  1. A bedridden patient tragically passed away in Bangkok due to a late response from a medical team. Unhappiness with the delay led the patient's son to physically attack a rescue officer. Deputy Chief of Investigation at Lumphini Police Station, Lieutenant Colonel Phanupong Chaiyakul, received reports about an unconscious patient from Erawan Medical Centre's rescue officers. A team was promptly sent to a condominium located in Khlong Toei District, Bangkok. On arrival, the medical team was confronted by the patient's son. While waiting for the elevator, the rescue officer, Somchai Klongchaeng, attempted to find out more about the patient's condition. The son, dissatisfied, verbally abused Somchai and then began to physically assault him. The son questioned the team's tardiness and asked why another team wasn't deployed. Bystanders broke up the fight and the son went to Lumphini Police Station to give an account of events. In a statement, Somchai said that he had been told about the emergency by family members. They described the patient as unconscious and unresponsive, but still breathing. However, no ambulance was available in the immediate area, so the team had to use a standby vehicle, which took almost 30 minutes to arrive. Somchai further stated that family members had said the son often acted aggressively due to mental health issues and a history of substance abuse. His aggression stopped the medical team from examining the patient as their safety was at risk. Eventually, volunteer medics managed to check the patient, but by then he had died. Somchai insisted he had only been trying to get medical information and had not done anything to provoke the son. The police have already started an investigation. The injured rescue officer has been advised to undergo a medical examination at the Police Hospital. The police will continue their investigation today, which may lead to legal consequences. 3. A Thai woman attacked three people, including a toddler, with boiling hot cooking oil due to a disagreement over unsettled rent amounting to 8,000 baht. The victims, two adult women and a two-year-old girl, sought assistance from the Paveena Foundation for Women and Children, both for medical care and in making sure that the woman responsible faced legal consequences. The incident occurred on May 17th at a restaurant in Soi Sathorn 17, Sathorn district, Bangkok. The victims, 25-year-old Wannisa Sairat, her 57-year-old mother Sommai Pakaew, and Wannisa's daughter, got into a conflict with a 49-year-old woman, referred to as "A", who was the caretaker of Sommai's rental accommodation. The argument began when the caretaker confronted Sommai about her overdue rent of 22,000 baht. Sommai showed that she had already settled 14,000 baht and committed to paying the remaining 8,000 baht by the end of the month as evidence. However, the caretaker was not convinced and forcefully grabbed Sommai's phone. In retaliation, Sommai slapped the caretaker's hand. Furious, the caretaker retaliated by throwing boiling hot oil at the three victims and then fled the scene. Unfortunately, when the victims arrived at a local hospital, they were not immediately attended to because the emergency department and VIP rooms were full. Due to the risk of infection from their burns, they also could not be placed in areas with other patients. Both Wannisa and her daughter suffered intense burns on their faces and bodies. Sommai experienced minor burns on her left arm. Wannisa's daughter was critically injured and may be dealing with mental trauma because of the assault. Wannisa has since filed a lawsuit against the suspect at the Yannawa Police Station. Despite the suspect's attempt to persuade Wannisa to drop the charges, she is determined to see justice served. The Paveena Foundation has arranged for the family's medical treatment at Yanhee Hospital and is working closely with law enforcement to ensure the perpetrator is held accountable for her actions. 5. A Thai man in the central province of Uthai Thani accused his wife of having an affair with a monk from a temple near their home and leaving him to repay 500,000 baht in debt. The 61 year old man, Sanan, revealed that he married his 53 year old wife 30 years ago and shared one daughter. He collected recycled garbage and sold it to make a living while his wife stayed home to take care of their daughter and 30 cats and dogs. According to Sanan, his wife visited a temple near their home almost every day to get leftover food for their pets. In return, she cleaned the temple and the monk’s utensils. Sanan said he never suspected anything about his wife’s temple visits until she started returning home very late at night. He also saw a call from a monk at the temple on her phone. As suspicions grew, Sanan asked to inspect her phone but his wife declined to allow him access and refused to respond to any queries regarding the monk. Shortly thereafter, Sanan’s wife departed their residence on her sidecar motorcycle and failed to return. Abandoning the vehicle at their son-in-law’s residence, she did not attempt to contact anyone, including their daughter. Sanan decided to go to the temple to talk with the monk he suspected of having an affair with his wife, but the monk was not there. The abbot told Sanan that he already expelled the monk from the temple. Sanan suspected that the monk and his wife were together, yet he proceeded to file a report with the police regarding his wife’s disappearance. Furthermore, Sanan revealed that he now bears the burden of settling approximately 500,000 baht in debt by himself and must also tend to the needs of their 30 cats and dogs in his wife’s absence. Sanan said he still loves his wife and is ready to forgive her. He is happy to welcome her home if she changes her mind and wants to be with him. 7. Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin remains resolute amid an ethics complaint that could see him suspended. While on an official visit to Italy on Sunday, PM Srettha addressed the brewing controversy. A group of acting senators filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court, accusing him of violating the code of ethics in his recent appointment of PM’s Office Minister Pichit Chuenban. Despite the potential fallout, Srettha remains undeterred. “No, I won’t lose my concentration. I have a team of working staff and we are confident in our innocence, but I do not want to elaborate. It would be pressuring the Constitutional Court.” The 62 year old Thai prime minister emphasised that he respects the checks on his government and views them as normal. His team is preparing a thorough explanation to prove their innocence. The controversy centres on Pichit, previously an adviser to the Bangkok-born politician and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s lawyer in the infamous lunchbox bribe scandal. This scandal has raised serious questions about Pichit’s suitability for a Cabinet position. Pichit served prison time for contempt of court after attempting to bribe officials in a high-profile land case involving Thaksin. On June 25, 2008, the Supreme Court sentenced Pichit and two colleagues to six months in prison. They allegedly tried to bribe Supreme Court officials by offering a lunchbox containing 2 million baht in cash a fortnight earlier. This case, known as the Ratchadaphisek land case, resulted in a two-year prison sentence for Thaksin in 2008, reported Bangkok Post. The Constitutional Court is set to meet on Thursday to decide whether to accept the senators’ ethics petition regarding Srettha and Pichit. 9. Taipei law enforcement swooped on an illicit underground bar in the Zhongshan District in Taipei, Taiwan, uncovering a web of illegal activities and arresting 24 Thai women suspected of working as hostesses. The raid, conducted on Saturday, May 18, resulted in the arrest of the 29 year old bar owner, identified only as Chiang, along with four of his employees and 17 customers. The Taipei Police Precinct revealed the details in a statement on Sunday, shedding light on the clandestine operation. The Thai women were fined an undisclosed amount under the Social Order Maintenance Act and were swiftly handed over to a National Immigration Agency (NIA) special brigade for repatriation to Thailand. Meanwhile, Chiang and his employees face further investigation by the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office. The customers were questioned and released. The Zhongshan Police Precinct launched the investigation following a tip-off about a sex bar operating in the basement of a building on Minsheng E Road. A specialised task force was formed to gather evidence, which revealed that Chiang had recruited Thai women on short-term visitor visas to work as hostesses. These women were expected to drink with and engage intimately with patrons, who tipped them with wristbands that could be converted into cash. On Saturday morning, the task force, along with the NIA brigade, raided the premises, apprehending all suspects and confiscating over NT$410,000 (approximately 460,000 baht) in revenue, an accounting book, wireless electronic devices, and remote access controls, reported Taipei Times. Additionally, they seized a marijuana cartridge, a ketamine cigarette, and other incriminating evidence from the employees. 11. Barely a week after his release from prison, a Bangkok man was apprehended for distributing Yaba pills obtained from a former inmate friend. He was caught selling pills at 8 baht each, totalling 6,000 pills, before being ensnared in a police sting operation. At 7.40pm yesterday, investigative units from Sing Buri Provincial Police, alongside local authorities, received intelligence about a drug dealer planning to distribute narcotics to customers. In response to the tip-off, the authorities orchestrated an operation to encircle the following area near Wat Pho Kaew Nopakhun in Mueng district, Sing Buri province, waiting for a chance to strike. Shortly after, at 8.30pm, they spotted a 43 year old man, identified as Kla, arriving in a green-yellow taxi. He disembarked, carrying a bag and wearing a helmet, and headed towards a dimly lit corner within the temple. Law enforcement officers swiftly moved in and apprehended him. The ensuing body search and inspection yielded three bags of methamphetamine pills (Yaba), amounting to 6,000 in total, alongside a mobile phone used in the explicit sale. Kla and the taxi driver were subsequently taken in for further questioning at the police station. Kla confessed that he had been released from prison just seven days prior, after serving time for drug trafficking. Upon his release a week prior, he had been residing in an apartment complex in Rom Klao, before being approached by a fellow former inmate nicknamed Jack Rom Klao, who offered him drugs to sell. Facing financial constraints, Kla agreed to return to his former illicit profession. He contacted customers in Sing Buri province, looking to sell the drugs under the price set by Jack for 15,000 baht per bag (7.5 baht per pill). He had arranged to meet a customer, agreeing to sell three bundles for 16,000 baht each, keeping some profit for himself. After acquiring the drugs, he rode a motorcycle, parked it near the agreed meeting point and took a taxi inside. However, before he could complete the transaction, law enforcement swooped in and police officers promptly apprehended him, reported Khaosod. 13. Officials in Phuket have uncovered 26 illegal jet skis following multiple complaints from local residents and hoteliers in the northern part of the island. The complaints mentioned jet skis operating outside of their allowed areas in Ao Por Bay, Naka Island, Koh Rang, and Yamu Bay. These areas are situated on the island's quieter eastern waters. Last week, officers from the Phuket Marine Office and Phuket Marine Police conducted inspections in several locations and found the unlicensed jet skis. The operators were fined up to 10,000 baht and were told not to use the jet skis until they acquire legal licenses. Aside from jet skis, officials were also looking into reports of "Jet Cars" being used in Yamu Bay. While they didn't find any in operation, they did find four parked in a shipyard. The owner, who hasn't been identified, was asked to register the Jet Cars before using them for business. The officials said that information about the Jet Cars can be found on the Phuket Jetski Club's Facebook page. File photo for reference only. 14. Lawyer Taken Into Custody Over Claims of Sexual Assault and Threats to Female Client File photo for reference only. 15. A well-known lawyer and ex-parliamentary candidate was arrested yesterday, accused of raping and threatening a female client. The allegations were serious enough that the female victim attempted suicide on a ship due to emotional trauma. General Thiti Saengsawang, a senior police officer, oversaw the arrest which was executed by Major General Teeradet Thamsutee's team, including investigators from several departments. The accused, 34-year-old Arm, was arrested at a house in Hat Yai, Songkhla Province, acting on a warrant issued on May 3. The victim, a 26-year-old woman, became known nationwide last year after attempting suicide by jumping from the HTMS Chakri Naruebet ship docked at Chuksamed Pier, in Sattahip Naval Base. Petty Officer Daoloi Nathongchai and Private Kuhat Sun Samai from the Royal Thai Navy rescued her, and the story was widely shared on social media on November 23 last year. According to the woman, she sought legal help from the accused lawyer in late 2022, when she was trying to recover over 100,000 baht from a friend. Eventually, her lawyer turned politician lured her to Bangkok citing a political meeting. She drove to a small hotel in Don Mueang, where the accused had planned to meet her. Once there, she alleges, he raped her. Following the incident, she claims he issued multiple threats to keep her silent. Despite her attempts to report the crime, she experienced ongoing intimidation. Arm denies these allegations, insisting the encounter was consensual. He also mentioned that he has filed charges against the woman for extortion and false reporting. After Arm's arrest, he was transferred to Don Mueng Police Station for legal procedures. It was found that Arm was prosecuted twice in 2023 for trespassing in Thung Lung, Songkhla, and another case of rape and coercion in Don Mueang. The allegations are indicative of power abuse and manipulation, making the case all the more compelling for robust legal action to safeguard vulnerable individuals in their pursuit of justice. As the case unfolds, the primary focus is on ensuring a fair trial and holding those who misuse their roles as leaders accountable. File photo for reference only. The 30-year-old caused extensive damage to a hotel room in the Sathorn district, burning and breaking various items of property. The local police were alerted by the manager of the hotel on Southern Sathorn Road on May 19, after the intoxicated visitor went on a wrecking spree. After sobering up, the man informed the police that he checked into the hotel on May 18 at around 3:11 am and stayed till 7 am the next day. 19. A man has turned himself in to the authorities after he had a shootout with a city worker in Sai Ma municipality. The man, after releasing shots at a municipal employee who was in his car, has four charges against him and has been granted bail by the police. The victim of this shooting incident, Saranyut, a 42-year-old worker from Sai Ma municipality, reported to the police yesterday that he was shot while driving his official car. The incident happened at about 8:45 am on Soi Bang Rak Noi 17, in the Bang Rak Noi sub-district, Mueng district, Nonthaburi province. The car was hit several times with bullets which caused the glass to shatter and injure Saranyut. The alleged shooter, Nikhom, 34, surrendered to the police today at Bang Si Mueng Police Station, accompanied by his wife, parents and his 9mm gun that was allegedly used during the shootout. Nikhom's wife, identified as Dia, stated that she attempted to prevent the altercation and advised both parties to apologize and separate. She noted that Nikhom does not usually carry a gun. He intended to leave it at his father's house on that day because no one is usually at their house during weekdays due to work. Dia explained that she ran into the victim, with whom her husband had an earlier disagreement, at Wat Sai Ma temple. She alleged that after the encounter, the person followed them and tried to provoke her husband. Police Colonel Somchai, the head of Bang Si Mueng Police Station, stated that they were informed about the suspect's surrender yesterday. After preliminary investigations, the police found that both parties had prior disagreements and a car chase preceded the shooting. He added that the suspect fired the first shot, perhaps thinking he was about to be attacked. An arrest warrant was issued yesterday, May 19, and four charges were filed against the suspect. The police are currently investigating the suspect's house for more evidence. After confessing to the charges, the suspect was handed to investigators. His family used a land title deed to request for bail, which was not opposed by the police as he surrendered willingly. The charges against the suspect include illegal public possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm in public without a valid reason, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and attempted murder. The next step is for the police to gather more evidence and prepare to prosecute the case according to the law. File photo for reference only. 23. The Director of the Khon Kaen Primary Educational Service Area Office 5 issued an order for a school principal to be removed from their position, following allegations of involvement in a child trafficking ring. The principal is accused of engaging in sexual activities with a 12 year old girl. Authorities from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division, along with the Paweena Foundation, conducted a raid in Khon Kaen province, uncovering a child trafficking network. The school principal was arrested under a warrant issued by the Criminal Court on May 15, this year, and is facing charges of sexual intercourse with a child under 13 years old. The Director of the Khon Kaen Primary Educational Service Area Office 5, Yongyut Promkaew, revealed that an order has been issued to temporarily remove the principal from his position in Chum Phae district, Khon Kaen province. This measure is to facilitate a thorough investigation into the allegations, said Yongyut. “The investigation will be conducted swiftly to ensure the matter is resolved according to legal and administrative procedures.” The inquiry will determine the validity of the allegations, and if proven true, appropriate disciplinary actions will follow, in line with the criminal proceedings. The seriousness of the allegations necessitates a prompt and thorough investigation to uphold the integrity of the educational institution and the Ministry of Education. The investigative committee has already called on the accused principal to participate in the disciplinary process. Preliminary findings were shared with the committee yesterday, and a conclusion is expected within the week. Following this, an official order for the principal’s suspension will be issued, and the case details will be forwarded to the police for further action. Vacant position In response to the vacant principal position, there are considerations for appointing a nearby school’s principal temporarily. This interim arrangement aims to ensure continuity in the school’s operations and development. A permanent appointment is anticipated by August, as the school, known for its good standards, requires a leader to maintain its progress without interruption. The crackdown on the child trafficking ring has not only led to the principal’s arrest but also implicated other individuals. Police continue to investigate and arrest additional suspects involved in purchasing services from the 12-year-old student. The authorities are determined to dismantle the entire network and bring all perpetrators to justice. The educational community and local authorities are deeply concerned about the impact of these events on the school’s reputation and the well-being of the students. Measures are being taken to address these issues, ensure a safe learning environment, and restore confidence in the institution, reported Khaosod. 25. A Thai woman called upon the Thai authorities to conduct a further investigation into the death of her older brother after suspecting his wife of poisoning him in the Isaan province of Mahasarakham. The owner of a Thai massage training centre, 44 year old Pichit “Ton” Kleepjinda, died on April 16 outside the family home in the Mahasarakham province. The cause of his death remains unknown, and somewhat of a mystery as neither his parents nor his wife requested an autopsy. Ton narrowly escaped an attempted assassination in Bangkok on April 8. Two men on a motorcycle approached him while he was driving home from an entertainment venue in the Wang Thong Lang district. The men fired at Ton’s car four times before fleeing. Although injured, Ton managed to drive to the Wang Thong Lang Police Station to file a complaint. The suspects have not yet been arrested. Following the shooting, Ton travelled home to the Mahasarakham province, where he later died in mysterious circumstances. Mod’s mother told police that Ton drank alcohol alone from 5pm until late at night before his death. However, no alcohol glasses or bottles were found near his body. Mod held a three-day funeral ceremony, followed by cremation on the fourth day. According to Channel 8, Ton’s assets, worth about 40 million baht, include four plots of land in Bangkok valued at 20 million baht, six plots of land in Mahasarakham, savings, funds, shares, and a life insurance payout of 16 million baht. Ton and Mod were officially married and had three children. It is believed that his assets will go to his wife and their children. Foul play After Ton’s funeral, his younger sister, 41 year old Natpraphat, said she suspected foul play and is seeking a further investigation, believing it to be murder. Natpraphat claimed that Ton’s lifeless body bore a suspicious sign. His body turned dark, he had claw hands and fingers, and his tears were in blood. Natpraphat suspected that her brother might be poisoned. Natpraphat stressed that she did not intend to accuse Mod but found Ton’s death suspicious. She also highlighted that Mod stood to benefit the most from his demise. Mod refuted the allegations, vehemently denying any involvement in either the shooting or Ton’s passing. She asserted that Ton’s body showed no signs of foul play and suggested that an autopsy be carried out by a doctor and police if there were any suspicions. Additionally, Mod accused Natpraphat of seeking a portion of Ton’s assets. She claimed that Natpraphat had been out of touch with Ton for over a decade and did not attend his funeral or cremation ceremony. Superintendent Jadesada Yangnork of the Wang Thong Lang Police Station revealed to Kom Chad Luek that officers had identified the two suspects involved in the shooting and issued arrest warrants for them. Jadesada believes that their arrest will help clarify the case and determine if others were involved in Ton’s death.
