  2. The area around Pling Island and the surrounding coral reefs of Sirinart National Park in Phuket are closed temporarily due to extreme coral bleaching. This is a result of rising sea water temperatures. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation confirms that the closure starts immediately. The head of Sirinart National Park, Watchara Songsee-on, stated that this closure will lower the level of human maritime activities. These activities can accelerate the process of coral bleaching. Instances of coral bleaching have also been reported in other locations within the Andaman Sea as well as the Gulf. A group of Thai PBS reporters who dived in Khai Bay and off Jarn Island, located in Sattahip district of Chon Buri on May 5, found that corals situated at depths of 6-8 meters are bleached. This area is a popular place for diving. Thorn Thamrongnawasawat, an Associate Professor and marine expert at Kasetsart University, has previously explained that the main reason behind coral bleaching, leading ultimately to death, is an increase in sea water temperatures above 31 degrees Celsius for three to four weeks consecutively. The bleaching of corals also occurs as a result of losing symbiotic algae, photosynthetic pigments and due to different stress aspects such as variations in water temperature. Before this water distribution, the residents of Koh Larn reported extreme water shortage. They were unhappy about the significant increase in water prices, which went up almost four times, from 300 baht to over 1,200 baht, during the time of high demand. 14. A 52-year-old man from Thailand allegedly ran a red light, crashing his sedan into a motorcycle in South Pattaya in the early hours of May 8th. This accident resulted in heavy injuries for the motorcyclist. Just before 3:00 AM, the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation was alerted about a traffic collision on Sukhumvit Road in South Pattaya. A bronze-gray Mitsubishi Pajero and a gray Honda CBR 1000cc motorcycle were involved in the collision. Emergency responders arrived on the scene to find a heavily damaged Mitsubishi Pajero with one of its wheels detached. They discovered three passengers in the car: two boys, ages 10 and 14, with head injuries, and an 8-year-old girl with various cuts and a glass wound on her wrist. The driver, Mr. Sathit Sinuansakulnee, was found to be uninjured. Near the wrecked car, responders discovered a badly damaged gray Honda CBR 1000cc motorcycle. The driver, Mr. Wiran Suksaow, 23, was found unconscious in the middle of the road. He had sustained major injuries and was bleeding heavily. He was immediately transported to the closest hospital. An eyewitness, 29-year-old Mr. Mongkol Khamprasong, claimed that the Pajero had been waiting at a red light next to him when the driver blatantly ignored the signal and turned onto Sukhumvit Road, directly into the path of the motorcycle. Mr. Mongkol said the motorcyclist had tried to avoid the collision but failed to do so in time. Mr. Sathit, the Pajero's driver, did not give any statement to the press at the crash site. The Pattaya police are now checking CCTV footage from the surrounding area to validate Mr. Mongkol's account of the accident and identify any potential charges. 15. Severe Drought Crisis Affects Northeast Thailand Photo courtesy of Thai News Agency Northeast Thailand is going through a severe drought, with major dams holding less than half of their capacity. The situation is particularly dire in the Nakhon Ratchasima Province, where intense heat and a predicted lack of rainfall are affecting farming and daily water use. 16. Northeast Thailand is going through a severe drought, with major dams holding less than half of their capacity. The situation is particularly dire in the Nakhon Ratchasima Province, where intense heat and a predicted lack of rainfall are affecting farming and daily water use. Farmers in the Kham Thale So District of Nakhon Ratchasima are continuing to grow rice despite the water shortage. Using water pumps from the Lam Takhong Dam’s canal, they are able to keep their crops alive. They are hoping for rain in the next couple of months, but recognize the chance of losing their crops if the rain doesn't come. Although the Nakhon Ratchasima Irrigation Project advised against growing rice due to the Lam Takhong Dam’s water level dropping to just 32%, farmers continue due to existing water reserves. As a result, the project has had to stop distributing water for farming purposes to ensure enough water for household needs. Eighty communities that depend on water from the Lam Takhong Dam for household use are feeling the pinch as water levels continue to drop. For example, in the Pong Daeng Sub-district of Kham Thale So District, the water supply for two villages is only enough for a month's use. This situation is made worse by locals excessively pumping water for rice farming, further reducing water availability. In all of Nakhon Ratchasima’s 27 reservoirs, there is only 474 million cubic meters of water remaining, just 39% of the total 1.216 billion cubic meter capacity. Consequently, water management now focuses on saving water for household use. The Provincial Governor has asked all 32 districts to find alternative water sources for communities, such as natural water sources and wells. Rain is forecasted for mid-May, although it may be less than average. The public is advised to save water. A survey of the five major dams in the area, including Ubol Ratana, Lam Phao, Sirindhorn, Nam Un, and Lam Takhong, shows they are all below 50% capacity. This is a cause for concern among locals, especially farmers who need water for their crops. Even so, it is hoped the rainy season will refill the dams to ensure enough water for the future. 18. On Tuesday, May 7th, Industry Minister Pimphattra Wichaikul confirmed that eight containers of cadmium waste have been moved from Samut Sakhon to Tak province. The move is part of an ongoing environment cleanup effort. On Monday, eight trucks successfully transported the waste, which marks a step forward in the cleanup. Pimphattra acknowledged the logistics issues in maintaining the transport schedule. She believes having more trucks would help meet cleanup deadlines. She also spoke about concerns over industrial safety, including the frequent fires at factories, which she partly blamed on the current extreme heat. In response to these safety concerns, the National Environmental Board has instructed each province and relevant authority to examine factory areas that are at a high risk. They have 20 days to provide their findings to both the board and the Ministry of Industry. The Department of Factories conducts the inspections. There have been rumors in the House of Representatives that some of the factory fires could have been intentionally started to avoid new regulations. However, Pimphattra believes these incidents are more likely due to security problems than intended arson. She has called for increased monitoring and intervention from the security sector, including the police and the Department of Special Investigation, to effectively handle these issues. 20. The Department of Disease Control (DDC) in Bangkok recently reported an increase in COVID-19 cases following the Songkran holiday. They believe the number of infections could continue to rise as schools start their new term. Between April 28 and May 4, the data showed that 1,792 people were admitted to hospitals with COVID-19, meaning there were about 256 cases each day. During this period, 12 people died from the virus. Since the start of the year, there have been 13,057 infections and 93 deaths. Dr. Taweechai Wisanuyothin, the Director of the Region 9 Disease Control Office based in Nakhon Ratchasima, said that even though many people with COVID-19 only show mild symptoms right now, it is still very dangerous for certain groups of people. These at-risk individuals include those over 60 years old, people with certain health conditions, and pregnant women in their third trimester. These groups are referred to as the "608 group". Dr. Taweechai urged people to continue taking precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, especially since schools are reopening. These include washing hands often, steering clear of crowded areas, and wearing masks in places with many people. He noted that the recent increase in cases, mostly caused by the Omicron variant, is partly because people mistake COVID-19 symptoms for a regular flu. He suggested that anyone showing flu-like symptoms should get a COVID-19 test to stop the virus from spreading further. File photo for reference only. 22. A 32-year-old woman's body was found in the Bang Chalong canal, near Wat Bang Chalong Nok, in Samut Prakan province, after she had gone missing for four days. The woman had reportedly argued with her boyfriend about her drinking habit before her disappearance. The Bang Phli Police Station was informed about the body in the canal, leading to a coordinated response from forensic experts, an emergency doctor from Bang Phli Hospital, and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. When the authorities reached the scene near the watergate of Wat Bang Chalong Nok, they found the body of the woman, identified as Munrita Paphan, on the canal’s edge. Early evaluation suggested that Munrita had been dead for at least three days as her body was decomposed. Photographs were taken as part of the investigation process. Munrita’s boyfriend, 39-year-old Piyawat, came shortly after to identify her. He recognized her through her distinctive nail polish and tattoos. Piyawat recounted that Munrita went missing about four days ago. A local fisherman said that Munrita was last seen with his child and she had taken her clothes with her before disappearing. Munrita mentioned wanting to go into the water despite not being able to swim and Piyawat had been searching for her since she went missing. According to Piyawat, Munrita possibly jumped into the water intentionally, because she told a fisherman that if she did not come back, it meant she was gone. The couple had recently argued about her drinking. Piyawat was then called in for further questioning by the police about the events leading to the incident. Munrita’s body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital Chakri Naruebodin for a post-mortem to establish the exact cause of death. Once the investigation concludes, her relatives can claim her body for funeral rites. Photo courtesy of The Thaiger -- 2024-05-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
