  2. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai and Chinese officials recently met to address concerns stemming from a Chinese film that negatively depicted Thailand, causing worry among Chinese tourists. Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Puangpet Chunlaiad informed Chinese Ambassador Han Zhiqiang during the meeting that the film titled "No More Bets" wrongly portrayed Thailand with illegal activities, including human trafficking, organ trade, call center scams, and extortion gangs, potentially affecting Chinese tourists’ perceptions of safety. Minister Puangpet clarified that the film was not shot in Thailand but featured the Thai language in some scenes, leading to misunderstandings on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. The aim of the meeting was to reassure Chinese citizens about the film’s inaccuracy and emphasize Thailand’s strict safety measures for tourists. The Thai government also stressed the importance of close communication with China and discussed cooperation between Thailand’s Department of Public Relations and China Media Group (CMG) to prevent misinformation and strengthen bilateral relations. Ambassador Han Zhiqiang responded positively, assuring that Thailand remains a popular destination for Chinese tourists and expressing confidence that this incident would not affect their trust. He also highlighted the upcoming Chinese New Year festival as an opportunity to strengthen travel relations between the two countries. 4. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin declared the government’s determination today to address the chronic informal debt problem, which is affecting many people, by mobilising the police, local officials nationwide and the Finance Ministry to help in mediating settlement of informal debts with creditors in a manner which is fair to both parties and which will enable debtors to maintain their dignity. At a press conference, held at Government House and attended by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and representatives from the police and Finance Ministry, the prime minister said that the government’s method to address the informal debt problem is different from that used by previous governments, because it is a collective effort by several key parties, particularly the police and local officials who are close to the problem, the creditors and debtors, with the government at the core of the debt mediation process. He also warned that the government’s attempt to address this problem is not a cure-all that will eliminate the informal debt problem or prevent people from getting back into the vicious cycle of debt, but he hopes that the problem will ease substantially when the economy recovers. 6. The director-general of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), Pol Col Suriya Singhakamol, has been removed and appointed as the deputy permanent secretary of justice by the cabinet. No explanation was given for Suriya’s abrupt transfer, but it is speculated that this sudden move stems from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s dissatisfaction with the performance of the DSI in the crackdown on illegal import and smuggling of frozen pork, which is harmful to the local industry, reduces prices and risks the spread of animal diseases. During a recent meeting with the DSI chief, for an update of the illegal pork problem, the prime minister openly voiced his dissatisfaction with the lack of progress in addressing the problem. Ending AIDS as a public health threat as part of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal agenda was achievable if policymakers fully invested in community-led responses, and sectors worked together to support and revise policies and regulations that currently impede the work of community organizations, said Praphan, the first doctor to diagnose an AIDS patient in Thailand. “We just need a strong, genuine political commitment from our government that we can end AIDS within the lifetime within a 4-year period of this government by strong advocating on the HIV testing.” Full story: Thai PBS 2023-11-27 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 16. A Thai woman issued a warning to others after a fortune teller tricked her into paying more than 14 million baht for rituals and lured her into having sex with him. The 30 year old victim, named only as A, shared her story with the non-profit organisation Saimai Survive to warn other women and process a lawsuit against the fortune teller. Saimai Survive founder Ekkaphop Lueangprasert accompanied her to the Ministry of Interior yesterday, November 26, to file a complaint. After filing the complaint, A told the media that she met the fortune teller through an advertisement on social media in 2021 and tried to use his fortune telling service over the phone. A said she paid 300 baht for the service and found that the fortune teller gave her an accurate prediction, so she continued to use his service. At the beginning of 2022, the fortune teller told A that she had met an evil spirit because her face looked dark and sad. The fortune teller then asked her to go to his house in the central province of Kanchanaburi for a ceremony to ward off evil spirits. She was taken to his bedroom on the second floor of the house. The fortune teller told her to put on pyjamas and sit on his lap to perform the rituals. The fortune teller hugged her, touched her and kissed her. She was shocked but believed it was part of the ritual, so she let him do so. A month later she went to the house to do the ritual again and the fortune teller did the same to her.
