Parents check the sections of their children on the lists posted at the Talon Elementary School in Las Piñas City. Russell Palma MANILA, Philippines — Lawmakers pushing to ban the "no permit, no exam" policy in basic education agreed on Tuesday to look into small private schools on the brink of closure due to millions in unsettled payments from students. The House committee on basic education and culture agreed to take into consideration small private schools that rely on the timely payment of tuition fees to fund their operational expenses during the school year. This was after a representative from the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations of the Philippines (COCOPEA) expressed their reservations with the bill, citing several private schools, including one in Bulacan, that have allegedly recorded millions in unpaid fees. Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople speaks to reporters at the Senate on January 24, 2023. Philstar.com / Xave Gregorio MANILA, Philippines — Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople floated on Tuesday a possible review of the Philippines’ labor agreement with Kuwait to better secure overseas Filipino workers there following the brutal killing of yet another Filipino domestic worker. "We will reach out to the Kuwaiti government. Maybe it’s time to review the 2018 bilateral labor agreement so that it would be similar to the bilateral agreement with Saudi Arabia which has more safeguards for our workers," Ople told reporters in a chance interview at the Senate. The Philippines and Kuwait inked an agreement in 2018 guaranteeing certain rights of workers, including their right to keep their passports and mobile phones which are typically confiscated by employers in Gulf states. BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok’s Pink Line monorail is expected to be up and running this year, with the project’s construction nearing completion at 95%. The 53.5-billion-baht public transit project, which has been in development since 2016, will link Khae Rai in Nonthaburi with Min Buri in east Bangkok, with the aim of relieving chronic traffic congestion in northern Bangkok. The 34.5-kilometer-long monorail line will have 30 stops along the way, starting at Nonthaburi Civic Center Station and linking to the MRT Purple Line, then ending at Min Buri Station, which will connect to the Orange Line currently under construction. At Min Buri station, passengers will be able to transfer to the Impact Link branch line, which is expected to open in 2025. The branch line will have three stations and will ultimately be connected to the SRT’s Red Line services, the BTS Green Line, and the MRT Grey and Brown lines. Construction of the branch line is about 10.5% complete, with 13.45% of the civil construction work already done and 4.5% of the train signaling systems installed. The government hopes that the new rail lines will serve as an inexpensive, convenient and eco-friendly alternative for the city’s commuters, as well as help relieve traffic congestion. BANGKOK (NNT) - In an effort to combat rising cybercrime cases, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) plans to upgrade the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) into a bureau and increase its manpower by 2,000 over the next two years. DES Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn announced on Monday (23 Jan) that the ministry is currently in the process of transferring police officers from the Royal Thai Police to the TCSD for training. Chaiwut urged members of the public to be wary when sharing personal information with strangers, such as user names or passwords, and to exercise extreme caution before subscribing to unknown applications or websites. The DES minister also urged people not to fall prey to online scammers who may claim to be officials and ask for personal information, or contact them concerning financial transactions. He added that assistance can be sought from the DES’s cyber police force and the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB). Cybercrime refers to any criminal activity that involves the use of the internet, computer systems or other forms of digital technology. Examples of cybercrime include hacking, identity theft, online fraud and the distribution of malware. Cybercriminals may use a variety of techniques to gain access to sensitive information or disrupt the normal functioning of computer systems. These include phishing, social engineering, and malware attacks. Governments and law enforcement agencies around the world have become increasingly concerned about such activities as people and entities increasingly rely on technology. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai and Chinese tourism firms are now collaborating to issue tourism promotion campaigns to attract Chinese travelers to Thailand. This comes after China approved tour agencies’ operation of group tours in 20 nations from February 6 onward. Meanwhile, The Thai Chamber of Commerce in China indicates that the number of Chinese travelers arriving in Thailand could potentially reach 10 million this year. Thai Chamber of Commerce in China Secretary-General Phaichit Viboontanasarn said the Chinese government authorizing tour agents to operate group tour services will greatly benefit Thai tourism. He said the development will result in Chinese tourists returning faster and with greater intensity than earlier expected. He explained Thailand will be able to welcome Chinese travelers disgruntled by Japan and South Korea’s rigorous disease screening requirements for tourists from China. These travelers would add to the group consisting of Chinese tourists who specifically want to come to Thailand for a holiday after 2-3 years of not traveling abroad. Mr. Phaichit said he expects Chinese airlines to become 100% operational by March. Mr. Phaichit said Thai and Chinese group tour agencies are discussing holding a tourism fair by mid-February. The event will also host discussions between high-level tourism officials from Thailand and China. Tourism campaigns and tourism promotion plans will be discussed during said encounters. Mr. Phaichit noted there will be many other tourism-related events in Thailand this year. In June, the 16th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention (WCEC) is set to take place in Bangkok. A conference of overseas Chinese pioneers will also take place in Thailand. Some 5,000 participants are expected at the former event. Taken together with dependents and family members, some 20,000 people are expected to come to Thailand for the event. Furthermore, travelers from China are expected to visit Thailand during the Chinese labor day holidays in May. Mr. Phaichit said these factors are expected to enable Thailand to realize a Chinese traveler arrival figure exceeding 8 million persons this year. He said the number could reach 10 million if there are enough flights and tickets are priced at levels seen before the pandemic. He added that around a million Chinese travelers are expected to come to Thailand each month from March onward.
