The over 30 million Baht project was developed by Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM) and Bangkok Metro Networks Limited (BMN) and is supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) as a new location for tourists and Thais to visit, particularly those who appreciate art and creativity. BANGKOK (NNT) - An Australian national has handed over nine wooden Buddha statues to Thai officials, marking the return of additional Thai artifacts to the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has organized a handover ceremony for the nine wooden Buddha statues to the Fine Arts Department. Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Nathapol Khantahiran and Deputy Director-General of the Fine Arts Department Sathaporn Thiangtham were representatives from both sides in this handover event. The statues were donated by Murray Upton, who informed the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra that he had inherited them from his father, who had them in possession since 1911. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since expressed gratitude to the Australian national for his decision to return the artifacts to the country and commended all sides for their efforts in repatriating Thai antiquities. The Fine Arts Department said it will work to identify and examine the statues, noting that the artifacts will be preserved at the National Museum Storage in Pathum Thani province. The Bhumjaithai Party’s registrar has warned the Move Forward Party and its leader, Pita Limjaroenrat, that they may be accused of defying the Constitution, if it interferes with the transfer of Public Health Ministry officials. Yesterday (Thursday), Move Forward issued a written statement, signed by Pita, opposing the Ministry’s transfer of Dr. Supat Hasuwannakit, director of Chana District Hospital and head of Rural Doctors’ Society, to the post of director of Saba Yoi District Hospital, also in Songkhla Province, claiming that the move was politically motivated. The registrar, Suphachai Jaismut, explained that transfers of officials within a ministry is a common occurrence in the state sector and the transfer of an efficient official for the benefit of the people is quite normal. (Photo by Lillian SUWANRUMPHA / AFP) Palang Pracharath Party Leader Prawit Wongsuwan was formally nominated as the party’s sole candidate for next prime minister at its general meeting on Friday. Wirat Rattanaseth, a deputy party leader, told the media that party members were unanimous in their choice of General Prawit, who is also a deputy prime minister, as the sole candidate for Thailand’s 30th premiership. They claim to be confident that Prawit will be the next prime minister, following the party’s last candidate, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who is the current prime minister. He urged all party members to join the party’s fund-raising meeting, scheduled for January 30th, during which, he said, the party will announce its priority policy to push for a monthly subsidy of 700 baht for state welfare card holders. Thailand’s peace process – All form, no substance It may be that the Thai negotiators sitting across the table from the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) see them as easy pickings, but this low-hanging fruit – the Cessation of Hostility Agreement (COHA) — should be a cause of concern for the Malays of Patani, as it could legitimise more cheap ploys by the government, looking to make a quick score without thinking about long term investments in a meaningful and sustainable peace. It may be that the Thai negotiators sitting across the table from the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) see them as easy pickings, but this low-hanging fruit – the Cessation of Hostility Agreement (COHA) — should be a cause of concern for the Malays of Patani, as it could legitimise more cheap ploys by the government, looking to make a quick score without thinking about long term investments in a meaningful and sustainable peace. Even at the risk of sounding like cheap political rhetoric, all sides approached reduction of violence, or more to the point, a ceasefire, as something noble and good for the public. For Patani’s conflict resolution, however, one needs to understand that nothing comes easily. “Civilian protection is the responsibility of all sides, the government and the rebels. People here should not have to wait for a ceasefire to feel safe.” said Rukchart Suwan, former president of Buddhists for Peace (B4P) and currently an advisor to the group. B4P’s help ensured that the Buddhist views in the region are not overlooked in the peace negotiations between the Thai Government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN). Ang Thong National Park, Thailand The first Taiwanese tour group has returned to Koh Samui after a near 3-year hiatus as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Phuket Express reports that 142 Taiwanese visitors arrived on the island according to the Samui Tourism Association. Their trip will take them to Ang Thong national park, Koh Tao, and Nang Yuan over the course of 4 days and 3 nights, taking in the natural resources and temples and shrines of Surat Thani province. Traditionally, Taiwanese and Chinese visitors have a shorter stay during their trips in Thailand but rank high in their per diem spending. With tourism on the increase, from next month, Chinese and Russian airlines will begin flights to Surat Thani International Airport, meaning more visitors to the region’s islands. Since the start of the year, the airport has welcomed 86,507 passengers, while another 91,570 visitors have arrived by ferry. Bangkok Airways continues to maintain a monopoly on flights into the Koh Samui airport, with high prices for flights from Bangkok or Phuket into the privately owned Samui airport.
