailand is looking to change its rules to categorize e-cigarettes as drugs, according to the ministry's permanent secretary, Suthep Kaengsanthia. The aim of the move is to prevent the rising use of e-cigarettes among students. Schools across the nation have been ordered to act against vaping on their properties. However, it's unclear from the current plans which aspect of the 'e-cigarette' would be tagged as a drug. Is it the e-cigarette devices, the vaping liquids, or the nicotine in the e-cigarette liquids? "We've changed our rules to list e-cigarettes under the banned category of narcotic drugs. There will be severe punishment for students found taking e-cigarettes to school, similar to the penalty for having illegal drugs,” says the minister. The rule change is being examined by the Council of State, with the new law expected to take effect within a month. There are no more details available yet, and the effects on other e-cigarette users in Thailand are unclear. Could they face arrest because they are using a 'narcotic'? Besides the proposed ban, the ministry has started a program to increase school safety. This involves working with local police, public health offices, and drug control agencies. The aim of this program is to shield students from various potential social risks around the time they leave and return home. File photo for reference only. 12. Kanika Aunjit, the government's Deputy Spokesperson, has praised local authorities on their combined efforts to tackle major drug operations aimed at promoting public safety. The Ministry of Public Health, spearheaded by Somsak Thepsutin, has recently updated regulations to make possession of even a single methamphetamine pill illegal. The new policy labeled "One User, One Dealer, One Producer," intends to track and confiscate the assets of drug makers. Kanika has stressed the severity of the methamphetamine problem in Thailand, with the drug making up 80% of the country's drug use. This issue results in considerable economic and social damage while negatively impacting the health of users and their families. She pointed to the success of large drug busts as proof of the authorities' efficiency, including the seizure of over 300,000 pills in Nong Khai and 6 million pills in Chiang Rai. The anti-drug campaign is a joint effort between various agencies, involving the Northern Border Narcotics Suppression Command, the Pha Muang Task Force, and other relevant officials. The government has expressed gratitude towards their dedication to the cause. Furthermore, Kanika reassured that the government will persist in its rigorous campaign against drugs and illegal activities to preserve social order and the safety of the public. This cooperative effort requires smooth collaboration between administrative authorities, the police, the military, and security agencies to implement the law effectively. 14. Another Thai monk disgraced his Buddhist faith by sexually assaulting a woman while travelling from Bangkok to Chon Buri on a bus, by groping her breasts when she fell asleep. The victim, 67 year old Siriporn Kamnok, took to social media to warn women travelling alone on public transport to be aware of sexual assaults, even from a monk. Siriporn included a video of the incident, which was recorded by a witness on the bus, in her post. In the video, the monk was seen sitting behind Siriporn’s seat. He put his hand into a gap between Siriporn’s seat and the window to touch her breasts. The monk noticed that the witness was recording his actions but did not stop and faced the witness with wild eyes. Siriporn told Channel 7 that she took the coach bus from Bangkok back to her home province in Chon Buri. She was sleepy and dozed off along the way but was awakened by the sexual assault. Siriporn explained that she felt a finger touching her breasts when she fell asleep and woke up. She then sat straight and avoided leaning against the window as she did before. The monk did not dare to repeat the assault when he saw Siriporn was awake. After the monk got off the bus, the female witness approached her and shared the video of the assault with her. The witness told Siriporn that she saw all of the monk’s actions but did not dare to notify Siriporn because the monk gave her angry looks. Siriporn revealed that she did not file a complaint against the monk and opted to share the story on social media to warn other women who travelled alone. This is not an isolated case. Almost every week a story makes headlines of badly-behaved monks. 16. Singapore Airlines passengers share their experiences of mid-air turmoil at 37,000 feet As of this morning, 79 passengers and six crew members are still in Bangkok, Thailand, receiving treatment for injuries they suffered during severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight. The incident occurred on May 21 during flight SQ321, en route from London to Singapore. The plane encountered the drastic turbulence about ten hours into the journey, while flying over the northern Andaman Sea near Myanmar's coast. The turbulence resulted in an unexpected drop of approximately 6,000 feet in three minutes, causing disarray within the plane. Passengers and items were tossed around, resulting in numerous injuries and damage to the plane's structure. At the time of the incident, breakfast was being served onboard. Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old passenger, described seeing fellow passengers being thrown against the ceiling before landing unevenly, some even crashing onto the floor. He noted that several individuals suffered serious head injuries and concussions. An Australian passenger, Teandra Tukhunen, recounted being flung against the cabin's roof and subsequently onto the floor, causing her injuries. She stated that the turbulence hit shortly after the 'fasten seat belts' sign was illuminated, giving passengers little time to protect themselves. The sudden air disturbance reportedly resulted in the death of a 73-year-old British man named Geoffrey Kitchen, who was a retired insurance professional and musical theatre director. He and his wife were on a six-week trip, intending to visit multiple countries. Due to the accident, the flight was forced to divert to Bangkok. In Bangkok, technicians examined the plane after an emergency landing, finding that the 15-year-old Boeing 777-300 appeared unscathed despite the chaos inside. Later, a relief flight carried 131 passengers and 12 crew members to Singapore, arriving at Changi Airport at 5am today. There, family members were waiting to greet the shaken passengers. Currently, the aforementioned 79 passengers and six crew members remain in Bangkok to receive medical treatment for their injuries. This rare air travel incident has negatively affected many passengers, with one saying he has no immediate plans to fly again. File photo for reference only. They quickly responded to the scene of the accident. On arriving at the location, they discovered the body of the victim on the roadside. 20. On May 21st, 2024, heavy rainfall led to floods in several regions of Pattaya. The rain also resulted in a partial collapse of the Third Road, situated near the Hollywood Disco and New Season 88 in North Pattaya. The rainfall, which was intermittent throughout the day, led to water levels rising to between 10 and 70 centimeters at various places. The most affected areas were the railway road stretching between Soi Wat Thammasammakhi and Soi Khao Talo, Sukhumvit Road in South Pattaya, Phaniat Chang Intersection, and Mum Aroi Intersection. These sites are usually prone to floods. The flooding made these roads impassable for small cars and motorcycles. However, the city’s new drainage system helped the water to recede quickly, bringing it back to normal levels. Nonetheless, after the water had receded, the locals near Hollywood Disco and New Season 88 in North Pattaya noticed some damage to the surface of the Third Road. It's believed that water pressure and erosion caused a 10 centimeter sink in the 5-meter section of the road. Thankfully, the quick response by local inhabitants and authorities prevented any injuries or damage to vehicles. Aware of the situation, nearby residents reached out to Pattaya City officials to amend the damage. The engineering team of Pattaya City, along with other relevant agencies, inspected the road and immediately closed it to traffic. Using backhoes, they are now correcting the damage done to the road surface. It's expected that the road will soon be reopened to traffic. The woman posted a video on TikTok on May 21, 2024, sharing how she had to drive a taxi to Don Mueang International Airport at 3 AM due to the driver falling asleep. The woman and her friend called a cab in the early hours, and they noticed the driver looked tired while behind the wheel. Things took a turn when the driver actually fell asleep during the journey. This led the woman to ask politely if she could drive instead. In the video, it's clear that the driver allowed the woman to take over and moved to the back seat for some much-needed sleep. The peculiar journey was recorded and posted on TikTok by the woman's friend, who humorously added, "We drove ourselves from Pattaya to Don Mueang Airport, with the driver sleeping soundly behind us." 24. Phuket, Thailand – A British tourist's holiday in Phuket ended in tragedy when he died following a jet ski accident earlier this month. Jonathan Greene, 37, from Stoke-on-Trent, lost his life while vacationing on the idyllic Thai island. The incident occurred as Greene, who lived on Church Avenue in Baddeley Green, was enjoying the renowned beach resort. Despite efforts to save him, Greene succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Bangkok on May 6. Details of the tragic event were revealed during the opening of an inquest by North Staffordshire assistant coroner Duncan Ritchie. The coroner provided initial information about Greene's death. "Jonathan William Greene was born on March 10, 1987, and died on May 6, 2024, in a Bangkok hospital. His occupation was an electrician," Ritchie stated. "He was on holiday, and his family was informed that he had been involved in a jet ski accident. A post-mortem examination was conducted in Thailand, indicating drowning as the suspected cause of death, thus categorizing it as an unnatural death. This hearing has been adjourned pending the preparation of further reports," the coroner concluded. The inquiry into Greene’s death is ongoing as his family and friends mourn the loss of a loved one who had embarked on what was supposed to be a joyful vacation.
