The Election Commission is under increasing pressure to review how it is redrawing the electoral boundaries for the next general elections which currently takes into account people without Thai citizenship in calculating representation for each of the constituencies. The commission insisted that this is not the first time it includes non-Thais in their calculation. However, opposition MPs and academics argue that such practice could lead to the elections being declared null and void. There has been suggestion that either the Election Commission or the Interior Ministry seek a ruling on the controversy from the Constitutional Court. The Land Transport Department (LTD) signed an agreement with the Royal Thai Police today (Wednesday), under which LTD officials will collect traffic ticket fines on behalf of the police when motorists and motorcyclists show up for annual car tax renewals. Under this landmark agreement, the two state agencies will link their electronic information systems, particularly the information about traffic violations and traffic tickets issued by the police to traffic law offenders caught by surveillance cameras or by traffic police officers. Police have been trying for many years to get the LTD to help in the collection of traffic ticket fines, as many of people have refused to pay and the police are powerless to deal with the problem. The STAR / Edd Gumban, file MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines will be halting the deployment to Kuwait of newly-hired domestic workers "until more safeguards are in place for their protection and welfare." This comes after much pressure from lawmakers to implement a deployment ban following the death of overseas Filipino worker Jullebee Ranara and reports of another Filipino domestic worker being abused by their employer just a couple of weeks into 2023. In the meantime, Migrant Workers Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople said Filipinos looking to work abroad can consider other countries. STAR / KJ Rosales MANILA, Philippines — Four months since the brazen killing of radio broadcaster Percy Lapid, state prosecutors wrapped up their preliminary investigation into the murder complaints filed against suspended Corrections chief Gerald Bantag — tagged as brains behind the slay — as he filed his counter-affidavit where he denied allegations against him. Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Charlie Guhit told reporters on Wednesday that the case is now submitted for resolution. “Respondent Bantag submitted his counter-affidavit ex abundanti ad cautelam (out of an abundance of caution) while other respondents [Persons Deprived of Liberty] submitted the cases for resolution without their respective counter-affidavits,” he said in a statement. This July 22, 2019 photo shows Rep. Eddie Villanueva and Sen. Joel Villanueva. Joel Villanueva Facebook page MANILA, Philippines — The father-and-son duo of preacher Rep. Eddie Villanueva (CIBAC party-list) and Senate Majority Joel Villanueva on Wednesday deployed parallel parliamentary tactics to delay proposals that seek to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE). With the backing of 18 senators who were convinced through a barrage of letters from evangelical groups that they were not given enough time to air their views on the measure, Villanueva moved to have the SOGIE bill sent to the powerful rules committee, which he chairs. This would mean that the measure, which was supposed to be sent to the Senate floor, would go back to the committee level. The rules committee controls where proposals are referred and sets the agenda for Senate session.
