A heated dispute over Bitcoin investment loss led to a domestic violence incident that escalated into a six-hour standoff with the police. The 35 year old husband, Kritsada, shot his wife and barricaded himself in their home in Uthai district, Ayutthaya province, before eventually surrendering to the authorities. The agitated husband yesterday shot his wife with a handgun, causing her injury. He then took refuge within their home. The police from Uthai station, Ayutthaya province, surrounded the residence for over six hours. They engaged in negotiation efforts with Kritsada, even involving a family member in the dialogue. The situation culminated in his surrender late at night. The next day, the police continued their close monitoring of Kritsada, who was under stress and in pain after shooting himself in the leg. Officer Manas Atthadod from Uthai Police Station, Ayutthaya province, revealed that Kritsada attempted to kill his 31 year old wife, Pitsamai, after which he stayed in the house for more than six hours. A police official further explained that they had to take precautions as the suspect was alone in the house, and they feared potential harm. Hence, they opted for negotiation and asked the suspect to destress and surrender himself. They even called his sister to talk to him, which eventually led to his surrender. A kindhearted Thai woman shared a video on TikTok of the moment she helped a struggling taxi driver. She paid the driver an extra 2,350 baht to replace his broken meter. The video was posted on the TikTok account, @worldmj on Tuesday, September 12. The video caption read… “Travelling for several kilometres, but the meter does not count it. What Should I do?” In the video, the woman asked the taxi driver why the meter stopped at 49 baht when she had already reached her destination. The driver explained that the meter was broken. He could not afford to buy a new one, but he could not stop working either, even if it meant earning less. The woman then asked the driver how much the new meter would cost. The driver replied that it would cost him 2,350 baht. The Thai economy is in the spotlight as concerns over a looming recession persist due to the nation’s weak export outlook and slow recovery from the pandemic. Last week, the government faced heavy criticism from opposition parties and business leaders during a Thai economy policy debate, with the latter expressing concerns over the lack of detail in the 43-page policy statement on economic recovery plans. The government’s stimulus projects like the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, which requires an estimated 560 billion baht budget, have raised questions about the sourcing of funds. Despite this, independent political and economic analyst, Somjai Phagaphasvivat, argued that there are no signs of a recession in the Thai economy. “The chance of a recession is very low unless there is an economic crisis, such as a rapid surge in energy prices.” Somjai also highlighted the government’s economic stimulus measures, including the digital currency handout scheme, which is projected to add 1% to GDP growth next year. The National Economic and Social Development Council previously reduced its economic growth forecast for 2023 to 2.5-3% due to the global economic slowdown. With the number of dengue cases in Thailand this year projected to break records, health experts say a whole-of-society approach is what’s needed to help control the surge. Piecemeal strategies such as fogging or mosquitoes with Wolbachia are not enough to stem an outbreak. Already this year, there have been 59 deaths due to dengue logged since January 1 to September 9, compared with 56 deaths for the whole of last year. During the same period, there were 82,485 cases, compared with the 66,102 cases in 2022. In some areas the number of cases has increase three-fold, along with the death rate. Additionally, rankings can be considered a bad working environment. This is a sustainable solution to police reformation,” said Pol. Col. Wirut. Thailand and Laos Hold Talks on Boosting Tourism Cooperation BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand and Laos have initiated discussions aimed at enhancing tourism collaboration, as they explore measures to attract more visitors to the region. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand and Laos have initiated discussions aimed at enhancing tourism collaboration, as they explore measures to attract more visitors to the region. In a meeting held in Loei, Thailand, officials from both countries convened to discuss tourism route connectivity and expediting the construction of a second Thai-Lao friendship bridge in Pak Chom district. During the 20th Thai-Lao border security meeting, various topics were addressed, including tourism promotion, cultural exchanges and economic, social and security cooperation. As part of these efforts, Thailand recently approved a free-visa policy for Chinese tourists, prompting Laos to consider the development of its Muen border town in Vientiane to cater to the growing influx of Chinese visitors traveling to Thailand, with the possibility of extending their journeys into Laos. The proximity of Muen town to Pak Chom district in Laos positions it as a potential gateway for linking popular attractions in both Loei and Vientiane. Plans are in motion to upgrade Laos’ temporary checkpoint to a permanent one, allowing for smoother border crossings and improved accessibility. Loei also has ambitious plans to construct a second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in Pak Chom district. This infrastructure project is expected to have far-reaching benefits, including boosting tourism, trade, investment and logistical efficiency. The first Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in Loei already connects Tha Li district in Loei to Kenethao City in Laos. National Social and Economic Council (NESDC) is unsure that the digital wallet scheme will boost domestic consumption to the level desired by the government, as the current consumption rate remains high. According to the NESDC’s second quarter report this year, private sector consumption has increased by up to 7.8% for the first half of this year, fuelling doubts as to by how much more consumption would increase as a result of spending through the digital wallet, although the scheme will help boost the economy and GDP to a certain extent. According to the report, the total value of exports has dropped over three consecutive quarters by 5.5%, but are expected to pick up slightly in the 3rd and 4th quarters.
