Luxembourg family demands justice after fatal road accident Photo courtesy of iStock/October 13, 2020, Riga, Latvia, damaged motorbike on the city road at the scene of an accident A tragic accident in Phuket has left the family of a young woman from Luxembourg seeking answers. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1312508-luxembourg-family-demands-justice-after-fatal-road-accident/ -
A tragic accident in Phuket has left the family of a young woman from Luxembourg seeking answers. Nineteen-year-old Schintgen Cey-lan was killed in a road collision earlier this month, along with her American boyfriend, 21 year old Nickolas Joseph Ayoub. The two were riding a motorbike when a car, driven by Russian national Irina Pustovalova, hit them from behind. The incident was recorded on CCTV, shedding light on the circumstances of the fatal incident. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of November 5 on Wiset Road, Rawai, saw both Cey-lan and Ayoub die at the scene. Pustovalova, who was injured in the crash, was hospitalised before the police arrived. Her car had veered off the road, ending up in a ditch after colliding with a power pole. The recording from Rawai Municipality’s CCTV shows that the couple was riding at a reasonable speed and was in the left lane when they were hit. The right lane was free of traffic. Despite the arrival of Major General Saksira Phueakam, the national Tourist Police Commissioner, in Phuket the next day, no information regarding the accident has been released by the police or local authorities. Phueakam had arrived to spearhead an increased campaign for tourist safety. Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat has since assured Royal Thai Police and other officials that significant steps are being taken to enhance tourist safety. In the wake of the tragic accident, Cey-lan’s family reached out to European news agency RTL to share their ordeal. Cey-lan was visiting her grandmother in Phuket with her parents when the accident occurred. Her aunt, Zara-ly Pizzuto, provided details of the night it happened. Chalong’s ex-mayor resists pressure to close popular Suksamran Market Photo courtesy of Phuket News Former Chalong Mayor Samran Jindapol is standing his ground against formal charges, refusing to shut down the popular Suksamran Market on Chao Fa East Road, despite pressure from Chalong Municipality. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1312506-chalong’s-ex-mayor-resists-pressure-to-close-popular-suksamran-market/ -
Former Chalong Mayor Samran Jindapol is standing his ground against formal charges, refusing to shut down the popular Suksamran Market on Chao Fa East Road, despite pressure from Chalong Municipality. The market, which has been functioning without disruption for nearly ten years, is still bustling with residents and vendors, who continue to back Samran staunchly. The ex-mayor, fondly known by locals as Nayok Samran or Prime Minister Samran, faced the charges at Chalong Police Station last week. He stands accused of operating a public market without the necessary authorisation and of disregarding an official directive. Following these developments, he organised a press conference at the market yesterday (November 23), urging Chalong Municipality to clarify the charges against him. Samran contends that the market has always been operated within the bounds of the law, and yet, it has not been granted the requisite official permission to open. The market, set up on his land at an expense of 400,000 baht, was initially an initiative to provide locals with an avenue for selling fresh produce and making a living. Over the years, Suksamran Market has won over both locals and vendors, becoming a popular spot in the community. This popularity was evident when Samran presented himself at the police station on November 17, and numerous vendors turned up in a show of support. The same support was extended at the press conference, with Samran receiving large garlands and roses from the community. A recent online post featuring an image of a traditional Thai snack known as Pa Tong Go sparked interest and discussion. Many people are familiar with this snack, typically golden yellow in colour and standard in shape, which is often served in pairs. Some variations may involve moulding the dough into different shapes. However, a recent post that has been widely shared requests help from online users to rename a new menu item. The original name was Charcoal Pa Tong Go, which was not selling well. The image accompanying the post shows a snack resembling pa tong go but differs in being dark in colour. The combination of these elements led many to think beyond the usual. Amid the comments, there was a common sentiment that certain snacks might not suit charcoal dough. It was also suggested that changing the shape of the snack could be a way to improve its appeal, reported KhaoSod. In a diplomatic spectacle, the Russian Navy‘s Pacific Ocean Fleet, Admiral Panteleyev, has made waves with its visit to Thailand‘s Sattahip, marking a significant diplomatic event—the first since 2019. The vessel was welcomed with the Soviet classic Katyusha performed by an orchestra, setting the stage for a diplomatic dance between nations. A Royal Thai Navy official rolled out the red carpet for the Russian ship. “We believe that it is necessary to maintain normal friendly relations with all countries, and Russia is no exception here.” As the Russian destroyer graces Thai waters, talks emerge of a reciprocal visit by a Royal Thai Navy ship to Vladivostok. This hints at a shared interest in fostering robust ties between the two nations, underlining the significance of this diplomatic overture. The last Russian visit to Sattahip was in October 2019, making the current presence of Admiral Panteleyev a noteworthy diplomatic gesture amid heightened geopolitical tensions. Simultaneously, the United States Navy deployed a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to South Korea in response to North Korean provocations. South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik announces joint maritime drills with the US and Japan, featuring the participation of the USS Carl Vinson. Rear Admiral Carlos Sardiello emphasizes the US commitment to its ally’s security, showcasing military preparedness against North Korean threats. The Constitutional Court has set a date for 2 important hearings. The first is set for December 20th, addressing allegations against Pita Limjaroenrat for holding shares in a media company during election candidacy. The second, scheduled for December 25th, will delve into a controversial proposal to amend a key law related to royal defamation. The 1st hearing stems from Pita’s shareholder status in iTV Public Company Limited, a now-defunct media firm, at the time of his election candidacy. Following a petition by the Election Commission, the Court has suspended Pita from his parliamentary duties starting July 19th, pending a final decision. Pita submitted a defense statement, along with a list of witnesses and evidence, on October 2nd and an additional witness list on October 18th. The Court, after deliberation, has decided to proceed with witness hearings on December 20th at 9:30 AM. The other case involves Teerayuth Suwannakesorn urging the Constitutional Court to evaluate the actions of Pita, the then-leader of the Move Forward Party, and the party itself. This case scrutinizes their continuous campaign to amend the Criminal Code of Article 112, which deals with royal defamation. The Court, acknowledging the need for further examination, has scheduled a witness hearing for this case on December 25th at 9:30 AM.
