The mysteries surrounding the detention of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has also caused many to doubt whether Praween Chanklai, “aka “Kamnan Nok”, a prime suspect in the murder of a police officer, is really being detained in Bangkok Remand Prison. Scores of comments on social media are demanding that the Corrections Department provide solid proof that Praween is really in the prison. Others claim that the man presently in detention is a Praween doppelganger. Move Forward party warned by Pheu Thai MPs not to “play games” Pheu Thai MP Khrumanit Sungpoom has warned the Move Forward party about widespread speculation that it plans to engage in political game play by expelling Deputy House Speaker Padipat Suntiphada from the party, so that it can claim the vacant leader of the opposition post and keep Padipat as Deputy House Speaker, but under the banner of another party. Pheu Thai MP Khrumanit Sungpoom has warned the Move Forward party about widespread speculation that it plans to engage in political game play by expelling Deputy House Speaker Padipat Suntiphada from the party, so that it can claim the vacant leader of the opposition post and keep Padipat as Deputy House Speaker, but under the banner of another party. The MP for the north-eastern province of Surin asked both the Move Forward party and Padipat to think twice about such a move, pointing out that such an expulsion would put Padipat in a difficult position when performing his duties as Deputy House Speaker. Being expelled from a party is a serious matter, equivalent to political suicide, because it would hurt the dignity of the Deputy House Speaker’s post, said Khrumanit, as he reminded Padipat that he is among the MPs who voted to approve the latter’s selection as deputy House speaker. No parole for Thaksin… yet Convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is not yet entitled to parole, according to Corrections Department spokesman Sitthi Sutheewong today (Monday). Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1306947-no-parole-for-thaksin…-yet/ -
Convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is not yet entitled to parole, according to Corrections Department spokesman Sitthi Sutheewong today (Monday). He dismissed as untrue reports that Thaksin, whose prison term was reduced from eight to one year by a royal commutation, will submit an application for parole, citing his age and serious illness. While Thaksin may fit the profile of those who can apply for parole, he must remain incarcerated for at least one-third of his jail term or at least six months (whichever is the longer), as required by the rules. Thaksin is currently only in the first month of his jail time, Suthee said. “One third of his one-year prison time is four months, but the rules state that the time served has to be at least six months. So, Thaksin has to serve five more months before being entitled to apply for parole.” If granted parole, Thaksin is expected to be a free man again next February, Suthee said. A heated dispute over Bitcoin investment loss led to a domestic violence incident that escalated into a six-hour standoff with the police. The 35 year old husband, Kritsada, shot his wife and barricaded himself in their home in Uthai district, Ayutthaya province, before eventually surrendering to the authorities. The agitated husband yesterday shot his wife with a handgun, causing her injury. He then took refuge within their home. The police from Uthai station, Ayutthaya province, surrounded the residence for over six hours. They engaged in negotiation efforts with Kritsada, even involving a family member in the dialogue. The situation culminated in his surrender late at night. The next day, the police continued their close monitoring of Kritsada, who was under stress and in pain after shooting himself in the leg. Officer Manas Atthadod from Uthai Police Station, Ayutthaya province, revealed that Kritsada attempted to kill his 31 year old wife, Pitsamai, after which he stayed in the house for more than six hours. A police official further explained that they had to take precautions as the suspect was alone in the house, and they feared potential harm. Hence, they opted for negotiation and asked the suspect to destress and surrender himself. They even called his sister to talk to him, which eventually led to his surrender. A kindhearted Thai woman shared a video on TikTok of the moment she helped a struggling taxi driver. She paid the driver an extra 2,350 baht to replace his broken meter. The video was posted on the TikTok account, @worldmj on Tuesday, September 12. The video caption read… “Travelling for several kilometres, but the meter does not count it. What Should I do?” In the video, the woman asked the taxi driver why the meter stopped at 49 baht when she had already reached her destination. The driver explained that the meter was broken. He could not afford to buy a new one, but he could not stop working either, even if it meant earning less. The woman then asked the driver how much the new meter would cost. The driver replied that it would cost him 2,350 baht. Thai economy faces scrutiny amid recession fears and slow pandemic recovery Photo taken from the Bangkok Post The Thai economy is in the spotlight as concerns over a looming recession persist due to the nation’s weak export outlook and slow recovery from the pandemic. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1306939-thai-economy-faces-scrutiny-amid-recession-fears-and-slow-pandemic-recovery/ -
The Thai economy is in the spotlight as concerns over a looming recession persist due to the nation’s weak export outlook and slow recovery from the pandemic. Last week, the government faced heavy criticism from opposition parties and business leaders during a Thai economy policy debate, with the latter expressing concerns over the lack of detail in the 43-page policy statement on economic recovery plans. The government’s stimulus projects like the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, which requires an estimated 560 billion baht budget, have raised questions about the sourcing of funds. Despite this, independent political and economic analyst, Somjai Phagaphasvivat, argued that there are no signs of a recession in the Thai economy. “The chance of a recession is very low unless there is an economic crisis, such as a rapid surge in energy prices.” Somjai also highlighted the government’s economic stimulus measures, including the digital currency handout scheme, which is projected to add 1% to GDP growth next year. The National Economic and Social Development Council previously reduced its economic growth forecast for 2023 to 2.5-3% due to the global economic slowdown. With the number of dengue cases in Thailand this year projected to break records, health experts say a whole-of-society approach is what’s needed to help control the surge. Piecemeal strategies such as fogging or mosquitoes with Wolbachia are not enough to stem an outbreak. Already this year, there have been 59 deaths due to dengue logged since January 1 to September 9, compared with 56 deaths for the whole of last year. During the same period, there were 82,485 cases, compared with the 66,102 cases in 2022. In some areas the number of cases has increase three-fold, along with the death rate.
