  5. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has set its 2023 rice export target to 7.5 million tons in alignment with strong demands and the volatility of the Baht currency. Foreign Trade Department Director-General Ronnarong Phoolpipat stated that the rice export target for this year was made following consultation with the Thai Rice Exporters Association. Although demand for Thai rice remains strong this year, the instability of the Thai currency could make Thai rice more expensive than its competitors. This prompts the ministry to set this year’s target at 7.5 million tons, which is lowered than the 7.69 million tons exported last year. The director-general added that the Commerce Ministry will continue to promote Thai rice through events and forums, as well as make trade visits with major partners such as China, Vietnam, Australia, and Germany. According to reports from the department, the 2023 target of 7.5 million tons represents a 22% increase from 6.3 million tons of Thai rice exported in 2021. The largest Thai rice importer last year was Iraq with 1.6 million tons, followed by South Africa (775,000), China (750,000), the United States (650,000), and Benin (321,000), respectively. 7. BANGKOK (NNT) - A labor cooperation deal signed between Thailand and South Korea is offering opportunities for skilled Thai workers to work in South Korea for well-paid positions. Under the cooperation deal reached last year, the Department of Employment will secure 5,000 skilled Thai workers for the Korea Offshore and Shipbuilding Association (Koshipa) just for 2023 alone. The department reported that recruitment companies contracted to this labor cooperation have recruited 1,275 skilled workers, including 970 welders, 205 spray painters, and 100 electrical mechanics. According to DoE Director-General Pairoj Chotikasatien, the first group of 65 welders has already traveled to South Korea, while a second group of 49 workers has just followed recently. These workers will be working at Hyundai Heavy Industries. These skilled workers are guaranteed a fair salary and fringe benefits, with pay starting at 2,430 baht per day, plus overtime and a two-month bonus every year. They will be working eight hours per day for five days a week. Welders and electrical mechanics are in high demand in South Korea as the South Korean shipyard is a key player in the global shipbuilding industry. The DoE is now inviting skilled workers who are looking for opportunities or well-paying jobs to explore this possibility. Interested workers can visit the department’s website at www.doe.go.th. for more employment information. BANGKOK (NNT) - According to the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International, Thailand’s corruption standing improved by 9 places to 101st out of 180 countries, compared to 110th in 2021. National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) Secretary-General Niwatchai Kasemmongkol said Thailand scored 36 points, an increase from 35 points in the previous year. Denmark topped the list as the world’s best performer with a score of 90 points, followed by Finland and New Zealand with 87 points each. 19. Members of the Lila Pilipina lay flowers at the pedestal of a statue depicting a Filipino ‘comfort woman’ to mark the 30th anniversary of the ‘Flowers for Lolas’ campaign in Baclaran, Parañaque yesterday. The statue, shown in a tarpaulin beside the pedestal, remains missing after it was stolen from artist Jonas Roces’ studio in 2019. The statue was installed along the Baywalk in Manila in 2017 but was removed months later for a drainage improvement project. Krizjohn Rosales MANILA, Philippines — Compensation for "comfort women" — who were forced into sexual slavery during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines – is not among discussion points that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will bring up during his official working visit to Japan. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, the issues had already been settled upon the signing of the 1956 Reparations Agreement with Japan, when it provided the Philippines around $550 million worth of goods and services. "We will not stop the victims (from demanding that) — because this is an atrocious violence against women during the war — but, as far as government is concerned, we’ve already signed that reparations agreement with Japan in 1956," Nathaniel Imperial, assistant secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs at the DFA, said in a media briefing on Wednesday.
