  12. The ambassador of Thailand to Israel, Pannabha Chandraramya, advised Thai workers who have recently returned from Israel to refrain from going back due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. She updated on the situation during a meeting involving 97 of the nation’s high-ranking overseas representatives at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Pannabha suggested that those who had returned from Israel should wait for the resolution of the Israel-Hamas conflict before deciding to resume their work in the country. She revealed that some Thai workers have already returned to Israel, but the exact number remains unknown. It is believed that they arrived in Israel via third-party countries. The Israeli government has been enticing foreign workers to stay and work in the country. For some Thai workers burdened with significant debts, these incentives have become too attractive to resist, Pannabha said. “I’d prefer them to hold on for a while as we are assessing the situation to ensure their safety before permitting Thai workers to return.” Approximately 300 Thais have voluntarily chosen to stay in the designated red or danger zones, despite the embassy’s repeated attempts to convince them to leave. 14. The chairman of Global Compact Network Thailand (GCNT) called on the government to increase its investment in human resources development in preparation for Society 5.0. This new era will be marked by the prominent role of innovative technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in driving the global economy. Suphachai Chearavanont made these remarks while addressing the GCNT Forum 2023 on the theme Partnership for Human Capital 5.0 towards Sustainable Intelligence (SI)-Based Society. He underscored the importance of human resources as a pivotal factor in achieving the United Nations Framework for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to Suphachai, enhanced human resources are critical for steering Society 5.0, given the significant role AI and advanced technology will play in socio-economic development. He noted that Thailand’s human capital investment is currently low in comparison to its GDP growth, reported Bangkok Post. “The global human capital index indicates that Thailand should act swiftly and intensify its investment in human resources development. Under Society 5.0, we are likely to confront numerous challenges due to a lack of comprehensive knowledge and technological skills. “It is crucial to equip our human resources to establish a Sustainable Intelligence-Based Society, or SI Society, and to reinforce norms and ethics to ensure SI over AI, thereby preventing any misuse of technology.” By Mitch Connor Caption: Picture courtesy of ThaiPost Full story: The Thaiger 2023-11-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 16. The former Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor urged the government to reconsider its tourism strategy to improve the dwindling Chinese market. Predictions for this year suggest that arrivals from China will only total 26.8% of the 2019 level. Former TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn suggested that the government should negotiate with China to secure more flight routes and slots for Thai airlines on a parity basis with Chinese airlines. This will not only enhance the recovery rate but also sustain reasonable airfares amidst the current economic downturn. Between October 2023 and March 2024, referred to as the cool season, flights between Thailand and China have seen a 24.3% recovery, with 16,330 flights in comparison to 67,062 flights in 2019. Up until November 20, Chinese tourist arrivals have reached nearly 3 million this year, which is a 26.8% recovery from 2019. The average daily arrival of Chinese tourists is 9,196, which falls short of the 30,000 per day recorded in 2019. Former TAT governor Yuthasak stated that to attract more Chinese tourists, Thailand needs to address allegations of tourism scams and fraud. He suggested that the tourism industry should offer high-quality products and services and that all sectors should work together to restore tourist confidence. Yuthasak also highlighted the importance of using key opinion leaders and influencers in marketing campaigns to attract Chinese tourists. 18. The Thai PM is defending the temporary visa waiver recently introduced for Chinese tourists, despite several airlines cancelling slots due to low demand. According to a Bangkok Post report, a number of Chinese carriers have cancelled landing and take-off rights for Thailand due to being unable to fill flights. Thailand recently introduced temporary visa-free entry until February 29 next year for arrivals from China and Kazakhstan. There was a short-lived uptick in Chinese arrivals when the scheme was launched, with numbers going from 17,000 a day to 18,000. However, that temporary rise coincided with China’s big Golden Week holiday period. Once that was over, numbers dropped to between 8,000 – 9,000 a day. They then increased again to 10,000 – 11,000 a day in November. 20. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has clarified the process of appointing a new police superintendent, highlighting that no Members of Parliament have requested such appointments, nor does he possess any power to interfere in these matters. In a meeting with members of the Pheu Thai Party, Srettha addressed a common misinterpretation regarding the superintendent’s appointment. He stressed that the topic of the meeting was predominantly about drug-related issues, not police appointments, which fall under the purview of the Royal Thai Police and are based on performance evaluations. Srettha also referred to his previous remarks about certain officers being either “disappointed or satisfied” with their appointments, explaining that this was related to performance issues and that his role was limited to expressing concerns about drug problems in certain areas.
